Hokkaido Northern Trip Part October 2025 Horonobe Town Otonrui Wind Farm Thank you for watching as always We start from Teshio Town, Hokkaido We deviate a little from National Route 232 and arrive at Teshio River Park From here, Rishiri Island looks quite close This park is located on the riverbed at the mouth of the Teshio River, the second longest river in Hokkaido, and the scenery seems to be most beautiful from dusk to just after sunset The Teshio River originates from Mount Teshio and is 256 km long, and it seems to be a park where you can enjoy a variety of outdoor activities such as long canoe trips, camping, and fishing As it is a windy area, the park is lit with lighting that makes maximum use of wind power Travel north on Prefectural Route 106 (Oloron Line) Cross the Teshio River Mouth Bridge Up ahead is Horonobe Town Along the Ron Line (Route 106) is the Otonrui Wind Power Plant, with 28 large wind turbines lined up in a straight line stretching 3.1 km from north to south. The Otonrui Wind Power Plant is scheduled for replacement, and was originally scheduled to shut down at the end of March 2023, but it has been announced that the shutdown will be extended until March 2027. We may only be able to see the Otonrui Wind Power Plant’s wind turbines in their current form for another year or two. Each turbine has a generating capacity of 750 kW, with a maximum output of 21,000 kW (750 kW x 28 units) The annual power generation is said to be equivalent to the electricity consumed by approximately 12,000 average households in a year. A straight road, typical of Hokkaido, continues on. One theory is that the name “Otonrui” comes from the Ainu language “Ota-un-rui (road on the beach).” We have come just before the windmills. From this point on, you can see Mount Rishiri (Rishiri Fuji) and the windmills together. The road is straight and the view is wide, but you need to be careful when driving. After this, watch out for deer crossing the road from left to right! The Otonrui Wind Farm is located in the Sarobetsu Genya, and the surrounding area is filled with vast pastures, wilderness, and sand dunes.The natural environment is ideal for wild animals, including Ezo deer, and it is said that there is a relatively high chance of animals crossing the road.We recommend driving in northern Hokkaido, where people and nature coexist side by side , and enjoying the spectacular scenery at a moderate speed.The Sarobetsu Genya is a vast marsh and wilderness area that stretches along the coastline of Toyotomi Town and Horonobe Town, covering an area of 6,000 hectares.A boardwalk has been constructed around the Sarobetsu Marsh Center, which is about 1 km long, and from spring to autumn you can enjoy close-up views of various marsh plants and wild birds.We will not be stopping by the Sarobetsu Marsh Center on this drive, but why not stop by if you are visiting? The shadows of the rotating windmill blades are reflected on the road. Sarobetsu Genya Parking Park. Continuing north, we reach 45 degrees north latitude. This is roughly the midpoint of the Northern Hemisphere. A metal monument marking the “Tilted N” is located on the side of the road, and there is a parking area large enough for 2-3 cars. Continuing north, we come to Hamasato Parking Shelter. This 140m-long emergency evacuation facility is set up in areas prone to blizzards and snowdrifts.
