Taniozaki Viaduct
Taniozaki Town, Nishi Ward, Kumamoto City Explanation of Taniozaki Viaduct The roads in Kumamoto City are so congested that you might wonder if they were “built to cause traffic jams.” Under these circumstances, National Route 3, which runs through the center of Kumamoto, is experiencing chronic traffic congestion. The roads designed to alleviate this congestion are the Kumamoto North Bypass (R57) heading east and the Kumamoto West Ring Road (General Prefectural Road Sunahara Yomogi Line: Sunahara IC to Shimosuzurigawa IC) heading west. This time, we will introduce the Taniozaki Viaduct (total length 508m, height 48.5m), which forms part of the Kumamoto West Loop Line, which just opened on October 19, 2025. This road is for automobiles only. The viaduct was constructed using a method called the “cantilever erection method,” in which the bridge body is extended to the left and right from the piers toward the center of the span. This construction method does not require erecting supports from the ground, so it is often used for long bridges in mountainous areas or deep valleys. It’s a very interesting construction method, so we’ll also be releasing a video of the construction in progress.
