波士顿周边游|在美国看徽派古宅,一砖一瓦从中国搬至美国丨女巫镇塞勒姆的黑历史 ,世界女巫之都丨马克吐温的破产豪宅
Go fast, kitty, go fast, go fast , hello everyone, welcome back to SS Hifive ‘s North American travelogue, memories of 2024 10 At the end of the month, thanks to Boston’s geographical location, we can explore and visit many different urban clusters within a 1-3 hour drive from Fangcheng Camp . This time I’m sharing my urban experiences in Providence, Rhode Island , Salem , Massachusetts, and Hartford, Connecticut. Thank you for sharing these little fragments of autumn life with us . Okay, let’s go together. Let’s fix this today. Look, I already bought this thing above and it has been delivered. It is specially used to patch these holes. I don’t know if it works well. Let’s give it a try. It is specially used to patch tents. Before patching, you need to use this kind of alcohol paper to wipe the surrounding area clean. In fact, it is just glued on, so you have to wipe the surrounding area clean. The inside is still clean, but the outside is quite dirty . The back is like this and the back is like this, so I was wondering which side should I stick it on. Should I stick it on the inside or the outside ? I was very confused. In the end, I used two pieces to patch it . Two and a half pieces, one and a half pieces. This patched one and a small patch on this side. We will see if this works and how long it can last . It says that it needs to be left for 24 hours after patching. I can leave it for a few days and then open it again to see if anything has gotten worse . We’ll just have to wait and see. It’s the weekend again ! Yeah, we set out from the campground today and arrived at Rhode Island , the smallest state in the US . Our campground is in Massachusetts , but it’s very close to Rhode Island. It’s very close to their largest city, Providence, which is also their capital. It’s only 30 minutes away from their capital, which is closer than Boston. So staying at this campground is great because you can enjoy both . We also saw another American RV YouTuber who had recently visited New England. He said it’s not easy to tow an RV there. Indeed, I just saw that many bridges have low height restrictions . It seems that older cities and areas in the East are more accessible. There are some relatively low bridges, so be careful. Ding ding ding ~ We finally arrived at the island of Rhode Island. Hahaha , it is not an island . Although it is called Rhode Island , most of its land is on the mainland. This state is the smallest state in the United States. It covers an area of only more than 3,000 square kilometers. In fact, it is equivalent to half of Shanghai. Even our Kaifeng and Zhengzhou are much larger than it. It is a very small state. It was the first state to declare independence from British colonial rule. Therefore, it is also called the independent state . So let’s take a tour of this small, old and exquisite place today . Okay, we are now in the city center of Providence. This is the heart of the city. Kennedy Plaza is a plaza that blends classic and modern elements, surrounded by buildings of varying styles. The magnificent federal building in front of you, with its off-white facade and carved details, tells the city’s history , while the towering financial tower behind it represents its modernity and vitality. Although Providence is a small city, it retains the unique art and warmth of New England. Walking down the street, every building and every light and shadow has its own story. Continue walking along Kennedy Plaza and you will arrive at Providence’s financial district. This road is adjacent to the Providence River, and looking up the hill you can see the famous college. Over the hill sit Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design. The white-steepled church in the distance is the oldest Baptist church in the United States. This area blends academia, art, and urban life. A stroll through it reveals both the classical elegance of New England and the vitality of students and creators. There’s a wonderful window display, and look at this reflection. It feels like a tree, and these paintings are hung on the reflection of the tree. In front of us is the Rhode Island School of Design , one of the top art and design schools in the United States, and a producer of world-class creative talent. The entire campus blends into the city blocks, with red brick buildings, art installations , and student works. There’s a strong artistic atmosphere everywhere. Wow, this college street has a very British feel . Yes, there are high-rise buildings on this side, and the historic district on this side. This slope is so steep. Are you tired? I imagine if it snows and freezes in winter , this road might be closed. Its heart-shaped leaves, half green and half yellow, keep climbing the slope. We are now at the college. On the hill, on the academic path, we keep climbing up College Hill. Here we are, a large area of buildings that are all Rhode Island School of Design. And now we are climbing up. Right above is Brown University. The two schools are right next to each other , so it’s very special. Brown University and Rhode Island School of Art and Design can take each other’s classes , and they can take each other’s classes . They also have a joint double degree, which means you can take both degrees at the same time . We are now at Brown University, a member of the Ivy League in the United States. Founded in 1764, it has a history of over 250 years. The campus is located on College Hill in Providence. The red brick buildings, green trees and church spires form a typical New England style. Brown University is known for its free and open academic atmosphere. Students can design their own curriculum and there are no fixed required courses. This is why many people like it. It encourages exploration, innovation , and even unconventional thinking. In such an environment, the artistic atmosphere of Rhode Island School of Design and the academic spirit of Brown are perfectly integrated, making the whole city full of knowledge and creative energy. We are now going to this Little Italy called Federico Hill, which is actually called federal Hill is also a very famous area in Providence. Italians gather there, which is where many Italian dishes are made. Let’s go try Little Italy now. We have