Eating Unagi at a 150 Year Old Restaurant, Atsuta Horaiken in Nagoya, Japan | #unagi #nagoyafood

Kami unagi with me at a 150year-old restaurant in Nagoya, Japan. Founded in 1873, Atuta Horikin is the creator of Hitsumabushi, a Nagoya specialty dish featuring unagi and rice. When I arrived 90 minutes before opening, I was nervous about the line of people, but my taxi driver reassured us that the food here is worth the wait. At around 10:00 a.m., somebody came out and started distributing time slots to all the people in line. We came back later for our time slot and were led into the restaurant to our seats. For appetizers, we started off with the fried unagi bones that were crunchy and lightly salted. Next came the famous Hitsumabushi set. This set came with the famous eel on rice as well as soup, pickles, and various toppings. There is a formal process for eating this dish. First, you eat a fourth of this eel rice by itself, no toppings. Second, you eat the next fourth with the provided seaweed, wasabi, and green onions. For the third quarter, you eat it with both toppings and broth, similar to ozuk. For the remainder, you eat it however you like. The eel here is delicious. I really enjoyed eating the unagi rice with all the different steps and was so full after finishing my bowl. Definitely give this place a visit.

I know the line looks intimidating but my taxi driver was correct and this was absolutely worth the wait!! Atsuta Houraiken is famous for their Hitsumabushi which is an unagi rice set that you eat in steps. It was so fun trying all the different combinations with the eel rice and it almost felt like I was eating a four course meal! The unagi here is delicious; so soft and slightly smokey with a yummy sweet and salty sauce. They have multiple locations across Nagoya with shorter waits but we went to their original location. ⁣

  1. Eh moment I saw the English words on menu that tells ppl 1. It’s a now a tourist trap leading into 2. Over charge for tourists/foreigners unaware of it and any locals in past get pushed out because of it. So yeah this is a past.

  2. Yeah I'll definitely give that place a visit right after I take my private jet to the effing moon 😂

Jokes aside, the video was quite enjoyable and earned you a sub. Maybe just come down to earth and meet your audience at our level. I love shorts like this because of the vicarious nature, not because I'm planning a dream trip.

  3. Oh my gosh!
    Looks so yummie!
The unagi spin makes so much sense! I want some/lots!
I'm going to cry myself to sleep now…
