Tap CC for subtitles. Hokkaido Trip (Toya & Shakotan) Heading north on the Joban Expressway… Taking the ferry from Sendai to Hokkaido First, heading to the ferry terminal to check in for boarding Driving onto the ferry Since Sakurajima? Oh, right We’ve been on the Sakurajima ferry Even though everyone else stays in their cars. We’re the only ones getting off. Going from Sendai to Tomakomai Pacific Ferry Already here? Huh? Ishikari? Ishikari It’s huge. Whoa, it’s massive~ Massive~ It’s a boarding parking lot. Should we stop over here? I’ll just park there for now It’s huge~ We’ll do the boarding procedures This is it, right? Just scan the QR code from the reservation. This is it. Sticker and boarding pass So this is OK then? Wow. Smoke’s coming out~ Seriously, it’s huge~ I brought the vehicle registration, but didn’t use it The sheer size of the ferry “Ishikawa” is impressive Pedestrians board via the ramp
From the second floor It’s far Quickly check out the surf spot at Sendai New Port then look at the waves Then back to the ferry terminal Since I came all this way Just to see what it’s like If we’d got here earlier, I would’ve wanted to surf… From 4:00 AM to 8:00 PM (parking lot opening hours) So we can’t sleep in the car then? Close! Still got some left (waves) Still got some left Nice waves, huh~ There are a few spots breaking Check over there too? Isn’t it pretty wide? Heading back to the harbor. Everyone except the driver will part ways here.
Bye-bye. I wonder if I left anything behind~ Looks like I might have… Ended up boarding pretty late Huge… Spotted MAX Meanwhile, Kantaro was Vehicles started boarding too This is my first time on the Pacific Ferry It’s huge and exciting Stopped on the ramp lol Waiting until fully raised Chi-chan went inside the ship first Kantaro joined us too Yay! Arrived This time it’s a B-class berth I really love these cozy little spots, you know~ What’s this~ It’s nice, isn’t it? It’s super nice, right? It’s like a whole room here. Ishikari probably is, right? Oh, really? The one next door is super nice. Corner rooms are the best. First time on a big ferry, so excited. Time for dinner. We’re at the ship’s restaurant. I got a bit greedy. No rice. Sushi. Cheers Yakisoba Zangi Roast beef The mapo tofu is seriously delicious And the pickled ginger The pickled ginger is crazy good I’ll have seconds of this. Seriously, the pickled ginger is so good. Thanks for the meal. Let’s head out onto the deck. The night view of Sendai’s factories. Pretty, huh? Damn. Black smoke So cool… The start of a roughly 15-hour boat trip Nothing to do, so I’ll just sleep lol Goodnight~ No signal either A few hours later… Woke up The AC was blasting cold air & I woke up because my mouth was dry I’ll take a walk around the ship. There are plenty of vending machines besides this one. Game center Hot water and microwaves are available, so bringing your own bento seems fine The bath was comfortable too There’s also a convenience store. When you go up to the upper floor When you go up to the upper floor Restaurant Buffet style for both breakfast and dinner Alcoholic beverages are also available Light meal corner Lounge where you can relax while viewing the sea Currently heading north off the Sanriku coast Going back to sleep Crossing the Tsugaru Strait Arrival imminent Disembarking See you later then Bye-bye Chi-chan lands in Hokkaido first Chi-chan landed in Hokkaido first Hokkaido’s great (lol) Meanwhile, Kantaro Backed down the slope Backing down the slope making a U-turn at the bottom Finally heading outside Landing in Hokkaido! Going to pick up Chi-chan Got filmed from above (lol) We’ve met up Time to depart We’re here Feels like it went by in a flash Wow~ Finally Hokkaido First time setting foot here The ship didn’t rock as much as I expected Yeah, you’re right. I took seasickness medicine just in case, though. But I didn’t need it after all. It’s already lunchtime. Let’s make a quick detour. Maybe we should go check out the surf spot at Hamakuma once. That’s the plan, right? So few cars~ Feeling the vastness of Hokkaido. Anyway, the roads are wide. Heading to Mukawa’s roadside station for lunch. Dining spot: Tanpopo Had soba noodles and octopus takoyaki Alright, let’s eat That huge bus Encountered a bus for racehorses Looks like it’s transporting racehorses They’re here Horses So big~ Stamp rally book Got it, huh How many are there? It said something like 