登別温泉の鬼たち Statues of demons in Noboribetsu Onsen
北海道の登別温泉には、なぜ鬼が居るのか。それは温泉街の谷底に観える源泉がグツグツと白い煙を立てて湧いている様子が、鬼の棲む地獄の様である為で、その源泉は「地獄谷」と呼ばれている。さて地獄での鬼の役割と云うと、閻魔大王の元で亡者を責める「獄卒」である。だから当然登別温泉には「閻魔大王」（ここでは紹介していないが）もいる。しかしながら温泉街には、怖いイメージから離れたユニークな「鬼」たちも鎮座している。
Noboribetsu Hot Springs in Hokkaido, Japan is one of Japan’s leading hot spring resorts. You can arrive within 90 minutes from New Chitose Airport. The symbolic character of Noboribetsu Onsen is a Japanese yokai called “Oni”. There are unique “oni” objects everywhere in the hot spring town.
