The BEST Japanese Food Tour in Japan & How Much It Cost

Japanese Food in Japan. The BEST Dishes, Where we Ate & How Much It Cost. 5 days in Tokyo, 1 day in Osaka & 3 days in Kyoto. Time for sushi! This chain has several locations across Tokyo. We hadn’t tried it on our first trip. We ordered straight from the tablet, and our sushi arrived via the conveyor belt. Sushi in Japan is usually really cheap — about $1 USD per plate. We sampled lots of sushi and some appetizers. Everything tasted fresh and delicious. This burger sushi was listed as one of their most popular dishes. Not sure if it’s more for locals or tourists, but it was super juicy and tasty. The menu is huge, not just sushi. We tried several dishes, and our favorite was the Shrimp Tempura roll. To end the night, we stopped at 7-Eleven for one of our favorite Japanese convenience store desserts — the Crème Brûlée ice cream. So good! Crunchy top, creamy center — the perfect way to wrap up our first day. Starting the day with a quick breakfast from 7-Eleven. Most popular 7-Eleven items in Japan: Egg Salad Sandwich & Tuna Mayo Onigiri. Both are delicious! Creamy egg salad, soft bread, and the onigiri is packed with tasty filling. Cheap and perfect for starting the day. Time for lunch! We came early to beat the lines because this place is super popular. Ichiran specializes in ramen. They have locations across Tokyo, Japan, and worldwide. You order and pay at a kiosk before heading to your seat. Not your typical restaurant — minimal interaction with staff. Sit down, customize your ramen, and it’s delivered directly to your spot. We also tried stewed pork with rice as an appetizer — juicy, flavorful, and perfectly seasoned. And now the main event: the ramen! Rich, flavorful broth — absolutely delicious. Customize noodles, spice level, broth richness, and extras to your liking. Ichiran is well-known for a reason. Highly recommend it! Arrive early to avoid the long lines; we went at 11:30 AM and had no wait. On the way back to the train, we grabbed a dessert at a coffee shop. Cream puffs are super popular in Japan. Crispy outside, creamy inside — absolutely delicious! We found a local spot right next to Kanda Station, specializing in yakitori (chicken skewers). They even had an English menu, which isn’t so common in local spots. We ordered drinks and food, and they brought us chicken meatballs “for free.” Not sure if it was really free or already included — the check was in Japanese. The meatballs were amazing — juicy, well-seasoned, and a perfect start. We tried a few different yakitori, potato salad, and rice. Everything tasted great with a nice smoky flavor. Our favorite? The chicken tails. Tip: Always ask or translate what you’re ordering. We picked something from a photo without checking, and it wasn’t great. Better safe than sorry! The experience was fantastic — great local vibe, tasty food, and reasonable prices. Uobei has multiple restaurants across Tokyo. After visiting a few on our first trip, this one is our favorite! They are a traditional conveyor belt sushi restaurant. You order from a tablet and the food arrives at your seat, with minimal human interaction. They have many options, not just sushi. The sushi seems fresh, tastes delicious, and is very affordable. Our favorites were the Fatty Tuna and the Torched Salmon with Mayo. We highly recommend this place. We had a lot of sushi, everything was delicious, and it was so cheap — approximately $10.50 USD per person. We decided to try this popular Japanese restaurant chain that specializes in Takoyaki. I really like Takoyaki and they serve it with different toppings, like egg salad, which is another thing that I really like. So I decided to try it. My wife had the Yakisoba, and she enjoyed it. Good portion and great value. I had the Takoyaki with egg salad and it was so good. Not the best Takoyaki I’ve had on this trip, but the combination elevated the flavor! I really recommend this dish. Time for dessert at Beard Papa’s. They have many locations in Tokyo and around the world. We have seen them in Seattle, USA. They specialize in cream puffs, which are our favorite. They have a crispy outside, soft inside, lots of delicious filling, and are very affordable. This time, they also had a special one: Mille-Feuille. It was delicious too, but we prefer the traditional one. It was already mid-afternoon, so we decided to visit another iconic place in Shinjuku and get some drinks. This alley has many Izakayas, making