INSIDE TIBET: One Of The Most Restricted Places On Earth (Full Documentary)

[Music] Today we are up bright and early to hop
on the first of the two flight that will take us to one of the hardest places to reach in the
world which is to you excited? I am excited. I’m a bit nervous though because it’s not the easiest
to get to. But that’s not even the problem. I’m worried about the elevation. Yeah, we’re starting
in Thailand in Bangkok. We actually flew in from Koh Samui yesterday. So, we started at sea level
and we’re going to be above 5,000m at certain places in Tibet, but we’re flying into Lhasa,
which is already over 4,000m. I’m already a bit nervous. That’s why today we’re flying to Kunming
instead. Um, it is about 1,800 meters or so. And we’re going to stay two days in Kunming to kind of
adjust our bodies, but we also still have a lot of things we need to do to prepare ourselves before
we actually get to Tibet. Since we have about an hour before boarding, we’re heading to the
lounge to get breakfast. I actually really enjoy flying early. Look at how empty the airport is. It
literally took us about 15 minutes to get through. Check in, security, security, immigration. So
easy. This lounge is big. There’s several mineral lounges in there. It’s a wonderful airport. Can
we check the food selection first? Yeah. Oh, there’s much more on this side. Spaghetti.
Ooh, that looks good. Chicken and rice. Typical breakfast. Sausages, hams, fried eggs, dim sam.
We quickly stopped at the miracle business class lounge earlier and the selection was smaller so we
thought we’d walk here and this one is nice. I was saying on the way we saw three miracle lounges.
Yeah, there’s so many. There’s a lot more. So Tibet has always been on our list to visit.
Um, but because there are certain restrictions, uh, making it not as easy to get to, we kind
of put it off for a while. Like we said, we’ll figure it figure it out later. But we got
such a good opportunity come up for us. We got an email from this company called Eastogo.
They are a travel more like a curated custom tour company. They pretty much do everything for
you in Tibet. So they’ve over the past two years like explored almost every corner of Tibet and
they really focus on like culture and nature and wildlife which is like really our theme. So when
they reached out and said that they would love   to have us on the tour for it’s like a 9-day
tour we got really really excited and they did all the permits for us. We have insurance that
covers over 5,000 meters trekking. Um, and yeah, you need to be with a registered tour company.
But I think we’re pretty lucky. This is not just a registered company, a tour company, but it’s like
a tour company that’s hopefully aligned to our type of travel. But we’re excited to show you like
the following. Well, not so much in this video, but in the next two videos is really about
Tibet. But today’s video is more about getting there. Getting there and preparing ourselves.
Exactly. That’s our plane China Eastern. It’s a small small plane. I guess it’s only a short
2 hours flight. Mhm. But I think it’s going to   be full. There’s so many people here. So,
I just completed the online arrival card, which will save us time because before you have to
fill out the arrival card when you get there and uh give it to immigration. Now, it’s just easy.
You just get a QR code after you submit everything and you just scan it at the machine. Traveling
to China is now so much easier. I think it’s like more than 70 countries have visa free now.
Like 30 days visa free, including Thailand. Yeah. [Music] Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Kunming
Changshui International Airport. Please keep your seat belt fastened until the seat belt sign is
off. Welcome to Kunming, China. So when you come to China, there are a few essential apps that
you need to download before you get here. One of them is DiDi. Yes. But actually before DiDi,
DiDi is a car hailing app. But before DiDi, you also need to make sure you have your payment apps
ready, which is AliPay and WeChat. And we have all those connected. We got it set up yesterday. Um,
but I’m using DiDi now through Alipay. And we’re going to grab a car to get to our hotel. And also
the map. What was the map that they use? Because Google map doesn’t work well here. Yeah. So I
used to use Gaode map, but they’ve actually now made an English version called Amap. So it’s even
better. You can navigate. I don’t have to navigate everything. It is so advanced. So I just called
my DiDi. So it says they are 6 minutes away. There’s like a screen here where you were able to
see the license plate of the car that is parked in specific spots. So, the instructions there tell
you to match the car and then go to the spot. That’s so smart. What’s the number? This one. Oh,
that’s easy. Yay. So convenient. Yeah. [Applause] I guess the system works. I feel good.
No, actually I’m running out of breath. Slow, 1900m now. Be a sloth. Yes. [Music] We are
now in front of our hotel. We’re staying at Ramada Encore by Wyndham. Forgot to ask you how much
was the what’s the ride? What is it? Wyndham. Um, it was actually 87 Yuan for the ride because
there was some traffic so it took took a while like 45-50 minutes. Let’s go in. It’s raining. We
are on the 26th floor. Gave us a free upgrade. So, let’s see how how it looks. Oh, no. You should
have said no. Cuz we don’t have good luck with upgrades. Whenever it’s an upgrade, we’re like,
“Oo.” And they were like, “Oh no, what did we do?”   But okay, they also have a gym and breakfast room
and they also have laundry, I think, on the 21st. Good. But unfortunately, we cannot use the gym
because Oh, true, true. Good point. We’re going up to a very high altitude soon. And they say
the week before, don’t do any intense exercise. You don’t want to deplete your body of oxygen. So,
there’s a few things that we have to follow. So,   no gym, no exercise, lots of water. Yeah. Stay
hydrated. Mhm. Um, don’t shower when we get to the high altitude right away. But why though? I
think something about the hot water and opening like your pores and everything. Something to do
with it. They say eat more carbs. I can do that. Yeah, we we are a bit more cautious about
this now because last year you had a bad experience when we went to Shangri-la and it
was only what 3400 m and I was on oxygen for 2-3 days. Took you weeks to recover from altitude
sickness. Yeah, it was bad. So I’m a bit nervous. Wow, that’s nice. I love it. Let’s open the
curtains. Whoa, we are so high up. Ah, this is so nice. Look at the monitor screen. This is
humongous. Oh, yeah. It’s a big screen. Very good value for $60 a night. Yeah. And I think it’s a
really good location cuz I saw downstairs there’s like restaurants and pharmacies and just like
lots of choices for food and convenience stores. Let’s rest a little bit and then go out and
grab something to eat. Yeah, I’m super hungry. Good job booking this place. I like it. We
actually spend longer at immigration than usual. Mhm. I think it partly was because of
me. um not sure if being able to speak some Chinese is a good or bad thing because then she
wanted to ask me more questions about our trip and just how we’re spending our time here and
of course I was like well we’re going to Tibet and then they’re like oh okay so they wanted
to yeah they had more questions so basically from our experience today is that just make
sure you have all the paperwork that you need um you have your contact of your tour company,
especially phone number or WeChat because they most likely would want to know like the itinerary
know the contact people know exactly you know what where you’re staying. Yeah. Just that it’s
planned out and it’s like legitimate and you have your permit information and stuff. Just make
sure to have more than enough paperwork and you you’ll be okay. Like we didn’t have any problem.
It just took longer than usual. Yeah, there were more questions. But I’m glad they were able to
just keep us together because you would have   been so confused if I was gone for so long. For
sure. For sure. There was some kind of language barrier. Mhm. Yeah. But we’re good now. Well, part
one. Part one. When we actually fly into Tibet, we will see how it is. We’ll see how that will turn
out. Mhm. Fingers crossed. It’s part of the fun, you know. Yeah. You did say it’s the hardest place
to get to. Yeah. Yep. So, what’s the plan? Well, right next to our hotel is a pharmacy here.
