📍 Burzaco sorprende: allí nació el Primer Monumento a la Bandera

Welcome to the city of Burzaco, Almirante Brown district, Buenos Aires. I am currently standing in front of the train station, above the public transportation area. A beautiful sunny day, perfect for a stroll. While we enjoy the walk, I will give you details about the location and history of this city. Burzaco is located in the southern part of Greater Buenos Aires, 25 km from the city of Buenos Aires. It borders Malvinas Argentinas by Peteribi Street, Drago and Miguel Diomede Streets; Adrogué by H. Yrigoyen Avenue and JD Perón Avenue; Rafael Calzada by Erezcano and Humberto Primo Avenue; Claypole and Don Orione by República Argentina Street; Ministro Rivadavia by Araujo Street; Longchamps by Araujo Street; Combate Monte Santiago by 6 de Febrero Street; and Monte Grande by Argentina Avenue. According to the 2010 population and housing census, the town of Burzaco has a population of 88,113 (Indec, 2010). It is the most populated city in the district and the 64th nationwide. Burzaco has several sports organizations, the most important of which is the Club Social y Deportivo San Martín, which plays in the Primera B (First Division), the third division of Argentine soccer, which includes clubs directly affiliated with the AFA (Argentine Football Association). It also has the Pucará and San Albano clubs, both members of the Buenos Aires Rugby Union (BBA). The San Martín Cinema was built two blocks from the station in November 1959. It had a capacity for around 900 spectators and was a cultural landmark of the time. Due to the passivity of the municipalities, they gradually abandoned their activities in the late 1980s, finally ending them completely in the 1990s. In 2008, the former Cine San Martín theater became the center it operates today. It had previously been a convention center where the community came to host school and civil society events free of charge. Many high school graduates received their end-of-year medals there, and free workshops were also held for the community. The original parquet floor is preserved, a major effort was made to preserve the original box office from the 1950s, as well as the ticket boxes. The theater was also refurbished to function as such, with new dressing rooms for the actors and new seats. In July 2009, an agreement was signed with INCAA (National Institute of Statistics and Census of Argentina) to convert the already renovated Cine Teatro San Martín into the INCAA km 23 “Graciela Borges” Space, which also had the actress as sponsor at the inauguration. Returning to sports, the Club Independiente de Burzaco, the Social Club, and the Burzaco Fútbol Club also stand out. The club also has a basketball team that competes at the district level. There are also numerous children’s soccer clubs, such as the Pueyrredón Social and Sports Club, the Juan Bautista Alberdi Social and Sports Club, the Burzaco Athletic Sporting Club, and the Arzeno Social and Sports Club, which are part of the ADIAB (Almirante Brown Children’s Sports Association). What other places of interest can we find in the city of Burzaco? In 1916, the Mariano Moreno Library was founded, the first public library in the Almirante Brown district. It is now located in the building that also houses the Cosmopolitan Society and the Municipal Convention and Events Center (a movie theater/cinema operated there for decades, and is currently the location of the INCAA-Cinema Burzaco Space). It features a reading room with large windows that allow abundant natural light and houses 20,000 volumes containing primary, secondary, university, technical, children’s and educational library texts, and a variety of general knowledge works. Book loans are also available at home, the only requirement being to become a member by paying a small monthly fee. Burzaco also has a museum, the Claudio León Sempere Museum, created on August 18, 1985, with contributions from national artists. It is the first open-air museum in the country and the seventh in the world. It features numerous workshops covering different artistic expressions. Quinta Rocca is located at 4200 Espora Avenue, a few meters from the intersection with Monteverde Avenue (Route 4), known as the Steam Roundabout. This beautiful mansion, home to a large grove of trees—impressive eucalyptus trees, among other species— covers several hectares and was acquired in 2007 by the municipality of Almirante Brown, until then led by Mayor Jorge Villaverde and currently by Mariano Cascallares, to build the University of Almirante Brown. a project that is in the hands of its organizing rector, Dr. Raúl Marino. Today, many think that these lands belonged to General Roca, but this is not the case. The surname of the former owners was Rocca (with a double “c”), and they were Genoese immigrants who settled in the city of Buenos Aires and used the estate on weekends. Initially, it was known as Campo Rocca because its extension was larger, covering from (today) 25 de Mayo and Espora streets (on its south side) to Monteverde Avenue (north side), and from Espora Avenue (formerly Belgrano) to the Roca railroad tracks. We are now arriving at the former Parish of the Immaculate Conception of Burzaco. The estate of Don Francisco Burzaco, dated November 27, 1901, donated four plots of land for a public square, a church, and two schools; having fulfilled such provisions with the current plaza, the Church of the Immaculate Conception, School No. 3 Bernardino Rivadavia, having occupied the remaining property with the Municipal Delegation and Civil Registry. The property corresponding to the Church is located at the intersection of E. de Burzaco and 25 de Mayo streets, covering an area of 2,500 square meters. At the end of 1908, the construction of the Temple came to an end, and its inauguration took place on February 2, 1909, Candlemas Day. It has an Italianate architecture inspired by the Romanesque. The temple had, at the time of its inauguration, a single nave 9 meters wide and 20 meters long (the current central nave), and two small enlargements in the form of chapels approximately 1.80 meters deep, in what today constitutes part of the