it a great place to enjoy the evening. Since we already had plans for the night and were in Shinjuku, we decided to visit during the day. It’s already beautiful during the day, but at night it’s even more beautiful with all the lights, but it is also packed with people. You will pay more here because it’s a touristy area, but even being expensive, we think it’s still worth it to grab a couple of drinks and enjoy the vibe. We decided to stop at one of the Izakayas; we don’t know the name of the place. There weren’t many options open in the afternoon. We ordered a couple of drinks and some yakitoris. The chicken ones were delicious and very juicy. But we preferred the pork belly ones. We found this place on our first trip while visiting the Senso-ji temple. We wanted to eat Tonkatsu, and there was a huge line at a famous restaurant near the temple. We decided to walk and found this very small local restaurant. This restaurant is so small, with one table and a few seats at the counter. I think it fits less than 10 people, with only the chef and the owner working together. They have a menu in English, but they barely speak English, just the basics. We started with the potato salad, and it was delicious. It has a sort of smoky flavor; I’m not sure what it is, maybe smoked tofu. And now their specialty: our favorites are the Pork Loin and the Shrimp ones. They are so crispy, not greasy at all. The pork loin is very succulent. And the sides are delicious too, especially the Miso soup and salad with their homemade dressing. The shrimp is huge and very crunchy too. Perfectly cooked. We highly recommend this place. It’s our favorite restaurant in Tokyo. Lots of rain on our way back, but we had to stop at the Lawson convenience store to get some dessert. We tried a few items from Lawson, and our favorites were the Fromage Tart and Crunky. We’ll pass on the eclair. The Fromage Tart is amazing; it’s a must-try! A great way to finish the day! This street is very close to the station; it has lots of shops, restaurants, and bars. Also, my favorite Takoyaki is located here. I’ve already tried Takoyaki in many places, even in Osaka where it was created, but this is my favorite. A very simple place; it doesn’t seem the cleanest one, but their Takoyaki is so cheap and delicious! Their Takoyaki has a lot of flavor; I think they put some seasoning in the batter. It’s not bland at all, with a lot of filling too. The toppings add even more flavor. Delicious. We highly recommend it. After doing some shopping, it was time for lunch. We found this place at Ueno Station. Their specialty is the Katsu-sando, a sandwich made with a Tonkatsu. We hadn’t had any of this sandwich, even on our first trip. The bar’s ambiance is very modern and cool. If you like whiskey, they have many options. We had a couple of appetizers: the Chicken Karaage was delicious. The portion was small, but it was great and very crispy. We wish there was more. And the truffle fries were great too, a perfect pair with the drinks. They weren’t golden, but they were very crispy. The sandwich was incredible! The meat was juicy and crispy, the bread was crispy too, and the salad was a great accompaniment. Our favorite item there! We went to a local restaurant specializing in Kushikatsu, another Osaka classic. Basically, it’s a small katsu on a skewer. We ordered a couple of favorite Japanese appetizers: Potato Salad and Chicken Karaage. Both were delicious. We tried several different Kushikatsu. Crispy outside, juicy inside. Our favorite was the beef one. The side dishes were good too. We recommend this spot — local vibe and great food. Beautiful spot, full of game memories. The food was surprisingly good! Compared to parks we visited in the US and Europe, this was the best theme park food we’ve had. Burgers were juicy and well-seasoned. Appetizers were great too. The Bacon Cheeseburger was our favorite. The desserts looked amazing and tasted really good too. Our favorite was the Pole Cake. Fantastic experience. Delicious food. We highly recommend it. If you don’t go early, book in advance! We tried the DK Sundae. The line was short and it was worth it — delicious banana flavor. Recommend buying it with the souvenir mug. We also tried the DK Wild Hot Dog — it was surprisingly tasty! The topping added a lot of flavor. Highly recommend. We went to the Shincho area, right next to the canal of Takase River. Great vibe, lots of restaurants and Izakayas. We wanted to eat at an