【加速する衰退】これが広島の奥座敷の今。廃墟と化した現役の温泉街。昭和レトロな町並みと源泉かけ流しの露天風呂を楽しむ旅!湯来温泉と湯の山温泉
A hot spring area with a history of about 1,500 years. It has been popular as a hot spring resort since the Edo period. “Hiroshima’s inner sanctum” Hiroshima’s inner sanctum, Yuki Onsen and Yunoyama Onsen. Press the subtitle button or CC button to enjoy full subtitles. Hello everyone, this is Watatabi. I’m currently in Hiroshima Prefecture. This time I would like to introduce a hot spring town full of Japanese atmosphere, but the hot spring town I’m heading to is in a critical situation with accelerating decline. The ruins are noticeable and the scenery is being damaged, but it is a truly wonderful hot spring town. The location is Yukicho, Saeki Ward, Hiroshima City, Hiroshima Prefecture. I head to “Yuki Onsen”, located about an hour’s drive from Hiroshima Station. Yuki Onsen, also known as Hiroshima’s inner sanctum, is unable to meet the changing needs of tourism, and its decline is accelerating due to a lack of successors, monotonous management, and aging facilities. This is actually my second visit, but I’m going to see what it’s like now. First, I head to Yunoyama Onsen, which is right next to Yuki Onsen. I drive further into the mountains. In the mountain area of Hiroshima City, a fantastical landscape that seems to come out of a Japanese old story spreads out. I head to my destination while being soothed by the scenery that makes me feel nostalgic. Soon I arrive at Yunoyama Onsen. A small hot spring that appears in the mountain area. Although it is small, it is a historic hot spring resort that has been in existence since 1750 during the Edo period. I arrived. This is Yunoyama Onsen in Hiroshima Prefecture. I visited it once 2-3 years ago. This is a parking lot, but it can park 17 cars. One car is wheelchair-only. There is also a toilet. However, the men’s toilet is completely visible. Right in front of the parking lot is a very huge facility. This is “Kurhaus Yunoyama”, a complex hot spring facility that combines hot spring bathing facilities and sports facilities for relaxation and health promotion. It is a place where you can enjoy 13 types of mixed bathing hot springs in swimsuits, as well as a sauna, a 25m heated pool, and a training room for a whole day. I’m a little curious because there seems to be a water slide. This hot spring is said to have been open for about 1200 years. It is a hot spring resort with a long history. There are lots of chickens. It seems that you can feed these chickens. Barley, corn, brown rice… what is this question mark? I’m curious. Since I’m here, let’s spin this question mark. There’s no amount written on it, but is it 100 yen? It was 100 yen. The capsule came out like this. When I heard the sound of the capsule coming out, the chickens suddenly became noisy. I think they probably know that they will get food. What!? Inside was… 200 yen. See! What ? Is that possible? That ‘s a 100 yen saving. What? What do they want to do? It seems that the capsule is put in this bag. Humans are greedy… I’ll do it again. If it comes out again, it’s 400 yen. That’s a 300 yen profit for 100 yen. Food came out as expected. What is this? Probably… corn. I’d like to give it to them right away. They’re fidgety. What kind of bird is this? It doesn’t have a crest, so it doesn’t look like a chicken. Wait a minute. There’s a lot of food here. How do you feed them? Do you feed them like this? Oh, they’re eating! I’m not sure if this is the right way… How do you feed these guys? They’ll get angry if you open it without permission, right? It’s scary when they run away. It looks like they’ll run away. No! No! No! No! No no no no! They’ll run away. I’ll put you in here. Now! I got 200 yen, so I’d like to give another 100 yen back to the chicken. But, you know, humans are greedy… I’ll roll the question mark again. This is corn. Unfortunately, I didn’t get 200 yen. The hot spring area is here. There’s also a foot bath. It’s a pretty small hot spring area, but it’s a charming townscape. There is a lodging facility, but from what I can see on the internet, I think there is only one. It seems that you can feed the carp here. I think the only place you can stay is Morii Ryokan . You can see Yunoyama Onsenkan on the mountain directly ahead, which is a hot spring that you can take a day trip to. Actually, they only do day trips. The source of the spring water flows over there. This is the foot bath. I think this is a cold mineral spring. When I came here before, there were crayfish and doctor fish in here, but I can’t