So, I think I’m going to try to see if we can   get Diamox, which is like the medicine that
helps you to adjust to high altitude. Um, not sure. There’s a chance that we have to go to
a clinic to get it. We couldn’t get it in Thailand as well. We tried a couple pharmacies there, but
we didn’t have any luck. So, fingers crossed. What’s the verdict? They don’t
sell it over the counter. So,   there is a clinic. She said go straight across
the street on the left. And as foreigners, can you just go in and get it? I believe so. It
would be a common thing, right? People go to Tibet all the time. Well, not Tibet, but Yunnan itself
has really high elevation like altitude. So, um I think it is common for people to
need some sort of medication or go like the natural like the herbal remedy, then
I think we can find something here. Okay,   let’s check out the clinic. And if we can’t find
anything, then we go with the herbal remedy cuz herbal remedy usually takes a little bit longer to
work. Oh, look. Haven’t seen that before. What is that? I have no idea. Crepes look so good. Should
we get some? How much would they be? Beautiful. 33. 33. Awesome. Let’s do
it. That’s really good price. This is one is called August fruit I guess. Is it because it’s seasonal and it’s
sweet? Even these. What are these? Doesn’t smell like anything. You eat the skin? Oh, you just remove the skin to eat. So, he
will just cut off the little mark for us. Like, this is so cool. It’s like eggplant. It
smells like potato. It’s not eggplant. So, this one’s 44 for this. Okay. Those are
more expensive. Okay. I’ll scan to pay. You can 17. This is so much fun. I almost forgot
how quiet China is because everyone is using electric car. You have to be careful. Mhm. You
have to look behind you. This is the clinic here. [Laughter] What you got? I got the herbal
stuff. So, here I’ll show you what it is. It’s actually called rhodiola rosea. It’s like
a traditional herb used in Chinese and Tibetan medicine. It’s called the golden root or the
rose root. So, especially known for altitude   sickness prevention. So, many people in Tibet and
Yunnan use it before going to high altitude. So, it’s similar to what we were looking for, Diamox,
but it’s more natural and it just helps your body adapt to the stress. We got this, babe. Don’t
be scared. Okay, I’ll take care of you. Okay. Anything good here? Noodles. Lots of noodles. Lots
of rice. Chili oil and everything. Yunnan food is usually quite spicy. I want something clean
and comforting like wanton soup. This one says Shanghai wonton. Which one? The white one here.
Yeah, let’s do it. Yeah, this looks good. [Music] Wow. Wow. This would have been enough
for the two of us. Yeah. A lot. So, all of this came to 30 yuan. Very affordable.
I think food is actually very affordable if you think about it. Then our grapes and fruit
was actually very expensive. This is delicious. Tastes almost like instant noodle broth, which I
like. You miss Chinese food? I enjoy Chinese food, but I always find the portions really big.
It’s a hard It’s hard for me to finish them. Very nice. Just what I’m craving. Look, it’s coming out. Oh. Oh, that’s so weird. That is so weird. Is it sweet? It is sweet, but
I can’t tell what. I don’t know   what to compare it with. What the Oh,
what what the heck? What is this? These look like apple slices that have been
fermented apple slices. I don’t know. So, I can’t describe the taste. I
don’t know what it tastes like. Okay,   let me try. Let me try. It’s watery, slightly
sweet, bouncy, and slimy texture. Would you buy it again? No. I like it. Would you like it?
Maybe because it’s not too sweet. That’s why you like it. I guess it’s not too sweet.
It almost tastes like cooked fruit. Like cooked pear or cooked apple or something. Oh,
that’s good comparison. Cooked pear. Yeah,   it it tastes cooked. Oh, what the What?
It’s like cotton in there. That is so weird. Doesn’t look like you like
it. There’s a lot of seeds,   but I don’t think you’re supposed to eat
the seeds, though. You suck off the pulp and you have to spit all the seeds
out. I like the taste of this though,   except there’s too many seeds. How can you enjoy
that? I think you should stick with grapes. That’s gross. You should eat grapes. Good morning from a rainy Kunming. So, we woke up
this morning and decided that we do need to grab a couple more things. So, we looked up the closest
mall to where we were staying and it’s actually a huge mall. So, we’re here. So big. We’re here at
how you’re attendee, which is called Joy World. And they have the Decathlon, which is exactly the
place we need to grab waterproof clothing because this it’s actually rainy season in Tibet. It’s
like late August. It’s rainy season um in Tibet, but also I guess still around here. It’s like the
end of the the summer holidays as well. Oh my god, it’s raining. It’s actually like raining
raining now. We should get You see this? Oh,   yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. This. Look at this. Tim
Hortons. A slice of Canada in China. Too bad we grab a coffee near our hotel first. But uh maybe
we come for a second cup here. Second Cup. It’s also a Canadian franchise. No, but we like Tims.
We go in here. In here first. Yeah. I love coming to malls in different countries as well. You get
to see brands that we never seen before. Mhm. What is it? Hummto. Yeah. It’s not expensive. This
jacket is 169 on sale. Oh, this is something we need. Waterproof. That looks really nice actually.
Like look at this combination. You and I. This is perfect colors for Tibet. That’s really nice. The
only thing I don’t like about it is right here.   It says fashionable something classic 1988. Why
did they have to put that there? And they spelled classic wrong. They No way. Did they? Yeah.
Oh, they did. That’s funny. That’s C L A S I C. [Music] We’re here. Decathlon. This is exciting.
Big one, huh? Very big and not busy. So, we can try everything. Oh, this is nice. This
is nice color. Do we need a walkie-talkie? Cuz we’re going to go to Mount Everest base
camp, right? Yeah. I doubt we’re going to be far apart from each other this.
Do we need Do we need hiking sticks,   too? I did ask. He said no. So, I don’t think
it’s like a trucking trekking kind of trip. Ooh, they have this color though. I always think
this color is really nice. This one’s 599,   though. Get it if it’s the if you like. It looks
very Look, look how happy she is wearing this. I wanted that to be me. That’s a perfect size.
I got one that we can match. Orange is good, too. Yeah, large is perfect for me. I won’t lose
you if you wear this color. And look at all these   hiking boots. So affordable. Do we need this to
look at the yak? Mount Everest and the yak. Yeah, I think we need this one to look at Mount Everest.
Yeah. No, we need this to start a fire. We have a cart full of new gear. This is so nice. I got
a long sleeve. I got a jacket. And I got a pair of sunglasses. You got a jacket. You got what
is this? Oh, pants. Pants. And hiking socks. I got socks and gloves. And you got more socks.
I think it’s a success. Let’s see how much this is. I like going shopping when I know exactly
what I want. Back. Yes, please. Your English is very good. Thank you. That’s what I said
before. Everyone here speak very good English. And they come up to you to help you find things.
It’s really nice. Oh, good. Thank you. Byebye. Big bag full. Full of goodies. Do we
have the baggage space? I think we have to wear our jackets. We have to wear it now. It’s
raining. Look. Oh, perfect. It’s pouring outside. It’s the camera DJI Pocket 3. He said, “You look handsome and I
look beautiful. We’re a good match.” He thinks you’re very handsome. Here, let me
take Especially with my new rain jacket. Yeah, I feel like he he couldn’t stop staring at
your handsome face. And then he probably   felt a bit bad. He’s like, “You’re
also very beautiful. Bye-bye. Like, why are we wearing our new clothes
to go test out the rain? Is it really   waterproof?” Definitely waterproof. Yeah,
it’s sitting right on top of the jacket. I think we showed the right color combination
too. We look great. Okay. Cute. [Music] We now made it to Kunming Old Street and
got some snacks ready. So quick. We thought we would come here. Check it out since we’re
already in Kunming. Yeah, we have never been   here. We’ve been here last time as a transit.
We never actually filmed Kunming, but there’s quite a few things to explore, but I think today
we’ll just cover this old street. It looks pretty lively. Like everywhere else we’ve been to so
far seems really quiet, but there’s a lot of   people here. You want a rose bun? Steam bun? Yes,
please. That looks nice. Remember how much I like the rose cakes last time when we were in Yunnan?
And that one is scallion and meat. We can share. Oh, that’s delicious. That’s
so good. Grilled tofu. Oh, yum. It smells good. It looks good. Some green
onion, pickled cabbage. Mhm. Yes. Spicy chili. Within 2 minutes, we got two snacks
already. It’s really hot. Is it really hot? That’s delicious. And quite spicy, too. It has a
little bit of the mala taste to it. That’s yummy. Four yuan. So the city of Kunming is in Yunnan
region and Yunnan is famous for coffee, famous for wild mushrooms and roses and I think a lot of
different ethnic minorities live here. So you see a range of different different foods as well. That
explain why I see a lot of mushroom sculptures around the city. There’s like mushroom hot pot and
everything. But I have read before that there is also a risk to eating wild mushrooms. Like there’s
a lot of people during like the mushroom season in Yunnan, they get hospitalized because sometimes
they’re picking the wrong mushrooms to eat. But   I think the commercialized things are usually
fine, but it’s like maybe local people sometimes be like, “Oh, this looks good and eats it.” I
think from a short period of time that we have been here in Kunming, it’s it’s a nice city. Mhm.
