We drove across dunes in massive trucks, an adventure in itself. The thrill of navigating the shifting sands, feeling the power of the vehicle beneath you, is an experience that gets your adrenaline pumping. The sand is fine and soft, like powder. It slips through your fingers like time itself, each grain a tiny piece of the vast history of this ancient land. Our guide explained how the desert constantly changes, reshaped by the wind. It’s a celestial display that humbles you, reminding you of the vastness of the universe and our small place within it. We camped in a traditional Berber tent, enjoying incredible hospitality. The warmth of the Berber people, their stories and their music added a rich layer to our desert experience. Eating under the stars was like a movie scene. The food, the laughter, the crackling of the fire,all under a sky filled with stars, made for an unforgettable evening. The desert isn’t just a landscape, it’s a culture and a way of life. Our destination is Tassilii Naja National Park, a remote and breathtaking expanse in southeastern Algeria, where the desert hides secrets millions of years old. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is famous for its bizarre, almost alien sandstone formations, towering pillars, arches and mushroom-shaped rocks carved by wind and time. Walking among these ancient rocks, you feel as if you’ve stepped onto another planet. The silence is profound, broken only by the crunch of your boots on the sand. But the real wonder lies hidden on the stone walls, thousands of prehistoric paintings and engravings, some over 10,000 years old, created by people who lived here long before the desert took over. These artworks are like a history book written in stone, revealing a time when the Sahara was not a barren wasteland, but a thriving savannah teeming with life. The ancient artists painted giraffes, elephants, cattle, and even people swimming, scenes that show us a world so different from today’s harsh desert. These images are proof that this now arid landscape was once a lush paradise, filled with rivers, grasslands and abundant wildlife. Reaching these hidden art galleries is an adventure in itself. Visiting Tasili Naja is like travelling back in time. Every rock, every painting tells a story about our planet’s ancient past and the people who once called this place home. Next, we’re leaving the desert behind for something completely different, so get ready for the next adventure. After days of travelling through endless sand dunes and rugged rocky landscapes, we finally made our way to Algeria’s breathtaking Mediterranean coastline. The contrast is absolutely striking. One moment you’re surrounded by the golden hues of the desert and the next,you’re greeted by the sparkling blue of the sea. The water here is a stunning turquoise blue, so clear and vibrant it almost looks unreal, like something straight out of the Caribbean or a tropical paradise. The sunlight dances on the surface, creating shimmering patterns that are mesmerizing to watch. Our journey began in Algiers, the capital city, where you can see a fascinating blend of French colonial architecture and the winding alleys of traditional kasbars. The city itself is perched right on the edge of the sea, offering incredible views at every turn. We ventured out to find hidden gems and stumbled upon Zaralda Plage, a secluded cove with powdery white sand and water so clear you can see every shell and pebble beneath your feet. It’s the perfect spot for a peaceful swim, or just to relax and soak in the scenery. The Algerian coastline is full of surprises, with dramatic cliffs and unique rock formations that rise sharply from the sea. These rugged landscapes make for some of the most photogenic spots along the entire Mediterranean. We couldn’t resist exploring the mysterious sea caves, where beams of sunlight filter through openings and make the water inside glow an electric blue. It’s like stepping into another world, hidden away from the crowds. Further east, near Gigel, the coastline becomes even wilder and more untouched. This area is part of Taza National Park,A protected region where nature thrives and the beaches remain pristine and uncrowded. We hiked along coastal trails that wind along the cliffs, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the endless blue sea below. Every step reveals a new perspective, and the fresh sea breeze is invigorating. Along the way, we discovered charming fishing villages where life moves at a slower pace. Here, fishermen grill their daily catch right by the water, and the aroma of fresh seafood fills the air. It’s a taste of authentic Algerian coastal life. What’s truly special about the Algerian Mediterranean coast is how untouched and uncrowded it feels. It’s a hidden gem, offering natural beauty and tranquility that’s hard to find elsewhere in the Mediterranean. Standing here, it’s hard to believe that just a few hours away lies the vast Sahara Desert. The contrast between the endless sand and the vibrant coastline makes Algeria feel like two completely different countries in one. Next, our adventure continues as we leave the coast behind and head back toward the desert, this time to explore the majestic mountains that rise up from the sands. Stay tuned for more incredible landscapes. Welcome to the Hoga Mountains, jagged peaks rising from the Sahara. The landscape is stark and powerful, like another planet. Mount Tahat is Algeria’s tallest mountain, with dark volcanic rock. The Asakram Plateau offers a legendary view of volcanic peaks. We camped to catch the stunning sunset and sunrise. The silence and beauty are indescribable. The Tuareg people, masters of this environment, shared their stories with us. Exploring the Hoga Mountains is a remote adventure. It’s a landscape of drama and power full of breathtaking views. Now get ready for another huge change of scenery. We’re heading to Algeria’s lush Kabali region, a green paradise. It’s a mountainous area with rolling hills, dense forests and deep valleys. The Djurjura National Park is especially beautiful. Kabali villages are charming, perched on hilltops with stone houses. The Cabal Berbers have a rich culture, known for their handicrafts. We visited a local market with vibrant colors and patterns. The region has hidden waterfalls like the Kafrida Falls. The landscape is fertile with olive groves and fig trees. Kabali was a complete surprise, showing another face of Algeria. It’s a place of natural beauty, rich culture, and charming villages. Next, we’re heading back to the sand, but to unique dunes. Welcome to Timimun, home of the red sand dunes. The sand here is a deep, rich reddish orange like Mars. Timimun is a red oasis, with buildings made from red mud brick. The Grand Erg Oriental is a sea of red dunes. At sunset, the sand glows with fiery red light. The ancient Fogara’s underground channels bring life to the Oasis. Timimun’s culture blends Arab, Berber and Sub-Saharan influences. We experienced a local festival with music and dancing. The Sebka, a massive salt flat, creates bizarre mirages. Timimun is a must-see destination, firing up the imagination. The red dunes and unique culture make it unforgettable. We have one final stop, and it’s one of the most dramatic. Our final location is Goufy Canyon, the Algerian Grand Canyon. It’s a massive canyon with towering cliffs and breathtaking views. The contrast between the canyon walls and the lush valley is stunning. Ancient Berber villages are carved into the cliffs. We hiked down to explore these cliffside dwellings. The views from their windows would have been the canyon itself. The river creates a beautiful oasis with date palms and fruit trees. Goufy Canyon combines epic scalelushness, and incredible history. It’s a place of awe-inspiring beauty and deep history. It perfectly sums up Algeria’s hidden gems and landscapes. And that’s it. Seven breathtaking landscapes in Algeria.
