Let me take you on a journey to one of the most
sacred places in Portugal, Fatima. A place where faith, mystery, and miracles intertwine to create
an extraordinary story that continues to captivate millions of people worldwide. It all began on
a seemingly ordinary spring day in 1917 in a small Portuguese town that would soon become
known across the globe. Three young shepherds, Lutia Santos and her cousins, Francisco and
Jacinta Marto, were tending to their sheep in the fields of Kovaderia when something remarkable
happened. They witnessed what they described as a vision of the Virgin Mary appearing to them as a
lady brighter than the sun. The lady didn’t just appear once. She continued to visit these children
on the 13th of each month from May to October. During these appearances, she shared three
secrets with the children and called for prayer, penance, and devotion. Word spread quickly
throughout Portugal. And by the time of the final apparition in October, around 70,000 people
had gathered to witness what would become known as the miracle of the sun. What makes this story
even more compelling is the transformation of Fatima from a humble village to one of the world’s
most important Catholic pilgrimage sites. Today, millions of visitors from all corners of the
earth make their way to the sanctuary of Fatima where the basilica stands as a testament to these
miraculous events. Speaking of visiting Fatima, let me share the best ways to get there. The
most convenient option is to take a train or bus from Lisbon, which is about 90 minutes away.
If you’re driving, the A1 motorway makes for an easy journey. Many visitors also choose to join
organized tours from major Portuguese cities, which often include historical context
and visits to nearby attractions. The best time to visit is during the major
pilgrimages on May 13th and October 13th, marking the first and last apparitions. However,
be prepared for crowds during these dates. The sanctuary can welcome up to a million pilgrims
at once. If you prefer a more peaceful experience, consider visiting during off- peak times. Once
you’re there, take time to explore the stunning basilas, the chapel of the apparitions built on
the exact spot where the Virgin Mary appeared, and the touching monuments to the three young
shepherds. Many visitors also participate in the evening candlelight processions, creating
a magical atmosphere that stays with you long after you’ve left, whether you’re religious
or not. Fatima’s story of faith, innocence, and divine intervention continues to
move people from all walks of life. It’s a place where the extraordinary touched the
ordinary, leaving an indelible mark on history that still resonates with visitors today. If
