17,300円!二階建てベッドのコンパクトルームで12時間の夜行船旅|さんふらわあ ごーるど【神戸→大分レトロフェリー】
It’s been a while since I last boarded the Sunflower. Enjoy a sea voyage filled with sunshine. October 13th, 2025. Today, I’m boarding a ferry on the final day of Expo Osaka. The ship I’ll be sailing on today is the beloved “Sunflower.” Its signature symbol is the sun. This time, it’s a 12-hour journey from Kobe to Oita. The ferry I’m boarding is called “Sunflower Gold.” The name is written entirely in hiragana—so cute! The room I reserved is a standard single cabin. The Kobe–Oita route sails across the calm Seto Inland Sea. I expected it to be crowded since it’s the last day of the Expo, but there are plenty of empty seats. Alright, let’s set off on this 412-kilometer sea journey! The entrance area is bustling with people. As soon as you board, the familiar “Sunflower” song plays endlessly throughout the ship. My cabin number is 6223. Your boarding pass also serves as the room key card. The cabin size is 6.4 square meters. It’s compact but includes a sink, table, and closet. You get slippers, a hand towel, and a toothbrush with the Sunflower logo on them. Since it’s usually for two people, there’s a bunk bed. It feels a bit like a capsule hotel inside the room. When you turn on the TV, you can check the ferry’s current location. Oh! The map looks wonderfully retro. You can adjust the volume of the ship’s announcements. Passengers mainly use decks 5 and 6 during the voyage. There are massage chairs and a scenic bath, but most of the area is for cabins. Rooms where you can stay with your pets!? There are even captain costumes for pets—adorable! There’s still time before departure, so let’s go outside. It’s neither too hot nor too cold—perfect weather for a sea trip. Ah! Those are fireworks from Expo Osaka! The final fireworks marking the end of the Expo. Six months went by so fast. There were mixed opinions, but I’m glad it ended successfully. Fifteen minutes before departure, the sound of a gong echoes throughout the ship. At 7:00 p.m., we depart Kobe Port right on time. ! The staff wave goodbye to the passengers. Thank you! See you again! I’ve come down to deck 5. There’s a promenade, a shop, and a game area—perfect for relaxing. And further inside, there’s a restaurant. Dinner is a buffet-style meal for 2,000 yen. Alcoholic drinks are extra, but everything else is all-you-can-eat. So I’ll make sure to get my money’s worth! There are many Kyushu specialties like black pork cutlets, fried chicken, and champon noodles. Roast pork, roast beef, and salmon sashimi. Steamed dumplings, simmered sardines, and beef-and-potato stew. Meatballs and chicken cooked in coconut cream. There are two kinds of rice—plain white and mixed chicken rice. And of course, curry! The dessert corner has four kinds of cakes and ice cream. There’s also plenty of fresh fruit. Here’s tonight’s dinner. I love that it’s buffet style. And to finish, the classic “Sunflower Curry.” With a black pork cutlet on top. I went with the mixed chicken rice. The curry is rich with beef—so tasty. Feeling full and happy, I head to the game corner. There are arcade machines I’ve never seen before—it looks fun. The game area is open 24 hours, so you can even stay up all night. This time, I’m playing a game where you have to catch 20 balls. Whoa! That escalated quickly! And just like that, it’s over. Didn’t reach my target of 20… Couldn’t get it at all… sigh. Even though I know I won’t win, I can’t help but play again. Tonight, the Akashi Kaikyō Bridge is lit up in different colors than usual. It’s in Myaku-Myaku colors! Maybe lights everywhere are celebrating the final day of Expo Osaka. Expo Osaka… it’s really over. It’s a little sad, but now we can look forward to the upcoming integrated resort project. October 14th is Winnie the Pooh Day. I came to the shop on the same floor as the game area. There are so many items that they can’t all fit on the shelves. They’re still selling a few Expo Osaka souvenirs. Just browsing is fun enough. Besides souvenirs, there are snacks, drinks, and ice cream. When it comes to Sunflower, their original goods are a must-buy. An exclusive Sunflower Gold umbrella marker. And I bought their new eco bag too. Tonight there’s a live magic show on board. Sunflower often hosts events and entertainment at sea. There are lots of families on board tonight, with many kids. The children are so free-spirited. The magician almost looks like a kindergarten teacher. Back in my room—it’s time for a quick souvenir haul. First, the ship’s commemorative stamp—called a “Goshuin of the Sea.” There was even an Expo Osaka version, so I got that too. My favorite is this mascot hand towel. It stretches out when you pull it! The design is just too cute. Sunflower also holds seasonal events for kids. On the walls are drawings of “Sunflower” made by children—so heart-warming. There’s also a lounge area called the “Salon,” something you don’t see on most ferries. Here, you can watch TV or enjoy a meal. Expo Osaka ended with a 280 billion-yen surplus! The water dispensers offer three temperatures—cold, hot, and room temperature. Perfect for taking medicine or making instant noodles. The scenic bath is open until 10 p.m. The dressing room and bath area are both spacious and relaxing. This photo is from Google Maps. Inside the restroom, there’s a shower room available 24 hours a day. Shampoo, conditioner, and body soap are all provided. And now, back to my room. The upper bunk isn’t recommended for children, for safety reasons. But since I’m an adult, I’ll take the upper bunk! Climbing up is a bit tough, but fun. It feels like I’ve grown taller. The bed comes with a pillow, a small shelf, and a fluorescent lamp. There’s no power outlet on the upper bunk. A blanket and sheets are also provided. Even though I’m alone, I’ll close the curtain anyway. Good night… I woke up too early. The ferry has already traveled far and is now sailing near Ehime. Everyone’s still asleep. Huh? What’s that— a UFO? Oh, it’s a cruise ship! So dreamy and beautiful. I’ll relax a bit on board before breakfast. Let’s grab a morning coffee from the vending machine. There are machines from many brands—it’s fun to look at them all. Alcohol sales end at 11 p.m. “Milk coffee for adults.” Black coffee… still a bit too strong for me. Even as I sip my coffee absentmindedly, the ship quietly keeps moving. I’m bored—maybe I’ll visit the game corner again. Oh! Looks like someone already won a prize. There’s one prize that looks almost within reach—let’s try for it. Got it in just three tries! (Morning play is the best!) There’s a long line for breakfast. The breakfast buffet costs just 700 yen. With this many dishes, 700 yen is such a bargain—you should definitely try it. Grilled mackerel, sausage, stir-fried burdock root, and leafy greens. Pickled plum, takuan, and Sunflower’s special fried fish cake. French fries and scrambled eggs. Besides rice and curry, they also serve porridge in the morning. Bread lovers will be happy too. So here’s the luxurious 700-yen breakfast. It’s getting brighter outside. The ferry is about to dock at Oita Port. Huh? That’s a hovercraft! Wow, that’s so cool! At 6:20 a.m., we arrive at Oita Port right on schedule. The 12-hour journey felt long but went by in a flash. Oh no, I got so into listening to the Sunflower song that I missed my disembarkation time! Oops! The bus has already left! Oh well, it’s fine. Where should I go next? Even after disembarking, I can still hear the Sunflower song… Thank you so much for watching until the end.

Great sharing. I love it once again. Thanks. 👍👍👍😍😍😍
❤

Am I the only one tired of slots in Japanese cruise ships? I think they should add racing or shooting arcade games.
