The Magic of Monaco & More | Getaway
[Music] Welcome to Getaway and to the magic of the Mediterranean. Travel is all about the unexpected and every day on this trip delivers something new as we cruise from one gorgeous port to the next aboard scenic Eclipse. If there was a code for living your best life, I think we may have cracked it. Last week, we left Rome and headed down Italy’s west coast to explore the island of Capri. It looks very tight and very small. You can’t be claustrophobic. You know what you have to do? You have to pray. Pray. And the ancient city of Pompei. It’s like we’ve stepped back in time because things are so well preserved. This week, our scenic Eclipse Italian icons voyage is taking us to the Mediterranean islands of Sardinia and Corsica up to Monaco and finishing this most magnificent of travel experiences in the French city of Nice. [Music] Today we’re anchored off Port Chervo in northern Sardinia. From here, we’re traveling 20 minutes by road to San Pantalo, an ancient village dating back to 800 AD. What a backdrop to this to this town. These mountains, these mountains we call the Sardinian Doommites. All rocks, all mountains here are granite. And that’s why or you can see even here in the village how they used the granite to build up the houses. Over the centuries this beautiful village has kept its oldworld charm and its artistic heart. It’s known for the artists and handcraft workers which uh they chose to live here in the 60s of last century. And then uh here we will find in all the small roads some artist or some handcraft worker they are sailing their their products. Despite its small size, San Pantalo’s charming streets and narrow laneways leave a big impression. [Music] Beautiful beaches and charming villages aside, Sardinia is also a renowned wine region. First of all, we are on an island with nearly no industry. So all the things which we are producing here are organic. If you have a look up there, you can see the rest of an old castle from the 12th 14th century of last uh AC. Oh wow. And up there is the castle of Ballayana. That’s why this winery called Ballayana which is a part of the winery of Pierro Manini. [Music] These scenic free choice excursions are of course all inclusive to give us guests the best experiences and locations at every port. This one, the name is falc and this is a cano now. H the international name is ginach. And if you needed an excuse for a daily tipple, apparently a Sardinian red can add years to your life. We have the blue zone here in Sardinia. And in the blue zone, the 100 years old people, they’re all confirming that they are still drinking wine doing their dishes like lunch and dinner. And it’s the Canonau wine. So if we drink this, we will live to wear a 100. Was it more than Why are we Why are we having a glass? We should just have the bottle. No, no, no. You have You can drink. But one glass one. Okay. So still in moderation. So cheers to living to 100. Yes. [Music] out of the window. At 168 m long and with just 114 guest suites, Scenic Eclipse is as spacious as it is luxurious. Every suite is decked out to give guests the ultimate in comfort and of course comes with a full-size balcony to really capture the at experience. As much as I love getting out exploring, nothing beats coming back to my own private oasis and just taking it all in. [Music] From the gorgeous Italian island of Sardinia, Scenic Eclipse has taken us north to Corsica on our 8-day Italian icons cruise. Despite its close proximity to Sardinia, Corsica is actually part of France. This laid-back island has a very rich history from prehistoric settlements to Greek and Roman influence. [Music] are in the oldest village in Corsica. We are on one of the oldest. We are about 500 m above the sea level. And this village was built back in the 10th century. So 900 which makes one of the oldest one in Corsica. And what is its name? It’s San Antonio. And how many people live here? There’s about 50 people lives here all year long. It’s very very tiny. It’s very very small. It’s really a village. Well, everybody knows everybody and it’s probably all the same family. There’s four family that’s sharing the village. Actually, this hilltop village in the north of the island with its ancient stone houses, narrow laneways, and panoramic views has a charm all of its own. [Music] For the millions of tourists who visit Corsa every year, how is it still so untouched? The reason why is because as we try to protect our nature as much as possible. So here there is no big constructions. We don’t have like big hotels. We don’t have those fast food, those international company. It does not exist in the island. For example, if you go down at the beach, you don’t have those massive huge hotels, those huge resort. We try to protect as much as possible. And what you have to understand is 3/4 of the island is totally wild. So, it’s really really wide island. It does have that