Afghanistan a country the world only remembers for one word these men were originally armed by the United States were once heroes for ousting the soviet invaders the Taliban for decades that name has defined everything outsiders think they know about this place but beyond the headlines there are over 40 million people living quietly under their rule working raising families dreaming of normal lives these are the voices the world never hears because here politics isn’t something you casually talk about especially with a foreigner so most people stay careful guarded but when trust is built and the walls come down you begin to hear what life here is really like this is Afghanistan beyond the conflict if you ever want to travel around Afghanistan the way we did you can do it with Mehr Tours they helped us make this journey possible through their genuine hospitality and uplifting spirit our tour in Afghanistan with the travel agency that we were traveling with has now ended and we decided to actually stay a few days extra because we wanted to see some more of Kabul and I was thinking that often when I travel I use couchsurfing which is an app where you can log on and then you can find someone to stay in their house for free with and then you become friends with this person and actually I discovered that in Afghanistan this is illegal like ever since the Taliban is in power they made it illegal to stay in people’s houses however I still wanted to try it and I uh looked around and I got very lucky because we have found someone who allowed us to stay in their house and he’s gonna come and pick us up now at the hotel hello hey hi how are you hello hi nice to meet you what’s your name? Farhad nice to meet you nice to meet you too how long have you been living in Kabul in Kabul it’s about 21 years it’s a very boring city always traffic always dust always pollution oh what a chaos because of Independence Day of Taliban on August 15 2021 Taliban forces entered Kabul leading to the collapse of the previous government they call this day Victory Day but for many Afghans it’s not a Celebration it’s a reminder of the fear that still lingers from their previous rule in 1996 when the Taliban persecuted minorities silenced dissent and imposed their extreme interpretation of Islam do you think that most people in the country go and celebrate that too no they are just it’s the only reason that people have this chance to enjoy something because of this all people are joining them it’s not because people love Taliban or like Taliban no are you Shia or Sunni Muslim I’m Shia and most people in Afghanistan are Sunni yeah mostly there’s a checkpoint there’s a checkpoint okay should I stop filming yeah for just for a while the checkpoints are one of the most dangerous places to film in Afghanistan the fact that we were filming while talking to a local about politics made it even worse something strictly banned when foreigners are involved a single wrong word or movement could have drawn serious attention where do we go up here to see the view of Kabul wow wow this is a very beautiful viewpoint make sure that you don’t fall down here it’s very beautiful would you want to always live in Kabul or would if you would have the option would you want to live somewhere else I want to live other places my favourite place for living is Manhattan New York why would you want to live in the States like America is the main part of power nowadays I mean that’s I wanna have a strong passport not like Afghan passport with Afghanistan passport I cannot go even one country oh it’s a very dark alley here he said there’s a blackout Assalamualaikum hello assalamualaikum hello how are you good how are you fine thank you nice to meet you what a nice room it’s a guest house it’s as big as my whole house in Amsterdam where did that all of a sudden came from this is a real gun I’ve never touched such a big gun really? no we don’t have guns is it full? no it’s not did you ever use this? yeah my brother used it in the the house the house where do you use this just for thieves it’s quite heavy where did did you just buy this in a store somewhere or yeah you can just buy it it was illegal in previous government legal everything is possible in Afghanistan to buy with money the only impossible thing is this that you cannot stay alive until the end of your life definitely if you’re a thief in this house what do you want to have before dinner what do you recommend? some chai, coffee thank you so much as tourists we often feel a kind of immunity from the way the Taliban treat locals still at checkpoints that line can blur wearing traditional clothing sometimes made them think we were Afghan and in those moments their attitude could change fast but the mood would shift again the instant they realized we were foreigners is it very different? how the taliban perceives us for example you have a guide you’re in car and he’s going for a making an entry in every province and every city Afghan people are the only people that they hate America but that their dream is to visit once America all terrorists are made of USA Al Qaeda Daesh jayeshullah everything idf it’s policy it’s policy from the time before when there was a different government parties parties happiness music we don’t have music because of Taliban if they capture us with music they will arrest us we cannot go with our family never anywhere because ladies are not allowed to go to picnics they define Islam like this but Islam is not like this it’s local food what is this this is rice and milk what do you think? 10 out 10 perfect right the hospitality from Farhad really
