安い?高い?2025年モロッコの物価。
Hello everyone. This is Asahi. I’m cycling from London to South Africa, and I’m currently in Morocco, my first African country. I’m currently in Laayoune, a fairly large desert town in Western Sahara with a population of 200,000. Today, I’d like to share my impressions of the cost of living in Morocco after traveling there for four months. Let’s get started. This is my room. Single bed, single room. There’s electricity, Wi-Fi, a table, and a chair. This room cost 40 dirhams, or 600 yen (4 dollars). I think it’s sufficient. This is the shower room. The shower head is working properly. This hotel also has excellent hot water. This is the toilet. It’s a typical Moroccan design. After you poop, you pour the water into a bucket and flush it down. There are basically no tissues. Those who are used to it wipe their hands and wash them here. Those who don’t like that can bring their own tissues. It’s common practice in Morocco to throw tissues here instead of flushing them down the toilet. Sorry. I’ve shown you something filthy. Now, let’s go into town. In northern Morocco, tourist cities like Fez and Marrakech, lodging costs 100 dirhams, or 1,500 yen (10 dollars). It’s usually more than double what you’d pay here. Generally, lodging in desert towns is cheaper than in northern Morocco. The mosque you see in front of you is the Great Mosque of Laayoune. The Grand Mosque. It’s a town less than 100 years old, dating back to the Spanish colonial era. And here we are. Everyone’s favorite McDonald’s. Going south of this McDonald’s, the next McDonald’s isn’t until South Africa. Four countries have expanded into Africa: Egypt, Morocco, South Africa, and Mauritius. There’s also a McDonald’s in Western Sahara, the Sahrawi Arab Republic. So, let’s look at the prices. Hello. Why don’t you park your bike over there? It’s better than here. There’s a security guard there. Where are you from? – Laayoune. Your English is good. – Thank you. Is this here? No problem. English, French, or Arabic. 1 Moroccan dirham is 15 yen (0.1 dollars). Hamburger: 15 dirhams, 225 yen (1.5 dollars). Cheeseburger: 18 dirhams, 270 yen (1.8 dollars). Big Mac: 49 dirhams, 735 yen (4.9 dollars). This isn’t a set. It’s a single item. Coke: 17 dirhams, 255 yen (1.7 dollars). Coffee: 14 dirhams, 210 yen (1.4 dollars). Tea: 14 dirhams, 210 yen (1.4 dollars). It’s not super cheap just because it’s Morocco. So, I’ll leave it to you to guess what I ordered. By the way, this is the McDonald’s restroom. It’s incredibly clean. There’s toilet paper, but no one uses it. Everyone throws it in this trash can. I wonder if it’s a cultural thing. Wow, they even have soap. This is high class. It’s a high-class restaurant. The customers there all seem to be well-off. MINURSO, a UN organization working hard to hold a referendum to resolve the Western Sahara issue, is located here. UN staff are stationed here from all over the world. I think that’s a factor. Perhaps they thought there would be demand for McDonald’s. It’s a city with a certain number of wealthy people. I also read online that expensive hotels, like those that cost $100 a night, are likely all booked by UN staff. It seems like people looking for a good hotel should do their research beforehand. So, the food arrived. Coca-Cola Zero, French fries. A Tasty hamburger, probably exclusive to Morocco. It’s a mini version of that, or a Tasty Jr. This set cost 32 dirhams, or 480 yen ($3.20). And, of course, it was a Big Mac. I’ll try it first. Bismillah. It’s smoky, almost like it was charcoal-grilled. Delicious. It’s completely different from a cheeseburger. Morocco is a Muslim country, so pork isn’t eaten. (It’s not mixed.) And Islam has adopted something called halal food. Maybe that’s why? The ingredients are delicious. The meat is also really good. The cheese is