transept; one on the left with the altar of the Virgin of Luján, and at the bottom, in a display case, the Recumbent Christ, and the other, on the right, with the Crucifixion. and Saint John the Evangelist, respectively, to the left and right of the observer. The layout of the primitive Temple was completed by a Sacristy located on the left and a Counter Sacristy located on the right, as one enters the temple, the Presbytery that ended in a circular shape, which is the current one with the aesthetic variations that were made to it; a Baptistery located to the right of the access to the Temple, in the entrance Atrium, measuring approximately 2.50 by 2.50 meters, and a room located to the left of the access to the Temple, also in its current lectern, intended for the wooden staircase that led to the Choir and that covered the entire width of the primitive Temple, with the railing of turned wooden balusters, with a balcony over the nave and, above which the Bell tower rises. We continue our walk and arrive at the point of interest that gives this video its title. A beautiful classic merry-go-round. How many children must have had fun here. Here in Manuel Belgrano Square, on March 25, 1938, the cornerstone was laid that would give rise to the flag monument, which was inaugurated on July 25, 1943, making it the first flag monument in the country (even surpassing the flag monument in Rosario). In August 1937, a neighborhood committee chaired by Lieutenant Colonel Saúl Severo Pardo was formed to build a Flag Monument, some time before June 20 was established as “Flag Day.” Two native inhabitants, its builder, Francisco Blumetti, and the sculptor Claudio León Sempere, were responsible for capturing the tribute that the residents of Burzaco, through their donations, wanted to pay to the hero and our national emblem. Unfortunately, Claudio L. Sempere, its sculptor, did not see its completion, having died on October 15, 1942. The monument is built on a 5-meter rectangular base and is approximately 8 meters high. Its total height is 25 meters, and it is completely clad in Mendoza travertine marble. Its interior is designated for a small temple with a basement of the same dimensions. It is crowned by two bronze condors, striking in their size, nearly two meters. The Chamber of Deputies presented a project to declare it a Historic Monument. Finally, on May 31, 2006, the Chamber of Deputies of the Province of Buenos Aires approved the project presented by the then mayor, Darío Giustozzi, to declare it a Historic Monument. It’s incredible to be here, when all my life I believed that the first and only monument to the flag was the one in the city of Rosario. We continue our tour. Another site of interest is the Monument to the Gaucho of Almirante Brown. It was officially inaugurated on December 12, 1992 on Hipólito Yrigoyen and Quintana Avenues. Thus, the district’s ongoing gratitude to this humble and hardworking man was immortalized, bringing to life an idea captured in the Norberto López Native Concert program. López, along with an important group of honorable men and women of their traditions, underpinned the profound desire to pay homage to and remember with honor the glorious Argentine Gaucho, a key man in the struggles for the independence of our country. The sculpture was made by Mrs. Patricia Simek de Liñan, of international standing, and to the pride of all lovers of our heritage, we would like to highlight that the Almirante Brown Gaucho Monument is the closest to the Federal Capital. It was declared of Municipal Interest by the Deliberative Council and later went beyond the boundaries of the district, also being declared of Provincial Interest by the Chamber of Deputies of the Province of Buenos Aires by Resolution No. 207 of May 13, 1992, whose president at the time, Don Osvaldo Mercuri, donated the National Flag that accompanies the gaucho on its flagpole. What is the history of this magnificent city? After the refoundation of Buenos Aires by Juan de Garay, he distributed land to the soldiers, among them was Francisco Zamora, the first occupant of the “Lomas de Zamora”. He died at the hands of the Querandís. In 1639, Agustín Pérez and Juana de Loyola sold the land 20 km from the Riachuelo, which belonged to Captain Don Pedro de Ibarra, along with a house and ranch, who had bought it from General Sebastián de Orduna. Juana de Loyola, wife of Sebastián de Orduna and later of Agustín Pérez, established one of the first estates in Burzaco. In 1750, the family of Carlos Sandoval occupied the Corimayo park. In 1800, several families settled in the Burzaco area: Francisco Rincón, Pantaleón Poveda, Andrés and Justo Rincón, Agustín Cepeda, Ildefonso Gallegos, Ramón Hunt, and Pablo Fragas. Altolaguirre, the first Argentine agronomist, owned experimental farms with Santiago de Liniers, with whom he conducted research on meat preservation before the English invasions. With Manuel Belgrano and Hipólito Vieytes, he cultivated trees such as hemp, flax, and olives. He also dedicated himself to the cultivation of cereals and the raising of sheep, horses, and cattle. Between 1809 and 1824, sales resulted in the present-day Monte Grande, where Scots brought by the English minister Parish Robertson with the agreement of Bernardino Rivadavia settled. After a time, these families moved to Quilmes, San Vicente, and Chascomús. Another group of families came from English prisoners of the British invasions, who later decided to stay in the country, along with some Germans. In 1815, the Barton family, Englishmen who arrived with the invasions, acquired land from the Avellaneda family, where they established an apricot grove. Jorge Barton married Francisca Etchague and settled in the fields of Quilmes. In 1824, the Loray family, owners of areas under the influence of present-day Burzaco. In 1865, the railroad arrived and a station was established near kilometer 22. The area of influence, due to the railroad, is very large. 1888, at 3:20 a.m. on June 5, the 1888 Río de la Plata earthquake occurred. In 1965, it ceased to be a town on January 27 of that year, when it was declared a city. We continue the tour on the east side of the city.
