【日本最長の夜行列車】”サンライズ出雲”最上級個室「シングルデラックス」で過ごす12時間のひとり旅 | 老朽化で2028年引退噂のレトロ寝台特急で東京へ
A 12-hour overnight train ride aboard the Sunrise Izumo. We bring you a quiet solo journey on a rainy day. This time, I’m heading to Tokyo aboard the Sunrise Izumo. Fortunately, a cancellation opened up today, so I was able to get a reservation. Since it’s a long trip, I did a little shopping before departure. A local bento from Izumo ♩ I don’t usually drink, but I’ll buy some. What’s “Bara Pan”? Discovering new things in unfamiliar places is always interesting. “Fortune Cookie” inspired by Izumo Grand Shrine Seems like good luck. Sleeper express trains once ran 76 times a day at their peak. Now, only two sleeper express trains run daily: the “Sunrise Izumo” and the “Sunrise Seto”. They have become a rare sight today. Unfortunately, it’s raining today. Maybe the rain caused some cancellations. Our destination is the metropolis of Tokyo, 953.6 km away. No official retirement announcement has been made yet, but the aging Sunrise Izumo trains are rumored to retire around 2028. Approximately 30 years since operations began in 1998. Currently, it continues operating somehow, despite repeated suspensions. This time, the room is the top-tier single-occupancy private room, the “Single Deluxe”. For today only, this place is my secret base. 18:57 Sunrise Izumo departs Izumo Station. Japan’s longest-distance limited express The journey on the Sunrise Izumo has begun. While inside the train, the Single Deluxe cabin feels like a small business hotel. The room features not only a bed, but also a desk and table. To prevent items from falling, the hanger hooks are loop-shaped. Additionally, the air conditioning vents can be adjusted horizontally. Below the air conditioner are the night light switch and a reading lamp. Since this is a smoking room, there is also an ashtray. There’s even a shaver outlet and a washbasin. Next to the bed are switches to adjust the lighting and heating/cooling. The Deluxe Room also comes with a full set of amenities. You can wear unisex yukata robes. And souvenir amenity goods. Wow, so many! Deluxe Room guests receive a shower card, so you don’t have to wait in line to purchase one. You even get the soap container. After catching our breath, we head out to explore the train. The private room doors have push-button combination locks. There seem to be fewer passengers today. On the Sunrise, there are shared lounges in cars 3 and 10. Just looking out the window gives you that feeling of traveling. All seats face the window and are counter-style. Looks like we’ll have the place almost to ourselves today. Totally unrelated, but the conductor’s voice is really cool. Sunrise Express Solo Solo offers the most affordable private sleeping compartment option. While the price is low, the rooms are somewhat compact and come in two types: upper berth and lower berth. The upper berth has a larger window, so it’s recommended. This is the Sunrise Single cabin. Vacant rooms have their doors open and lights left on. The “Single Twin” is the only room on the Sunrise with bunk beds. You can enjoy both the upper and lower beds, so it’s my personal favorite. The Sunrise’s most affordable class, the shared space “Nobinobi Seat”. The “Nobinobi Seat” allows boarding without paying a sleeper car fee. While there’s no privacy, it’s a special space worth experiencing at least once. The interior is complex, like a maze. The corridor with single rooms is double-decker. When I first rode the Sunrise, I thought the lower level was a special passageway, but you can actually walk around freely. All cabins share restrooms, with some being wheelchair accessible. Sinks and showers are shared, creating a capsule hotel-like style. I’ve arrived at the shower room. No one is using it right now, so I’ll go in a bit early. Shower rooms are usually crowded, but Single Deluxe rooms have their own private shower room. The interior is very simple. For Single Deluxe rooms, shower time is 30 minutes. Guests staying in rooms other than Single Deluxe must purchase a shower card from the onboard ticket machine. The usage method is extremely simple. Insert the shower card into the dedicated machine. The shower room is also quite compact. Shampoo and body soap are provided. The train rocks while you’re washing, so be careful not to slip and fall. Sitting down to wash might actually be