120-something It’s 124 That’s amazing This one and one more. Because there’s something I want to get. At Secoma? Hope they have it there. Probably the kind sold at convenience stores. I’ll go grab some of that I’ll head to the coast Hama-Atsuma Seaside Park Not many cars parked here~ Not parked What’s that? There are surfers out there, as expected. You can drive this far onto the beach. It’s an AWD, so it can handle it. Look over there, see ? venue’s already set up. You’re right. Actually, today We’re staying in Hamakuma Then tomorrow morning, after surfing But then this unexpected S League thing from the JPSA (Japan Pro Surfing Association) top league? The tournament dates completely overlapped. I honestly hadn’t paid any attention at all I had no idea at all. On social media, you know. All the pro surfers were heading to Hokkaido. I was like, “Why?” and looked it up. Turns out, for the first time in 30 years, a surfing competition is being held at Hamakuma. Probably pros are practicing like crazy I think Even though it’s not a mat tire They’ve come this far in So they can totally make it, right? (The HiAce next to us) But there aren’t that many people? Yeah, you’re right. It’s not exactly packed. You can actually walk out that far! There’s a surfing spot over there Looks great on the sandy beach. We’ll be moving a long way from the Tomakomai area. There are lots of camper vans too. We’ll do it on a day when we can surf leisurely. I wonder if any cars get stuck? But it seems like traffic’s flowing normally. There’s a restroom too. Hama-Atsuma Moving from Hamakuma to near Mt. Usu Mt. Tarumae is visible Passing over Shirotori Bridge Making a slight detour Purchasing ingredients at Roadside Station Date History Forest ¥100 Hay bale Hey, it’s a hay bale A typical Hokkaido landscape Heading upstream toward the hot spring A very charming hot spring inn I heard this Hokkaido guidebook is super useful and I got it at Seicomart It had half-price coupons in the back and free day-trip hot spring tickets This is where I just went. Bankei Onsen, a place called “Yuninoya”. It was absolutely amazing. The free part is only once per person So basically, it only cost 500 yen for adults. Meaning we got in for 250 yen per person? The atmosphere was really nice too. And it was pretty. It was awesome. This is huge, right? Seriously, this coupon Coke after a bath is the best Moving to tonight’s car camping spot Mount Usu is right in front of us. Good. Before it gets pitch black (we should be arriving soon) Animals start moving around a lot at night It’s dangerous My senior said so too Ah, it’s so quiet. Isn’t that nice? Roadside Station Sōbetsu Making dinner Still doesn’t really feel like I’m in Hokkaido yet Yeah, exactly Tomatoes bought at the roadside station “Date History Forest” They’re supposed to to be incredibly sweet. They’re from Takano Farm. This is Takagi Farm. Hey, this thing’s about the size of a handball, but isn’t it crazy heavy? What’s inside? Like, seriously. We should probably buy the vegetables over there. Getting the water supply ready. For the water inlet, just open the lid and insert the pump. It’s packed to the brim! It’s totally packed! Amazing So fresh Wonderful Wonderful, amazing! This size (cabbage) I wish regular supermarkets sold this It’d be great if they were this packed at this size And it’s 100 yen Let’s make the garlic butter soy sauce dressing first Having space for two people to cook is seriously convenient. Ah, seriously. The garlic smell is really coming through now. The rice is done. Finished. Garlic Butter Cabbage Added black pepper Looks delicious… Hokkaido Tomato Cabbage By the way, the white rice has barley mixed in Let’s eat Ah, yummy I’ve eaten “Delicious” I’ve eaten The rice is hot. But you know, this moisture thing… That’s the problem, right? Next time I’ll try using the absolute minimum amount. If you put it on my rice, I’ll eat it. Delicious. Hokkaido tomatoes. Delicious. Something I thought about after coming to Hokkaido. A bit about the highway