doesn’t end because after this amazing meal we also got this room where we can sleep now so I think we’re gonna have a good sleep here see you in the morning good morning we woke up and we already got like an amazing breakfast here in the middle of our room so normally we’re going to the Panjshir Valley but it’s not allowed from the Taliban for foreigners to go there because they said there’s many Tajik people living there so now we’re going to wardakh province it’s interesting that really everyone here in the street is wearing the traditional clothing like before before 2021 people would also wear western clothing sometimes but now really everyone is wearing traditional I see like so many cars here have faded off number plates or they just don’t even have a number plate at all I wonder if they have a traffic control here in the country we’re heading to Wardak province home to both Hazara and Tajik people the Tajiks have a long history of resisting Taliban rule which makes travelling through their areas possible only with a Taliban escort the Hazaras meanwhile still carry deep mistrust memories of persecution that never really faded under Taliban rule that fear has returned both the Hazaras and the Tajiks are seen as enemies the Hazaras for their faith the Tajiks for their resistance to the Taliban they represent Defiance difference everything that challenges their control and because of that their villages their voices their very identity are slowly being erased from the map that’s the first time that I hear some music is this Hazara music yeah oh nice so most of the people that live here they’re Hazara yeah you’re also Hazara yeah how do the most of the Hazara people feel about the Taliban so so they don’t like they don’t hate there’s quite a big mosque over there in this small village wow so many fruit trees Sanglakh valley do you want apple? yep make sure you don’t fall down ok thank you it’s so sweet people are just visiting Bamyan and Mazar e sharif, Herat, Kabul this but they don’t visit these areas hmm most tourists don’t come here yeah oh that’s a shame because it’s so beautiful what is that? hmm this is good can I have! let me have some let me have some! no, no I will bring I will bring more more are Hazara like the oldest people that live in Afghanistan the evidence sounds like that Hazara people were Buddhist because of that Buddha we are saying that Hazara people are the oldest nation around Afghanistan just Afghanistan between tajik and pashtun people the Hazara are one of Afghanistan’s most distinctive and resilient communities they speak Hazaragi a dialect of Dari and most follow the Shia branch of Islam making them a religious minority in a largely Sunni country they’ve shaped the country’s culture through poetry storytelling music and education leaving a deep Mark on Afghanistan’s identity but their history is also one of suffering in the late 1800s during the rule of Amir Abdul Rahman Khan the Hazaras faced brutal campaigns of massacre and enslavement historians estimate that more than half of their population was killed or displaced between 1888 and 1893 that persecution didn’t end there under the Taliban’s first rule the Hazara were again targeted most notoriously in 1998 in Mazari Sharif when thousands were massacred in a single week and even today under Taliban rule the fear remains since 2021 Hazaras have faced renewed threats discrimination exclusion from public life land seizures and deadly attacks on schools and mosques their Shia faith makes them targets in extremist eyes and their communities live under constant uncertainty yet despite all of this the Hazaras endure hey there I saw your friend there take a picture of me he didn’t take any camera is not allowed to film women taliban restricts it and my husband is taliban I didn’t film her I was filming I was zoomed in on the people in the back where there’s no woman they’re the wife of the Taliban yeah she’s saying that my husband is Talib if you don’t delete my photo I will yeah it’s definitely illegal to film women here so the people from the village they come here to shower is it drinkable oh yeah wow just tastes like bottled water do you live here? yes and you’re a Hazara Hazara sayid what is sayid they’re the offspring of Prophet Muhammad how do most people that live here look at the Taliban now they’re good because it’s peaceful everywhere is good everything is good they’re saying that we have a spy here how was it like before to live here like a couple of years ago in previous government everything was okay but this area was not peaceful in a way are there certain things that you miss from before freedom for freedom freedom in general all freedom all freedom because now women can’t go to school or picnics how do people here look at foreigners that are visiting what do you feel like tourists that come here they don’t come here so you’ve never seen tourists here before no what do you like most about your country? the water, the nature and also peace do areas like this receive international aid because I saw some cars from like UN on the way rarely rarely where does it mostly mostly go then it’s according to government how they survey it goes to the government and they distribute it and mostly between Pashtun people not Hazara people because each nation loves their nation Taliban loves Pashtun people so the Taliban keep the aid for themselves then yeah absolutely you can see that he’s a professional taxi driver yeah these sheep are on the way
