Nestled in Okayama’s Chugoku Mountains, Fukiya boomed in the Meiji era when merchants mined loha ore to produce bengara, the iconic “Japan Red” pigment. Over 100 kilns once painted the town in wealth, exporting color for castles and homes. Sekishu tiles—baked from iron-rich clay—crowned lavish mansions with latticed windows and rust-red walls that glow deeper with age. When modern paints arrived in the 1920s, the kilns cooled, but Fukiya’s 100+ Edo-Meiji buildings survived. Designated a national Preservation District in 1977, it’s now a living postcard of merchant ambition.

Wander past the grand Ochiai House, down stone lanes where sunlight dances on bengara facades—this is Japan at its most poetic.

岡山・中国山地の奥、明治期にローハ鉱石から弁柄（ジャパンレッド）を生み出した商人たちが富を築いた吹屋。100を超す窯が城や家を彩り、鉄分豊富な土で焼かれた石州瓦が豪商屋敷を覆う。格子窓と赤い土壁は時を経て深みを増す。1920年代の化学塗料で窯は冷え、だが江戸・明治の100棟以上が残り、1977年全国重要伝統的建造物群保存地区に。豪華な落合邸から石畳の路地へ――陽光が弁柄に踊る、日本詩の極み。
