Hello. I’m aiiro70, a middle-aged backpacker. Only the fourth season of my 2025 world trip is left. I post travel videos, and I often get questions about choosing accommodations. I received a request for a video introducing how to choose accommodation, so I thought I would do that. As we choose accommodations for this fourth season, I’d like to share with you the things I usually consider when choosing accommodations. Even now, when I arrive at a lodging, I still feel like things aren’t going as planned. Sometimes I think, “This isn’t how I expected it to be,” but It’s been three years since I started sharing my travels on YouTube, so I think I’ve improved. I think people’s criteria for choosing a lodging and what they value vary greatly. I have five criteria for choosing a lodging. I’ll list them in order of priority. Number one is a private room. Number two is a room with a window, clean, and bright. The third is location. The fourth is staying within or as close to my budget as possible. The fifth is having a private bathroom. Let me explain these five requirements one by one. The first is having a private room. I personally really dislike dormitories. I understand their positive aspects. In addition to saving money, meeting people is appealing, Travel information I get from others is also very useful, but I don’t feel at ease unless I have a private room. I stayed in a dormitory once, four years ago. I stayed in a dormitory in Japan, I couldn’t sleep because of the noise other people made, and I found using lockers inconvenient. They say that earplugs can help you avoid other people’s noises, but I can’t sleep peacefully with earplugs. What’s most important when traveling? I think the most important thing is to travel in good health. To make that a priority, a private room is the most important requirement. Next, it needs to have a window, be clean, and have a bright atmosphere. This depends on the location and budget. Even if I clear the criteria of a private bathroom, I’ll double-check by looking at photos and reviews on Google Maps. In addition to photos on the booking site, it’s important to check the hotel’s location on Google Maps. Check photos and reviews posted by regular users on Google Maps. When I see comments about the dark atmosphere or poor cleaning, I wouldn’t choose that hotel. I wouldn’t choose a windowless room either. The reason is that I enjoy looking at the view from the window. I once met woman who said didn’t mind whether a room had a window or not. Because she is always out and about and don’t get back to her room until night. she said it’s fine if there isn’t a window. That’s probably why I spend so much time in hotels. A window is essential. I feel stuffy without a window. The third factor is location. What I prioritize in terms of location is: Distance to tourist attractions, including art galleries and museums, and distance from departure and arrival points. If you’re arriving and departing by plane, then the departure and arrival point is the airport. If you’re arriving by train and departing by plane, then the departure and arrival point is the airport. The train station and airport are the departure and arrival points. Being close to tourist attractions is the best, I think that’s the most important thing for everyone, but For me, convenient access to the departure and arrival points is important. The reason is that I never take a taxi to get to my accommodation. If a taxi is the only option, I’ll take one. I try to use public transportation whenever possible to get from the departure and arrival points to the hotel. Is it within walking distance of a train or subway station? Also, for example, if I have an early morning flight, is it better to stay near the airport? I consider these things when choosing a hotel. And the fourth condition is that it must be within my budget or as close to it as possible. Budgets vary depending on the location. The accommodation I’m choosing for my fourth season is within my budget of ¥10,000. However, I’ll be staying in Europe for seasons two and three. I was eager to get there, so I booked my accommodation more than six months in advance. This means I’ll be choosing hotels with high prices. Hotels lower their prices if they don’t get any reservations. It’s hard to find a reasonably priced room if you book early. Also, when I was deciding on a place to stay for my third period,
numbers 5 and 4 were reversed. I kept increasing my budget until I found a room with a private bathroom. As a result, for my second and third periods, I increased my budget for a room with a private bathroom to 20,000 yen. That’s why the budgets for the second and third periods are higher than those for the fourth period. As I mentioned earlier, the last point is: A private bathroom is a requirement. This is because the convenience of being able to use the bathroom I take these factors into consideration when deciding on a lodging.
Now, let’s choose a place to stay together. In season 4, I’m planning to go to Malaga, Spain. First, I’ll open Malaga on Google Maps. The places I pinned are places I researched online beforehand. I’ll search for “Malaga sightseeing.” I’ll click on the banner that says “Recommended tourist spots.” I’ll research places I want to go, and then go to the places I want to go. I pinned it in advance. These four are the tourist spots I want to visit right now. I’d like to be near these tourist areas. Next, I’ll check the departure and arrival methods. I’ll arrive by bus and depart by plane. The pinned location is the bus terminal.
The airport isn’t that far away. The travel time is short. The train from the train station next to the bus terminal to the airport takes just 8 minutes. It’s close. It’s best to find one between the bus terminal and a tourist spot. Check your destination and departure/arrival points. I’ll list the hotels here. There are a lot of options like this. Enter a date here and select one person. There are still a lot of options, so I’ll lower my budget. Setting it to 10,000 yen will significantly reduce the price. Maybe this is a dormitory? I wouldn’t choose it. Is this a dormitory too? Maybe it’s not this price? Let’s try a slightly higher budget. Single room with shared bathroom. Like this. Not bad, I guess. The bathroom is shared, but reviews say it’s clean. The room seems small.
Let’s look elsewhere. Is this a dormitory? It’s getting farther this way. If I’m not sure, I’ll check Airbnb. I’d like to find something around here.
Airbnb prices are for two nights. It’s so expensive, I’ll filter by price. Is there house on the train tracks? Spain is full of shared bathrooms Shared bathroom cost 20,000 yen Checking the cleaning fee bill No cleaning fee Maybe closer to the tourist spots? Oh, wait a minute! I found a private bathroom! Wow, this is amazing.
Isn’t this really great? Let’s go here. I’m so anxious, I’m so anxious. At this price… Is there a problem? How far is this from the station? How far is it from the station? 27-minute walk.
Just one bus ride away. Let’s go with this one. I found a great place. Let’s send a reservation request. If the host accepts, they’ll reply, but I waited a day and still didn’t get a reply. So I chose a second room on Airbnb. This room met my four criteria. This is also why I use Airbnb. It’s cheaper than a hotel, and you get closer to the people than at a hotel. I often use Airbnb because it lets me get a deeper understanding of the local area. What did you think? I hope it was helpful. Accommodation is important. It’s a place to rest your body and mind while traveling. Once you’ve decided on a place to stay, your trip is practically beginning. I enjoy revisiting the room I stayed in during my free time. It’s so exciting, isn’t it? Today, I shared how I decide on a place to stay. If you have any tips on how I choose a place to stay or any great deals on booking, please let me know. I look forward to your comments.
See you again!

    Googlemap