and we can’t pass go go go this region of the country used to before be a lot more dangerous just a few years ago uh it’s happened sometimes that foreign travelers or tourists from in the country when they pass this region that the Taliban would catch them and cut off their head because they would think that uh they’re allies of the Americans in the past the Taliban used intimidation and violence to consolidate control across Afghanistan villages were targeted and residents were often accused of spying or collaborating with foreign forces 8 workers journalists and teachers faced arrests threats and killings under accusations of spreading western influence since returning to power in 2021 the group’s tactics have evolved while large scale attacks are less common the Taliban now exercise control through surveillance censorship and economic pressure their focus has shifted from open warfare to maintaining authority through administrative and social control so later we’re gonna picnic in this region and we’re getting some food to eat here oh they’re making it in the oven there yeah wow oh this bakery it smells so good here they’re just pulling the bread right out of the oven there I think they’re looking for a place to have our picnic are you also Hazara and shia? yeah wow look at this this is the perfect picnic spot it’s already entirely made no this is good yeah you can also swim here perfect oh this is very comfortable this is definitely the best picnic spot we could have found is that rude? it means to come here please how much how much he is saying that it’s 80 afghanis you can keep it it’s good what is he doing now he will put it near to in the river in the river okay okay thanks yes oh they got okra that’s one of my favourite vegetables the people that live here also use the river to shower at the same time so while we’re eating here they’re showering do you think that most people would think that Achraf and me are local Achraf yeah Achraf yes but you so so rarely so so more like a Tajik more like tajik yeah thanks this smells very good yeah it does approved pure national Ayran I love sour Ayran do you still have memories from the war or were you too young I’m too young beacuse it was like what, four years ago or something from previous government? no I mean like when America was here America was here no I remember but there was no big battle just in some villages how was that when they left they left accidentally in one day they left Afghanistan how did people respond then nothing the people were just afraid of Taliban yeah I saw these videos on the internet of like people that were running to the airport and that they were trying to like hanging on hanging into the planes and falling to their death but that was one option for getting out of Afghanistan many people left without passport without visa they just went to the neighbouring countries no they went to America to America without any passport without any visa they’re discussing which country has the best marijuana if it’s either Morocco or Afghanistan I wanna hear arguments but I’m saying Afghanistan and he is trying to say Morocco I’m saying Morocco and everyone knows that it’s Morocco no no where do people even get that here totally it’s normal between Afghan people you have to know people mostly pashtun people and tajik people the goats are stealing our food these goats are so weird they have like a Brazilian butt lift found another great spot but this time for watermelon Bellissimo for you thank you welcome cheers cheers I think our taxi driver is tired and now Achraf is going to drive I don’t have an international license don’t speed too much I’m going fine I think the taxi driver likes his music this is the first time ever that I’m in a taxi where the taxi driver offers for us to drive Achraf really is a speed devil so I need a stress cigarette but at least our driver is enjoying it I don’t think there’s a listen to a lot of music here it’s a very interesting contrast because so normally music is uh forbidden here and now we’re playing all this uh music and the taxi driver is loving it I’ve only driven two places in my life and that’s Morocco and Afghanistan when we returned to Kabul we went to Kabul’s famous bird market rows of cages the sound of hundreds of wings birds are deeply woven into Afghan culture a reflection of the country’s love for melody look how big that chicken is wow that really is a Dinosaur they’re trying to start a fight between the two cocks to have a fight here I think this is what they in Dutch call patres but I have no idea what they call it in English it’s not only birds they have they also have rabbits I used to have a rabbit exactly like this like albino with red eyes but then he died because the teeth kept on growing and the teeth grew into his skull here you can see the market from above you can see here the difference between like the newly built houses here and then the old houses that are remaining on this side might be like more than 100 years old what bird is this I’ve never seen something like this when I was a little kid I used to have a small canary too in the house which is called peep very original and one day it flew away and then we went on a vacation and then when we came back from the vacation it was back in the garden and then my dad threw a towel over it and we catch it again and then we just had it again it just came back after the bird market we went to a nearby bazaar to try some street food it’s one of the busiest spots in the area and a good place to see daily life in Kabul up close it’s not that sour it’s sweet yeah it’s sweet very good this whole market is alongside this dried out river here and it just uh you cannot get past here there’s so many cars there’s so many people it’s one big chaos hello how are you good how are you? what is your name? Jonathan what’s your name my name is Baitullah is he chinese? no! he is asking did you come from China? oh no no no no Belgium OK let’s try some Bolani I want this thanks it has potato inside and it’s fried and you eat it with this sour um tomato sauce this is mostly eaten with um this Ayran, it’s not called Ayran but it’s like Ayran there’s one thing that makes vlogging in Afghanistan so difficult which is that you cannot film women so the whole time while I’m filming I have to always like look around if there’s no women in the shot because that could cause a lot of problems people often comment on videos from Afghanistan asking why they never see women but it’s not because they aren’t here it is because under Taliban rule filming or photographing women is forbidden if the camera is purposefully pointed at them it can cause serious trouble both for the person filming and for her so