Concerned about highway fuel efficiency Calculating fuel efficiency 48 liters 383 ÷ 48 is Only about 8 km/L It’s improved to about 2 km/L I was expecting a dramatic improvement lol Did a little editing Gonna sleep Good morning Mount Usu looks beautiful Refrigerator/freezer running full blast at about -40% Heading out to Shakotan today In Shakotan It seems like there aren’t any hot springs where this HO (magazine) discount works Summer is the season for sea urchin, after all. It seems likely, though. We’re leaving. Glad the restroom was clean. That roadside station is Information Center Ai, right? And what’s more, you know what? I was surprised how cool it was. Today’s rough schedule On the Nishiyama hiking trail of Mt. Usu The breath of the earth Is it the breath? After that, when I saw Lake Toya I’ll go to Shakotan And I’m sure I’ll see Mount Yōtei along the way See Mount Yōtei, then the Shakotan Peninsula and eat sea urchin That’s the plan, I guess I’m really looking forward to the Nishiyama walking trail. My friend lives in Hokkaido, and they said I should go. I looked it up and got really interested. It sounds amazing. The sheer power of volcanic activity and human scientific prowess combined, right? This is Lake Toya, right? Whoa~ Wow~ That’s huge! Is that Mt. Yōtei? Isn’t that Mt. Yōtei? Ahh, amazing. Hokkaido is the best It’s cool Summer’s definitely Hokkaido, huh? Oh, is this it? Free parking Here it is It says “Free Parking” Nishiyama Foothills Crater Trail A place where you can see the scars left by an eruption that occurred within the residential area
A marsh formed in the middle of the road Looks like it turns into a boardwalk here Is the kindergarten the end point? It takes a little over an hour round trip There are stairs, slopes, and grassy areas, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended. There’s a stop sign. Oh, really? A spot where you can tell it used to be a road Like a road where people lived? It’s the story about volcanic activity suddenly erupting from beneath the land, right? Like how a swamp formed right in the middle of the road That’s the story It’s true. It’s become a boardwalk. Probably because the road was impassable. It’s caved in. The road is terraced. It rose 75 meters? The walking path (location) seems to pass through the site of the 2000 eruption That’s amazing. It’s kind of open now. They say it’s a crater. Abandoned heavy machinery That’s it Can’t see it well, the grass is too thick Meaning we saw it from below the (crater) earlier Kind of like a mini caldera Talking about the eruption Telegraph pole So this road used to look like this? Huh? Is this the tip? Eh? Oh, you mean that? This is the upper part, right? Probably. It’s buried. The road. So this part is visible? The very top. Whoa, this is the road below! Yeah, it is! The national highway has become stair-step terrain It’s terraced down towards the sea So this is where we are now, on the elevated part? Is that it? Originally~ Was it sunken down there? Was the original height about that high? Since the utility pole was there… I can’t picture the original terrain. Wow. Second Observation Deck The photos from back then are pretty amazing That’s true It’s a house The sea is beautiful Are we going down this? I guess so. The car really shows its age, huh? Whose car is this? Can you tell just from this? The kindergarten… It’s got holes in it, after all Actually, the playground equipment is buried. A kindergarten bus left behind. That’s amazing. Retro. But isn’t it huge for a kindergarten bus? Pumice rained down, the ground tilted Toya Lake Kindergarten luckily, the evacuation of people was completed before the eruption began, so there were no casualties. The moment eruption prediction saved lives The is totally blown out The threat of nature Walking back while gazing at Mt. Yōtei Arriving home The loofah dries well too It was way more intense than I imagined Who’d have thought we’d see a town destroyed like that But really, it means a volcano just went boom from under roads like this. That’s what it means, right? We’re heading towards the shore of Lake Toya now. Just strolling around. Strolling along the shore of Lake Toya. It’s incredibly cool. This is a nice spot. Look! You’re right! So clear So beautiful~ There’s a restroom here, you see. Plus, this parking lot doesn’t have a gate. Looks like you could camp out in your car here. Plus, you could probably do SUP here. Seems possible. And there might be shade. There’s a possibility. Over there, there’s quite a bit of shade, huh? The fact that so many vans are parked there means that, right? Oh no, this climb is really eating up fuel. Can you tell just by looking? You can see it clearly. Moving on. Lake Toya → Shakotan Peninsula Discovered a mysterious structure along the way They say it’s a snow fence to stop