rugged sort of appeal. I can feel it. This tiny village has one very popular local delicacy. Why is citrus so good here in Corsica? All right, this is something we’ve been making for thousands of years. Okay, here the first people that came here were the Greeks, so 2,600 years ago. And with them, they brought vineyards, olive oil, and lemons. So since then, we’ve been producing lemons. And it’s very famous here. You’ve made a drink that I hear is very popular. Exactly. It’s not lemon chill. There is no alcohol. It’s pure lemon juice that we of course we mix with water. This is something we have to have in the morning. So we buy the bottle which is already made and you pour a little bit in the morning. Chinchin. Chin chin. What do you think? I love it. It’s good, eh? I kept hearing you had to add sugar, so I was expecting it to be quite bitter, but that’s beautiful. It is not. It’s very actually very sweet kind of lemon. I don’t need sugar in that. No, you don’t. We’re anchored just off the pretty port of Calvie, so guests can explore at leisure, soak up the comforts on board, or head further a field. We’ve signed up for the old villages of Corsica scenic free choice excursion and our next stop is a local favorite. [Music] What is so special about this village? There’s this narrow little street full of cobblestone that give a lot of charm to the village. Full of colors, you know, the blue color of piña which makes it unique. The contrast of the water, the contrast of the architecture. It’s absolutely beautiful village. To me, it’s probably my most favorite village. Pina is one of many inland villages in Corsica. developed because centuries ago when there was a risk of invasion from pirates, it was considered far safer to live away from the coast. Look at this auditorium. This place was made basically back in the 15th century for the animals. So we used to store all the keep all the animals like animals, cows, donkeys right here. The former stockyard was transformed into a theater back in 1974 and is now listed as a historical monument. But what PA is best known for these days is its artisan origins. This is Thomas is the third generation of making ceramic here. This place was opened in 1976 and they’ve been making ceramic since then. So everything is handmade. They have beautiful color and the typical color of PA is the blue because the color of the water which is really really blue and the color of the sky. Wow. So when you come here to PA, you know, you know you’re getting one-ofa-kind handmade ceramics. Exactly. Waking up aboard Scenic Eclipse is already a magical travel experience, but when it delivers you to locations like Monaco, you know the day is set to get even better. L. What a glamorous place this is and very tiny as well. It is a second smallest state in the Europe at just one square mile. It’s unbelievable. that all this money is concentrated on such a small space, isn’t it? Despite its small size, Monaco is known as one of the wealthiest countries in the world. Its historic casino was established back in the 1860s and has become a symbol of the extravagant lifestyle. Champagne witnesses. Just steps from the casino is another local icon, Cafe de Paris. And now Sam, look around you. You are in the most iconic place in Monaco, the most iconic restaurant, which was opened already in 1868 as a meeting point for high society. The location itself isn’t the only thing that’s made this restaurant a Monaco landmark. Well, you can taste good crabs everywhere in France. It’s our best appetitizer, our favorite brunch. But only here in this place, in this restaurant, you can taste the right one. Suzette. Legend has it that royalty at the time was dining here. And the chef accidentally set fire to the lure on the crepes. Do you see it? That glorious mistake created this magnificent dessert. Try it. Taste it. [Music] So soft. Subtle kick of orange. What a delicious mistake. [Music] Monaco has been ruled by the Grimmaldi family for eight centuries, making it the longest running royal family in Europe. The Prince’s Palace is the centerpiece of the old town area. Built in the 12th century as a fortress, it’s now a lavish home to Prince Albert and his family. It’s really building up now in front of the palace. Is something going to happen? Oh yes, we are waiting for a change of the guard, the main one, which is just once in the day at 12:00 at midday. At just over 200 hectares, Monaco is the second smallest country in the world and only 2/3 the size of New York’s Central Park. Even more unbelievable is the opportunity to see it from up high. If being on a superyacht wasn’t surreal enough, taking off from it on private helicopter is really taking things to another level. [Music] All right, off. Scenic Eclipse has two resident helicopters giving guests the ability to see each destination from all angles. Are we still looking at Monaco here? Nope. Uh from uh Monaco is behind us. And