【50周年半額フェリー】サンフラワー大阪→鹿児島便が激混み!それでも最高の15時間の船旅だった。|Japanese ferry trip

Today’s Digest: Today’s trip starts at Trade Center-mae Station in Osaka. And today, I’m at the Osaka Nanko Cosmo Ferry Terminal to board a special ferry. I love the atmosphere at the ATC (Asia-Pacific Trade Center). And, of course, I’m bringing my miniature Shiba Inu, Puri, along on the ferry trip. She’s always full of energy. It seems like they’re eager to board the Sunflower Ferry . The ferry in sight is bound for Beppu. Our route today is a 15-hour voyage from Osaka to Shibushi in Kagoshima. Today, the Sunflower Ferry is celebrating its 50th anniversary with a half-price festival campaign. Two ferries, one bound for Beppu and one bound for Kagoshima, are docked at Osaka Nanko. For the Kagoshima ferry, I have to go to Terminal 2. There were quite a few people at the bus stop, so it looks like this ferry trip will be a challenge. The free bus was packed. This is the Sunflower Ferry Satsuma. Gross tonnage: 13,659 tons, Length: 192m, Sea Speed: 23 knots (45km), Passenger Capacity: 639. Let’s complete the boarding procedures before it gets too crowded. All rooms were sold out today. The embarkation date is Tuesday, September 30, 2025. The terminal was busier than I’ve ever seen it. I was issued a QR code, which also serves as my room key. It seems I managed to board before the ship got too crowded . My luggage is heavy, so I head straight to my room. It looks like the pet room is at the back and will be a difficult journey. There’s a guest waiting for me at the arrival room , but it’s very spacious and luxurious. There are a lot of events today, so I’ll start the room tour right away. It would be nice to have Lysol. Amenities included towels, a toothbrush set, and pajamas. There are plenty of hangers in the closet. The fluffy, extra-thick slippers are a welcome sight. There’s also a wide selection of pet supplies. The TV mainly broadcasts satellite broadcasts. There are two single beds, but the room can accommodate up to four people. There is also a chair and table in the center of the room. The sofas on both sides appear to double as beds. There is a tea set in the corner of the room. In addition to coffee, tea, and green tea, they also offer sunflower cookies, which is nice. There are also glasses and a kettle , so you can boil water. There were two complimentary bottles of water in the refrigerator. The pet room is equipped with a toilet and shower room. Shampoo, body soap, and other amenities are provided in the shower room. Towels and a nice toilet. The bathroom, including the sink, is clean and well-equipped. The room is air-conditioned, making it very comfortable. There are more than enough outlets for air purifiers, so you’ll have no trouble charging them. There is also a window with an ocean view. Puri the Shiba Inu during a room tour. I received a 50th anniversary commemorative novelty item: an original cotton drawstring bag and a commemorative boarding pass. Since the route passes along the Pacific coast, I’ll take some motion sickness medicine just in case. I feel this Aneron is the most effective. Puri doesn’t seem to get seasick. Finally, the long-awaited dinner time arrived. Puri’s special skill is eating quickly. He’s also known as Japan’s most greedy dog. By the way, it was so crowded that we didn’t even discuss money. The room cost ¥12,780, and the pet room fee ¥8,700, for a total of ¥21,480 ($143.12). It was half price for the 50th anniversary, so it felt like a great deal. However, the ship was more packed than I’ve ever experienced. The Sunflower Ferry’s open-air space is truly beautiful. I thought about going for dinner, but there was a huge traffic jam. There seemed to be about 100 people waiting, so I’ll wait and see. (Be careful of the volume!) The gong, which sounds 15 minutes before departure, was about to ring. The gong is a meaningful tradition, both as a signal to depart and to drive away any evil spirits that may have boarded the ship. The gong is also a legal piece of equipment used as an acoustic signal in poor visibility or in distress, and is used to pray for safety. Applause . Let’s go see the departure. However, it was so crowded that trucks and passengers hadn’t yet boarded. It looks like the departure will be delayed by about 15 minutes. Finally, the gangway was retracted. The