POV: Visiting the Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi ⏱️

Have you wondered where Grand Seiko makes their watches in Japan? Well, it’s not in Tokyo, but all the way up north in Iwate Prefecture in a small town called Shizukishi. This incredible manufacturing facility produces all Grand Seiko’s caliber 9S mechanical movements, while the spring drive and quartz movement are produced elsewhere. Once we step inside the lobby, you get greeted with this incredible open space with displays showing the history of Grand Seiko, the manufacturing process, and the craftsmen and women working here at the facility. Our tour guide explained each display and also got to do some hands-on activities showing the craftsmanship and precision of these watches. Just look how small these parts are. Next, we walked along this path where on the left you see all the craftsmen and women working diligently handmaking all the watches. We couldn’t film that room, but afterwards we ended the tour here where you got to see some Shizuishi limited watches and my favorite SLGW00003 with the most beautiful case back I’ve ever seen. Just a heads up, if you’re planning to visit, make sure to book reservations early because they fill up fast.

  1. But what is very strange is that Seiko doesn’t have independent store where you can get their watches like other brands around the world! If you are not in Japan you have to get it from a dealer not Seiko’s own store! That has to change
