Inside Rome’s VITTORIANO – What Tourists Miss | 4K Walking Tour 2025

Hello! I’m Luca and today I’m taking you to discover the Vittoriano, the monument that divides Rome between those who love it and those who hate it. Built between 1885 and 1935, this impressive white Botticino marble complex celebrates the unification of Italy and King Victor Emmanuel II. Here we are at Piazza Venezia, the beating heart of modern Rome. The city’s most important roads start from here. The traffic here is legendary! Look how the Vittoriano dominates the square with its width of 135 meters. This artistic gate is the work of Manfredo Manfredi. Every detail tells the story of the Italian Risorgimento. The symbols here are not random: eagles, fasces and laurel wreaths celebrate the new united Italy. These winged lions by Giuseppe Tonnini are the first great visual impact. They are majestic in their grandeur! They represent the strength and nobility of Italy. From here begins our climb toward national glory. The eternal flame has been burning here since 1921, for over a century. Two carabinieri always stand guard, 24 hours a day. This place represents all the Italian soldiers who fell without a name. A powerful symbol of sacrifice and memory. Fun fact: Romans call it “the typewriter” because of its geometric shape so different from Baroque and Renaissance Rome. Many consider it too monumental, a foreign body in the historic fabric of the city. A criticism that has accompanied the monument since its birth. This is the upper portico with its Corinthian colonnade. Sixteen Botticino marble columns support the structure. Each column is about 15 meters high. Transporting them here was a remarkable engineering feat for the time. Here is Victor Emmanuel II on horseback! Created by Enrico Chiaradia and completed by Emilio Gallori, it is one of the largest equestrian statues in the world. The entire bronze statue weighs 50 tons. Popular legend says that 12 people can comfortably fit inside the horse’s belly! Victor Emmanuel II was the first king of Italy, nicknamed “Father of the Fatherland”. He died in 1878, before this monument was even started. We are now in the right portico. These colonnades perfectly frame the king’s statue creating a theatrical scenery. The neoclassical architecture recalls Roman temples, but with a grandeur typical of the nineteenth century. From the rear terrace you have a spectacular view of the Imperial Forums! This is Rome revealing itself in all its history. This panoramic elevator takes you to the highest terrace in just a few seconds. Get ready for the show! Here we are on the panoramic terrace! A 360-degree view over Rome. On clear days you can see all the way to the Castelli Romani. From up here you understand why Rome is called the “Eternal City”. Every roof, every dome tells a thousand-year-old story. The Quadriga of Liberty by Paolo Bartolini! This winged Nike guides four horses toward conquered freedom. Each quadriga was hoisted up here piece by piece. A remarkable achievement of 1911 engineering. On the other side, the Quadriga of Unity by Carlo Fontana symbolizes Italy finally united after centuries of divisions. Together, the two quadrigas represent the Risorgimento dream: freedom and national unity finally achieved. From the rear terrace opens the view of Piazza del Campidoglio, Michelangelo’s masterpiece from 1538. Above here stands the first nucleus of Rome, the Campidoglio. From sacred hill to the center of modern civic power. The Central Museum of the Risorgimento houses relics and documents of Italian Unity. History comes alive here. From Garibaldi’s uniforms to battle flags, every object tells the story of a people becoming a nation. Subscribe to the channel if you want to discover other hidden treasures of Rome! 3. Great video. I have walked by but not into this monument. Thanks for showing me more about it. I doubt I will ever be back

  4. A mí personalmente me gustó mucho.