already sat down and don’t know what to eat. Thanks to GPT for the recommendation. You can give it a try next time to see if he’s reliable. He just recommended an appetizer , and now we’re going to ask him to recommend a main course. This starter is a combination , a set. Thank you, thank you. Let’s eat first. Everyone can try this restaurant. It ‘s very good . Thank you , little bit . Look, it’s very Italian. I can even feel the cheese in it, and then you asked him to add more cheese. This was once the earliest area where Italian immigrants settled, and it still retains a strong Italian culture. The streets are filled with the aroma of fresh bread and coffee. The old-fashioned restaurants have red and white checkered tablecloths and the iconic arches symbolize unity and prosperity. As night fell, we arrived at Providence’s most special event, the Fire and Water Festival , the city’s most representative art celebration. Dozens of braziers are lit on the Providence River. They will be lit on June 4th. And I see that today’s episode is sponsored by a music program at Brown University , so
you should be able to see a lot of performances by their students . Just now, they were playing drums and singing, and they were manually lighting the fire and passing the flame. Is this what they call passing the torch? Haha, the flames danced on the water, synced with the music and the crowd’s laughter, and the whole city was set ablaze. The Fire and Water Festival was first founded by artist Barnaby Evans in the 1990s. Since then, it has become a symbol of Providence , attracting tourists from all over the world. Every time a fire is lit, it’s like a dialogue between the city and art. It ‘s romantic and gives people a sense of unity. This is also my favorite thing about Providence. After visiting the Fire and Water Festival, let’s go to their market. It’s a bit like a Christmas market in Europe, which is quite interesting . Can we change the direction for him? We just parked the car and then stopped at this one next to the witch town. Their subway station says it’s two dollars a day on weekends, but did you see it? It’s 40 dollars a day. On weekends, it’s only 10. In October, it was 40 dollars. Because witches are particularly popular in witch towns during Halloween in October , everyone came here in October. The next day, we arrived at the famous witch town of Salem. It is famous for the witch trials in the 17th century. The whole city retains traces of that history . Now, every October, Salem becomes the main venue for Halloween. The streets are full of people dressed as wizards, zombies, and vampires . The store windows are covered with pumpkin lanterns and spider webs, and the air is filled with a festive atmosphere. Salem is a very special town. Its name runs through almost some of the most complex and symbolic chapters in American history . As early as the 17th century, it was one of the earliest Puritan settlements in North America, but in 1692 It was the witch trials of 1949 that made this town remembered worldwide. The Salem Witch Trials can be considered an American version of the “Soul Calling.” A group of Puritans used faith to maintain order in an unfamiliar continent. When faced with uncertainty, disease, and social pressure, they also chose to seek out invisible enemies. Witches became scapegoats. In just a few months, over 200 people were accused and 20 were executed. When social order and power are unstable, heretics become scapegoats. Faced with the unknown, humans tend to use supernatural explanations to digest fear. So , whether it’s the Soul Calling incidents during China’s Qianlong period or the witch hunts in the United States and even around the world, they are not stories about magic or witchcraft, but about how human faith and fear shape society. The pointed one is pretty good. I can wear it everyday, so what ? Haha, it’s quite interesting. Many people wear this kind of hat. Brother, give us this (pin) for free. Your ring is very nice! Thank you and then yeah yeah yeah perfect. Thank you so much, thank you . I just bought it because I didn’t prepare it in advance . Then when he came, look at all this mess. Isn’t this the little bird that urges me to check in every day? Haha, Duo ah? Hahahaha , thump, thump, thump~ It was over in ten minutes. I paid her 15 yuan plus a tip of 20 yuan. 20 yuan. My outfit is now more complete. It’s okay, right? Okay , it’s good. It’s like we’ve traveled back from the witch town in the West to the Huizhou-style house in the East. We ‘re really lucky today because the regular admission ticket we bought actually includes the entrance fee, but you need to make an additional reservation. Yes, and today’s ticket was actually reserved in advance. He was selling Chinese homes. But luckily, the black guy who manages it helped us solve this problem privately . Ah, I’m really lucky today. So everyone, do your homework before coming. You must make an appointment in advance. After you buy the ticket, you must make a separate reservation. Yes, we have now arrived at Yinyutang in Salem , an ancient Huizhou-style house from the Huizhou region of Anhui Province , China. It was originally the ancestral home of the Huang family in the mountain village. After eight generations of residence, it was opened in the 1980s. It had been vacant for 1990s . An American scholar discovered it in 1996 and facilitated the relocation of this typical Huizhou-style wooden brick structure to the other side of the ocean. It was rebuilt and reopened to the Salem Museum in 2003. Walking into the house, you’ll see horse-head walls, a courtyard with water flowing into the hall, 16 bedrooms, and a fish pond with eaves printed on it . Everything feels like Huizhou (slip of the tongue). Life in the mountain village has been frozen in a museum in a small American town . This is both a building and a family history , and a witness to a cultural migration . Look at these bricks and tiles. They are well preserved. Did he say which year this was ? Their house was built in 1997, so what year was his house from? It’s from the Qing Dynasty . It’s well preserved. The Huang family lived there until around 1980, when they moved to the city. The house was left empty in the countryside. After the demolition, they said that they divided the