I’m at Miyanosaka Station. This time we will visit Setagaya Castle Ruins from here. Let’s check the route on the map. This is Miyanosaka Station, where you are currently located. And the destination is Setagaya Castle Ruins. Setagaya Castle Ruins Park is about a 5-minute on foot from the station. Before that, I will first visit Gotokuji Temple. Gotokuji Temple is where the main enclosure of Setagaya Castle was. After seeing the castle ruins, we will also visit the Setagaya Magistrate’s Residence to the south, the Hasegawa Machiko Memorial Museum, and the art museum. Let’s go straight away. We arrived at Gotokuji Temple. Gotokuji is a temple of the Soto sect. In the early Edo period, Setagaya became the domain of the Ii clan of the Hikone domain. Kotokuin, built in the 15th century, became the Edo family temple of the Ii family. Later, it was renamed Gotokuji Temple after Ii Naotaka’s Buddhist name. 【Temple Gate】 【Buddhist temple】 【Three-story pagoda】 【Temple bell】 Gotokuji Temple is known for its beckoning cats. 【Shofukuden】 A typical beckoning cat has a small coin, but this cat doesn’t have any. Does it mean that it brings good luck rather than money luck? The “Hikonyan” was created with the motif of this beckoning cat and the “Akazonae”. I also bought a size 3 lucky cat for 1,000 yen. Moved to Setagaya Castle RuinsPark. Setagaya Castle was built by the Oshu Kira clan in the mid-14th century. Speaking of the Kira clan, Kira Kozukenosuke from “Chushingura” is famous, but since he is the Mikawa Kira clan, their lineage is different. Setagaya Castle functioned as the residence of the Kira clan for generations, but in 1590 it was requisitioned during Hideyoshi’s conquest of Odawara, and it was later abandoned. You can see the remains of enclosures, earthworks, and moats. Let’s climb up on the earthwork. You can see the remains of the moat below. Let’s go down. It looks like a moat that separates the east and west enclosuress. When viewed from below, it looks like Horikiri. Move to the west encosure. This is the ruins of enclosure on the west side.