It’s not as crowded. It’s not as commercialized. Lots of local people here. We actually had an
offer before to come and spend a couple weeks in Kunming to learn Chinese. Yeah. So, I think
if I had four weeks of Chinese lessons in China, I think I could be fluent. Me, too. Me,
too. Wow. This area is really nice. [Music] This is fun. Potato and chicken. If you want seasoning, he she
said you can go inside to add some seasoning. Oh, okay. You figure it out. I don’t know
what I’m doing, but I got a lot of um chili paste. Two types and some
pickle something. But this is chicken, right? It’s chicken. Look. Why is it so skinny?
It’s a skinny chicken. Let me add some of the chili powder on the potato here. I’ll just
go over here. I feel like this is more cozy than even like the the old street, the old towns
like in which are more famous. I love it. I feel like we eating with locals. We’re eating
with grandma’s preparing this food here. Dip in the chili sauce. Good chicken. Good chicken. M. Dip in this
chili. Is it? Is it? My god. Is it spicy? Wow. That’s amazing. That’s a good chili sauce.
I think I’m going to try one of those. The tofu tofu ball. It’s yummy. Can I try
one? Can I try one? Should I try one? Give me a warm one. Grilled tofu ball. Can you share? You can have it. Whole thing. Eat the whole
thing. It’s supposed to explode. Oh, that’s good. Really? Does it explode in
your mouth? Like, is there something inside? Mhm. Almost like um soft tofu inside. The skin is
very chewy though. I love tofu. You always charm your way with the the older ladies. I know. Good
for you. Older people think I’m I’m handsome here. It’s finally happening, babe. It is. It’s 7:00
in the morning. We are back at Kunming airport, ready to go to our gate to board our flight
from Kunming to Lhasa. Lhasa, Tibet, Lhasa, Tibet. I’m nervous. Don’t be. We took the
altitude sickness pills already. We’re all the herbal remedy for the last two days. Hoping it’s
going to work. So, fingers crossed. Everything went smoothly. Can they check our permits? Uh,
we got everything ready. The only thing was they took my power bank because it doesn’t have the
CCC verification on the back. Mhm. Apparently, a lot of power banks don’t have it and you cannot
travel with that in a domestic China flight. So, it wasn’t just us. We saw another girl got
her power bank got taken away. Yeah. So,   if you plan to come to China, make sure you have
that CCC logo at the back of your power bank. It’s pretty funny because our flight from Thailand to
Kunming, China was 2 hours. This flight is going to be 3 hours from Kunming. We’re going so far
up because Tibet is the roof of the world. The roof of the world. Here we come. Wow, it’s a
lot of people going to Tibet. I’m surprised. But I think some people transit too because when
I was um checking in, she was like, “Are you going there or are you going to transit?” We got a lot
of weird looks and questions when people ask where   we going. We said Tibet. Yeah, but it is actually
a very popular destination for like domestic Chinese tourists to go to because it’s just it’s
like beautiful and it’s very different. Okay. If anything was to go wrong, it would be now that
they don’t let us board. No, it’s all good. It’s all good. I’m still nervous after our experience
coming in. Never know. [Music] Yay! We’re through. It’s still raining today. I wonder if
the temperature is going to be similar.   I hope we don’t get too much rain. [Music] All
right. window seat. I almost made the mistake at checking because she’s like, “You want an
aisle seat? Can you window seat?” I was like,   “Maybe aisle seat.” Because we’ve
been peeing so much taking her herbal capsules. And then suddenly I was like the
views of the mountain window seat. [Music] Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Lhasa
International Airport. We arrived. Welcome to Tibet. Lhasa Tibet. And look at the sunshine.
Beautiful weather. Look at the mountains. This feels so unreal. It has always been my dream
to be here in Tibet. And we’re finally here. We are surrounded by mountains at the airport.
We can’t film inside the airport. So this is, you know, the first look at Tibet here. Yeah,
it is one of the most beautiful airports we have been to. This is our van heading to the
hotel now. I’m running out of breath already. It’s about an hour drive to our hotel. Yes. To
Lhasa. Yes. So we can grab something yummy to eat because I feel like the elevation is making
me hungry. How are you feeling though? So far so good. Are you controlling your breathing? I
am. I am taking slower, shorter breaths and thinking positive thoughts. Good. Good. So you
can’t you cannot eat too much today cuz your stomach will have bad. So I shouldn’t eat too
much today. Oh, but I’m hungry. Yeah. Oh man, this brings back memories, huh? For me, you
didn’t really need it last time. I did, but not as much as you did. Don’t do too much though,
cuz you need your body to to adjust itself. Nice and fresh. So, we made it safely to Tibet
now, and we’re starting an amazing 9-day journey here. We’ll make sure to document our experience
and we can’t wait to share it with you and I’ll give you an update of the situation as well. But
so far I’m feeling pretty good. So you don’t need this then? No, I don’t need it. Ready? Yes. Okay.
3 2 1. Welcome to Tibet. We’re kicking off our Tibet series here in Lhasa, the capital and the
heart of Tibetan culture. Over the next 4 days, we dive into the city during one of
its most magical times of the year,   the Shoton Festival. From witnessing the vibrant
celebrations that bring the city to life to exploring sacred monasteries and temples and even
trying our hand at making traditional incense, this journey is just the beginning of
discovering the spirit and culture of Tibet. You’re warm enough for now. My problem is not
warmth. I need to pee. I’ve been needing to pee for the last hour and a half. How long have we
been here? 2 hours. 2 hours. 2 hours. Yeah. So, we woke up at we met at 4:30 and then we hiked
from the hotel. Not hike, but like we walked up from the hotel up to here in the rain. In the
rain. And it’s about 7:30 now. There’s a bit of a traffic jam. We’re waiting to go up to see
the thangka, which is like a what is it? Tibetan painting because it’s a special um It’s the Shoton
Festival. The yogurt banquet. It’s very special. Like you can see so many local people and also
like tourists here to see the reveal of the painting cuz it’s not always the same. So it’s
one or the other. So we’re not sure which one is going to come out today. Every year during
the festival it will be raining. Oh okay. So this is normal. The locals are prepared. And how
are you doing? Feeling better getting used to to the elevation now. But yesterday I was really
struggling though. spend pretty much all day and all night in the room recovering, getting the
rest that I needed, getting enough oxygen in me. So this is my first experience of something
similar to a pilgrimage where a lot of very devoted Buddhists all coming together to walk up
to see this painting and to see the monks because the show festival is basically celebrating the end
of summer. The monks were inside the monastery for 2 months to meditate basically not be outside
where there’s a lot of living like insects and and bugs and everything. They want they stayed
inside in order to not kill any life. So now everyone is coming to celebrate them coming
out from the monastery and giving them yogurt. That’s why it’s called a yogurt
festival or yogurt banquet. Oh, I can see it, babe. Yeah. Oh, you see to
your left, they haven’t unrolled it yet.   They haven’t revealed it. We made it in time.
I think they’re supposed to reveal it early, but I think with the rain and everything.
Oh, it’s revealing. Oh. Oh, it’s happening. [Music] [Music] [Music] So apparently it is 40m long and then 60m wide.
It’s pretty humongous. Never seen such a thing. Some people they go on the ground to pay
respect to the Buddha. To the painting. Yeah. And they do it several times. It’s like
doing burpees. Yeah. And it’s not easy in this elevation. Thousands of people. Yeah. Lots
of respect for them. So on the way here, we pick up two scarves. Well, we paid for it.