old house into more than 40 containers, disassembled them completely , numbered them, and put them into the containers. After they arrived here, they reassembled them bit by bit according to the numbers. The Boston government paid for it , and a group also paid some money. Then the staff member told me that we originally thought that the materials were all from China , but he said that even some craftsmen came from China together, and then stayed here for a year. Those craftsmen reassembled the work, reassembled it, and rebuilt it. Then those craftsmen went back and they even directly took over the floor tiles. The bricks and stones on the ground , one by one , one tile, one inch, all are authentic Chinese. Even the craftsmen are so amazing. I still admire this. The protection is very good . There is also an abacus and a statue of Chairman Mao. Haha . This is a Qing Dynasty building, which integrates various traces of modern life. Look at these. Why is there Mao Zedong Thought on the bowl ? You can’t see it in China. It’s stuck together . The revolution depends on Mao Zedong Thought. In Yinyu Hall, I saw not only Qing Dynasty carved wooden windows, ancient furniture, but also many other Traces from the 1950s and 1960s, such as Mao Zedong’s portrait, quotations from Chairman Mao, red slogans , and newspapers taped to the walls, actually record a period in the history of the Yinyutang family. This was a time of dramatic social change in China, when Mao Zedong Thought permeated every family and their daily lives. The owner of the old house and his descendants also re-understood the relationship between family and society in that era. In this house, you can see the family mottos of Qing Dynasty merchants, the ancestral tablets in the ancestral hall, and the political slogans of the socialist era. This makes Yinyutang more than just an ancient building , but a time capsule spanning two centuries and two ideologies. These preserved traces have not been deliberately removed because the museum hopes to let visitors see how a real Chinese family experienced the changes of the times from feudalism to the Republic of China and the new China. From ancestor worship to collectivism, from family ethics to national consciousness, all of this is condensed in this house . From time to time , their family comes to visit. And didn’t the old man just tell me that last August, three descendants of the Huang family came to visit again and said, “Oh, you have to put that thing back for me …” 1799 The next day after leaving the witch town of Salem, we arrived in Hartford, the capital of Connecticut . This city is steeped in history and located in central Connecticut, about a two-hour drive from Boston and New York, and only an hour from our camp. Charleston, founded in 1635, is one of the earliest colonial cities in the United States and one of the first places where the U.S. Constitution was drafted, earning it the title of Constitution City. We came here to see a musical version of Les Miserables and explore this ancient and romantic city. There’s a cannon here . We’re now at Hartford’s most iconic landmark, the Connecticut State Capitol, located in the heart of the city. Built in 1878, it’s one of the finest Gothic Revival buildings in the United States. Its most striking feature is the gleaming golden dome. The top is 77 meters high and covered with real gold leaf. This statue commemorates Colonel Thomas Knowles Sigel, a hero of the early days of the American Revolutionary War and also known as the father of American military intelligence. The red brick arch we are looking at now is one of Hartford’s landmarks, the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Arch. It is located in the center of Bushnell Park and was built in 1886 to commemorate the soldiers and sailors from Connecticut who died in the American Civil War. Today we are watching the musical Les Miserables and we see these two large containers. They should be their props and costumes. We are here and are waiting to start watching Les Miserables. Although the seat on the top is not very good , the live impact of the musical is different from the book and the movie. Les Miserables has had a huge impact on me since I was young . This work is currently still touring the United States from time to time. Friends who like it can check the showtimes in advance and check in. Say goodbye to Hugo in the theater and drive 10 minutes to visit another literary giant. The red house in front of you is Mark Twain’s former residence. There is a Lego Mark Twain house at the door. This small red brick castle was built in 1874. It is where Mark Twain and his family lived for 17 years. The adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckabee that we knew when we were children, as well as the Prince and the Pauper, were all created by him here. This castle is not only huge, but the interior decoration and furniture are also very sophisticated, full of Victorian luxury and details, carved wooden walls, stained glass, imported chandeliers, handmade wallpaper, etc. Every corner reflects his pursuit of the taste of life at that time. It is said that the construction and maintenance of this house It cost him a lot of his wealth and also plunged him into financial poverty. We just came out of Mark Twain’s former residence. The interior is really luxurious, especially luxurious. It uses fine wood and has various handicraft collections. Well, he especially loves to buy things, especially loves to buy works of art. There are a lot of furniture from Venice, Italy. He even uses carved leather wallpaper . Haha, luxurious, luxurious, no wonder he went bankrupt in the end. He couldn’t afford to keep this house. He loves to spend money, and he’s not very good at business, right? Haha, okay , let’s go and have dinner. People often say that traveling is to go from a place you are accustomed to to a city that others are tired of. Perhaps
the scenery and journeys we record are not spectacular or special , but when we experience life with a traveler’s mentality, we will still find many moments worth cherishing in ordinary days. Halloween is coming soon. There is a little Easter egg hidden at the end of the video. I wish you a fresh weekend in advance. See you next time.
在 Peabody Essex Museum(皮博迪·埃塞克斯博物馆)里,
