散步也會胖的行程 x 這13家萬華美食景點也太誇張|古蹟裡喝咖啡、超過一甲子在地美味 x 老街散策|Taipei VLOG|yang and yang #萬華 #龍山寺 #新富市場
Hi everyone, good morning. Welcome back to Yang Yang’s channel. Today, as usual, we’ll continue following the tourist map of Taipei’s twelve districts. Let’s explore the Wanhua District together. Alright, let me introduce Wanhua to you. This place used to be called Mengjia. It was renamed Wanhua with the hope that it would prosper for ten thousand years. Wanhua District is actually quite large. It includes trendy Ximending, which is a popular hangout spot for young people. It also has the older developed area of Mengjia. There are quite a few long-established shops here. There are also some historic sites and temples. To the south of Wanhua is the nearby Xindian River. There are some wide open green spaces. And convenient transportation connections. So this all combines to create Wanhua’s unique charm. Today, we’ll start from the area around Longshan Temple to explore. Maybe check out some local specialty foods. Then we’ll pick a few spots from this map. These are recommended attractions nearby. Plus some favorite hidden gems from my friends. Let’s go check them out together. The streets of Wanhua at 38 degrees Celsius. So hot it makes you question life 😛 It’s about a five-minute walk from Longshan Temple Station. The oysters look big and plump. Adding basil makes it look super delicious. When I arrived in Wanhua, a friend told me, I absolutely can’t miss this long-established place. Chen Ji Intestine and Oyster Vermicelli (once voted the best oyster vermicelli in Taiwan online). Its broth has the aroma of dried shrimp and bonito flakes. After mixing in mashed garlic, The flavors blend even better. But it’s refreshing and not greasy. If you like bold flavors Don’t forget to try their homemade chili sauce It’s really spicy You can also take some home Also, many people say they like eating the oyster vermicelli especially paired with sausage Although the Chen Ji Wanhua store doesn’t sell it (I heard the Nangang store does, have you tried it?) But the Li family’s freshly grilled sausages next door are also quite famous Wow, look, have they braised this large intestine first? Is this braised? Yes, it’s braised large intestine These oysters are really huge. The large intestine actually has a strong flavor inside. It already has a certain saltiness on its own. Let’s try the oysters. The oysters are very plump and delicious. They don’t have any fishy smell either. They’re really tasty. Passing by Starbucks, Of course, we have to go in to cool off. We came to this Starbucks with an old house vibe. I heard Starbucks has been here for ten years. But I’ve never seen or heard of it before. I just happened to pass by here. And thought, hey, this one is really unique. They have siphon coffee here. There is a limited edition siphon coffee here. It perfectly matches this historic café. This old house is the Lin family ancestral home. The staff just told me they rent the first and second floors. The third and fourth floors are still occupied by some Lin family descendants. They come to take care of the environment here. The barista just shared with us about siphon coffee. He really likes this brewing method. Because siphon coffee lets you taste high, medium, and low temperatures. All in one coffee aroma. He said the temperature is very hot. So I recommend smelling its aroma when it’s hot. Wait until it cools down slowly, about two minutes. Then slowly taste the flavor of the coffee. While waiting for the coffee to cool, it will give off a light fruity aroma. Although it has quite a layered profile, it’s too hot, so I just asked the barista for some ice cubes. This is my favorite medium roast coffee. It has a bit of a nutty aroma. As for the aftertaste, I find this one slightly bitter. But it’s still pretty smooth. Upstairs, they just shared with us You can see the history of this old house There is a screening room here So later we can go in and take a look A story inside this screening room And the wall here on the second floor Is very special. It has an embroidered mural of the Starbucks siren This was done after Starbucks took over this place They invited embroidery artist Huang Lili To embroider a map of Mengjia at that time (referencing the Lin family’s embroidery display, blending famous spots like Wanhua Station and Bopiliao into the mural) Like this wallpaper on the wall Is that wallpaper? I heard it was rubbings applied on (cylindrical surface rubbings). They were applied by rubbing. They are still preserved. It’s not just a piece of paper pasted on. It was done using the rubbing technique. So it’s quite handmade. I heard that at its peak, this Lin residence housed up to 50 people. That’s a lot. We just saw its backyard. There are two storage rooms here. That’s because there were two households at the time. Currently, Starbucks only rents the first and second floors. What about upstairs? The third floor is still maintained by the Lin family descendants. Sometimes I come back to take care of it. The environment here There is also something very special Is the pigeon upstairs real or fake? It turned out to be fake. It’s fake. The stair handrails are also made of terrazzo. What we see now is the Dong San Shui Street Market. And the Xinfu Market. Both are located in this area. In Taipei’s Wanhua District. They are also local to this area. They are representative market