most of the time the camera has to look away it smells so good already hmm very nice chicken and vegetable mix there’s chickpeas in there too if you’re traveling here in Afghanistan on a budget you can just always eat street food and it’s so cheap and it’s amazing first time trying street food good amazing yeah right you get your own now top 10 soups I’ve ever had same to Morocco or no different better than Moroccan food or worse than Moroccan food better… different yes wow that’s a politically correct answer that is still quite good I would say accept Afghanistan is better than Morocco I never said that does the soup have a name no, soup just soup? soup chicken soup maybe chicken soup maybe 10 out of 10 10 out of 10 walk away and now I have to pay 10 out of 10 they have two kinds of foods one of pee one of pee? not that pee pea and also they have mantu oh I’d like some Mantou ah no Mantu why is the mantu always gone let’s try this what is this called they are salted I think with a potato and then some green sauce which is I think it’s a sambal sambal there’s a lot of things going on at the same time it’s salty it’s also a bit sweet and it’s sour all at the same time he’s asking who you are who am I you should always tell them that we’re famous football players what’s your YouTube channel name ah you want one we always get some new followers on the market welcome thanks he was in Turkey and he told me that you are I thought that you were Turkish here we go again oh wow this is very good cheers cheers from Afghanistan if you have to work here the whole day and you have to hear this sound the whole day you’ll be going crazy I’ve been growing this beard now for quite a while to blend it into the country but we’re almost leaving the country so it’s time now to go to the barber however in Afghanistan it’s not entirely allowed to shave off your whole beard under Taliban rule beard shaving in Afghanistan can result in severe punishment barbers risk having their shops closed and men can even face detention for violating beard laws the beard signals manhood and obedience to religious and cultural expectations not having one can raise suspicion or worse historically in parts of Afghan culture masculinity and age have also been tied to the presence of a beard and it is most visible in the concept of the Bacha Bacha Bazi literally meaning boy play refers to powerful men exploiting young beardless adolescent boys as entertainers and often sexual companions not having a beard according to this concept strips them from their manhood so even something as simple as facial hair carries weight here they have a barber in the street which is the oldest way to get a shave assalamualaikum waalaikumsalam for a trim very personal he said it will cost a lot is it allowed to shave the whole beard off no it isn’t what does it mean for you to have a full beard you get to look very pretty thank you if I would shave off the whole beard would they look different at me It’s Afghanistan, you have to abide by the rules oh wow oh with a car window perfect that’s a lot cleaner thanks I don’t know what to do oh bye bye how much whatever you’d like to give you can have it all no need if you want this you can still take it back no thanks that looks a lot better right yeah nice I didn’t know what to do there sometimes you have these moments when you just do not know how to greet someone and he put his arms around me and i thought he wanted to give me a hug and even I was like awwwww I see so many people always on the market that are uh having injuries and stuff like that or miss a leg is that something from the war mostly war and also explosions in previous government he is asking how are you doing good go grandma go but now I should then do this that they like fly away I’ll throw them at you then they all come at you come my sons and now you have to walk through them like this it’s a big contrast here you have the Palestinian flag and then you have like liberty and peace from America doesn’t really go well together from the chaos and liveliness of the busy center we headed to a place seemingly stuck in the past shaping Afghan heritage oh wow that’s a big collection of carpets oh my God ha ha ha wow this is nice second tower has been hit I’ll hang this in the hallway of my house is this handmade or with handmade how expensive is this this is 60 bucks maybe I can fit this in my luggage really yeah would be nice something like this I want to hang this on the wall this is made in North Province in Samangan rugs like these are known as war rugs a unique form of Afghan craftsmanship that began during the Soviet invasion in 1979 in provinces like Samangan local artisans started to include images of tanks helicopters and weapons in their designs it was their way of documenting what they saw around them using the only medium they had over time these rocks became a record of decades of conflict from the Soviet era to the years of civil war and the rise of the Taliban each one reflects how ordinary life and war became inseparable in Afghanistan’s recent history even today many of these rocks are still made in the north preserving both a tradition and a timeline of the country’s struggles do you have any old rings for men yes let’s see like this is actually it fits actually good already here show us or actually this one Sheikh Achraf Muhammad al din wait put this wait put this and put this and then Thanos and I just like which one do you think is better this or this definitely this what does it say it has some writing there yeah something is written, quran there’s a hadith about this stone yeah and the hadith is for good luck and also if you have a problem with talking in public this is good for conversation that’s a ring with powers this is a very cool store they have a lot of old things from Afghanistan some of these things are outlawed now so for example the old flag is still laying here like this one if Taliban would see