Departure Mt. Mizugaki rises 2,230m above sea level
in Hokuto City, Yamanashi.
It’s part of the Okuchichibu Mountains
within Chichibu-Tama National Park. The mountain is composed entirely of
biotite granite, creating its jagged,
dramatic rock formations. Listed among Japan’s 100 Famous Mountains,
Fukada Kyūya described it as
“a forest of conifers sprouting massive rocks.” It’s dotted with giant boulders
and known as a popular climbing spot. The route is 9.7 km with 993 m ascent
and 987 m descent.
Estimated time: 6 hours 37 minutes.
Difficulty rating: Hard (Course Index 25). Those rock peaks look incredible Looks kind of like our Osteria camper’s pattern It really does There are three main peaks Mt. Mizugaki is said to be full of
huge and oddly shaped rocks Really? Even that one over there looks
like it could tumble down any second This Montbell jacket is seriously great Totally We’ve tried lots of brands,
but Montbell always wins It’s breathable, quick-drying,
and most of all—so comfortable That was quite a forest road Yeah, seriously Can’t believe cars can drive this far in Crazy, right? No way without a 4WD Yeah, impossible Do people come here to climb too? Probably There are so many big rocks here Kinda dangerous Loose gravel like this is super slippery Let’s go carefully Maybe we can shortcut on the way back Absolutely not, don’t even try it So thankful for the pink tape markers Seriously I would’ve been lost without them According to the map, it’s this way though Let’s take a little detour Now it’s an actual trail We’d be lost without YAMAP or something Totally So grateful for it For real It works by GPS even with no signal That’s amazing Whoa… That’s insane So people actually climb these, huh? Yeah, looks like it Those folks ahead probably left the trail
to climb this I could never—climbing’s too scary for me Further ahead there’s a beautiful valley So refreshing! Is it that good? Looks drinkable I kinda wanna drink it If it’s safe, I’d love to Want a pickled plum? Deep in the 100 Famous Mountains appears… The Umeboshi Lady! The Pickled Plum Granny has arrived! Eat the plum! Thank you! So good This is seriously delicious Highly recommend The trail’s pretty confusing here Yeah, it’s complicated We really have to follow the pink tape These trail tapes really save us Hey, look at this It says “Cooler Rock” It says cold air blows out from underneath Whoa, it’s cool! So refreshing! This really is the “Cooler Rock” The trees are actually holding it up Nature is full of surprises So mysterious Almost there I can finally see the sky getting closer It’s really close now Just a little more to go! Ryoko, you’re crushing it today! Amazing! You’ve seriously built up stamina Yeah, you’ve definitely gotten stronger Ten more minutes to the summit The sky feels so close You’re right You can almost see it from here This trail leads to the mountain lodge route Ah, I see Let’s save the view for later Good idea It’s gonna be amazing There are lots of chain sections near the top,
so we keep climbing carefully There it is—the summit! We made it! 2,230 meters Another of the 100 Famous Mountains My legs are shaking like crazy I’m so moved What an incredible view That feeling of achievement! This is the best! 10:56 AM
Lunch time Good job on the climb, mountain warriors! I wonder if Pon-chan ramen’s any good? Let’s dig in Delicious Simple flavor But really tasty Apparently it’s been around since 1967 How is it? It hits the spot So good Moments like this make the climb worth it Totally This is what it’s all about How is it? Amazing! Seriously the best When else do you get to eat ramen like this? Dinner prep We’re already back in Yamanashi,
but— This is Nagano-grown Apple Wagyu beef They feed them apples? Apparently, yeah That’s amazing Shinshu beef Looks incredible My mouth’s watering Oh wow It’s feast time The best! That bath felt amazing too Grilled meat time! That fatigue’s gone already It looks insanely good Seriously wow This is what I live for, honestly Sharing some Shinshu beef
with our pup too He’s awake now! The sparkle’s back in his eyes Tastes good, huh? Savor it, okay? Don’t just swallow it! Chew and enjoy it! Good boy Looks amazing! Let’s eat Delicious That’s a total win So good Not greasy at all You’re so extra, haha But yeah, it’s really delicious Let’s do our best on the next mountain too If we can handle this one, we’re doing great We’re basically intermediate now At least in stamina My body’s adapting like crazy lately All that’s left is gaining experience We conquered Mt. Mizugaki! That was a tough one I’m totally wiped out But that sense of achievement was real I actually really liked the summit view Might be the best one yet I’m so happy—another one down! Right? Totally Beautiful Feels so good when these line up As a little reward Only 500 yen? That’s cheap! It was pricier at other stores We bought it at the Mizugakiyama