blizzards Mount Yōtei looks beautiful Going to draw spring water This place is super pretty too. Oh, there’s some kind of fish. What kind of fish is it? Looks like a rainbow trout. And you can kinda see Mt. Yotei. Mount Yōtei spring water It says to boil it before use Ah, it’s already super cloudy. It’s freezing cold. Heading for the Shakotan Peninsula. Arrived in Iwanai Town Lunch break at the roadside station Made it to Iwanai Seicomart Everyone’s ally Seicomart’s Hot Chef is way too delicious The meat is so tender, you know? Yeah And the flavor really soaks in This is seriously delicious. Until 5:30. That’s an hour from now, right? Arriving at 3 PM~ Last entry at 5 PM It’s a 40-minute round trip There’s a chance I won’t be able to get sea urchin today… Tonight’s dinner will end up being the same thing again I’ll hurry on ahead. Kamui Cape Now it’s just a matter of heading north along the coast. The ocean is so beautiful! Whoa~ Is that Kamui Cape? I guess? Isn’t it? That That rock… The part sticking out Max (car name), hang in there! Hang in there~ There are so many people~ We’ve arrived at the parking lot Should we go up this way? It’s pretty long, huh? Parking is free, so just a token donation. Let’s go~! We’ve reached the entrance to the cape. It’s super backlit though. Women prohibited (in the old days) The ocean is so beautiful Did it really take 40 minutes? Just that spot, it kinda… Yeah, something about it Maybe the Earth really is round Just a little detour Whoa~ watch out It might roll right off? Ah, this side is better Kamienai With so many people, we retreated early from the tip. Ahh~ Amazing. Wow, amazing~ A ridge like a dragon’s back We’ve returned to the parking lot So then Heading to Shakotan Town to get sea urchin Okawa Shoten We made it just in time for closing lol Bikimachi, Shakotan Town It’s Kamui Shrine Looks amazing Guess I’ll just buy one pack for now Do they sell other seafood besides sea urchin? If they do, I’ll buy some. There aren’t any supermarkets, right? I think there were just guesthouses and sea urchin restaurants or something Ah, still banners up!! banners up!! Please See, we ship to regional areas, you know We have it! We have sea urchin! Sea urchin is probably market price Is this how you write it? Thank you very much Alright, time to clean up this messy fridge Whoa, everything’s out On a sharp curve It collapsed The refrigerator Everything came out Good thing we made it in time Heading to the car camping spot Today’s potential car camping spots Mihama Fishing Port Coastal Green Space Plaza You can do SUP there too, right? SUP and kayak fishing People who do that stuff stay there. And apparently you can camp there too. Oh, really? Oh, like RVs and stuff. Yeah, there was a toilet, you know~ There are people with tents set up. There’s someone setting up a tent over there. There’s someone setting up a ton of tents. They only have awnings. Ah , but that ‘s nice. Let’s take a walk around nearby Encountered a Shakotan cat Nice, this spot It’s super nice~ It’s a peaceful, calming spot. Tomorrow we’ll launch from here We’ll circle around the fishing port breakwater and head over to Treasure Island. I hear it’s super beautiful We’ll make dinner inside the car Finally, we’ll have our long-awaited sea urchin in a bowl Just need to cook the rice today Since we have premium ingredients An agonizing 40 minutes Today’s main dish Fresh sea urchin from Shakotan It’s Northern Purple Sea Urchin Because it’s brine sea urchin Off the coast of America No alum used I don’t think it’s bitter No alum smell Hey, it’s my first time eating this! I figured I might as well eat it in season I rushed in 10 minutes before closing Hey, it’s my first time eating this! It’s pricey, but you know how it is with these things. It’s spending worth the Money. Almost done cooking. One more minute! Ah, one more minute♪ It’s done! Let’s dig in! Hurry up, hurry up~ Hold on Come on, the sea urchin’s right there. OK I drained the water. This one. For now, this much should be fine. Let’s eat. Shakotan’s Sea urchin! Well, how is it? How is it? Not your thing? Delicious. Ahh! That’s great~ It’s good? That’s great~ Did you just have a Prejudice against it? It wasn’t a prejudice. I tried it and thought it wasn’t tasty. Oh, well then… Shakotan sea urchin is delicious. Yeah, yeah, it’s tasty. That’s great~ So this is sea urchin. This is sea urchin… Delicious. This is the best . at