Only 5 yuan each. Yeah, they call it khata or a scarf and we’re going to be donating or no, you
offer it. So, you first make a wish, a prayer for your future, what you want, something like
that, and then you put it on I don’t know where, but you offer it somewhere up there. So, we have
to find out when we get up there. It’s quite chaotic here. And the air is filled with incense
smoke. Mhm. It’s a strong pine smell. Yeah. So, I see people just tossing this gas onto the
the painting. The thangka. They make a wish and they just toss them on there. It’s
actually very beautiful. It’s so vibrant. Yay. You made it. I’ll get really close. [Music] It’s so much nicer now that the sun is
out. Yeah, even though it’s not hot,   but it’s still much nicer. I got a biscuit
it’s giving me energy. From where? from Nomad, our Tibetan guide. So, this is
now the Drepung Monastery. So, we’re just walking around giving a little
tour of this place. It was built in 1417, I believe. Very beautiful. Yeah. And look at the
myth. I think we’re almost closer to 3,900 m now. But I feel pretty good. You feeling okay? I feel
much better. It was just the cold that got us. [Music]   just checking my oxygen level. Wow. You feel
low? I feel good right now. So, before when I was feeling a little bit of a headache, I was at
like 86. Oh, I’m at 84. 84 is good, right? 84 is so it’s okay. It’s okay. 80 is low. 80 is okay.
70 is not very low. Oh, 70 is not good. Yeah. I also felt much better than yesterday, too.
Wa. Oh, you’re 90. Oh, you’re fine. I’m going to run down. Can you take that backpack again?
I’ll carry you down. I’ll carry you all down. Ending our first day with some hot tea.
This is sweet tea. Is there milk in there? There’s yak milk, right? Yak milk
and sugar and tea. Cheers. We did well, guys. That was intense. That was super intense.
Intense. Second second morning. Yeah. How long did it take us to get there? Oh my god. At
8 something. 8. I think at least 8. Yeah,   cuz I checked the time and like it was after
the sunrise. Yeah. 3 and 1 half hours. So, we started walking about 430. Yeah. We
got there at 7:30. Almost 8. Almost 8. Wow. You’re missing out though because the the
sweet tea which is basically just like milk tea but the milk tea the milk is yak milk is really
tasty. Ooh, we got noodles. Wow. What a treat. It’s a vegetarian because
today they don’t eat meat. Oh,   this look comforting. Perfect
for a weather like this. It’s good. This is really yummy
actually. Very comforting. Oh my goodness, babe. You seeing this? Wow.
Oh, this is one of the main reasons we wanted to come to Tibet. So we are at the Potala
Palace which is probably the most iconic image. I think if you if you heard of Tibet or
you’ve seen Tibet on postcard or on the website, this is the image of it. So it is a I think the
highest altitude palace in the world. Like you can see it’s like all the way up there overlooking
the city of Lhasa. It’s pretty incredible. cannot believe we’re finally here. I’ve seen this
image since I was in high school. And this is why I wanted to come to Tibet. It’s so grand. It’s so
big. So today is day three of us being in Tibet and we are starting to acclimatize. I think we
feel much better. We had a good sleep last night which is a good sign that we’re adjusting. But
yesterday was quite a hectic day because we did a lot of walking. I think close to 25,000 steps.
So that meant when we went back to the hotel, plugged in the oxygen, relaxed a bit, and no
shower. Yeah, we still haven’t showered for two days now. This is day three. Day three. Little
bit stinky. We soaked our feet yesterday, but we didn’t like properly shower. I didn’t wash my
hair. I’m wearing a hat today. So hopefully today we will finally shower and be clean again. We’re
still a bit nervous though because going up there. I think this one is okay because we did go to
3900m yesterday, but tomorrow also is going to be in the city. So, we have like a final adjustment
day and then we go higher up like 4,000-5,000 m. Another thing I’m really happy about so far this
tour is that we didn’t have to plan anything.   We don’t really do tours a lot, but this time, I
think we mentioned in an earlier video, like this time, this tour, we are invited by this Chinese
tour company called Eastogo, and their focus is really on like Sichuan and Tibet, and lots of like
cultural and nature adventures, which is our vibe. Yeah. So, we’ve just been hanging out with Z, with
Nomad, our two guides, and also with Dana, who’s another content creator as well, and just enjoying
everything they planned. wake up, eat breakfast, be like, “What’s the plan for today?” Yeah. And
the hotels so far that they have booked have been excellent. Excellent. Very comfortable. Very
comfortable. Big, comfortable, always has oxygen supply. Yeah. So far, it’s been amazing. We just
met up with our group and we’re now entering the palace. You’re going to notice that there’s going
to be a lot of people offering you like a stack of cash one bills and that is because they want to
exchange with you in order for you to have these small bills to go inside the temple and offer
to monks to to the Buddha to different places basically inside the palace in the temple. Tibetan
people are very generous. I think they love giving out they love giving out donations. I think it’s
for like festivals. You see people very generously giving it to other people and buying gifts and
liquor and scarves to offer them in the temple. Another thing we notice is like when you’re
in line, everyone’s holding their ID cards,   but also a can of oxygen. We have them in our
bags. Yeah, we have some in our bags just in case. We’re going to walk all the way up there. Mhm. We
can do it. No matter what angle you’re looking at, it’s just so beautiful. [Music] I’m running out
of breath already. My needs and oxygen. We get up there. Got a ticket to go up to the palace. Now
we just need to walk up 1,800 steps approximate. That’s easy, right? I mean, we can take a
regular break. She didn’t answer easy right away. [Music] 20 steps. Wow, that came quick. We literally just turned the corner. It’s not just you. Look how
many people need to rest. Yeah. Yeah. We’ll take it easy. We’ll be okay. I checked my oxygen just now
with Z. I’m at 88% which is really good cuz I was down to like 78 yesterday.
after all the walking. All right. We’re so close already. Almost there. So, before I run out of breath,
let me tell you a little bit of history about the Potala Palace. So, it has 1,300 years of
history here. In the 7th century, the 33rd King of Tibet started building the the palace here.
It was his royal residence. And I think it was I think it was just the white part kind of the
bottom white part that was built. It’s like not   all of it is built right away because in the 17th
century when the fifth Dalai Lama moved here, he expanded and he also did renovation of
here. And so you see the hall behind us, the red one is part of what he has built then. Oh
my god, I feel so out of breath all of a sudden. Talking takes a lot of oxygen. Yeah. Um, another
interesting thing is that originally they used a lot of this Tibetan like grass and yak skin and
yak dung to build the original structures of the palace. Of course, after many years, they’ve
renovated it um and added probably more like solid structure to it. Um, but you can still see
them along the wall. still see like the grass, the red grass, and every year they paint it with
this milk and honey and limestone mixture. And lots of local people come to help rebuild
it as well. And because it’s a bit sweet,   some people even lick it. No way. So
cool to see it up close as you walk up. [Music] We are now inside the palace on top of the
palace. This is the last stop that we can take videos. Mhm. Once we enter here,
apparently our phones won’t even work. Really? I don’t ask. You know why? Because the
walls of this palace is 6 m thick. So thick. So there are a lot of important relics that are
inside the palace here. The most famous one, the most important one I think is the stupa of
the fifth Dalai Lama. It’s the one that we will see inside that is full of gold. This palace
is actually the religious site in the world that has the most gold. I think 30 tons of
gold lives in this palace. So, unfortunately,   we won’t be able to show you what it looks
like cuz we can’t film, but we can pop a photo, an image probably we can find online of what that
looks like. And there’s many other things like   there’s lots of relics. There’s also other stupas
of the 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 Dalai Lama also in there. And the stupa just means it’s their mummified body
that’s like inside and also their their thrones because they resided at the palace as well. Lots
of interesting things. I’m excited to see it. [Music] Look at that. Beautiful. [Music] Quick stop for lunch here. I got yak meat stir
fry with garlic chives. Yak meat soup with daikon. Stir-fried veggies, steamed rice, and egg drop
soup. Is this a typical Tibetan lunch? Is it? Yes, it is. Is it? How about for the monks? What did
you get? I ordered like a a dumpling soup cuz I want something warm. Um, and also I was
scared if anything is too greasy for you, then at least I have soup. Yeah. Yeah. But
I tried this just now. So, you ordered the It’s like a Tibetan bread with meat inside.
kind of reminds me of Gurung bread. Yeah, the shape of it. Very similar cuz it has the slice
in the middle, but it’s like a bit salty. The meat is really good. I like this one. Oh, good. It’s
good, right? It’s not It’s not greasy. This with condensed milk or honey? Honey. Perfect. So, there
is condensed milk inside. No, I mean it would be good with condensed milk. He’s very Thai, he
likes to dip all the bread, all the dough. That’s yak meat. Honestly, It just tastes
like beef. That’s what I thought. It’s like lean. You cannot tell. It did. I thought it
would be gamey, but no. It smells like beef. But lamb is gamey. It’s like really lean beef,
but it has a strong meat taste, which is nice. Oo. That looks good, girl. Nice.
