在成都,另一种生活:凌晨五点的打工人、古老的都江堰、和清晨的大熊猫!

It’s 5:30 AM now. I’m going to the so-called labor market in Chengdu. December 4th, 2023. This is my first time in Chengdu. It’s especially cold on the streets at 5 AM. I’m heading to the Chengdu Wanliu Labor Market. I heard that even before dawn, hundreds or even thousands of people are already there, braving the cold morning wind, just waiting for a job. Early this morning, I can already see all sorts of people carrying large and small bags, heading in that direction. Actually, today is November 2025. This film about Chengdu was shot almost two years ago (December 2023). So, after filming… I haven’t edited it since then, and it wasn’t until today that I saw these scenes for the first time. Suddenly, I felt a sense of time passing quickly. The naivety, childishness, and curiosity of the past seem quite different today. It made me realize that two years have passed since I started working on the road . Wow, this scene is spectacular! I’ve never seen anything like it . It ‘s 5:30 in the morning now , and I heard that at peak times, there are thousands of people here waiting to find work, like they’re picking up odd jobs. It feels like the middle of the night , and these breakfast stalls are already bustling with activity. ” WeChat payment: 2 yuan. I’ll buy 3 yuan worth. Okay, okay , steamed buns. What kind of vegetables do you want? Two eggs. Two eggs. Hmm, come on, come on , egg noodles and wontons . Five yuan for a wonton, quite a lot. This portion has cilantro , chili peppers, and green peppers . WeChat payment: 2 yuan. I’ll buy a steamed bun. Hello , ma’am, what time do you set up your stall this morning ? This morning? Around 3 a.m. There are already people here at 3 a.m.? Yes, yes, yes. I saw some information online saying that Wanliu Road is the largest construction site labor market in Chengdu because this area is a demolition area , a suburban area with many new buildings to the south .” Around 5 a.m., when the crowds are at their peak , thousands of workers have gathered here, waiting to be hired. Most of these workers are day laborers or temporary workers , mainly migrant workers from rural areas, primarily middle-aged and elderly. They wait to be picked up by foremen or contractors to go to construction sites to work, where they are paid and leave on the same day . ” That steamed bun? That egg? Okay, I’ll take it. Sister, what time did you set up your stall this morning? Three or four o’clock. ” I saw some data yesterday. Chengdu has been ranked first among the new first-tier cities for many years, a bustling metropolis. The scene before me is probably another side of Chengdu that most people have never seen. In fact, this kind of early morning job-hunting happens in Chengdu and many other cities in China. Every day , hundreds or thousands of people gather in these labor markets before dawn , carrying tools and lunchboxes. They hope that by getting up early, they can earn a little bit of income, even if it is very meager. Some of them come from other provinces, and some rent near the labor market. They may have elderly parents and young children to support, be relatively old , and lack special skills. In the traditional job market, they are not very well received. This is already… This is how they strive to make a living. There are more than ten breakfast stalls alone. Okay, here you go.
Add some yogurt, 5 yuan, 6 yuan , yogurt 3 yuan. Give me two bowls of glutinous rice balls, okay, two please. Most people order the 2 yuan glutinous rice balls , which have ten in them , and add a little sugar. Some people might order the 3 yuan glutinous rice balls with an egg. I really find it unbelievable. Such a big bowl ! My hands feel so heavy holding this bowl. It’s only 5 yuan , and the dumplings are really high quality . I feel it’s such a good deal. There are more than ten of them , and they all have thin skins and thick fillings. This one is called a wonton . You can see that this is a business for ordinary people. It has to be truly cost-effective so that the workers who come here to wait for work every day will come to you. Small profits but quick turnover. The morning chill blows through the open street. I see a man who looks like a foreman walking down the street. The crowd is like they’ve been ignited and instantly surround him. This scene plays out every day. For these workers, being able to grab this job means they can earn money today. I don’t remember many details of the day I was able to get a meal and film , but I do remember a man walking up to me and saying that many people couldn’t find work and were already in a bad mood. He said if I continued filming, someone might catch me and beat me up. I thought to myself, I came here to document this group and to raise public awareness of their plight , so I was quite surprised when he said that to me. Last night, I talked to an older man who said that winter is the off-season, so there are fewer people . During peak season, there can be thousands of people here. In their backpacks, besides their usual work tools , they also bring lunch prepared at 3 or 4 a.m. that they got up early to prepare . I looked around and it seemed like there weren’t any people my age . I was standing here, and someone actually came up to me and asked if I was hiring. There are so many people. If they haven’t found anyone by 7 a.m. or at the latest 8 a.m. , they’ll turn back because if they still can’t find anyone by then, there won’t be any more recruiters coming back . They can only work a few days a month, sometimes 10 or 20 days. The boss came here, so people swarmed around. What’s going on here? If these workers spot a boss , they’ll run and chase after him like crazy . It’s like the boss is being surrounded, and the workers are practically robbing him, as if they don’t need to work . It’s 7:21 now, and there are still quite a few people. When I first arrived