rope connecting the ship to the port was also removed. The hawser was being reeled in. I really enjoy watching this ship’s hawser being reeled in. There were a lot of people on the deck, but I managed to get a good spot. Many staff members were waving. We departed about 15 minutes late, around 6:10 PM. Thank you as always for a safe voyage. Goodbye, Osaka. The night view of Osaka is so stylish and beautiful. From what I heard from the others, those lights seem to be the Osaka Expo site. I was feeling hungry, so I decided to join the queue. The restaurant was full. We arrived at the area where we could purchase meal tickets. The all-you-can-eat option was ¥2,000 ($13.33) per adult, which was quite affordable. Credit cards are also accepted. The 50th anniversary special menu featured Kagoshima Kuroge Wagyu roast beef. The turnover was fast, so after about a 15-minute wait, our turn finally arrived. Once we were seated, we decided to focus on the Kuroge Wagyu. The restaurant was buffet-style, with a wide selection of dishes. We had Kagoshima Kuroge Pork penne salad, Tosa-ni bamboo shoots, colorful vinegared cabbage, and Nanban-zuke mackerel. We also had yakisoba noodles, hamburger steak with teriyaki sauce, braised pork, and nikujaga (meat and potato stew). We also had minced meat croquettes, French fries, and oden. This was the main course: “Kagoshima Kuroge Wagyu roast beef.” The salad bar was also extensive, making it suitable for health-conscious eaters. We also had rice, mixed rice, miso soup, curry, and ice cream, as well as cake for dessert. Cakes include mango rare cake, chocolate cake, strawberry shortcake, and more. Eat as much as you like of whatever you like. I wonder why I crave fish when I’m on the ocean? I absolutely love braised pork, so I always have that. Fried foods are also a must-try. This is my dinner for today. I tried to keep it balanced. When I think of Sunflower, curry is the best. It’s a very rich curry. And there was also plenty of roast beef sashimi, made with Ishihara Beef, a black Japanese beef from Kagoshima Prefecture, as part of today’s special menu . Eating sashimi on the ocean is the best. I ate a lot of meat, too. I ate a lot of vegetable salads , a lot of fried foods, a lot of fish, and a lot of rice . I always end up too full for sweets, so I had dessert first. Chocolate cake, shortcake, mango cake, ice cream, and a second dessert. I also ate a lot of fruit. To finish off the day, I had sunflower curry. I also ate about five slices of black Japanese beef. Craft beer was also available for purchase. I bought a bell pepper flavored beer. They also had kabosu and komatsuna flavors, but the bell pepper flavor had the biggest impact. It’s a pitch-black beer, already reminiscent of bell peppers. It smells and tastes like bell peppers, so it’s probably not for people who don’t like bell peppers. Bell peppers are even listed in the ingredients. Puri loves bell peppers, but she can’t drink beer. There are also many onboard events today. First up is a projection mapping. Jellyfish, sea turtles, whale sharks , and even a ferocious shark . Osaka Expo? “The Magnificent Face-Changing,” a traditional Chinese performance . “The Magnificent Face-Changing” is a performance from the traditional Chinese art of Sichuan Opera. This secret performance involves the performer covering their face with a fan or their hand, and then changing masks one after another . The Asia Performance Theater was held to commemorate the 50th anniversary. Magician Ukiyo Stromboli also performed a trick known as the Magic of Card Teleportation. A card appeared from a plastic bottle. I had no idea how this trick worked. It was very interesting, but how did it work? I had no idea. It was a 30-minute event, but it was very satisfying. There was also a costume for dogs, so I tried it out. We ended up with a cute Captain. This is the back of a Shiba Inu’s head. My dog went to the dog run for some post-meal exercise. Apparently, he doesn’t like the dog run at night. We started our shipboard tour. The Pet Room is at the end of the 7th floor, so we started there. Pets aren’t allowed in the pet room. The laundry room was at the back of the 7th floor. There were three washing machines, and a 30-minute dryer was ¥100 ($0.67) and a full load was ¥300 ($2.00). There was a large public bath on the 7th