Nice and hot, too. Mhm. Wow. Yummy. Mhm. This one’s good. Yummy inside,   too. I like this vegetable. Yeah.
You find Do you find it yucky? It’s very yaky. Yak. Yak taste. Wow. The
watermelon looks so good. Why? You see the the original one is like that big. We’re
getting some fruit and some snacks for a picnic. Yes. And I think there’s over um
over there there’s sweet potato chestnuts, sweet potato. So right now we are You want to
give a try? Oh yes, please. Can I have this one? Is it sweet? It doesn’t look sweet, but it is sweet. Yeah, the
color is not as red, but there’s a lot of seeds. We’re going to get half. Damn. That is really sweet. Mhm.
Oh. Oh. Oh. They got to run, babe. They got to run. Where? They got to go.
Why? Wait, wait, wait. Come. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. The police. Yeah. All But we haven’t paid
yet. Yeah. But he also didn’t give it to us yet. That’s all we got. That’s all we got. The
police show up and then he was Yeah. He was like, “Did you pay yet?” And then we were like,
“No.” He’s like, “Oh, good” and then he left So, they’re not allowed to park here
and sell, you know, I guess not. That was funny. That was an
interesting experience. But   Nomad says we’ll find other snacks along the way. We got to be quick. We got to be quick. Just run run. That’s so funny. Wow. He really risked
it to give us the watermelon. How much was it? 24. 24 y. He risked his life for 24 yuan. [Music] Hello. Good to see you. Back
in our cozy van. So, we’re heading to uh where we’re going to picnic, right? What
is the place called? The summer palace. What is the name? Norbulingka. Norbulingka
Palace. That’s where we’re going. Okay, we’re in the car now. Nomad said once we’re in the
car, he’s gonna sing for us. Yes. Maybe tomorrow. Tomorrow. Tomorrow. You Yeah. You keep
saying tomorrow. Yeah. Tomorrow. Okay. Okay. Tomorrow. Tomorrow. Tomorrow. Tomorrow.
Tomorrow. Okay. Okay. Before we leave Tibet, we’ll get we’ll get to hear
Nomad sing. Of course. Of course. Wow. It’s very big. Yeah. Let’s get
one. We need a mat for our picnic. 20 yuan for one. They have everything.
Yeah, there’s actually a lot of bread and and snacks and fruits all over there.
Okay, I think we are set, huh? Yeah, we got water. We got watermelon. We got
a mat and some snacks in my backpack.   Because today is still the second day of the show
festival here in in Lhasa. So, a lot of the local people have holidays and many of them decide to
come here to the uh summer palace or Norbulingka is what it’s called. Actually, where we were
before the hotel palace that is called the winter palace and this is like the summer palace. Oh, the
amount of people coming to this park is insane. It’s going to be hard to find a spot, babe.
But you know what’s so nice is yesterday we didn’t get to see a lot of people wearing the
traditional Tibetan clothes, but today they’re all wearing it cuz the sun is out. Yeah, it’s
quite beautiful. Yeah, it’s just like her. Yeah. Oh, wow. Wow. That’s a 3D ticket. That’s
beautiful. Even monks are here to picnic. Should I try it? You should try it.
You’re here. Try it. What kind of   ice cream? Milk from the yogurt. Yak from
yak milk. Yak milk. Oh, is it yummy? That looks refreshing. Is it yummy? You must eat.
Okay. Okay. Try it, man. Fourth. Yes. Well, your English is really good. Just a little
bit. No, you have perfect English. [Music] So cute. Is this one yummy? Yummy. You’re
so shy. You’re so cute. Thank you. Bye-bye. Yeah, it smells like smells like yogurt. Oh, it’s quite sour. Oh, it’s not like really
sweet. It’s more sour. Is it icy? It looks super icy. It’s icy, too. Can I eat it? I’m lactose
intolerant. Well, you usually can eat yogurt. And yak milk actually has less lactose than
cow’s milk, so I think you can probably try it. Okay. It’s actually really refreshing when
it’s so hot. This is nice and sour and light. It’s refreshing, right? It is. It’s really sour. I like it. We actually saw this yesterday,
but we were too scared to try it cuz we were walking like so many steps, so exhausted.
But today, I feel pretty good. So, I was like, time to try it. Delicious. Lots of
lots of people selling it. [Music] It’s going to be impossible to find a
spot. I’ve never been to a park that is this packed. They’ve probably been here for
hours. I think I’m planning to stay because there’s so much food on people’s mats and
it’s like a big big family gathering. This is really nice though. I think Norman’s
trying really hard to squeeze the spot for   us. He’s using his charm with the lady.
He’s a good-looking man. Look at him. [Music] There’s a little pocket
there. I think we find a spot, guys. [Laughter] [Music] Good job. How did you manage? All right. [Music] Wow. That’s a humongous
piece. Watermelon. M. Is it good? Is it good? Is it good? Delicious. One of
the most delicious watermelon I ever had. Most delicious illegal watermelon.
It’s so interesting how it’s cold. I think I feel much better now. My
body adapt. But every time I sit   close to Flora I need the oxygen
because she takes my breath away. Our guides are not even surprised
with his corny jokes anymore. [Music] [Music] It’s so lively this morning. So we are here at
Bakuo Street which is kind of the heart of Lhasa City. We are waiting to enter this temple
here which is called the Jokhang Temple and it’s actually the most sacred temple in all
of Tibet. Inside is a statue of Shakyamuni which is the Buddha 1300y old statue that is
inside and they believe it is blessed during his lifetime. So it is a pilgrimage site for all
Tibetans. You can see these local Tibetans lining up to go into the temple. And Nomad said some
of them even started lining up at 3:00 a.m. Oh, really? The temple opens at 7:00. Yeah. And you
still see people walking around and praying. And it’s just like a very special feeling to to be
here in the morning and experiencing like the Tibetan culture. It feel wholesome. Yeah. You
see the group of ladies over there. Mhm. So all their friends and family are here right now
to give them the scarf to welcome them because   they actually traveled thousands of kilometers
to get here. And they didn’t just walk here, take a car here. They did the prostrations which
is like the prayer where you like pray and then you get down on your knee like a full body act of
devotion. Yeah. And it’s a huge part of Tibetan culture and we can see a lot of people doing
it around the temple as well in the clockwise um direction and it is to show devotion. It’s
to remove bad karma but also to like gain merit and we see this happening here this morning
but also we came by in the evening the other   day and we also see a lot of people doing
that at night. I have so much respect for them cuz just walking around the square itself
is already tiring and have to do that but also other people are around so you have to be
so concentrated and devoted to ignore the   people around you and just focus on what you’re
doing. So it’s yeah, it’s pretty amazing to see. [Music] We are inside the temple now, the Jokhang
temple. And this area we can still film but once we go inside we actually cannot film
anymore. But Nomad was telling me that this area we are here now every year they hold a
examination. So monks study for 30 years 40 years and then they have an opportunity to take
an exam to become a lama once in a lifetime. So if they fail that’s that’s it. You cannot
retake. Yeah. So every year I think in August they come here to take the exams and all the
different monasteries have monks coming here. And you can see the architecture of of this
temple also is a bit different from the the monastery we went to a couple days ago. Kind of
has like a Indian Nepali Tibetan influence to it. [Music]   How do you like it? What is it? Saffron water.