now over here to the left is Monto or this is now France over here to the left. Wow. So Monaco is just a tiny little dot from up here. It’s tiny little dots. Yeah. So, Monaco, France, and Italy in 30 minutes. That’s correct. Well, I can honestly say I’ve never been to three countries in 30 minutes, but now I can. And what perfect conditions for flying. The sun’s out. It’s just glorious. Yeah, it’s beautiful day. And now we are back almost in France. We’re about to cross the border. That is open. Of course, uh they’re not checking anyone here. All right, now we back in France. We don’t need to show our passports to cross over. And just when you thought one day couldn’t possibly have any more highlights, [Music] scenic and rich events are one-off experiences that always promise to add something special to your trip. And stepping out at night in Monaco of all places, it feels like this one might be extra memorable. Built within a cliff face, the Oceanographic Museum is one of Monaco’s most striking buildings and home to more than 6,000 marine specimens. [Music] For us scenic guests, it’s the backdrop for a very special evening. [Music] [Applause] Watching a private classical concert in this iconic venue is a truly memorable travel experience. [Music] [Applause] L is for the way you look at me. From the ancient city of Rome to the Mediterranean islands of Capri, Sardinia, and Corsica, Scenic’s Italian icons voyage has given us the chance to completely bliss out and soak up the very best of the Med. After exploring Monaco from the sea, the land, and the air up here, it’s quite nice. You almost feel quite free just to see it all. We’ve reached our final destination, the French city of Nice. Nice is best known for its 7 km long prominard, showing off views out to the Mediterranean Sea and the complimentary ebikes from Scenic Eclipse are the best way to explore at leisure. There’s something about being on a bike that makes you feel totally carefree. just cruising and exploring at your own pace. Just half an hour inland from Nice is St. Paul Defants, one of the oldest medieval towns on the French Riviera. So Nice is a big, beautiful vibrant city and then just a short drive we end up here in the countryside in this beautiful quaint village. Yeah, it’s it’s a big contrast for us compared to Nice because it’s a charm of France with here you have the fortification there. You imagine from the 16th century you could uh walk all along the fortification and during 10 years between 1537 until 1547. It took a long time to protect the village. So 10 years to build the the surrounding wall. Yes. The ancient city walls are still partly intact. And while the town itself is tiny, it holds a wealth of history and charm. And this village, it’s very select place. It’s a place to be. It’s like a little more mart from many writers, painters. What? Why do you think they were all coming here? Because um there is a light very special here for the painters. It’s so charming. Worldrenowned artists like Picasso and Matise all spent time in St. Paul and that artistic spirit remains. The village attracts a couple of million visitors a year but has just 3,000 permanent residents. Look at this street. Very nice, huh? Isn’t it? It’s very tiny. Yeah, it’s very French uh tiny little street representing the charm of S Paul. We still have people living here, you know. Really? Yes. And some have houses from a long time and they even have a heart gallery. In the center of the village is a 17th century fountain, now a historical relic, but once the primary source of water for the town. So people were bringing their own water up from the well. Exactly. And you see this is it was a whole hotel and here that that was a washing house. It’s like the heart of the village here, you know, where people meet and talk. The town’s narrow streets house many local treasures. This is a traditional type of nougat. Yes, it is a traditional nougat from Province and they made different nougat. This one is made with the white egg. It’s a traditional one, but we have different specialtity even with pistachio, with red fruits, with orange. You could smell it if you want. And the almonds. Yes, it’s almonds. And you could conserve one year outside. Oh, you can have it for one year. It would not last in my house for one year. It would last a day. [Music] that you like. That’s the best new car I’ve ever tasted. [Music] Experience an ultra luxury scenic Eclipse signature yacht cruise for the journey of a lifetime in Europe and the Mediterranean. Secure your voyage today with scenic super early bird offers. Getaway viewers can save an additional $300 per person off select scenic 2026 cruises. From the glamour of Monaco to the charm of its seaside towns and medieval villages, the Med really does cover all bases. Throw in some sunshine, good times, a super yacht, and a helicopter ride. This is definitely a holiday to remember. [Music] You can share away.