floor, but most of the other facilities were concentrated on the 6th floor. Photography wasn’t allowed in the observation public bath, so I thought I’d include a photo, but I forgot. You can also see how busy the baths are. Free lockers are very convenient. There’s a vending machine corner. With all that, you’ll never run out of drinks. There was a standard ice cream vending machine. There were also plenty of beer and alcohol vending machines. There’s Asahi and Kirin. Other than the women’s and men’s observation baths, there’s nothing else to see. Let’s go down to the 6th floor. Unfortunately, the information center and shops are closed at 9 p.m. It’s hard to believe how busy it was just moments ago, but now there are fewer people. The kids’ room also looks deserted. Dolls are lying around, tired from playing. The game corner is open 24 hours a day. It’s deserted, too. The main attraction is crane games where you can win prizes. I can hear an alarm ringing from somewhere. There are also a few standard slot machines. An alarm is ringing from this crane game. Let’s leave it alone. The restaurant is also closed. There’s also a vending machine corner on the 6th floor. There’s one crane game, a Kirin vending machine, and an Asahi vending machine. There’s also a wide variety of juice, tea, and water. There’s a cup ramen vending machine, which is a must-have on ships. For some reason, they have ice cream, which I crave. There’s also a full-fledged coffee machine. Smoking is prohibited outside of the smoking room. Before I knew it, the night lights had been turned on, but let’s take a look at the atrium space one last time. Where are we sailing now? We’re still off the coast of Wakayama. The 8th floor is home to luxury rooms like suites and an observation deck. Let’s take a walk down the long corridor. There’s a kitchen. There’s an ice maker, water heater, and microwave, but no water dispenser. This means there’s no problem with bringing cup ramen or packed lunches. All rooms were fully booked, and there seemed to be no cancellations on the day. It’s rare for all rooms to be full. (11:00 p.m.) It’s getting late, so I brush my teeth and head to bed. The public bath is crowded, so I take a shower in my room. Good night , good morning . She wants breakfast early. I’ll feed her before she breaks my camera. I’ve never seen her lack an appetite. More importantly, I overslept and missed the sunrise. It was nice weather, but with a lot of clouds, I probably wouldn’t have been able to capture it. The wind was strong, but the waves were calm, and the boat didn’t rock too much. I forgot to take a picture of the funnel. I think I can probably see Miyazaki. If I’m wrong, please let me know in the comments. Yesterday, I visited the reception and shop, which were closed. The shop sells a wide variety of souvenirs, daily necessities, and food. I’ve been curious about this for a while, and while it looks like cigarettes at first glance, it’s not. It ‘s a tea box, like Kagoshima tea. Here, a wide selection of Kagoshima souvenirs are lined up. They were selling sweets similar to Hokkaido’s Shiroi Koibito. If you forget to buy souvenirs, you can buy them on the ferry, so you’ll be fine. Here, Osaka souvenirs are lined up. Where are the 551 Horai pork buns? Where is the funny lover? Osaka’s “kotekote” souvenirs have unique names and packaging, and are inspired by B-grade gourmet foods like takoyaki. Here, you can find souvenirs featuring Myaku Myaku, the official mascot of the Osaka-Kansai Expo. There’s also a wide selection of Osaka and Kansai souvenirs. My favorite 551 Horai pork buns weren’t available. They also have food items like cup ramen and bread, so it’s a great option for those looking to save money. There’s a wide selection of snacks and snacks, so you can even host a party. Beer, wine, highballs, sake, and shochu are also available. There’s also a wide selection of tea, water, and juice, and there are plenty of shops and vending machines on board. The ferry’s “Sokosokokatai Ice Cream,” unlike the Shinkansen’s “Sugoikatai Ice Cream,” is also appealing. The Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Sunflower (commonly known as the Sunflower Ferry) offers a wide variety of original goods, perfect for commemorating your trip or as a souvenir. How about the Sunflower Curry I had at the