see them now. The temperature of the spring here is 23.5 degrees. It’s pretty cold. Ah! It’s cold! There are doctor fish here, after all. Doctor fish are gathering only on the left foot. There are only 2-3 on the right foot, but there are more than 10 on the left foot. There is a donation box here. It seems that the donations are used for repairs to the Yunokami Shrine and the maintenance of this facility. The market price for a doctor fish therapy experience is about 300 yen. That means you have to put in 300 yen. There are rental towels next to the foot bath. You can come empty-handed. They are not new, so if you are concerned, it is better to bring your own. This does not seem to be a shop. Is it a private house? This is a shrine. If you climb up here, you will reach Yunoyama Onsenkan. As expected of Hiroshima. It seems that new players who join the Hiroshima Toyo Carp visit here every year. Prayers for the success of new Hiroshima Toyo Carp players. It seems that they have been doing this since 2018. This building is the Yunoyama Onsenkan. The bathing fee is 430 yen for those 12 years old and over, and 150 yen for those 4 years old and under 12 years old. This is a hot springs spa built by Hiroshima feudal lord “Asano Yoshinaga” in 1750 during the Edo period. The old hot springs spa still remains above this, and it is a national important tangible folk cultural property. It is moving to see that it has been used since the Edo period. I’ve been to this hot spring before, and there is a 4m high “waterfall bath”. Since it is a hot spring, it is cold at 23.5 degrees, but the indoor bath is heated to 41 degrees, so the way to enjoy this place is to alternate between the waterfall bath and the indoor bath. It seems to be good for stiff shoulders and neuralgia. I met the person who is currently managing it, and it seems that it is very difficult to maintain it. There seem to be various problems in the future. It seems that the city has been managing it for 40 years now, but I’m not sure if it will be returned to the town in about 10 years, but I think the maintenance costs when it is returned will be very difficult. He said that this building may also be caught up in the problem of earthquake resistance. Well, it’s still a long way off, but he told me what will happen in the future. Since I’m here, I’ll pay a visit. This is the approach to the shrine. I wonder if it was such an atmospheric place. It has a great atmosphere. This is the Inari shrine. This is the main hall. Just below this shrine is the old hot spring resort. This is it. You can’t go inside, but you can take a peek. This is what it looks like inside. It has been flowing for at least 1200 years. However, the amount of water seems to be decreasing. I have a reservation for an open-air bath at Yuuki Onsen, but I still have a lot of time, so I’d like to go to some tourist spots around here. It looks like it’s going to be sunny and scorching hot. I’m heading for Ryuzu Gorge, about 30 minutes from Yunoyama Onsen. I’ve arrived. This is Ryuzu Gorge. I’m here now, but it’s not that far. It seems to have Namera Falls, Nidan Falls, and Oku Falls. I think this is the promenade. There seem to be a lot of things to see, so I’ll go. I wonder if it’s a popular tourist spot. There are no customers at all. There was not a single car in the parking lot. Huh? This? I can’t find the way right away. Is it this way? I’m not sure, but I’ll go. It has an eerie atmosphere. The clouds are suddenly looking ominous. If it’s close, I’ll go there quickly and come back quickly. There are stairs. Gradually, we are moving away from the river and climbing up the mountain. Is it okay? Maybe the path is wrong. Are they trying to get us over the pass? We are going higher and higher on the mountain… is it okay? Am I on the right track? We are climbing higher and higher… Wow! Amazing! We must have climbed more than 100m above sea level. Is it okay to walk there? There is a simple path. It looks like we are moving forward, but we are climbing higher and higher, so the parking lot is not that far away. On the map, this is the Oku Falls right here, but it must be wrong… I’m going back. It will take a long time to go back. I’m back. This was like going to the top of the mountain… Wow! This is it! The worst… It seems to be 400m to the Oku Falls. It’s not that far. It’s not that far. It’s really easy to walk. It’s very different from the previous path. It seems like we can see various plants. Wow! Beautiful! It’s so beautiful. I want to go in now. It’s hot… This is Namera