Hello everyone, I’m Xiaolin . I’m currently in the mountains on the China-Myanmar border. The altitude here is very high, and there’s a Wa ethnic minority town at the top. Let’s go to the town’s farmers’ market. The market is damp everywhere; the mountaintop is shrouded in mist, and the humidity is very high. These uncles and aunties are drinking … What is this? What is this? Auntie: Water wine , water wine. Auntie: Can you drink it? Me: Is it strong? Not strong, not strong. Try a cup, taste it . How about this small cup? I’ll have a small one . Okay , this is… What is this wine made from? Rice and millet . This is rice wine, Wa ethnic minority… (Nationality) Rice wine, slightly sweet, with local sugarcane brown sugar added , low alcohol content, delicious, very refreshing, alcohol content similar to beer. Uncle: This is considered a beverage, a Wa ethnic beverage with a slightly sweet taste . Ethnic beverage is very refreshing, with a strong rice aroma. Another cup, this large cup, 3 yuan a cup, buy a large bottle for 15 yuan. Last cup, supporting the aunt’s business, I’ll finish it in one gulp, hahaha. The wine is very sweet with a unique aroma. It’s my first time drinking this kind of wine. Let’s go inside and take a look . This grandma is lighting a cigarette. Wow , this is so cool, such a long pipe. Let’s put this cigarette in. Look, this is an old-fashioned dry tobacco, just stuff it in. This pipe is very beautiful, with patterns on it, it’s pure silver handmade. In the past, Wa people all smoked, and everyone carried one of these pure silver pipes. Nowadays, young people rarely smoke this kind of tobacco, and this kind of pipe is rarely seen. In the past, the Wa people cultivated tobacco leaves for generations, but now most people have turned to growing coffee, fruit, and rice. The first time I saw such a pipe was with this kind of tobacco leaf, which I grew myself. It looks very rough and a little damp. The smoke doesn’t feel particularly dry . The old man is drinking. Everyone here loves to drink. The old man said he drinks a couple of cups whenever he has free time. It’s eight in the morning. The old men and women here all love to drink. I find it incredible and cool. Everyone drinks! The old man: Hahaha, delicious ! He’s puffing out smoke. The old woman has been smoking since she was a teenager. She smokes every day and has been smoking for more than half a century. Smoking and drinking are Wa traditions. It’s their daily routine, like eating. They don’t think it’s bad. They’re so skilled at it! Hahahaha. Hey, Grandpa said, “Let me find my pipe.” Hahaha, he found a pack of modern cigarettes. I thought you were going to smoke those old cigarettes too ! Hahaha. There’s a lot of baijiu over there. This one is much stronger. The Wa people love to drink. Sometimes they even drink it like water. Hehe. This silver ornament is so beautiful. The silver plate on the aunt’s body has a very complicated pattern, and the ones on her hands are all pure silver . These on her head are also a long string of silver ornaments. This is a very ancient type of Wa silver ornament. Now very few people wear it. I’ve only seen such silver ornaments in museums before. What is this? Tea? Auntie: It’s not tea, it’s old grass tobacco. This grass tobacco looks rather rough and black. There’s also alcohol , hahaha. I just drank some over there. You can see people drinking everywhere, it’s very interesting. Look at this auntie drinking here, she’s had many cups. This green one, oh, this is also alcohol. Auntie, you’ve drunk so much. Grandma, this bottle has a very high alcohol content. This bottle has a very high alcohol content, it’s amazing. Men, women, young and old all love to drink, no matter what age. That green one is different from that one. That green one is different from that one . This is called new wine. This is called baijiu . Yes, that’s baijiu, I know. Green , the bottle is green , and the inside is yellow and transparent. The alcohol content is high. The yellow wine has a low alcohol content. Oh, at this moment, a man came over and he was introducing to me how this wine is made . Good wine, great! The man was already drunk, but he wanted to continue drinking. I’ve already seen two drunk people in the market. Man: I can’t drink that sweet one (meaning he only drinks baijiu, high alcohol content). I just had a small cup, it’s pretty good. This one has a low alcohol content. Yes, yes, they say it’s almost like a beverage. The more you drink this wine, the more