this morning, I didn’t quite understand what they were saying. They were saying “no way out.” I didn’t understand what ” no way out” meant. Later I realized it means there’s no work (can’t find a job). Don’t film it because if you film it and post it online, more people will know about this place, and even more people will come here looking for work, making it even harder to find a job (more intense competition). Where is it? It’s getting light here now. If these workers still can’t find it, there’s an 80-90% chance they won’t find it today. It’s almost 8 o’clock, and these workers are probably still not giving up and have decided to wait a little longer. We just saw Chengdu at dawn, so let’s see what Chengdu is like during the day. Our first stop is the most famous Dujiangyan Scenic Area. Please hold on tight, I set my alarm for 4 o’clock this morning. I’m so tired! Chengdu truly lives up to its reputation as a big city. Its entire subway system reminds me of Shenzhen. Take Chengdu Metro Line 2 to the terminal station, Xipu Station, and exit from Exit A. After exiting, you ‘ll arrive at Xipu High-Speed Railway Station. From there , take the high-speed train to Dujiangyan. From Xipu Station, head to Lidui Park . Be careful of the gap between the train and the platform ; you might slip and fall. Now we’ve arrived at Lidui Park Station. After exiting, you’ll reach the entrance to the scenic area. The river is surging! This panda is so cute, taking a selfie ! Wow, the river here is incredibly turbulent . Why is that? It says “Xuanhua Gate of Guanxian” above. Because during the Qin Dynasty, Dujiangyan was called Guanxian. At that time, the Qin Dynasty sent Li Bing and his son to the Chengdu Plain to control the floods . The Minjiang River flows swiftly. Everyone, look inside! I’m now walking through the ancient city of Guanxian, heading towards Dujiangyan. Okay, I’m not at the ticket office yet. I’m walking towards Baopingkou (Bottle-Neck Mouth) based on the map. Baopingkou is the very famous Baopingkou in the Dujiangyan Irrigation System. It ‘s the oldest and still in use super water conservancy project. Baopingkou is where Li Bing and his son carved a large opening in Yulei Mountain to divert the Minjiang River into the Chengdu Plain. The water from Baopingkou flows forward into the Chengdu Plain, where it’s called the Inner River. The opposite side is called the Outer River . The Outer River follows the original Minjiang River channel. The Inner River is because Li Bing and his son carved the Yulei Mountain… The blasting created a breach (Baopingkou) , diverting the flow in this direction and serving as a diversion point. Explaining Dujiangyan in detail would require a considerable amount of space, so before we begin, let’s remember that the breach in front of us is called Baopingkou, and the mountain to its right is called Yulei Mountain. Dujiangyan is located in the transition zone between the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the Chengdu Plain. From the plateau to the plain, the terrain changes drastically . Therefore, the Minjiang River, flowing down from the mountains of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, becomes particularly turbulent and turbulent here. During the rainy season, it turns the entire Chengdu Plain into a vast expanse of water. At the same time, an even more challenging problem is that the Minjiang River, after rushing out of the mountain pass, does not flow directly into the plain area … The uneven flow , caused by the river’s collision with the Yulei Mountain it had just encountered, forced the river to flow southwards. This resulted in the Chengdu Plain experiencing drought in the east and flooding in the west; one side was ravaged by floods , while the other suffered from severe drought. Thus, a water management campaign lasting over 2,000 years began, the most famous of which was the Dujiangyan Irrigation System. The first dam we see is called the Jingang Dam, which divides the Minjiang River into the outer river (near the west) and the inner river (closer to Yulei Mountain) . The top of the dam is called the Fish Mouth. The Fish Mouth allows for a fixed proportion of water flow. During the high-water season, when the Minjiang River’s flow is large, 60% of the water flowing through the Fish Mouth enters the outer river, and 40% enters the inner river. During the dry season… During the flood season, the situation is exactly the opposite , hence the term “four-six water division.” At the end of the Jingang Dike, there is a low weir called Feisha Weir, which is only two meters higher than the riverbed . When floods come, the water level of the inner river rises rapidly , and the water flowing over the weir overflows into the outer river. At the same time, the sand and gravel in the inner river are also discharged along Feisha Weir by the circulation of the river bend, hence the name “Feisha Weir.” The third part of the project is a gap located on the ridge of Yulei Mountain. The water of the inner river flows through this gap into the vast Chengdu Plain. Thus , the Fish Mouth, Feisha Weir, Baopingkou, and other auxiliary facilities together form this magnificent super-engineering project, Dujiangyan, built by Li Bing and his son more than 2,000 years ago . The Dujiangyan Irrigation System can be said to have opened the tap for the Chengdu Plain’s water supply. With irrigation, the Chengdu Plain transformed from a land prone to drought and floods into a fertile plain with vast fields, earning Chengdu the reputation of the “Land of Abundance” and making it one of the economic centers of Southwest China. Just now, at the Baopingkou (Bottle-Neck Pass), uh , to the right, there ‘s a path leading up the mountain . Going up there, there’s a pavilion. From the pavilion, you should be able to see Dujiangyan in the distance. These crispy cartilage skewers are 10 yuan a skewer; there are