Secoma wasn’t needed Washed dishes while conserving water Preparing for tomorrow’s SUP Inflating it in the evening so it won’t be noisy early in the morning Filling it with air using a blower and a manual air pump Place it on the roof and secure it with ropes Going to bed early to prepare for tomorrow Good morning Checking the sea conditions It’s cold. The waves are calm, but… The wind will be weaker in a few hours, so We’ll wait and see. One hour has passed. The wind has died down. We’ll start getting ready. *Forgot the mic cover, so the sound is muffled in the waterproof case Since cruising is the main focus, we’ll leave the cooler behind Don’t forget the safety flag either Probably about 2-3 meters of wind Ah, it’s fluttering a bit~ I wouldn’t hesitate at my usual spot, but since this is new territory, I’m a bit cautious. I’ll enter the water keeping turning back in mind. The fishfinder’s GPS shows where I launched and my track. I think it’s necessary for safety when in unfamiliar waters. Forgot to charge it, so it died quickly… lol Treasure Island straight ahead is our destination. It’s only about 500m away, so pretty close. Arrived at Treasure Island. It had become a seagulls’ nesting ground. Even so, the water is too clear. Let’s try filming with a 360-degree camera. It’s so clear you’d think, “Is this a river?” It’d be even more amazing if it were sunny… Next, I’ll try filming underwater. Sea urchin!! Absolutely gorgeous Water depth is about 5m The water was so clear I couldn’t even focus on fishing lol I’ll fish just a little bit. I caught something! It’s tiny~ Caught a rockfish (gaya). A sea gull is bobbing around. Damn, that’s a huge bird. Rockfish? Maybe a small rockfish? Satisfied after playing with a young rockfish. Docking now. Packing up the SUP. Brought 12L x 2 of water for washing This sliding storage was really worth making Leaving the American Coast behind. Goodbye Treasure Island. Actually, I couldn’t go to the bath yesterday, so I’m heading to a nearby hot spring. It wasn’t open yet. Maybe it’ll be just right once I get ready. Waiting a bit in the parking lot. It’s a hot spring on high ground. Photos of old herring fishing. Huge. Seems like the place where the world’s largest tuna was caught. 300-kilogram class are common It was a great hot spring It was an absolutely fantastic place Today is our third day in Hokkaido We’re already leaving Shakotan Today’s a big travel day Yeah, it’s a travel day. From west to east . Since the main part is eastern Hokkaido . times? Three or four times the price difference What we bought was tender-cooked octopus I caught a glimpse of something The fishing boat flags were incredibly vivid I thought I’d take a look Towards the fishing port Bright, large fishing flags Is this some kind of local custom around here? I wonder? Those fishing boat flags were incredibly vivid We’re moving on from here in one go Arrived at Roadside Station Minami Furan Roadside Station parking lot Overnight parking allowed. Can you sleep in your car? Free RV park What ? Tiny It’s a rabbit It should just get off the road Go that way~ It stopped under the sign though Isn’t that a rabbit ? Hokkaido really does have a lot of wildlife . too Brrr! It’s cold~ I’m shocked~ Delta Pro recovered to 96% Shakotan Gyo-kyo Gyo Ry…n? (Can’t say it right) Shakotan Looks like Sakana-kun (talent) lol Say “gyo gyo” (imitating a fish) Super tender octopus stew This was a recommended item, right? This is for the side dish Let’s eat rice Cabbage miso soup Cabbage miso soup Done Tonight’s dinner Shakotan Sea Urchin Rice Bowl and Kobira Soft-Boiled Octopus & Miso Soup Looks delicious What a treat Let’s eat Tastes great today too Who knew it’d be 15°C outside? Way too cold (Can’t believe it’s summer) The miso soup is delicious I never thought I’d end up wearing a fleece-lined hoodie How about the tender stew? What flavor is it? Soy sauce? Whoa, it’s so tender! Whoa, it’s so tender! Delicious! Like soy sauce and mirin? It tastes like simmered food. Wow~ Sea urchin. Amazing, like the vast ocean spread out. Can you see Cape Kamui? Yeah, I can see it. You know, doesn’t it kinda feel like offal? It’s not tough. Seriously, it’s like… Wouldn’t it be crazy to put this in the rice cooker? Octopus rice The broth too? Yeah. About half gone by day 3 A little over half gone? Looks like we’ll need to drain it once a week. 24°C 47% Comfortable. Thanks for watching until the end!