groups. This place has witnessed Wanhua’s development. And its historical changes. There are three main markets here. Each market has its own unique character. Let’s go in and take a look together. Experience the charm of Taiwan’s traditional markets. This is a renovated old market from 1935. It preserves Japanese colonial architecture. It has gradually become a cultural spot where Taipei locals like to visit. It’s also an old building space that blends history and design. You need to apply for a photography permit here. Make sure to get approval from the front desk and the shops first. This is a hidden little bar inside the market. Wanhua World Afternoon Bar. It’s for those who love the culture of daytime drinks. A small bar run by Taiwanese, Japanese, and Malaysian owners. Then I’ll order a Highball for you. And then, I’ll have a beer, a shiso plum beer. Okay. They welcome you to bring your own snacks here. Grab a plate and head to the market to pick out some snacks you want. Blue one? Or the white one? We’re going to the market to find some things we want to eat. We found a small stall that specializes in salty clams. It feels like a super authentic Taiwanese bar snack. Here, you can choose half clams and half littleneck clams. We each bought 50 dollars worth. The Kinwa Sushi across the street is super popular. Lots of locals come here to buy. The inari sushi is filled with black sesame and white rice. The flavor is simple but really satisfying. Wow, it’s my first time taking a tray outside to order. They open at 10 a.m. here. You can start drinking and eating early in the morning—super lucky. Wow, oolong tea! Oolong tea highball. It’s really oolong-y. But it doesn’t taste alcoholic (Ms. Yang is less sensitive to alcohol). This one tastes more like beer. The highball doesn’t taste like alcohol. Your cup looks like water. Try drinking mine. The tofu skin is full of aroma. The rice is on the lighter side. The salty clams are flavorful and savory. Perfectly pairs with today’s beer. Here, you can steal half a day of leisure—just right. Chairs made from beer crates and tatami mats are so creative. The map shows the Shin-Fu Town Cultural Market. It’s located at No. 70, Sanshui Street, Taipei City. It’s a well-preserved public market building from the Japanese era. The main building is shaped like a horseshoe. That’s also a local feature here. It’s a rather rare architectural style. It has now become a popular check-in spot. It’s also where markets are held now. A cultural space for workshops. Kuang Ta Hsiang started out here. Yeah, the famous Kuang Ta Hsiang began right here. It started around Kangding Road in 1932. They produce Taiwanese-style roasted meats and pork floss. Xinfuy Market is recommended in Japanese travel guides. A travel destination in Taiwan. Back then, Mengjia only had Ximen Market and Xinfuy Market. So Ximen Market was where Japanese officials and nobles shopped. Xinfuy Market belonged to Mengjia. The place where Taiwanese and ordinary Japanese people shop. This is where regular people do their shopping. This Herbal Alley is located at Lane 224, Xichang Street, Taipei City. It used to be a folk medical center in Mengjia. Back then, it was also called Lifesaving Street. There are many herbal shops inside the alley. You can smell the scent of herbs as soon as you walk in. You can also come here to enjoy a cup of herbal tea. So, you should have some herbal tea here. Well, because it’s called Herbal Alley. Then choose herbal tea. The weather is so hot. Of course, you need a cup of herbal tea to cool down. No. 245, Xichang Street, opposite the exit of Qingcao Alley is the nationally recognized third-grade historic site, Mengjia Dizang Temple. It is dedicated to Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva. It preserves the single-hall architectural style from the Qing Dynasty. Inside, there are plaques and incense burners from the Guangxu period. However, the incense burners have been put away for now. But the plaques can still be seen inside. It comes from the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty Every year on Kṣitigarbha’s lunar birthday, they hold various rituals and celebrations here. It is classified as a third-grade historic site. Now, we have arrived at the famous Longshan Temple in Taipei. This temple is listed as a national second-class historic site. Along with the National Palace Museum and the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, it is ranked among the three major landmarks. It’s one of the top three must-visit spots for international tourists. At Longshan Temple, many deities are worshiped. For example, Guanyin Bodhisattva, Mazu, Emperor Wenchang and Emperor Guan Sheng So here, we can see some centers of religious faith. Next to it, there’s the Huaxi Street tourist night market, where you can experience historical culture. Feel free to use it. Just go ahead and pray directly. Thank you. Mengjia is the earliest developed area in Taipei. Longshan Temple has been the spiritual center of Wanhua since 1738. Legend says that prayers here are always answered and very effective. It is also Taiwan’s most classic square-shaped temple architecture. Every corner is so detailed. The more I look, the more I admire the craftsmanship of the past. It is not far from Longshan Temple to Yijiazi It takes about 9 minutes on foot. Riding a Ubike is faster; it only takes 3 minutes. We arrived