It tastes really nice. It’s so yellow. Yeah, it tastes really nice. And no, it doesn’t stain
you. But the water is water that has been, I guess, like blessed from the Buddha statue
inside. So they change it every single day and then they put it here for people to
drink or to bless themselves. [Music] We’re here now at this bookstore. I think
well downstairs is a bookstore and a cafe, but we’re actually going upstairs
where we will be doing a little   bit of a workshop to learn more about
Tibetan culture and the Tibetan incense and calligraphy maybe. That sounds fun.
But this place is so beautiful. Look, one thing about Tibet is every corner is
so picture. Yeah. Wow. This is so cozy. So beautiful. It’s a little oasis which means
beautiful. Beautiful. Huh? How you say it again? Beautiful. Beautiful. Yeah. Very good. Okay. So I first put the cypress powder like the tree
powder in here. This helps for it to combust. And then this is elm and it helps to solidify the
incense. So this is the basic structure of it. There’s two more things we need to add to it for
the smell and for the medicinal properties. This   is like spices. So you kind of go to the market
and see what spices do you like and that’s how you decide what you want to add. And then this
one is the Tibetan medicine. So it’s a mix of 30 different types of like herbs and stuff in there.
Then you mix it first with your finger and when it’s even you want me to add the water for you,
you add two scoops of water and then you mix and you knead it together like tai sticky rice. Yeah.
Like this. You’re good at that. And now we have to shave it into the cone. Mhm. But make sure to push
out all the air first. Mhm. Oh, yours is pretty nice. Wow. And look at that. We have an incense.
So, this needs to be dried for 24 hours. Yeah. And then we can use it. Was it like naturally
dried? Don’t use fan. Don’t use anything to dry it. Just use sunlight. Mhm. Cool. Oh, you can
make a thinner when you rub it in your hand, too. Or just do it on the table here. Wow, you’re so
talented. I’m so lucky to have you as a husband. That wasn’t rehearsed. That just came to your   mind. I wanted to say it from
the bottom my heart. Yeah. Yeah. [Music] Okay. Good. Okay. Good. I think it’s going to
be good. Okay. Let’s have a look. I think Whoa. Yay. This is nice. Good. Beautiful. Come show
them what you made. What did you say? I got this one. It is tashi delek. A greeting and
a blessing. And mine say Om Mani Padme Hum yeah that’s a mantra mantra of Buddha home
you will hear it everywhere in Tibet it’s a prayer for compassion and kindness and Tibetans
believe that chanting it help purifying the mind and bring peace correct so that’s why a lot
of people walking around the Jokhang temple holding their hand like this and chanting that
mantra. All right, so that’s it for Lhasa. Yeah, we spent was it four days? Four days here
exploring a lot of the important monasteries, temples and just amazing places in the city. But
then tomorrow we’re heading out of Lhasa. Where we going? Where we going Z? We’re going to Yamdrok
Lake, a sacred lake in Tibet, and then Baiju   Monastery, Shigatse, and then Mount Everest base
camp. Wow. And that’s going to be what over 5200 m above sea level. Are you excited? Excited, Dana?
Yeah, I’m very excited for it. Looking forward to it. Which part are you the most excited about?
I think Everest Base Camp cuz I’ve never been   to Everest before. Yeah, me too. It will be the
first time for all of us. So, Everest. Yeah. Yeah. Wow. We are on our way from Lhasa to Yamdrok
Lake today. And this is one of the stops. We’re about an hour and a half away from Lhasa.
Yeah. And we’re at the highest altitude we have been so far actually in our entire life,
4,125m above sea level. And surprisingly, we feel great. We feel great. There is like
an a big oxygen tank in the back of the car in case we need it. But we feel good. But after this
stop, we are going to pass through Kambala Pass, which is 4,800 m before we get to the lake. But
this is so interesting. I’ve never seen a yak. I’ve never seen a Tibetan dog. Let’s
go take a look. They’re so beautiful. Where are your eyes? Can’t even see
your eyes. Wow. They’re so majestic. Don’t eat my camera. Let’s go check
out the viewpoint. We only have a few minutes left. Yeah, we’re going
to go up there. And along the wall, there are goats. Baby goats.
standing on top of it all dressed up. You can hold them to take a photo.
I think it’s 15 to 20 yuan each. The   lady was grabbing my hand and wouldn’t let
go cuz she wanted me to hold one. Now look at this viewpoint. We are at right here it
says 4,280 m. Even higher on the the app. Wow. And look at the road that we
we took. Good thing we took motion sickness pills cuz it actually gets quite
rough around the turns. Can see the river from here. What a beautiful landscape,
especially with the mist floating. [Music] [Music] We have now arrived at Yamdrok Lake. It is one
of the holiest bodies of water in Tibet and and also one of the most beautiful lakes I have
seen. Crazy beautiful. It’s turquoise blue. Apparently the shape of it if you look from up
top downwards it’s looks like a scorpion. Oh right. You can kind of see the twist and turns.
Wow. Just incredible. And another reason why this lake here is so sacred is because it is said
that if someone has pure devotion, they’re able to get divine visions from it. Like they can see the
future or they can see something that is the truth about something like they just get visions. So the
Dalai Lama or high Lamas coming here to meditate, they’re able to see visions like that. But for us,
we just enjoy the views, the views of the lake. We’re just so lucky that it’s so clear. On the
other side, it’s actually very foggy. You cannot see anything, but on this side is completely
completely open sky. Did we mention that we are at 5,000 m above sea level as well? Are we
really? Yeah. How come I’m feeling okay? Okay, actually, which is good. That means we
have acclimatized. We’re at 4,800 now. And we feeling great. If we walk up
there where all the prayer flags are,   I think that might be 5,000. I think we might
be okay. Going to the Everest base camp. A lot of the song that we feature on this video is
actually sang by Nomad. Yes. You’re going to show us some. Of course. No, I’m showing young.
Okay. Oh, okay. Interjoy this song. Thank you. Wow. [Music] Wow. Wow. Very nice. Thank
you. Thank you. Very nice. I always love prayer flags. Remember we
learned about the colors when we were in   Nepal? I had to look it up again. But they are
the five elements. So blue is sky, white is air, red is fire, green is water, yellow is earth.
So together they kind of balance nature and it’s also a symbol of bringing blessings and wish
across mountains and rivers and valleys because you know how the wind blows these prayers and
blessings across and it also symbols nothing is permanent because they fade. Isn’t that beautiful?
Because that’s a huge thing. Part of Buddhism is like nothing is permanent. Yeah. Should we stack
some? Yeah. Stones. What do you call these? We see them everywhere. I don’t know the Tibetan
name for them. But we do see these stack stones in a lot of these like high mountain passes, high
roads. I read that if we stack them while we can um chant Om mani padme hum, it’s like we are
making an offering to the mountain spirits to the deity to protect us during this journey.
Cool. So, we can stack one together. Should we stack this one here? Let’s stack a tall one here.
Yeah, this one here. Yeah. Okay. Okay. Come on. You okay getting up? Oh, it’s getting up too fast. I see stars. [Music] You see visions. See vision of the future where you
need to use oxygen in the car? [Music] You think the water is cold? Probably.
