Walking around Japan’s Nangū Taisha and hiking up Mt. Nangū to Hidemoto’s encampment on a sunny and bright, but cold and chilly, afternoon in January.

Mt. Nangū is located in Tarui Town, which can itself be found about ten minutes or so from Gifu City by train. Tarui is a small town but with a big history, and several big battles took place there during and after the Sengoku period. In the video, starting from Tarui Station, I visit Nangū Taisha, literally, Nangū Grand Shrine, one of the oldest shrines in Japan, and walk around the….courtyard? I don’t know the correct nomenclature…..anyway, after that, I go up the mountain itself to view Mōri Hidemoto’s encampment, which has a rather wonderful view of Gifu prefecture and also Aichi. In the video, it’s a little difficult due to the haze, but it was possible to see Nagoya (at least, I think it was Nagoya) from the vantage point. Probably be even better in summer time, though I fear there’d be too many people there to get a good shot at the time…as it was, it was completely empty when I was there today.
