4世紀末から5世紀初めに造られた、全長90ｍの前方後円墳です。
明治25年に地元の少年が発見し、現在、国史跡に指定され、古墳公園としても整備されています。
この古墳からは、古墳出土のものとしては日本一大きい鏡（単頭双胴怪獣鏡）が発掘され、現在は東京国立博物館に納められています。併設する茶臼山古墳資料館には、発掘品や古墳の解説パネル、鏡のレプリカなども展示。
また、天候が良ければ古墳の頂上から柳井市街地～四国までを一望できます。
柳井有数の史跡として知られる茶臼山古墳は、古墳公園として整備された際に桜を植樹し、春になると美しいソメイヨシノの花を見ることができます。
古墳の歴史に思いをはせながら、美しい桜と柳井の町並みを一望できる絶景は、ここでしか味わえない感動を与えてくれます
This 90m-long keyhole-shaped tumulus was built between the end of the 4th century and the beginning of the 5th century.
It was discovered by a local boy in 1892, and is now designated as a national historic site and has been developed as a tumulus park.
The largest mirror in Japan (a single-headed, double-hulled monster mirror) was excavated from this tumulus, and is currently housed at the Tokyo National Museum. The adjacent Chausuyama Tumulus Museum displays excavated items, explanatory panels about the tumulus, and a replica of the mirror.
Additionally, if the weather is good, you can get a panoramic view of Yanai city and even Shikoku from the top of the tumulus.
Known as one of Yanai’s most prominent historic sites, Chausuyama Tumulus was planted with cherry trees when it was developed into a tumulus park, and in spring you can see beautiful Somei-Yoshino cherry blossoms.
While thinking about the history of the ancient tomb, you can enjoy the beautiful cherry blossoms and the magnificent view of Yanai townscape, which will leave you with a feeling of awe that can only be experienced here.
