[Music] We’re here today in Conway Springs, Kansas, about 30 miles south of Witchaw, not too far from Oklahoma. And I’m sitting here in the downtown main street right here by city hall and not too busy today. It’s a Sunday and a lot of times in these towns about this size, everything’s closed. especially on a Sunday, you know, morning, people going to church or definitely, you know, just things aren’t open on Sundays. Uh so it’ll be a quite quiet little stroll through the main street. So let’s do that now and learn about the history of Conway Springs and then we’ll check out what the rest of the town has to offer. Got this fantastic Wizard of Oz mural right there as we check out downtown Conway Springs. So, we’re in Sumar County and Sumar County borders Oklahoma to the south. Conway Springs is in the northeast section of Sumar County. It’s about 25 miles north of Oklahoma. Conway Springs was built on the crown of a prairie just southeast of Slate Creek. Cowboys would pass through this area to water their cows in the creek in route to Witchah, Abalene, and Kansas City. Homesteaders started coming to the area in the 1870s. Herm Cranmer was one of the first well-known town founders. He built the first home in what would become the town of Conway Springs. He discovered Seven Springs now in located in the town park area which we’re going to go to at the end of the video. He popularized the area by advertising it as Cranmer Mineral Springs, a health resort that claims the mineral water had health benefits. People from all over the country came to Conway Springs to bathe and drink the waters. The original town site was established in the early 1880s, located just west of the park and was named Northfield. Then when the railroad was surveyed in 1883, local residents decided to move the main part of town east to line up with the railroad. Post office opened in 1884 as Northfield, but then changed to Conway Springs. Later that year, they renamed the town Conway Springs after the town of Conway, New Hampshire, and American writer Monure Conway. Conway Springs became a key settlement due to its location on the Missouri Pacific and the Aes, Topeka, and Santa Fe railroads. Man named Harvey Nininger was born in Conway Springs. He revived interest in scientific study of meteorites in the 1930s and assembled the largest personal collection of meteorites up to that time. Nineer founded the American Meteorite Museum which was located in Arizona. When you start looking at the population figures, you can see it was pretty small at the beginning when it was founded in the 1880s, 1890s and then grew all the way till 1910 at 1292. then started a downward trend for several decades, bottoming out at 816 1950, but then back up again, topping out at 1,384 in 1990, and then now it’s on a decline for the second time down to 1,086 today. Hopefully, it’ll go back up like it did earlier in its life. [Music] [Music] We made it over to the city park, the Conway Springs City Park. And this is the springs where it got its name. This was some medicinal springs that people would come and visit. And if you ever wondered why Conway Springs had the springs part of it, this would be it. and uh it’s a national landmark. It’s on the register of historic places here in the park. There’s some other things here like a the uh train and they have a nice little type out outdoor uh place to play music or concerts and they may have a death goround sitting over there. But uh nice nice park to end our day. Conway Springs pretty interesting town. I’ve been through here before but never really explored it. And it’s it feels like just a real nice community. It’s you know got thousand people getting a little bit smaller. Looks like it has a lot of you know pride in the school district and generally there’s not a lot of abandoned things. There’s a few older things, older buildings in the downtown area, but nothing that’s really unkempt. So nice area to visit. A nice town and definitely glad I paid a visit to Conway Springs. [Music] You guys are awesome. You guys are great. You keep on adding to Mr. Snake. We could just stop and say we’re done, but really then we’d lose the fun. So, let’s keep him growing, adding rocks each day. Well, let’s check out the rocks of Mr. Snake. Some wood there. That rock. Dang, it’s a heck of a snake. Cool. Welcome to Conway. Hi there. Take three. Okay. Conway Springs. Let’s see what you got. It looks like it maybe used to be red painted over blue or maybe used to be a couple different colors. There’s some yellow in there, too. It’s on a little bit of a angle. It’s easy to spin. It’s kind of light. Pretty good. Although, it’s starting to slow down already. So, maybe it could use some oil in there. Some good. Could spin a little better. I’m going to give it a seven.

  1. You peeked my interest, so I looked up on my phone to see if I could figure out which town you were showing today. I came up with several towns in Southern Kansas with the name Springs. And I tried to decide which one but gave up and find out for sure. And Conway Springs was one of the several listed. A very nice little town. I enjoyed the visit. Several good looking churches and school. Looks like the spring needed some cleaning up, at least the steps. As usual the drone shots were fantastic. The sport arena looked to be in great shape. Seemed to be plenty of grain elevators too. The stone snake was cool but where was it's head? 😊. Thank you for the trip to a cool small town. Happy trails to you and God bless.

  2. In the 70's and 80's (and many years before that) Pepsi ICT bottled water from Conway. I hauled hundreds of water loads to Pepsi…..we first had a 1700 gallon truck….it was $1.85 for 1700 gallons. Then, We bought a 3400 gallon tanker that cost $ 4.15 to fill.

  3. Driven through this town many times but never stopped. I really liked this video. I love the history of these small towns in Kansas. I enjoy this channel too. Thanks.

  4. I always look at real estate listings after I watch these videos to get a feel for the town. There is only one house for sale here and it has caved in ceilings. It's pretty much impossible for these kinds of towns to grow because there is no housing.

  5. It's got a pool and all of its schools, and the grain elevators are still served by the railroad. Looks clean and tidy everywhere. Good to see this little town is doing a lot better than many other prairie towns of this size.

  6. I spent a year there one day as a teenager in the 80's. It looks nicer than my hazy memory of it now, especially with the Stock Tank bar. I had to run that through the Googles. Looks like a fun place.

  7. That was a great little town i did like the Acoustic Shell in the park. Although the springs were a a bit creepy and 5 churches in a town of a 1000! We have a town of 13,000 with 1 chapel that gets 30 people on a Sunday.

  8. You should check out Hope Kansas my parents moved there after many years in Colorado until they both passed not a lot there it might even be a ghost town by now 😊

  9. Conway springs has a great high school football team! The coach is from my hometown 👍🏻

  10. Hired Man's Grocery is a great little grocery store with a good selection of hot food at the deli, and the Stock Tank bar has a great breakfast buffet on Sunday.

  11. Well kept small town. Much better kept than the oil boom town I grew up in. There is a drone video on YouTube over the downtown area. The roofs of all except two of the remaining old buildings have fallen in. This town seems to have all it's downtown roofs intact.