We’re not allowed to touch it. No. Because it’s holy water. Mhm. No swimming, no touching, no
fishing, no drinking. So, in our previous video, we mentioned that we are on a tour here in Tibet
because it is a requirement for foreigners like us to be part of a tour. Uh they also will
be able to get the travel permit for you. And a lot of the sites we go to in the last video
going to be in this video also has entrance fees which usually the tour will cover for us and
we don’t have to go and line up and get tickets which is great. So we are joining Eastogo. They
prepared everything for us. We just have to show up. Mhm. It’s actually great for us not to have to
plan too much and just experience the culture with local people. We have a local Tibetan guide, but
also we’re with Z, who’s the owner of Eastogo. So, it’s Yeah, it’s just a great experience and
different from what we usually do cuz usually   we do so much research. Yeah. And this time I just
get to enjoy and ask questions. I like it, too. [Music] Oh my god. Wow. Look at that. This is
insane. We are at the Karola Glacier. We’re already at 5,000 m above sea level, but that
at the top there is over 7,000 m above sea level. And look at all the melted streams coming down.   They look like the veins of
a giant monster. Yeah. Wow. You will hear a lot of wow on this
trip. I feel like whatever we say does not justify what it really
looks like when you see it. It’s   just so grand. And you need sunglasses
because it’s so bright over here. [Music] Look at how over here it’s so green and lush
and as you move to the left it’s all sandy and rocky and on the left even higher
is all snow and ice. During the drive, we have seen how the landscape changed almost
every 15 minutes. Yeah. From just from the city, from flat ground to rocky mountains,
sandy mountain, lush and green mountain, snow cap mountain. They say that glaciers are
also very sacred in Tibet because the deities, the spirits live here. And I think that’s why
you always see the whenever it’s a sacred place, you see these prayer flags everywhere. And that’s
what they’re actually trying to sell us. The guy   who came up to us earlier was like, “Why don’t
you buy one for good luck and for blessings?” I would love to get one. I love prayer flags. I
think Z got one for all of us to write something on. No way. Really? I think so. He has a
pen and he brought a prayer flag over here. What are you writing? He wrote his name and
my wish and we tied them here. Yeah. Oh, your turn. We can share one prayer flag.
Yep. I bought the the shared version. Oh my goodness. Oh, so I can choose like
another page like another one just as long as it like without scripture you can write on it. This
means clouds. This means sky and this means water. This means fire. Cloud. Cloud. Cloud. The sky.
Oh, I also like sky cuz we’re so high up. I’ll write this one. I wrote, “I wish my loved ones to
be healthy.” That’s a good one. Yeah. You have to be healthy to enjoy life. Yeah. No matter how
rich you are. Yeah. How happy you are. Well, you can’t be happy without health. Mhm. So,
health is very important. How about for you? You want to write on water or you want
want to write on cloud? On water. Yeah. I like water because we live on the island of
Koh Samui. Here you write on the blue one.   Just wherever there’s no scripture, you can
write. Happiness for all? Happiness for all This feels so wholesome. And this
going to be here forever. [Music] Wow. You feel good? Yeah. And ours is blowing really strongly in the wind.
It feels like more auspicious. Wow. After we tie that. Look at the
sky cleared up. The cloud is gone. [Music] [Music] What is it called? Longda is for praying as
well. And it’s the environmental friendly, right? Yeah. It’s biodegradable. Yeah. it’s
rice paper. So, what do we do with it? We   make a wish and we throw it in there. Yeah,
we let the wind blow it. The further it blow, the better the wish. It also has the
horse in the middle just like the prayer   flags cuz the horse is like carrying the
blessing far away. Do I do I like throw it or do I just lift put it on my hand?
Uh that lady said put on your hand. Oh, put on my hand. Yeah. Okay. Got to wait for the
wind though. Yeah. You have to make a wish, too. Okay. Wow. Wow. I wish happiness to everyone
in this world. [Applause] Oh no. Go far. You didn’t wait for the wind. Let’s
wait for the wind. Come on. I want everybody in the world to be happy. Come on, wind. Come on. Whoa. Look at how high they go. Go far. Go far, my
friend. Bring lots of happiness to the world. What a view. Wow. This is not even a lake. This is
a reservoir that produces hydro power. just it’s still so beautiful and it’s not a main attraction.
This is just a rest stop. We’re stopping here for only 5 minutes. Oh my goodness. Tibet has some of
the most amazing landscape that I’ve ever seen. So this is our next stop. We are at Baiju
Temple or Baiju Monastery and you can see that it is surrounded by a fort here because
this is called the old town of heroes. Back in the day there was conflict between England and
Tibet but the English at the time was coming through India because they colonized India so
they had kind of conflict around here that’s   why you see the fort built to protect this
area and Z was telling us that we have to go towards the stupa over there because some of the
best Tibetan painting is from the 14th and 15th century and we can see a lot over there. Mhm.
The stupa looks familiar, isn’t it? The eyes, right? With the eyes in the middle. It’s like
the ones we see in Nepal. Yeah. This is because   it’s a different school of Buddhism, I believe.
So, it’s an older school of Buddhism. So, it’s different from the monastery that we went to the
first day. That one is a newer school of Buddhism. Beautiful temple, huh? I like
it because it’s so peaceful. Mhm. Not a lot of people here.
That’s what makes it so special. What happened? The monk twisted his ankle. We are about to enter Qomolangma National Nature
Reserve, which is what they call it here, but for us, we know it as the Everest base camp area. And
right now, we are at 5200 m above sea level. We need to take it a bit slower cuz we can’t feel
it right away, but it kind of hits you quickly. Unfortunately, it seems like there’s a huge storm
above us, but we still have about a couple hours, I think, before we actually get to the base camp.
So, hopefully it will clear. Fingers crossed. Fingers crossed. I’m praying for the Buddha to
clear the sky for me because I just got a new Buddha necklace to bring us good good luck. This
is actually the green Tara. She will protect you especially for health and peace of mind. Oh,
not wealth, health and peace, right? Yes. Yeah. What’s that? This one is a oxygen tank. So,
we need extra. Yeah. So, Z rented one for us in case we need it when we bring it up. Cuz
it’s more expensive up there. Very highish over here. Cannot sleep. I think so. cannot sleep. Yes,
many people say I I don’t know maybe you are very strong I think it’s okay before my some groups
cannot sleep here. So today we left our hotel at 8:30 in Shigatse which is the second largest
city in Tibet and we been in the in the van for how many hours now? Uh, it’s 6 o’clock now, 6
pm. And we now are at this point where we are about 41 kilometers away from the base camp, but
we need to switch to a bus to get us there. Almost there. I think it’s about like one more hour. You
ready? Fighting. It’s going to be worth it. Yeah. [Music] What is this, Nomad? What’s on the ground?
Snow. Oh no. We are base now. We can go this direction. Snow. Babe. We haven’t seen snow
for so long. Years. That’s why I left Canada. I don’t like snow. But we like this snow though.
This is nice. But I think it’s time to swap swap this for for this. Nice. Cuz with elevation,
you have to protect your head and keep it warm. It’s like little ice balls. They’re not Oh,   it’s like hail. Yeah, they’re not like
snow at home in Canada. Interesting. Too bad it’s cloudy, huh? And raining. We can’t
see anything. But it also means there’s a good chance tomorrow morning it would clear. The sky
would clear so we could see Everest. The thing is with direction though, is it there or is it there?
Can’t believe it. We’re finally here. Everest base camp. Never thought that we would be coming to
the Tibet one. No, actually I didn’t even think I would go to both of them cuz it’s a hard journey.
Yeah, like this is so easy. I think compared to the one in Nepal where you have to hike a long
time. This one you can really just come by car   by van. Although it took all day. It did take all
day. But I mean it’s it’s easy and it looks like the accommodation is going to be pretty nice.
Look, like little rooms like this. Bunk beds. Looks cozy though. And even little shops that sell
like tea and noodles and stuff. This is unreal. Nomad is excited. He’s running. He’s strong. Wow, this is so cool. Wow, it’s warm.
There’s a living room. This is living room. Are we all staying together?
This is our kitchen. We have hot water. Okay, this one. Which one? What’s that one? For us? We are at D1. For you, D04 room. Oh, this is so nice. Wow. That’s a real bed. I
honestly thought we were going to be roughing it, but this is like a camp. This
is so nice. Test out the bed. It’s soft. What? Wow. This is glamping at Everest
base camp. It’s warm. It’s so nice. And wow, I’m so surprised. I really did think we were
roughing it. By the way, so we can have oxygen party in your room tonight. Yeah. Right. I want to
put warmer clothes on. We’re going to be checking out the monastery here at the base camp. And I
want to get my necklace blessed before we leave. How special would it be to get it blessed
up here at the base camp? Because I think   the monastery here is the highest monastery
in the world. Is there a toilet here? Yeah, toilet’s here. Come here. Come. Oh,
let’s check out the toilet. Okay,   just uh leave the door. Leave this up. Let’s
see what the toilet looks like. Looks nice. Oh, wow. It’s very modern and it’s extremely
clean. Look at this. Oh, this is good. So far, everything is exceeding my expectation. I
think we’re going to have a very good night here. Maybe grab a beer cuz we deserve it. So the
monastery we’re going to is 5150m above sea level and the camp just over there is 5200m and the
peak of Mount Everest is at 8844m. Is this it? Do you think it’s possible for me to get
my necklace blessed? Okay. So we’re now entering the highest monastery in the world.
