カプドナック、フランスの最も美しい村のひとつ / フランス南西部 / かわいい猫 / 中世の街並み / 2025年春の旅3 / Beautiful village, Capdenac, France
Hello everyone! This is Sayaka from quatre saisons. We’ve arrived at our destination this time: Capdenac. In late May 2025, my husband Matthieu and I went on a six-day trip to south-west France and we came here after visiting Figeac. (Do take a look at the Figeac video too.) Hello! We’ve arrived in the village of Capdenac, about a 10-minute drive from Figeac, which we introduced in our last video. Right then, let’s go and explore the village! Capdenac is actually a town, but the hilltop we’re on now is the old village centre, selected as one of France’s Most Beautiful Villages. Is this a castle? It has a tower(Donjon) – it would be lovely to climb up there. It’s very close to Figeac, yet the village itself is quite empty. The forecast called for rain today, but thankfully it held off. The shape of the Donjonlooks like Lego. This pointed arch gate, La Porte Comtale, was the entrance to the fortress. There’s a rope here. Is this for people to climb up, or for hoisting goods up and down? There was the town hall (Mairie). There was a cat! I didn’t see a single cat in Figeac, which I visited just before, so I was delighted to meet one here! This building appears to be a dovecote. (pigeonnier) There were two cats. This cat is very used to people. The cat I was photographing was sleeping contentedly. Bye-bye! The donjon was closed for a break when we visited, so we decided to go later. We heard there was a “Medieval Garden” above, so we went to see it. There were lots of lovely flowers in bloom. In this garden, they seemed to be growing herbs used as medicine in medieval times. Last year, when we visited Cardaillac, also in the Lot department, there was a medieval garden there too. (Do take a look at the Cardaillac video!) So this is where the water comes from. It’s lovely that you can have a picnic here! From here, you can enjoy a splendid view. Behind the church was a cemetery. We’ll visit the church after lunch. On the left were the remains of a ruined wall. This village was once surrounded by walls, wasn’t it? We decided to ask at the restaurant opposite if lunch was still available. We hadn’t booked, and it was past 13:00, but they could still serve us. What a relief! First came the starter salad. It looked absolutely delicious. It is a salad with fried goat’s cheese. The dressing was a vinaigrette sauce. The main course was sausage. This was sausage from the neighbouring department of Aveyron. There was ketchup, mustard, and mayonnaise too. The sausage was packed with herbs and spices, giving it a really strong flavour. Matthieu used the mayonnaise for his potatoes. I ordered the same sausage! It was so flavourful, delicious even on its own. I’d love to have it again! I had mine with just a tiny bit of mustard. Dessert arrived! This was a pear and chocolate tart. I adore chocolate and pear tarts! This was also absolutely delicious. Honey was drizzled over it too. Matthieu forgot to order coffee and only did so after finishing dessert. After lunch, we went for a stroll around the village. The bell chimed to signal half past two. We are now entering the church. The current building of this Saint-Jean-Baptiste Church was constructed in the 18th century. In 1722, it was decided to build a new church on the site of the old monastery, which had suffered extensive damage during the religious wars. It features a magnificent altar and a Baroque altarpiece, the painting dating back to the 18th century. At the back of this room, you can see a wooden statue of Saint Gérard embracing the fortified castle of this village, Capdenac. The classical-style doorway houses a statue of Saint John the Baptist, to whom this church is dedicated. As the village sits atop a hill, it offers splendid views. A castle-like building is visible. This is the Lot River. Though currently in the Lot department, I mistakenly thought this river was the Dordogne. There appeared to be a garden here, so I decided to go and see. There was a very small, charming little garden. I wondered if the students from this village were tending to this garden as part of their lessons or such. There was another cat. I do hope this cat will play with us. The little cat came over to him! The little cat’s tail moves so much. Would you believe it, there was another cat too. This little cat seemed rather wary and wandered off. When Matthieu tried to approach, the cat ran away. He was looking up as if to jump, but seemed curious about him too. When Matthieu approached, it jumped away to the other side. This cat is quite friendly. This cat looks just like a princess. We said goodbye to the cat, we really must move on now. We’re heading to the tourist information centre next. The building in front of us is undergoing renovation work. Being an old building, it seems likely to take longer than usual. There was a patisserie! But unfortunately, it was closed. We arrived at the tourist information centre. Here, we obtained a town map and a brochure with information. We are now heading to the English Fountain, a place recommended by the tourist information centre. The admission ticket to the English Fountain is the same as the ticket for the Donjon. (€2.50 per person) Admission tickets can be purchased at either the tourist information centre or the donjon, but the entrance code required to go to the English Fountain is not given at the donjon, so you need to go to the tourist information centre to ask for it. We were lucky because we went to the donjon first and knew that information. There are many rivers near this village, so I thought it might not be that difficult to have a spring. There are no rivers near Aix-en-Provence where I live, so it was difficult to create a spring. It says at the entrance that there is a Roman spring. We are now going to the place where the fountain is located, but it was quite a steep downhill slope. I was scared that if I didn’t walk carefully, I might fall. The town you can see on this side is Capdenac. There is also a railway station and a port. We entered the code we were given at the tourist information centre and went to the fountain beyond the door. Beyond the door was an even steeper descent, so I carefully made my way down. It was quite a descent. There was even a bench provided for resting! We can see a splendid view from here! I could hear the sound of water! This cave-like spring is said to have been built by the Romans around 51 BC. During the Hundred Years’ War, Capdenac withstood numerous sieges thanks to the spring, including those by English forces. Electricity works here! Amazing. This spring consists of two cave-like water basins. One is elliptical and lined with lead for waterproofing. The other is rectangular and serves as a reservoir. Water flows down from the plateau to this spot.
It seems the water flowing down from the plateau is channelled through this narrow passage to accumulate in the basin. So it gathers here.
A thick wall made of large rocks protects access to the basin. Right, time to head back. This ruin had completely vanished by the 19th century, but was rediscovered thanks to a volunteer team working for over a month during the summer of 1981. The treads of the steps were narrow and unstable, so it felt a bit scary – one had to be careful not to slip and fall. I’m glad we made it back safely! Having already walked so much that day, I felt I would sleep well. The gentle breeze felt pleasant. We’re heading towards the donjon now. This front gate, the Porte Comtale, was the first thing we spotted upon arriving in the village. Heading this way, you’ll find the Town Hall and the Donjon. We’ve returned to the Donjon. I looked to see if the cats we met earlier was still around, but they weren’t in the same spot anymore. The Donjon normally costs €2.50 to enter, but we didn’t pay as we could get in with our ticket for the Fountain of England. Here, there were exhibits and explanations. This donjon was likely built around the 13th to 14th century for military purposes, such as barracks and guard rooms. It was also central to Capdenac’s defensive system, offering a commanding view over the town and its surroundings, symbolically demonstrating the lord’s power. The view from here is truly splendid. I thought the colours of the roofs on the houses in this village were lovely. There used to be a tower here, but has it been destroyed? We head back down the stairs! This time, we visited Capdenac. The village is small, but it has plenty of sights to see and was thoroughly enjoyable. We’ll now move on to a different village, and then head to our accommodation for the night. The next video will also feature a village selected as one of France’s Most Beautiful Villages! Thank you for watching this video to the end. See you in the next one!