Izakaya, but it was full — a 40-minute wait. So we decided to go to another Izakaya during the wait time. I’ve heard about this place from locals. Very affordable place to get drinks and eat some traditional food. Good local vibes. Most people were locals. Prices were very affordable. We had a couple of drinks and appetizers. The fried chicken with Ponzu Sauce was delicious. Not very crispy because it’s served with the sauce, but very tasty. The Yakitoris were delicious too. Very tender, well-seasoned, with a great smoky flavor. Highly recommend this place! Time to go back to the Izakaya that we wanted to visit in the first place. This Izakaya has a very Japanese-style setup. Shoes off. Very low dining tables. There are some reserved tables where you can gather with friends in a more private area. Prices were affordable too. We had a few drinks and tried some of their appetizers. Started with the Grilled Rice Balls and they were delicious. Crispy outside, great flavor with the mayo, even without any filling. This place specializes in Gyoza, so we had to try a couple of their most popular ones. The Katchan Gyoza had a more traditional flavor, delicious filling. Recommend this one. The Cheese one is not bad, but we preferred the traditional flavor. Fried Chicken was delicious. Very juicy and crispy even served with the sauce. Spicy Shrimp was good, but pretty overall flavor. Very little spice and not crispy. We preferred the other dishes. Great experience. Great vibe. Food was delicious! Highly recommend. After enjoying the temple, we returned to the Ninenzaka area and we found this place to grab a bite. We saw the croquettes, they seemed delicious and decided to try them. All of them were delicious! Our favorite was the Curry Croquette. Very crispy and tasty. The meat croquette with the egg yolk was very creamy and delicious too. We found this place in our first visit to Kyoto in 2024. This restaurant is close to the Imperial Palace. They specialize in Ramen. You order at the machine at the entrance and receive your order at the table. Our second time visiting Japan, we tried many Ramen dishes, and this is our favorite one! They serve their Ramen with Pork Belly, instead of Pork Loin. The meat is juicier and has a lot more flavor. Their prices are already very cheap. We ordered a set with the Ramen, Rice, and Fried Chicken; ordering a set is even cheaper. The Chicken and Rice were delicious. Great start and pretty good deal. The Ramen is amazing. Packed with flavor, especially from the Pork Belly. Still our favorite in Japan (by far)! It’s a must-try in Kyoto! Right next to the restaurant, there’s a Lawson convenience store. We stopped to grab a dessert. We tried this Milk Ice cream, it was very creamy and delicious. We don’t know how the ice cream waffle was still crunchy. We discovered this place on our first trip too. They have units all over Japan. It’s quite popular, especially for tourists. Their specialty is Katsu, as their name suggests. We quite like them, but most of the time there’s a line-up. We don’t recommend spending your time on the lines, so arrive early to avoid the crowds. Their prices are as cheap as other local options, but they have many Katsu options. We had the Sirloin Meal Set and it was delicious. The crust is not that crispy, but the meat is very tender. Their Miso Soup, Rice, and Salad Dressing are delicious. Great to pair with the Katsu. The Mince Meat Katsu is delicious too. Very juicy and packed with flavor. We also tried the Tenderloin Katsu, leaner cut with thicker slices. It was a different experience; you can have the meat less cooked. Very tender cut. Delicious too. But the Sirloin cut was our favorite. We recommend this place (if there’s no line-up). Great meal! We are back in the Kawaramachi area to visit the Nishiki Market. This market is packed with local food vendors. Lots of great options for traditional local food. We had to try their traditional Shrimp Tempura and it was delicious, very crispy and fresh. Another must-visit place. Lots of great local food options and most prices are affordable. Heading to our last stop before catching the train. We had to try a very famous ice cream nearby. Cozy cafe located close to the Nishiki Market. We came only to try the Cremia Ice Cream. It was really worth the visit! One of the best ice creams we had! Very creamy. Insanely delicious! Just try it! Thank you for watching. If you enjoyed our content, subscribe to support this channel.