safer. There’s a hair dryer, but the airflow is a bit weak. There are various inconveniences, but that’s part of the fun. Finally, pressing the shower button automatically cleans the room. I was surprised by this cleaning at first, but I’m used to it now. I’ll spend the rest of the time in my room. It’s a peaceful train journey today. Disposable plastic cups are provided on the table. I can’t possibly drink all the sake, so just a little today. The cap makes it easy to carry around. I’ll be going back to my parents’ house soon, so I’ll give this to my dad as a present. A local ekiben (station bento) you can buy at the convenience store. Opening it up, it was chirashi sushi. Sushi tastes good even when cold, making it perfect for travel. I really love how it’s efficient to eat while moving, not just sitting still. During travel, you can spend your time however you like. Snack time: “Fortune Cookie” They come in packs of seven, and apparently one of them is a big win—a “Great Fortune” fortune. The packaging is shaped like an ema votive tablet—so cute. So you get to enjoy seven fortunes, right? So, how’s today’s fortune? Ah, it’s “Moderately Lucky.” “Marriage” depends on timing… I see. The train is currently passing through the Hakubi Line between Shimane and Okayama. Traveling at a leisurely speed of about 60km/h. While trips that get you to your destination quickly are nice, a slower, more relaxed pace feels more reassuring. The train shakes a bit while running on the Hakubi Line. Some people might feel a little queasy, so taking motion sickness medicine beforehand is a good idea. We’ve left the Hakubi Line and entered the Sanyo Main Line. At Okayama Station, the Sunrise Izumo and Seto Line trains will be coupled together. The coupling process takes a mere 3 minutes. After coupling with the Sunrise Seto, it becomes a 14-car formation heading together for Tokyo. Departure follows immediately after coupling. It’s quite a tight schedule. You can walk through the connected section inside the train. Passing through here brings you into the Sunrise Seto area. This is the connecting section. Both the Sunrise Seto and the Sunrise Izumo have nearly identical cabin facilities and atmosphere. But I like this part because it has a bit of a secret base feel to it. The Single Deluxe bed measures approximately 195cm in length and 85cm in width. Compared to other cabins, it’s designed with extra width. The height is about 188cm at its highest point. It’s a bit narrower than a business hotel, but it’s more than spacious enough for a capsule hotel. It’s a smoking room, but smoking while lying down is prohibited. The outside is completely visible, but you can close the shutter. So, it’s about time to sleep. Well then, good night… Couldn’t fall asleep right away, so I opened the window. Even at night, opening the curtains lets in quite a bit of light. Good morning. It’s still dim out, but everyone’s up early. Breakfast is the Izumo bread and milk I bought yesterday. Rose Bread was developed 76 years ago by a baker who wanted to create “bread as beautiful as a rose.” Remarkably, everything is made by hand, so only about 2,000 loaves are produced each day. When it comes to bread accompaniments, milk is a must. Milk pairs incredibly well with sweet bread. Delicious. It’s surprising that the rose bread shape is rolled by the artisan’s hands. The taste is delicious too, so I recommend it. The scenery outside gradually changes to an urban landscape. 7:08am Arrival at Tokyo Station. The Sunrise, Japan’s only scheduled overnight train. With no successor planned, this may be the last sight of a scheduled overnight train. It’s truly sad to think that a train running almost daily will suddenly disappear. Its operating period may not be long either. Please experience this special journey while you still can. Thank you for watching until the end.

Thank you once again for taking us along on such a lovely train journey.
Those walkways on the train are not made for an obese person.
How many miles have you traveled in 20 minutes or was it longer? ❤
Really sad to heard Sunrise express may retried soon. Night train are cool things save me from booking hotel if I plan for 3 days trip.
(In our country currently have lot of night train service from newer night train made in China to cheap 2nd class without a/c using since 1970. Some night train have 3rd class)