many of them along the street, it seems to be a local specialty. They’re piping hot, and they’d be even more fragrant with some scallions or cilantro. Nanqiao Bridge was built in 1878. How about trying some roasted sweet potatoes? They’re stone-fried… As mentioned earlier, the Dujiangyan Irrigation System contributed to the Chengdu Plain’s reputation as the “Land of Abundance,” making it a treasure trove of fertile land. This is because the water flowing from the Baopingkou ( Bottle-Neck Slope) was divided into two and then four rivers by people throughout history, resulting in the Puyang River, Baitiao River, and Zouma River. The four rivers of Jiang’an River diverge on the plains, and later, the main canals further subdivide into more and smaller waterways and irrigation ditches. They flow through fields and towns, crisscrossing like a spider web, forming a vast radial irrigation system . During the Song Dynasty, the irrigated area reached 1,300 square kilometers, larger than the area of Hong Kong. Therefore, Dujiangyan is a truly super project. It not only mitigated floods but also transformed water hazards into irrigation power , nurturing the downstream metropolis of Chengdu. Some porters carry fried sweet potatoes and dried sweet potatoes for sale here. Coming out of the South Bridge, there’s a square here, where the ticket office is located, not far from the South Bridge. Along this riverside walkway, there are scattered restaurants situated on the beautiful, emerald green Minjiang River. A bowl of tofu pudding costs 6 yuan with white sugar. You can also add spicy chili sauce, bean sauce, or soy sauce. Where are you from? Guangxi? Yes , now across the river… Ah, in the past, the water was diverted through this sandbar. In modern times, with technological advancements, they use these sluice gates . And wow, the ginkgo trees are yellow, so beautiful! Hidden under the blue sky, bird fighting, bird walking, playing cards— so peaceful and comfortable! This is a riverside park; elderly people are sunbathing and playing cards here, very content. The weather is excellent today . Under the sun, it’s just the right temperature—neither too hot nor too cold . In the shade, you ‘d need to wear a light jacket. I’m currently around here. If I walk forward, it gets very narrow. The narrow area in front of the Yangtianwo Fish Mouth is called Yangtianwo Fish Mouth because it’s so narrow. On either side are two channels from the Minjiang River. If you stand at the narrowest point and look down to the left and right, the feeling must be quite wonderful. Yangtianwo is located above the Neijiang main canal. Its water conservancy facilities are used to regulate and divert the Neijiang water system. The construction of the Dujiangyan Irrigation System has made flood control a priority in western Sichuan, where droughts are mitigated by water diversion and rains by blocking the sluice gates . Knowing no famine or barren years, the land is called the Land of Abundance (excerpt from *Huayang Guozhi*, *Shu Zhi*). You can clearly see that the water is more turbulent over there because the sluice gate is open , while over here it’s closed. In the distance, it seems calm, but just across the iron gate lies a raging torrent. Looking at it, you might feel a little frightened. After the gate is opened, the water flows smoothly, without the huge crashing sound of the blocked flow. Not far from the Baopingkou (Bottle-Neck Pass ) is Nanqiao. Chengdu can be considered the largest, most developed, and most prosperous metropolis in Southwest China . However, this city… Chengdu possesses a tranquil , relaxed lifestyle rarely seen in bustling metropolises , and the place that best embodies this mentality and attitude towards life is Chengdu’s teahouses . Looking across the river at the teahouses in Wangjianglou Park, one can see many tall bamboo trees, making it easy to understand why so many Chengdu teahouses give the impression of bamboo-made tables and chairs. Wangjianglou Park is said to be Chengdu’s most beautiful park; you can hear the clatter of mahjong tiles from afar – this is Chengdu’s tea culture. Mahjong culture reflects Chengdu’s leisurely and comfortable side. As night fell, I arrived at Chunxi Road, Chengdu’s most famous commercial district. I cried so hard and ate… Do you know where spicy strips originated after all these years ? They’re so cute! They’re in Chengdu! You can see panda elements everywhere, so today we’re coming to the Chengdu Zoo to see the national treasure, the panda. The self-service ticket price is quite reasonable at 20 yuan. It’s early December now, and the temperature in Chengdu is 13 degrees Celsius. This zoo is especially popular with parents and children. Many visitors are parents and children . The children in Chengdu are so lucky! They’ve been seeing pandas since they were little. The map showing the distribution of rare animals in China shows that Sichuan has rare animals such as giant pandas, macaques , golden monkeys, black-necked cranes, and mandarin ducks . I’ve grown up so much, and there are so many animals I haven’t seen before, and I haven’t even seen a giant panda yet ! The panda is sleeping . That concludes this episode. I’m so glad you watched this far. This video was filmed by Ashu two years ago. Although it looks a bit immature today , the passion for exploring the world is at its strongest. Just like different stages of life, each with its ups and downs, whether good or bad, outstanding or dull, I’m willing to accept it all because every experience is a part of my life. If you like my videos, please like and subscribe to my channel. Oh, this monkey, which I think has the most distinctive features, is called the Black-capped Monkey. The most shocking thing was seeing this giraffe. It’s so tall! I heard several people passing by exclaim in amazement, ” It ‘s so tall! ” Thank you for watching, liking, and subscribing.
