神奈川県伊勢原市に残る「かながわの古道50選」のひとつ、日陰道を歩いた。源頼朝や北条政子も日向薬師に参拝する際に通ったと伝わる道は、今もひっそりと山間に続いている。足元には電気柵が張り巡らされ、獣害を防ぐ工夫が人と自然の境界を示していた。やがて視線の先に彼岸花の群生が現れ、赤い彩りの中に観光客の姿が重なって季節の賑わいを告げる。分かれ道に差しかかると、狭い道は柵で塞がれ、進めるのは右の道だけ。そこは人影もなく、蚊の群れと崖の縁が迫り、日陰道の名のとおり薄暗さが続いていた。抜け出した先には砂防ダムの人工的な姿があり、自然の景観の中に現代の暮らしの痕跡が入り込んでいた。道端に置かれた塩とスプレーは、熱中症対策ではなくヤマビルを退けるためのものだと後で知る。さらに進むと庚申塔が立ち、左右には彼岸花の群生地が広がっていた。歴史の参道と季節の花、そして人の工夫が重なり合い、古道を歩く旅は今も続く暮らしと祈りの物語を映し出していた。