you want to drink it, it seems addictive, hahaha. I’ll have this big cup, let’s have a toast! Go , I drank from a small cup to a large cup, but I couldn’t drink anymore, so I downed a whole large cup , hahaha. Okay, that’s refreshing! Look at these three grandmas carrying baskets on their heads, what ethnicity are you? Grandma is a Lahu (LaHu nationality). The Lahu and Wa people are closely related; they share the same origin. This town is mostly Wa, with a small number of Lahu people. There are almost no other ethnic groups. Auntie buying a bag: Look at these bags! This little bag is quite nice. This one is ethnic. Yes, my sister there has more ! Oh, there are more over there! Oh, and those are even better! Look, there’s a drunk man here: This is my eldest sister, and that’s my second sister. The drunk man’s two older sisters’ stall : needles and thread, these goods. This is for sewing clothes. This color is so bright! It has so many patterns sewn on it. This is also hand-sewn. There’s an elephant on it. Is that Burmese or Lao? I can’t understand. This white one is nice . This white one is good. I like this pattern. Oh, this is pretty. There’s a bull’s head here. This is a tiger’s head. Tiger’s head isn’t a bull’s head, tiger’s head, tiger’s head. I don’t know what we call this tiger’s head. There are many beef vendors in this market. There’s fresh beef every day. The Wa people love to eat beef. Big machete . Most of the grandmas and aunties here are Wa. I didn’t see any other ethnic groups . Almost everyone here is Wa. Grandma , what kind of cigarette is this? Grandma: What are these leaves of the “old grass tobacco” ? I was curious what kind of leaves wrapped around the tobacco. Grandma said it was “old grass tobacco,” but she didn’t understand. Later I learned it was betel nut leaves. I’ll go get a bowl of this beef and minced beef rice noodles. How much meat do you calculate? You can buy as much as you want , or you can cook it here. You can also buy meat over there . This needs to be cold-dressed and marinated . I’ll have a bowl of beef rice noodles and rice vermicelli, half and half stir-fried. Freshly stir-fried braised meat with some broth and hot water. Just blanch the rice noodles and rice vermicelli . Hmm, quite unique. Wow, so much meat! Haha, not bad . I can add my own seasonings. I’ll add some chili oil and pepper. This seasoning is very rich. I ‘ll add some cowpeas, pickled beans, and some pickled vegetables. This is a kind of root, what’s it called ? It’s not houttuynia cordata, I forgot what it ‘s called . It’s quite delicious. And then there are some scallions. Then have some of this , try it! This big bowl is full of flavor, only 8 yuan! Mmm, it tastes very good, the beef is very fragrant, the kids are very happy eating it, it’s like noodles . And it’s a long pipe, this grandma’s pipe is even more beautiful. Grandma’s skillful movements, old dry tobacco. This market isn’t crowded, but it’s very lively. Big pumpkin , cucumber , hahaha, eating cucumber , hahaha . This bag of the handsome young man is especially beautiful , hahaha. Eat a whole cucumber , let me get a cucumber , let me have one of these, grandma, let me have one . What is this? Grandma, is it an eggplant? Two packets of chili peppers. This is an eggplant, this green eggplant, that is also an eggplant , it should be a tomato, I’m not sure, anyway, they are all nightshade plants. It’s served cold, served cold. The grandma here is also Wa. Grandma, let me see your silver earring, it’s so big, hahaha, so cool! What is that? Bamboo shoot, bamboo shoot, bamboo shoot . Yes, I thought it was a steamed bun. Grandma, this is so cool . Grandma, is it heavy? Grandma ‘s earrings : I’m used to wearing them and they don’t feel heavy anymore. Actually, they’re still quite heavy, after all. They’re silver. The Wa ethnic group’s unique large ear piercing decorations are the first time I’ve ever seen such big earrings. What are they doing? Cooking rice noodles and having a bowl of rice noodles. That’s a big piece of firewood. That’s a big piece of firewood. Hahaha. This big pot is really something. This big pot is so unique. They just pile up some firewood and set up the pot. In this quiet and peaceful town, Grandma is cooking this for me. I want a portion of this. Me: How much is a bowl? Grandma: 5 yuan. Please cook a little less , I’ll only eat a little. It’s okay, I’ll still give you 5 yuan. Please cook a little less. I just ate that rice noodle over there, I can’t eat too much, I’ll just taste it. You’ll cook it in that big pot, right? Okay , go ! Grandma’s big pot. Hey, what kind of soup is this ? Grandma , this is seasoning. What is that? Mi Xi Gen , Mi Xi Gen, I don’t know what kind of root it is, it’s a kind of mountain spice. 