Kalk Bay Walking Tour | Main Road, Hidden Alleys & Gems | Cape Town, South Africa | 4K Binaural
Welcome to a sunny Cape Town! Today we are exploring the coastal neighborhood of Kalk Bay. This fishing village is widely celebrated as one of South Africa’s most charming coastal towns. Our walk begins on the platform of the picturesque Train Station. There are a few Dotted Paths logos hidden in this walk for you to find. On this ocean side of the station is the famous Brass Bell restaurant, sitting right on the water’s edge. This train station opened in 1883 as part of the Southern Line, connecting Cape Town to the False Bay villages. The station was central to Kalk Bay’s growth as a tourist destination. The train made Kalk Bay easy to visit and helped turn it into a busy beachside spot. Back then, people would hop off the train and head straight to the beach, harbour, or Main Road. Now we’re strolling Main Road which is full of cafés, antique shops and small boutiques. The street has evolved through the 20th century, mixing its fishing-village past with a bohemian vibe. Many reputable travel outlets have praised Kalk Bay’s bohemian vibe, seafood scene, galleries and hidden alleys Many antique shops still occupy buildings from the late 1800s. Some of the places on this side get the best of both worlds — Main Road traffic and a sea view. You can also enjoy the sight of the passing train now and then… The town is getting ready for the wave of tourists that will be coming to enjoy Kalk Bay in a few weeks. This is the latest addition to the commercial strip; it will surely be a hit with locals and visitors. The train tracks can sometimes feel like a barrier, making beach access a little trickier. Holy Trinity Chuch has served the local community for generations. While the area’s Anglican worship goes back to the mid-1800s, the existing sandstone church was completed in 1874; its cemetery holds headstones from the late 19th century and reflects the town’s social history. Save Our Seas Foundation funds research, conservation and education projects focused on sharks, rays and their habitats. The Kalk Bay Community Centre has long been a gathering place for locals — hosting cultural events, meetings, and social projects. Right across from the community centre is one of just two spots where you can get easy access down to the beach in Kalk Bay. Dalebrook Tidal Pool was built in the early 1900s as part of Cape Town’s efforts to create safe swimming spots along the False Bay coast. Many of these underpasses were added in the early 20th century when the line was expanded and traffic increased. Here on Main Road you’ll find Artvark, a gallery celebrating South African art and design, and near to it is De Kalkery, a beautifully curated shop featuring local clothing brands alongside gifts and home décor. De Kalkery is housed in one of Kalk Bay’s old heritage buildings on Main Road. Lets explore beyond the Main road… Lets find out what is in this alley… Some of these gems are hidden away from the busy Main road… This shop is a real treasure trove of vintage finds and quirky antiques — every corner holds something unexpected. Another alley hiding secrets, waiting to be discovered… Imagine the scent of these freshly baked treats wafting through the alley …almost calling you in. If you’re into vintage music and the old classics, this spot is not to be missed. Yet another alley for you to explore when you visit Kalk Bay!