Falls. It looks like we’re going up a little from here. Let’s climb. This is tough… Now we’re going down. Wow! Amazing! Trees are growing out of the rock wall. It’s like a Ghibli world. It’s so amazing! I thought it would be shabby, but it’s so amazing! “Nidan-taki” is a two-tiered waterfall, as the name suggests, with a drop of about 40m. The amount of water is small, but it’s overwhelmed by the huge rock walls surrounding it. The waterfall itself is not very large, but it’s higher than I thought. There is no water, but why is it so impressive? Unfortunately, the road is closed from this point onwards. Let’s go back. We’ve arrived. This is “Yuki Onsen” , known as the inner sanctum of Hiroshima. The hot springs were discovered about 1500 years ago, and it is said that the history of Yuki Onsen began when a white heron was discovered soaking in the hot spring to heal its wounds. This townscape was developed in 1950. Currently, there is only one inn left here, called “Kagaso”, but it will be closed in December 2023 due to a breakdown in the boiler equipment. Repairs are expected to cost tens of millions of yen, and there is still no prospect of reopening. This means that there are no more inns operating here. Not only is Yuki Onsen declining, but the population is also decreasing due to poor profitability of the main industry, a lack of human resources, and poor access. This is where the hot spring town begins, but it is already in ruins. It is for sale. This large building is also in ruins. This seems to have been a lounge. The color of the river is incredibly beautiful. The only hot spring in this hot spring town is this private open-air bath called “Makoto no Hiyu”. This open-air bath was once called “Yumoto” and was open to tourists and local residents for free, but it closed in 2000 due to a lack of operating funds and the deterioration of the manners of the customers. As the hot spring town gradually declined, this open-air bath was revived in 2019 after 19 years in an effort to revitalize the hot spring town. Since I’ve come all the way to Yuki Onsen, I’ve made a reservation here, so I’ll try it later. This is written as Touji BAR, so I guess it’s not a cafe, but a bar. It’s a modern shop. It doesn’t seem to be open today. There are a variety of menus. There are Hiroshima tsukemen, pork skewer bowls, and a good variety of drinks. The only shops currently open in this hot spring town are this Touji BAR and this open-air bath. It seems there is a shrine here. I’ll go there later. It’s a really nice place. The townscape feels like I’m in Kyoto. This place has also closed down and is in ruins. It’s a really nice place. The atmosphere is outstanding. This is an inn called “Kagaso”, and it is the only inn remaining in this hot spring town, but it is expected to cost tens of millions of yen for repairs, and there is still no prospect of reopening. In the current state of this hot spring town, even if they spend tens of millions of yen to fix it, it may not be profitable. It may even go out of business. For the time being, this sign says that they will be temporarily closed, but it is really unclear when they will reopen. There is a river flowing next to Kajikaso, and I think the guest rooms are probably in front of the river, but it is a very well-located inn. It’s a shame. I will go to Yunokami Shrine. The shrine looks like this . We arrived. 2000 marks the 50th anniversary of the development of Yuki Onsen. This shrine is a relatively beautiful building, so it may have been rebuilt in 2000. There are votive plaques, so I wonder if you can get one somewhere . This is also a huge ruin. This is a temple. It’s closed. I don’t know if it’s okay to go in, so I’ll stop. This area is a lot of open vacant land, so maybe the buildings have been demolished. There is a stone monument in front of me. Now, let’s go into the open-air bath. It seems that you can get the key at the Yuki Exchange Experience Center here. Next to the Exchange Experience Center is the public lodging facility “Yuki Lodge.” Day-trip bathing is possible here. This is the only place you can stay overnight at Yuki Onsen. We received our key at the “Tourist Information Reception Corner” here. We picked up our key. It’s a two-minute drive from here, so we’ll head there by car first. The parking lot is here. The open-air bath is right there. Here it is. Let’s go in. It’s quite low. Wow! It’s amazing. It’s a pretty big bathtub. I wonder if this sign is still the same as it was back then? It’s quite old. Here is the changing room, and