5 yuan a bowl, that’s so cheap ! A simple bowl is enough. I like simple food. Okay , this is purple rice noodles , is it made from purple rice? Grandma, um, I ate white ones over there. Let’s see this purple rice noodles. Have a small bowl to try, try the taste. Hmm , it smells fragrant . A simple small bowl. Hmm, this taste is very unique. This soup is very fragrant. The spices are very sticky and soft. It’s not very elastic. It’s a bit harder than the rice noodles from before , and the taste is different, completely different. This texture is better, like eating rice. Grandma, do you want some? I’m done eating . Have you had lunch yet? No, I’ve finished eating . I’ll treat you to a bowl , please. Okay, you guys eat first , hahaha. Do you want some, Grandma ? Grandma, I’ll treat you to a meal . Come on, come on, please. Thank you, thank you, thank you . I treated several Wa grandmothers to lunch. Rice noodles, take the bowl covered and take it home to eat. Add some seasoning. The things these Wa grandmothers sell are very cheap. Cut a cucumber and eat it. These Wa grandmothers really have a hard life. When I left, I bought a lot of their vegetables and fruits to support their business and do my part. I mean, I bought some to eat. Grandma didn’t understand, hahaha. Many of the Wa grandmothers here don’t speak Chinese. I said I’d eat and I’d give you money. Grandma didn’t want my money, but I still gave her money. This cucumber is so sweet, very sweet. Look at these bananas, they ‘re all tree-ripened bananas, naturally ripened green bananas. What kind of vegetable is this? Cilantro . Bye-bye, Grandma. This cucumber is delicious . The alcohol stall is still selling well. How much alcohol do you sell a day? Stall owner: Only a couple hundred yuan. How many bottles do you sell a day? Stall owner: Five or six bottles, that’s pretty good, sells better than I expected. The auntie selling alcohol can earn over 100 yuan a day, while the grandmas only earn a few yuan. It’s really not easy for them, hahaha . Look at this fabric, these threads are so colorful , they can be used to make clothes. The locals are very good at weaving and making their own ethnic costumes. This market isn’t big , but it’s very interesting, especially these drinking stalls. It’s a small farmers’ market, but very interesting. Let’s go, the market is over. Watermelon and pineapple. There weren’t many people today because there aren’t many people in this town to begin with , but it was still quite interesting . This Wa ethnic market is very interesting. When I left, a drunk man invited me to his house for dinner , but I had to take a bus, so I declined his offer. There are only a few buses a day on this mountaintop, and it’s a long way from the county town, so you have to leave early in the daytime. Interesting little market. Now I’m taking the bus. Another grandma smoking, hahaha. This is the Wa ethnic market in the mountains . Wa town, not far ahead is the mountain opposite Myanmar. Very high, shrouded in clouds and mist on the mountaintop. The terraced fields are all planted with coffee trees. Next, I’m going to explore the mysterious Wa ethnic altar deep in the mountains. I heard the sound of water ahead ; it seems that Dragon Pool, a spring, is the location of the altar. A Wa proverb says, “One bamboo cannot make a bush, and one person’s efforts are difficult to accomplish.” Interestingly , Longmoye (a Wa deity) is the sacred site of the Dragon King , a holy site for the Wa people. It is said that many living people were sacrificed there. These steps are covered in moss. What is this? A pond. It’s very slippery. This ground leads all the way up. Before the founding of New China, the Wa people were a primitive tribe. They had a kind of… A very ancient and terrifying sacrificial practice: human sacrifice. They would tie bleeding human heads to wooden stakes, dance around them, and communicate with the spirits . I’m going to the largest human sacrifice altar in Ximeng region, the Bull Head Altar. This is called the Human Head Stake; it was once used to tie human heads. In 1958, the Wa people’s tradition of human head sacrifice was abolished by the government , and bull head sacrifices were adopted instead. So what we see now are bull