This is Rongbuk monastery and it’s also the only monastery where nuns and monks live
in the same monastery. Yeah. [Music] Somehow it feels more special
than other monasteries that we have been to. It’s hard to get to. I know. We’re now going up to get my necklace blessed. I’m so excited for this. I think Z is
getting his blessed again. Oh yeah. [Music] Wow. I’m so happy. I don’t know why, but I’m so happy. It was already special getting this,
but now it’s even more special. So, this Green Tara will be even more powerful,
bringing bringing me good health and peace. Wow, that’s awesome. So in Chinese, getting the thangka blessed
is called “kai gwong”. And that literally translates to opening the light. So now that is
blessed, it’s almost visually you can imagine that light is coming out, shining out, protecting
you. Wow, that’s that’s beautiful. And they’re serving buffet dinner here. How much? 80 yuan
per person. 80. Drinks are not included. Or you can get hot pot for 88. But I think buffet
looks good. This one’s too heavy. This is run by the monastery. I think there’s another
restaurant on the other side is different. But our guide said this is a good one. Wow. It’s
time to celebrate this very special moment. What kind of beer do they have here on Everest
base camp? Is it Lhasa? Lhasa Beer. It says, what do you hear? Beer from the roof of the world.
That’s where we are now. The roof of the world. I think it’s the elevation. That’s why. Cheers, guys. Thank you so much. Yes. It has
been a wild ride and we made it. [Music] Oo, it’s very light. Very
nice. It’s nice and it’s light. Where we live in Canada, it’s – 40. Let’s pray harder tonight for tomorrow
to have a better weather. Okay. [Music] Oh, it’s so cold. It’s cold. Look at all the
snow. I’m so proud of us that we survived the night at 5,200 m. It was rough. It was rough
actually. Like the bed is really comfortable, but like at I don’t know 10pm – 11p.m. I suddenly
had this strong headache. Started having these like vivid dreams and then I was like, “Okay, I
know I need oxygen. I remember this feeling.” So,   good thing good thing our guide has oxygen with
them. So, we took it put it on for an hour or two and I felt much better. And then at 2:00 am.
it was my turn. It was your turn. When we went to bed, we felt great. And with altitude sickness,
you don’t know when it’s going to hit you. All of the sudden, I just had this throbbing headache
in the back of my head. It almost feels like your back of your head is starting to swell. Yeah.
Yeah. It’s kind of a scary feeling. So, I feel like if you’re not sure about the altitude, like
if the first couple days that you’re in Tibet, you’re not feeling that great, then maybe put
on oxygen. Yeah, maybe coming up is might be a bit risky or you should just have oxygen for sure
ready. Don’t wait until you have the symptoms. No, take some of the oxygen first. Oh, we haven’t
been in such cold weather like this for so long. And we’re not used to this. I I use all my
clothes that I brought up. Me, too. My backpack’s pretty empty. Wow. Actually, it’s starting to
clear. Yeah, a little bit. It’s not Everest, but it still looks so epic up here. It’s still
early. I think right now it’s so foggy you can’t see the Everest, but I have some hope that
the sky will clear for us to see it. [Music] Oh, wow. Cheers. [Music] I think I came to Tibet without any expectation
for what it’s going to be like here. And I’m leaving with a feeling that I’m very small in
this world. Do you have that feeling as well? Like all these vast mountains, all these like
sacred lakes and beautiful scenery that we’ve been driving through the Tibetan plateau, you just
feel like, oh, I’m just I’m so small. Nature is so powerful. Yeah. Coming to this Everest base camp
is a highlight for our trip. But unfortunately, we can’t see the Everest. No. But it’s still it’s
still a magical place to be. We hope on the way back there’s another platform that you can have a
look. One last chance. Yeah. One last chance. So fingers crossed it would be amazing to be able
to see it. But I also feel like we love this environment like being in the mountains, being in
nature, that we will definitely come back around, you know, this area to explore more in the future.
It’s definitely a life-changing trip for us. And I also want to just say thank you so much to Z
and to Nomad, the two guides we’ve had during the last, this is what, our eighth day. Yeah,
we uh they have worked so hard to make our trip comfortable to make sure that we are okay but also
to plan out the itinerary in the way that we get to experience culture, we get to experience
food, we get to experience nature and also learn about Tibetan Buddhism. And it was just a
great introduction for us and we hope more people get to experience this because it was quite a
life-changing trip. Yeah. So if you are interested in doing the same trip or similar trips uh they
have many different itineraries and not just in Tibet also in like western Sichuan. So we’ll leave
their website and information and you can take a look. Um yeah it was amazing. Thank you so much.
That’s it for our little Tibet series. Thanks again for watching and as always have a wonderful
day. We’ll see you in the next one. Bye bye. Never thought I’ll be up here
sucking on oxygen with you looking for Mount Everest. This is
one of those moments that reminds   me why I love traveling. Yeah. And
travel is not easy. It’s not easy, but the payoff is well worth
it. We’ll remember this forever. [Music]

  1. 2nd 👋🤓 . Amazing video of guys , enjoyed the scenery, history, culture , foods of Tibet . Enjoy flora and note, have fun and be safe out there 😁🤗 🙏🙏

  2. My personal experience with altitude sickness is that you will have headaches and discomfort.
As long as you can endure it, try to endure it as much as possible without taking oxygen.
After 2-3 days of headache, you will find that you have adapted to everything.
Of course, you will still be out of breath during strenuous exercise.
But if you can't bear it, get oxygen immediately, go to the hospital, and go down the mountain.

  3. If you have studied Chinese the image of 開光 as a blessing is beautiful. May the blessing follow you from the Roof of the World to steamy Thailand.

  4. Nice and it's wonderful that visited the top of the Tibetan Plateau. This is especially true for the (རླུང་རྟ) – the "Wind Horse" symbol, which brings good luck, well-being, and prosperity. But it must be thrown into the air so that it stays in the air as long as possible, which in consideration to promotes peace, purification and blessing. The Green Tara necklace, in particular, is a true blessing and pray with whole heartly that brings fulfill of wishes. Thank you 👍🏼

  6. It would be nice if Flora was allowed to finish a sentence. Note always makes it about him. Flora has the patience of a Saint.

  7. She takes my breath away 😂really note that's so Corney and lovely at the same time 😂😂❤❤🙏🙏🇹🇭🇬🇧

  8. All that reflects from you guys is so much of love, positivity and happiness.
I hope it remains now and forever. Much love. ❤

  9. wow this is wholesome! the others tibet vlog are just so basic but i found this one so profound in exploring Tibet beauty and its culture🔥🔥

  10. Of ALL the places to give one of your fellow allies, David, Flora and Note decided to let allow TWO HOURS of those hours, in LHASA, to be… GREATly cast down upon Lhasa then upon Everest Base Camp again!!! 😍😍😍 Okay, so this was just some minor whacko video, but I just felt like saying a few things anyway, and I don't really feel like heading like the TRULy specific way you're headed next!! 🤣

  11. Watched the whole video, all of 108+minutes, without forwarding and skipping and enjoyed every minute of it.
    Nomad's songs were great 👌👌
Flora's rain dance in Kunming was great too 👌
Yaks are male, so no Yak milk. Female yak is called Dri. Milk also comes from Dzomo, a hybrid of male yak and female cow.
I am surprised you didn't go to Sakya, which is historically very important religiously and politically. It is not far from Shigatse.
Thank you so much for bringing Tibet to us. 🙏🙏👌👌💕💟

  12. I hated yak meat, way too gamey ! I had it in Shangri-La which was only 3200 meters , some 450 m. lower than Lhasa. It was already difficult to breath if you climb stairs up to the mini Potala there.
