The Cat Train runs through the residential area. This is Japan’s commuter train! Hello! This is Ikoma Station in Nara. I’ve come to ride the Cat Train. Actually, there’s not only a cat train but also a dog train. It’s about a minute’s walk from Ikoma Station. We’ve arrived at Torii-mae Station. The cat train is called “Mike,” and the dog train is called “Bull.” This station is located at the foot of Mount Ikoma. The Ikoma Cable Line is Japan’s first cable line, operating for over 100 years. It is an important means of transportation for the region. The train is arriving at the station. A giant cat face approaches. This is Mike, the cat train. Mike and Bull are making a total of four round trips per hour. Let’s head to the platform. Eyes and ears flash with the lights. I feel like this train could take me to another world. Cable cars are well-suited for operation on slopes. A steel cable is connected to the vehicle. The winch winds up the cable, and the vehicle moves along the rails. The long cable connects Mike and Bull. The two vehicles are being raised and lowered alternately. Mike departs. Let’s see it off for now. It slowly climbs the mountain slope. After a while, another train is arriving. This is Bull, the dog train. Let’s ride the Bull on the way there. The vehicle is sloped like this. No conductor rides on the train. Mike and Bull are also drawn on the seat. Along this route, there are many historic temples and shrines. Bull departs. Ikoma is a bedroom community for Nara and Osaka. Many houses are also located on the slopes of Mount Ikoma. Many people commute to work or school on this train. Mike and Bull play vital roles. Mike approaches from ahead. As they pass each other, meow meow, woof woof. I love the staging! The train’s background music is “She’ll Be Coming ‘Round the Mountain.” It is known to everyone in Japan by the song title “Picnic.” The train arrived at Hozanji Station in five minutes. Let’s get off. The elevation difference between the two stations is 146 meters. The train will depart shortly. This cable car operates from just after 6:00 a.m. until just before 12:00 p.m. It supports the lives of local residents from morning till night. This is the power room that winds the cable. Now, the Ikoma Cable Line splits into different routes from here. You can reach the summit of Mount Ikoma via this route. There is an amusement park at the top of the mountain. Since we’re already here, let’s go all the way. This route operates twice an hour. Since we have time, let’s visit the small shrine next door. It’s rare to find a shrine inside a station. This is the “Do-Re-Mi” train. Compared to Mike and Bull, it seems more ordinary? Passing the “Sweet” train en route. The train arrived at Ikoma-Sanjo Station after 7 minutes and 2 stops. The round-trip fare is $7 total. Exiting the station, you enter a world of dreams. Mike and Bull are here to greet you too. Free admission. Rides cost $2 to $4 each. This flight tower is Japan’s oldest large-scale amusement ride. During World War II, it was used as a naval anti-aircraft observation post. This retro feel is surprisingly popular. Many tourists from overseas also visit here. With 400,000 visitors annually. You can enjoy spectacular views from the restaurant. “View Lunch” $10. Let’s ride the “Floating Panda.” Mount Ikoma lies on the border between Nara Prefecture and Osaka Prefecture. This is the Nara Basin. And the Osaka Plain. That was a pleasant aerial stroll. Now let’s head back. Mike and Bull are waiting. The park closes at 5:00 p.m. The “Sweet” train back was packed. Transfer at Hozanji Station. Let’s make a detour at this station. There’s a somewhat suspicious atmosphere here. Actually, this district once had many brothels. Several brothels are still operating clandestinely. Of course, there are also many ordinary shops and restaurants. Hozanji is a famous temple with a long history. Numerous monks practiced at this temple. First came the temple, then people settled, and later an amusement park and cable line were built. Before the cable line was built, people used to hike up the mountain. When I returned to the station, Mike was waiting. The train’s background music is “Chopsticks.” And we passed by Bull. I wonder what it feels like to commute to work or school on this train every day. We’ve returned to Torii-mae Station. Thanks, Mike and Bull! Finally, I go to the railroad crossing along the line. ド派手なケーブルカーですが、子どもたちは大喜び!大型遊園地は万単位でお金が飛んでいきますが、生駒山上遊園地は入園料無料なのでお財布に優しい貴重な遊園地です。天気の良い平日にお弁当持参で、大人の遠足もします。景色もすばらしく話しも弾みます。途中の宝山寺やその界隈のカフェもいいですよ。ケーブルカーが通勤に利用されていたとは認識不足でした!

I'm quite a special railfan, so I prefer standard trains for my commute.
The one thing that always sticks out when I view just about any video from Japan: the cleanliness! It's a far cry from America, where I live. Internationally, I see why we are viewed as slobs and IMHO, it's a term well-deserved.
Technically speaking, it's a cable car, not a train.

東京の青梅市(おうめし)、JR青梅線(おうめせん)の御嶽駅(みたけえき)から、御嶽山(みたけさん)にのぼるケーブルカーの下の駅である滝本駅まで、徒歩で45分くらいで行けます。バスだと10分ほどです。
御岳登山鉄道(御嶽山ケーブルカー)には「おいぬ様」もご乗車になれます。
おいぬ様のご乗車の際は、「おいぬ様専用乗車券」が必要です。
御嶽神社(みたけじんじゃ)は、御嶽山の山頂にあり、その境内(けいだい)のもっとも高いところ(御嶽山の頂上:標高929M)に鎮座されるのは、大口真神社(おおくちまがみしゃ)でございます。「大口真神」とは「おいぬ様」のことでございます。
江戸時代には「生類憐みの令」で有名な、戌年(いぬどし)生まれの5代将軍 徳川綱吉(とくがわ つなよし:あだ名は「犬公方(いぬくぼう)」)も台風で壊れた御嶽神社の再建等に多大な尽力をしました。
日本武尊(やまとたけるのみこと)を道案内した狼を「おいぬ様」として祀り信仰していたことから、現在では「ペット神社」ということにもなりました。
なので、ペット(特に犬)を連れての参拝が可能で、愛犬等の健康長寿等を願う御祈祷(ごきとう)も行われております。
