Top 16 Best Spots for Spectacular Autumn Foliage on Rocky Mountains in Eastern Japan Yamadera ( Yamagata Prefecture ) Yamadera is properly called Hojuzan Risshakuji Temple. It is a temple of the Tendai sect, founded by Jikaku Daishi in the 2nd year of Jogan (860). Niomon Gate The temple complex is built on a steep rocky hill. The Daibutsuden (Great Buddha Hall) and Okunoin (Inner sanctuary) at the top of the mountain are reached by 1,015 stone stairs. It takes about 30 to 40 minutes to reach the top. Godaido Hall Godaido Hall is a Buddhist temple where the Godai Myoo is enshrined to pray for peace and tranquility. It is also the best observatory in the temple. ■山寺 ( 山形県 )
山寺(やまでら)は、貞観2年 (860) に慈覚大師が開いた、天台宗の寺院です。急峻な岩山を縫うように伽藍が建てられており、頂上の大仏殿と奥之院までは石階段が千十五段あり、頂上に至るまで約30~40分ほど時間を要します。

■霊山 ( 福島県 )
霊山(りょうぜん)は、福島県北部に位置する標高825mの山で、「日本の紅葉百選」に選定されています。阿武隈高地の北部に位置する玄武岩の溶岩台地で、丘陵は起伏に富み、奇岩を連ねる岩山です。

■馬仙峡 ( 岩手県 )
馬仙峡(ばせんきょう)は、岩手県北部に位置する峡谷で、国の「名勝」に指定されています。「男神岩・女神岩(おがみいわ・めがみいわ)」の二つの巨岩は馬仙峡のシンボルで、夫婦岩としては日本一の規模を誇ります。

■久慈渓流 ( 岩手県 )
久慈渓流(くじけいりゅう)は、岩手県北東部に位置する渓谷・渓流で、「日本の紅葉百選」に選定されています。北上山地に源を発する久慈川の浸食で形成された渓谷で、水際まで迫る断崖絶壁や巨岩・奇岩が見所です。

■きみまち阪県立自然公園 ( 秋田県 )
きみまち阪公園は、秋田県北部の能代市にある景勝地で、東西に流れる米代川に沿って断崖絶壁の屏風岩がそびえ立ち、春の桜・お花見や、秋の紅葉スポットとして有名です。

■岨谷峡 ( 秋田県 )
岨谷峡(そうやきょう)は、秋田県のちょうど真ん中に位置する峡谷で、「日本の紅葉百選」に選定されています。岩見川の上流域に、断崖絶壁が300m以上にわたって続く峡谷で、高くそびえ立つ岩と、澄み切った清流を眺めながら散策できます。

■鳴子峡 ( 宮城県 )
鳴子峡(なるこきょう)は、宮城県北西部に位置する深さ100mにおよぶ大峡谷で、「日本の紅葉百選」に選定されています。大谷川の侵蝕により刻まれた峡谷と大深沢橋を一望できます。

■材木岩 ( 宮城県 )
材木岩(ざいもくいわ)は、宮城県南部を流れる白石川流域にある景勝地で、高さ100mにも及ぶ柱状節理によって形成された断崖絶壁です。あたかも材木を縦に並べたような独特の景観が名称の由来で、国の「天然記念物」にも指定されています。

■華厳ノ滝 ( 栃木県 )
華厳ノ滝は、奥日光・中禅寺湖の流出口にかかる滝で、「日本三大瀑布」の一つに数えられます。落差97mの断崖を豪快に流れ落ちる壮大な滝で、名瀑が多い日光周辺の中でも際立つ存在です。

■中津峡 ( 埼玉県 )
中津峡(なかつきょう)は、埼玉県の奥秩父エリアにある峡谷で、紅葉の名所として知られており「日本の紅葉百選」に選定されています。高さ100mにも及ぶ断崖絶壁や奇岩群、岩間から流れ落ちる小滝も点在し、紅葉した木々との組合せは絶品です。

■両神山と紅葉 ( 埼玉県 )
中津峡の奥地から群馬県へ抜ける「林道金山志賀坂線」では「日本百名山」の一つに数えられる両神山(りょうかみさん)も望めます。両神山は秩父山地の北端にある山で標高は1,723mです。

■吾妻渓谷 ( 群馬県 )
吾妻渓谷は、群馬県の北西部に位置する渓谷で、国の名勝に指定されています。渓谷沿いには遊歩道も整備されており、渓谷美を堪能しながら散策できます。八丁暗がりや屏風岩、丸岩城のような見所があり、険しい岩肌を紅葉の木々が覆う渓谷美は圧巻です。

■妙義山 ( 群馬県 )