Getaway is Australia’s favourite travel show with wonderful holiday ideas for all tastes and budgets as well as those once in a lifetime, dream destinations. Getaway airs Saturdays 5.30pm on Channel 9.
After traveling down Italy’s west coast, the second part of Sam’s cruise continued across the sparkling Mediterranean to the Italian island of Sardinia. Utilising its GPS Dynamic Positioning to stop close to
shore without dropping anchor on sensitive seabeds, Scenic Eclipse arrived at the northern resort town of Porto Cervo. From there Sam ventured 20 minutes by road to San Pantaleo.
Nestled amidst the ‘Sardinian Dolomites’, the charming village, dating back to 800 A.D., captivated Sam with its old-world charm and vibrant artistic heart. But Sardinia isn’t just about picturesque villages; it’s also a renowned wine region. Sam toured a local winery, Piero Mancini, where organic
grapes thrive in the granite soil. In the shade of an ancient olive tree Sam had a wine tasting paired with local meats and cheeses, all part of her Scenic Freechoice excursion. And for those seeking a
longer life, apparently a glass of Sardinian red is said to be the secret to reaching 100 years old!
At 168 meters long with just 114 guest suites, Scenic Eclipse is as spacious as it is luxurious. Every suite is decked out to give guests the ultimate in comfort, boasting a full-sized balcony to soak in the
at-sea experience. As much as Sam loved getting out and exploring, returning to her private suite for a quiet cup of tea was a great way to relax.
Despite its close proximity to Sardinia, Corsica, the next port, is actually a part of France. The laid-back island has a rich history, from pre-historic settlements to Greek and Roman influences, and remains untouched by modern development. Brimming with rugged beauty, the tiny 900 year old hilltop village of Sant’Antonino is one of the highest on the island. Sam strolled through charming laneways past ancient stone houses and admired the panoramic views over the natural landscape.
On the sunny patio of Clos Antonini vineyards, Sam tasted their refreshing citronnade, a specialty drink of lemon juice and water with a dash of grape juice.
Scenic Eclipse was anchored just off the pretty Corsican port of Calvi, where guests could either explore at leisure, stay on board and make the most of the amenities, or head further afield on a Scenic Freechoice excursion. Sam signed up for the ‘old villages of Corsica’ tour which included the quaint town of Pigna. The cobblestone streets are home to many artisans and craftspeople, like the pottery studio that Sam visited, famous for the blue glaze inspired by the colour of the sea and the
sky.
Waking up in your Scenic Eclipse suite is magical enough, but imagine waking up in Monaco! The sovereign city-state is the second smallest in the world, at only 2.1kms square, it’s a concentrated hub of wealth and extravagance! The historic Monte-Carlo Casino, established in 1863, is a symbol of elegance and opulence. Steps away is another icon, Café de Paris, where Sam just had to try the crêpes Suzette, created there for a visit by then Prince of Wales.
At Monaco’s Prince’s Palace, Sam witnessed the changing of the guards before discovering a truly breath-taking perspective from one of Scenic Eclipse’s two Airbus helicopters!^ The private helicopter ride offered unparalleled views of Monaco, France and Italy, all in a mere 30 minutes!
To top off a fantastic day, that evening an exclusive Scenic Enrich event was held at Monaco’s Oceanographic Museum. The stunning cliff-face building hosted a private classical concert amidst marine wonders for a truly memorable night.
The final destination was the French city of Nice, and the best way to explore the promenade was a ride on one of the Scenic Eclipse e-bikes. That afternoon Sam took a half hour drive away to Saint Paul de Vence. The small village once attracted the likes of Picasso, Chagall and Mattisse, and Sam felt transported back in time within its crumbling city walls. Down one of the narrow roads she visited a traditional sweet shop for a sample of their melt-in-your-mouth nougat.