over here is the open-air bath. There is also a Goemon-style bath here. By the way, the temperature is just right. This one seems to be the same as the source. So this bath seems to be heated. It’s cold. It’s more like a cold bath. Right next to the open-air bath is a river. It looks like it’s going to rain any minute from the blast. This is the changing room. It looks like this. This is the toilet. It’s kept very clean. This is the toilet, so the changing room space is about this much. Well, it’s enough because it’s private. In the cold winter, there is a heater here, so you can rest assured. If you take videos or still images of the inside of the open-air bath, it is prohibited to take photos with people in them. If you lose this key, you will need to pay 10,000 yen for a replacement. The flow rate is 750 liters per minute. The spring temperature is 27.5 degrees. The spring quality seems to be a simple, low-radioactivity hot spring. It says that it is colorless, transparent, tasteless and odorless, but it has a faint sulfur-like smell. There is a shower right next to the bath. I think this water will just flow into the river. So, in order to avoid damaging the environment, it seems that it is prohibited to use anything other than the shampoo and body soap provided . I’ll go in for now. The shampoo and body soap were very smooth and seemed to be kind to the environment. It was quite hot. I thought it was a little hot, but I gradually got used to it. I think it was about 42 degrees. The fee here is 4,000 yen for one hour of use. Up to six people can use it, so the more people you have, the better the deal. It’s a very clean open-air bath. I wonder if it’s more of an open-air bath or a semi-open-air bath. It feels really good. By the way, I’m in it with my wife. It’s a hornet! This one is… a newborn baby… It’s a very luxurious time. An hour is surprisingly long. I’ll also soak in the hot spring. Ah! It’s cold! I thought I could go in because my body was warm, but this is heart-stopping. I got out. Wow, it was a really good hot spring. It was a private room, so I was able to soak for a long time. It was a shower, but the force seemed a little weak. Well, I didn’t mind. I think the hot water coming out of the shower is probably from the spring. I also enjoyed the hot spring. The spring quality is very good, and the townscape is very charming, but it is currently in decline. However, there are many popular inns throughout Japan that are so popular that people are willing to go out of their way to visit even remote hot spring inns, even if they are in remote areas with no entertainment districts, so I think it is necessary to find out why the inn is popular, and I think that this charming townscape that is not found in remote hot spring inns is its strength, so I feel that it can be re-established with wisdom and funds. Whether to target young people, families, or the wealthy, it is a small hot spring town, so I think it is possible to narrow it down to a certain extent, but I personally think that it is important to focus on where to focus. When I was about to go home, the lights came on. The lights are on and it is even more charming. Hot springs are a cultural and historical resource that has been loved by the Japanese people since ancient times, and have attracted many tourists from both Japan and abroad. Many hot spring resorts are struggling to make the most of their charms due to the collapse of the bubble economy, aging facilities, the slump and stagnation of the local economy, the spread of coronavirus infections, and other factors. The number of closed accommodation facilities and vacant stores is increasing, and the atmosphere of the hot spring town is eroding and the decline is accelerating. Not only Yuki Onsen, but Japanese hot spring inns are in crisis. The hot spring culture is being selected out of the times and the hot spring town is disappearing. I can’t do anything, but I will spread the word to spread awareness of the charm and current situation of hot spring resorts. This time I visited Yuki Onsen in Hiroshima Prefecture. What did you think? It was a wonderful area surrounded by nature and with a view like the original Japanese landscape. Although the ruins are noticeable and the scenery is being damaged, you can enjoy the atmosphere of the atmosphere of the hot spring town and the quality of the springs. Why not get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and relax in nature and hot springs? See you in the next video. Thank you for watching until the end.