whitish. See that difference in color? This cheese is super creamy and delicious. If you come to Morocco, be sure to try Tasty Jr. Okay, I’ll have a Big Mac. Consistently delicious. As you’d expect from a Big Mac. Finish? – Finish. Thank you. Goodbye. This is my last McDonald’s meal. Next up, South Africa. Now, I’m off to do a bit of shopping. The fountain in the middle of this roundabout is lit up. It’s a beautiful city, really. So, let’s go into the supermarket and take a look. Let’s take a look at the prices. Sliced bread. Not very common in Morocco. It was 15 dirhams, 225 yen (1.50 dollars). My favorite avocado yogurt. I definitely recommend trying it when you come to Morocco. 6 dirhams, 90 yen (0.6 dollars). This is also 6 dirhams. They often mix yogurt drink with milk packets. Milk packet: 4-5 dirhams, 60-75 yen (0.4-0.5 dollars). Monster Energy: 22 dirhams, 330 yen (2.3 dollars). Pringles, this is a global brand. 24 dirhams, 360 yen (2.4 dollars). I’ll have this. 11 dirhams, 165 yen (1.1 dollars). This is salad oil. 1 liter for 16 dirhams, 240 yen (1.6 dollars). I wonder about olive oil? 1 liter for 82 dirhams, 1230 yen (8.2 dollars). Isn’t that cheap? I don’t know because bread is the staple food in Morocco, but rice is a bit pricey. 1kg for 18 dirhams, 270 yen (1.8 dollars). Pasta is generally thought of as cheap around the world. 9.5 dirhams, 143 yen ($0.95). Everyone’s favorite Indomie. Five pieces for 15 dirhams, 225 yen ($1.50). But this one’s from some unknown manufacturer. This one comes with five pieces for 8 dirhams, 120 yen ($0.80). Chocolate spread, 26 dirhams, 390 yen ($2.60). 1.5L water, 4-6 dirhams, 60-90 yen ($0.40-$0.60). 5L water, 10-14 dirhams, 150-210 yen ($1-$1.40). 450ml Coca-Cola, 5.5 dirhams, 83 yen ($0.55). Pepsi, 4.5 dirhams, 68 yen ($0.45). All the cashiers are women. As-salamu-alaiqum. Thank you. Here’s what I bought. Instant noodles, milk, avocado yogurt, banana yogurt. Coke, potato chips, chocolate spread. The total came to 63 dirhams, 945 yen (6.3 dollars). There was no alcohol in this huge supermarket. Apparently, Laayoune doesn’t even have a small liquor store tucked away in the middle of town. In bigger cities like Marrakech, there are several such stores where you can buy Moroccan wine and beer. However, in Laayoune, there are no stores where you can buy beer. Speaking from experience buying beer at such a store, one can of beer costs 15 dirhams (225 yen) (1.5 dollars). How much? -1.5 dirhams. Thank you. Here it is 1.5 dirhams (20 yen) (0.15 dollars). I’ll have it for breakfast tomorrow. Next up, vegetables, meat, and next to them is hanout. That’s the kind of place I shop. The prices aren’t written, so please take a guess at how much it will cost. Assalamualaikum. Thank you. Two potatoes. Two onions about this size. One bell pepper, two potatoes, two onions, and 10 mandarin oranges. How much will all this cost? My guess is 15 dirhams. Thank you. 18.5 dirhams (280 yen) (1.85 dollars). Next are eggs. Six eggs. Thank you. Six for 10 dirhams (150 yen) (1 dollar). Cheap. Next, I want olives. Is this how it is? Yes. Thank you. Goodbye. Well, I’ve finished buying everything I wanted. The olives cost 90 yen (0.6 dollars). Six eggs cost 150 yen (1 dollar). That’s cheap, isn’t it? But I don’t think it’s good just because prices are low. I think Morocco is a country where quality is high for the price. Even the olives are incredibly delicious and fresh. Eggs, vegetables, and fruits are honestly better than what you can buy in European supermarkets. So even if the price is the same as in Europe, the food in Morocco tastes better. After this, I bought camel meat and ate it with the locals. I’ll cover that in the next video. That’s the end of this video. Thank you for watching. Please subscribe, like, and comment. See you in the next video. Goodbye.