now that I’m holding this then uh maybe they would deport me because this is not allowed anymore in the country yeah beautiful right what’s the name of this instrument Rubab Rubab how old is this? I don’t know maybe 30 35 year ago because it is not allowed by the taliban what is the oldest thing you have this is Turkman Bukhara you know Bukhara yes this is silver completely and this is a little bit of water of gold wow water of gold yeah this is maybe more than hundred year ago that’s a keychain of the CIA coin from the CIA commanded committed to excellence in defense of other nation 1961 how did you acquire this how did you get this people bring it they bring thank you very much thank you and you thank you thank you I hope to see you again thank you I will definitely come back thank you we came to one of the most unique eating place in entire Kabul which is Marhaba restaurant it’s an airplane on top of a building and the restaurant is inside the airplane the airplane is from Kam Air Airlines which is one of the only two airlines of the country oh this is really impressive it’s too old thank you oh wow yeah they put the seats by 4 it’s nice that it’s very cool inside here my god the last time I’ve been in the airplane was 2 months ago so this is refreshing did you bring your mask? that would’ve been a great segway to the ad this video is brought to you by Manta Sleep given the struggle of catching a good sleep while always traveling it can grow to be a challenge until we partnered with Manta Sleep and got to use one of their masks the Manta Sleep Silk Mask it’s a very soft mask with adjustable padded cushions that give no pressure on the eyes it’s 100% pure silk and it blocks out all annoying lights it stays cool and breathable against the skin and it prevents sweat and breakouts if you visit their website then you can find a variety of sleep mask for all preferences like a weighted mask for calming pressure or a cooling mask for no puffiness when you wake up but my personal favorite is the Manta Sound a mask with seamless Bluetooth speakers to play your calming white noise for a comforting sleep check out their website in the description and use the code Absurdist sleep for a 10% discount on all their products is this actually something to put in oh wow you just put in the the sauces I wasn’t expecting that this was actually once an a real airplane sometimes they make them fake yeah thank you what was your favorite part of Afghanistan that’s such a hard question I don’t know from all this trip it’s like so many things that I just like experienced that I did not expect that will be happening in Afghanistan at all but like my favorite part would definitely be like just how nice the people are yeah I think so too because like everyone is just like nice and like even if we play music when we’re not supposed to like people are dancing to it in the street because they hear it and it’s like people are always like oh I invite you to my home do you want chai do you want this can I how can I help you how can I bend backwards for you like yeah it’s always trying to help you to the utmost yeah I definitely think that what people say about Afghanistan in the media is very different and also the rules and all and the strictness of the country does not translate to how people act towards you it’s definitely worth it in Afghanistan everyone has something to say about the Taliban just not everyone can most speak through silence through how they live not what they say and in that silence you find the real story of this country quiet resilient and still standing over these past weeks I discovered far more than I ever expected a country full of history culture and warmth from its food to its traditions and the endless hospitality of its people Afghanistan proved to be so much more than its headlines it’s a place worth seeing worth understanding and above all worth remembering

In this documentary, I travel to Kabul to ask ordinary Afghans what they think about life under the Taliban. From street vendors and students to families and Hazara communities in the mountains of Sanglakh, I wanted to hear directly from the people themselves — not filtered through headlines.
We visit the chaotic bird market, have dinner in a restaurant built inside an airplane, join a Taliban parade, and share a picnic with locals while learning about Afghan traditions, hospitality, and everyday struggles.
This video offers a rare, unfiltered glimpse into what it’s really like to live in Afghanistan today — through the voices of those who call it home.

The video perfect 👌
In a nation where even filming the women can cause trouble , and I don't think the men have any right to describe the nation and its government
But still , kuddos to the men who still chose to speak out
I hope Taliban doesn't find this because tour guide might get in trouble. But it was a great video 👍
Please stop lies so much u making yourself stupid 😂
اقوام بدل از هر قوم ونژاد وزبان غرب پرست دشمن دین و اسلام ووطن فروش 😂
The Hazara guy give false information about Afghanistan sham on you and you foreigners don’t spread negativity among the Afghans be as guest and stay like guest respect the country law the Hazara and Tajik war lords did so much bad stuff to Afghanistan and they are kick out for good that’s the reason some Hazara and Tajik still want continue the hostility and talking bad about Afghan Nation
From my imagination, You Jonathan, are living in a great movie!
I’m enjoying your videos and your positive experience in Afghanistan 🇦🇫 ❤❤ ❤
propaganda video he lied 90%
Everything this Hazara kid said was a lie. During the civil wars, the worst and cruelest people were the Hazara people. They hammered nails into people's heads, performed the dance of the dead, cut off women's breasts, and committed thousands of war crimes. They pretend to be very philanthropic and humanitarian. Even if they are in power, they still don't know humanity or humanity.