restaurant? It’s not cheap at ¥600 ($3.99), but I’m sure it’s delicious. I decided to check out the restaurant’s breakfast. Breakfast is inexpensive, but I was shocked to see it was fully booked. Takeout seems to be available, but I’m not sure what to do. I returned to the shop. There was also a Mifune seal. The Sunflower Ferry’s original goods include some unique and interesting items. I decided to have that for breakfast. Kagoshima’s Lover ¥1,460 ($9.70) I was interested in Miyaku Myaku Manju and Osaka Manpuku, but I had something I wanted to eat in Kagoshima, so I held off. I love the gentle flavor of Sunflower Ferry’s original mineral water. ¥130 ($0.86) I’ll open it right away and have it for breakfast. I think it means “Wazee Koi Jatt (I really love it).” I think the contents are probably the same as Hokkaido’s Shiroi Koibito, but what do you think? It looks exactly the same. It’s inspired by Hokkaido’s famous “Shiroi Koibito” sweets, and the flavor is the classic langue de chat . Water is good, but coffee or tea would go better with it. It’s some kind of lighthouse. If you know, please let me know in the comments. Just before disembarking, I noticed a puzzle game on board. It’s only about 8:00 AM, but we’re already near Shibushi in Kagoshima. The 15 hours flew by. It seems like a morning walk is best outdoors after all. We arrived at Shibushi Port in Kagoshima at 8:55 AM, right on schedule. I didn’t notice the boat dock and missed the opportunity to take a photo. The disembarkation gate was incredibly crowded. The power of half-price discounts is truly amazing. I couldn’t miss out on photographing the Shibushi Port specialties. Thank you, Shibushi City, Shibushi Town, Shibushi, for safely delivering us. The free shuttle bus to Kagoshima Chuo Station was also jammed. Farewell, sunflowers. Sakurajima? We arrived at Kagoshima Chuo Station after two hours. Puri is finally free. We’ve arrived at the Sakurajima Ferry Terminal. We’ll take a ferry to Sakurajima. I was surprised by how large the ship was. Sakurajima is also popular with foreign tourists. With frequent and short trips, it’s an essential means of transportation for locals and tourists alike. We began our tour of the ship and found a sandwich vending machine. It was a 15-minute boat ride, but there were also drink vending machines. Since we were still waiting to depart, the shop was closed. Our main goal, Yabukin Udon, wasn’t open yet either. They were currently stocking up. Let’s head upstairs. The fourth floor is primarily used as an open deck space where you can feel the breeze and enjoy the scenery. We went even higher. From the observation deck, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the majestic Sakurajima and Kinko Bay. The shop is now open. Yabukin Udon is also now open. Yabukin Udon starts at ¥500 (from $3.32). It looks like I’ll finally be able to try my long-awaited Yabukin Udon. I ordered the most standard Yabukin Udon for ¥500 ($3.32). The soup broth was simple and delicious. Kagoshima’s satsumaage . It looks like the ferry will be leaving just as we leave. The departure of the Sakurajima Ferry is characterized by its unique energy and smooth movement, blending seamlessly into the everyday scenery. Before we knew it, we’d arrived. This maritime attraction, a high-speed transition between the ordinary and the extraordinary, also boasts another specialty: Sakurajima Curry, priced at ¥1,530 ($10.16). Located inside the terminal on the Sakurajima side, Minato Cafe features a unique presentation inspired by the volcanic ash that accumulates after Sakurajima eruptions. Not only is it visually striking, but the flavor is also authentic and delicious. Now we’ve landed on Sakurajima. I’m exhausted. We’ve arrived at the Yunohira Observatory, offering the most beautiful views on Sakurajima. It’s the highest point accessible to the public. Our final stop on this trip is Ramen Koganta, rumored to be the best in Kagoshima. This long-loved ramen restaurant is popular with locals and tourists alike. Its traditional, simple, and light pork bone-based soup is delicious. Many people also ordered miso ramen and fried rice. The noodles, which are slightly thick and have a soft texture, absorbed the soup well and spread gently in the mouth. This is the end of this article. Thank you very much for watching until the end.
