This Swiss Village Feels Like a Dream | Walking Tour of Zermatt 🏔️
Welcome to beautiful Zermatt, Switzerland! Zermatt is a mountain resort town located in the canton of Valais, in southern Switzerland, at the foot of the famous Matterhorn in the Swiss Alps. It is part of the German-speaking region of the country. The town has around 5,800 permanent residents, although the population increases significantly during the tourist seasons. Zermatt is located at an elevation of about 1,608 meters (5,276 feet) above sea level. The town is car-free: only electric taxis and horse-drawn carriages are allowed, which helps preserve its clean alpine atmosphere. Today a beautiful, relaxing and atmospheric stroll through this magical place awaits us. We’re making our way down from the town’s high point to explore its central streets, chalets and more stunning scenery. Before the 19th century Zermatt was a remote farming village, inhabited mainly by Alpine shepherds and farmers. It was known as “Praborno” until the mid-19th century, then gradually took the name “Zermatt” (from “Zur Matte,” meaning “by the meadow”). Early 1800s with the Romantic movement and the first mountaineers exploring the Alps, British travelers and scientists began visiting the region. The surrounding peaks and glaciers were largely unmapped and unclimbed. July 14, 1865: British climber Edward Whymper led the first successful ascent of the Matterhorn (4,478 m / 14,692 ft) This dramatic climb — and the tragedy of four climbers dying on the descent made headlines across Europe and instantly put Zermatt on the map as a mountaineering destination. By 1891, the opening of the Visp–Zermatt railway — later to become part of the famous Glacier Express route transformed access to the valley, turning the secluded mountain community into a destination for travelers. In the early 20th century, Zermatt blossomed into a favorite retreat for mountaineers, skiers, and wealthy European visitors. Grand hotels like the Mont Cervin and the Monte Rosa rose to welcome this new wave of guests, and the village gained a reputation for Alpine elegance and adventure. Then, in 1947, Zermatt made a bold move by banning combustion-engine vehicles, allowing only electric taxis and horse-drawn carriages. This decision established it as one of the first car-free resorts in the Alps and helped preserve its clean, tranquil atmosphere. Are you enjoying our walk around Zermatt? EWT, i have watched this video of yours every day (3 times day) for the past 2 weeks. It's my early early morning (4am) ritual while having coffee and burning elemi incense that smells like an eglise. I also take a lot of inspiration from the wood decor of the shops. Thank you for your wonderful art and perfect presentation of the sights and sounds.
It's incredible here 😍. I would love to come here for life forever…😇