heads. Oh dear, this vine is blocking the way. The primeval forest is so humid! Another kind of fern, beautiful! Look, really beautiful! Look at this fern! Wow, this is amazing! The giant bull’s head in front of this forest is a bit scary . The deeper we go, the more human head stakes appear, which means we’re almost at the altar. Ahead is the sacred site of Longmoye. Longmoye is the name of a deity in the Wa language. I’m standing in the center of the altar. You can see the human heads from past sacrifices, but now they’ve all been replaced with bull heads. Look how many bull heads there are! Wow, all bull heads! Hundreds and thousands! If I imagine these bull heads as human heads, I can imagine how terrifying this place must have been in the past. Let’s go inside and see. The giant bull head is now just hanging there; before, it was all human heads. Oh my god, this is so terrifying! A forest of bull heads! Oh, Lin, it’s terrifying ! It’s so eerie ! I’m sweating profusely , and I smell a terrible stench of corpses. Look at these cliffs and rocks, they’re all covered in cow heads! Wow, even at such a high place, the cliff face is covered in them ! Let’s take a look. It’s said that these bamboo cages are used to hold fresh human heads. When the heads turn into skeletons, they are hung on wooden stakes. That’s incredible! Walking out, this place is chilling and eerie . The Wa people sacrifice human heads to their gods, hoping for more rain and a bountiful harvest in the coming year. So, this altar is located at a spring, and they hold a sacrifice every year . They believe that the more human heads used in the sacrifice, the more abundant the harvest will be in the coming year . But where do these human heads come from? Generally, the victims are people from other ethnic groups, especially those with fair skin. They believe that the whiter the skin, the better the blood used in the sacrifice. The process of obtaining human heads is called “headhunting,” similar to hunting. Wa men cut off the heads of other ethnic groups, especially the Tai, and bring them back in bamboo baskets. When they can’t catch any outsiders, they will also fight with other Wa villages, using the heads of prisoners of war . However, after the founding of the People’s Republic of China, this sacrifice had to be abolished. In fact, abolishing the human head sacrifice was not easy. When the People’s Republic of China was first established, Chairman Mao suggested that the Wa people change this bad custom and use monkey heads instead of human heads. However, this did not last long, and many Wa people continued to use human heads for sacrifice. At this time, many people within the Wa community also advocated abolishing the sacrifice , ending tribal life, and integrating into modern society. They fought against those who were unwilling to abolish it. In the end, the number of people advocating abolition increased, and only a few extreme conservatives remained. But these few people went mad in the end. In 1957, 13 people sent by the central government to the area were killed. In 1957, 190 people were killed for sacrificial purposes, and another 90 were killed in 1958. Later that year, a law was enacted with strong measures, and the last of the sacrificial personnel were executed, finally abolishing this barbaric custom. Looking back at history, more than 60 years later, the Wa people have fully integrated into modern life. This altar has become a tourist attraction. My impression of the Wa people today is that they are hardworking, kind, simple, and hospitable. I think civilization and progress will change everyone; the past cannot define them today. Water flows down and gathers into a lake called Dragon Pool. Dragon Pool is very large, with a hole at the bottom. It is said to be connected to a lake in Myanmar. Sometimes, both lakes become murky at the same time. It’s very beautiful and very quiet; there’s not a single person. Ximeng County is just across the lake. Tomorrow morning, I’ll take everyone to stroll around the county town. It’s really beautiful ; there are very few people. It ‘s a very quiet county town. A large wooden drum; the Awa people singing new songs. Look at these street scenes. Deep fog. Small market. Not many things. There are many fruit vendors. 10 yuan for 4 jin . This market has some local specialties: mushrooms! And there are these big red mushrooms, oh, these are huge, as big as a palm ! Termitomyces mushrooms … what kind of mushroom is this? 2. A bientôt. Louis