at Yijiazi Restaurant. This place is recommended by the Tourism Bureau. It is also recommended by the Michelin Bib Gourmand. From 2020 to 2024 (and also in 2025). It has consecutively received the Michelin Bib Gourmand recommendation. It also won an award at Taiwan’s first 500 Plates event. It’s located right next to the Qingshui Temple’s founder in Mengjia. It’s a snack shop with flavors typical of Tainan. It has been passed down for three generations. The owner selects pork belly with a good balance of fat and lean meat every day. Plus their homemade pickled cucumbers. Sauerkraut and braised dried tofu as well. They make a signature braised pork rice dish. Sounds really delicious. Besides that, their braised minced pork rice is also recommended. Gua bao (steamed pork buns). And pig’s blood and pork intestine soup. It’s also a popular snack at the shop. If you want to try the northern flavor, you can have a bowl of rich satay-flavored pig’s blood soup with your meal. So their rice dishes, and the gua bao are probably all Tainan-style. The pig’s blood and intestine soup is likely northern-style. The Starbucks barista from earlier, he also recommended it. I asked him what good food there was here, and this place was his top recommendation. Sixty years of dining. The braised pork is so tender. And it’s braised thoroughly. Really well done. If you like strong flavors, I think this is one that won’t get boring, but has its own unique character as a gua bao. The bun of the gua bao is also quite soft. It’s soft but has a slight chewiness. I think this braised pork is delicious. I just took a bite too. As someone who usually avoids oily food, I still find it not greasy at all. I think it tastes great. I think adding cucumber is a smart move. Because this braised pork rice is cooked thoroughly, and has a strong salty flavor, paired with cucumber, It tastes very refreshing. It achieves a nice balance. No wonder it’s Michelin recommended. I think it’s pretty tasty. The rice grains are a bit firmer. But I can’t tell what northern rice tastes like. Or what southern rice tastes like. Next, we’re going to have dessert. It’s not far, about a 3-minute walk. This is Liangfen Bo. The bowl of liangfen in your hand, is more than just a small snack. It’s a part of the evolution of local Taiwanese sweets. It has the aroma of toasted flour. This is not warabi mochi. But it has a cool, refreshing feeling. Eating it in summer is quite refreshing. This is definitely a food made for summer. It’s tastier than I expected. Because I thought, At first, I wondered about this jelly dessert. What could be so good about it? Since quite a few people recommended this place, It’s because this place doesn’t have air conditioning, But after eating it, both body and mind feel cooled down. It’s really good. This is also recommended by the Tourism Bureau. In Wanhua, you can see beautiful old-style buildings everywhere. Walked just a few steps And ran into Mr. Yang’s favorite shop again It’s a long-established shop founded in 1965 It’s also called one of Wanhua’s four top tempura spots by netizens Is this your husband’s favorite place? He has to eat here every time he comes Here, be careful It has a pretty simple, authentic flavor This sweet bean sauce is really tasty Sweet Pig’s blood cake And then add Peanut powder This costs 45 bucks (feels very filling when picked up) The peanut powder smells really good The texture is just right, not too hard or soft. It’s not too soft either. Some pig’s blood cakes are a bit softer. They don’t have that same chewy, bouncy texture. But this place’s cake still has a nice chew to it (which I really like). You can mix your own sauces or follow the shop’s recommendations. Qingshan Temple has a history of 160 years. The movie ‘Monga’ was filmed right here. I originally wanted to try Chang Hong Noodles, recommended by the Tourism Bureau. This place has been on the Michelin list for five years straight. But it was closed today, so I’ll have to come back next time. Next stop, just a five-minute walk away. It’s an herbal tea shop that defies expectations. Lao Ji An. It’s also recommended by the Taipei City Tourism Bureau. It has been in business for over half a century. It was established around 1972. It used to be a key supplier in Wanhua. Supplying raw herbal ingredients. Later, it transformed into a healing herbal bar. They offer customized tea drinks here. Along with fresh herbal milk tea. And special drinks like the Energy Boost Tea. I saw they sell herbal beer (non-alcoholic). It’s a hidden gem. You communicate with the owner using small cards. Let’s also talk about how my body feels today. I feel like I’ve learned a bit more. The shop will prepare a tea that suits your needs. This is a custom-made tea just for you. The herbal tea here is slowly brewed by hand. The first sip actually tastes a bit like Japanese sencha. Drinking this in summer feels cooling. This contains houttuynia cordata. White crane reishi mushroom, centella asiatica, and also Gong Mei Gen. Because I don’t sleep well, and I have a lot of stress. Then I got hives. Also had bloating. My shoulders and neck were sore. Sitting for long periods. So I just drink this. My whole body feels sick. Drinking it cures all ailments. That’s what I’ve heard. The wall design also hides lots of little facts about herbal tea. I just chatted with the owner. He said it’s really tough to do self-media these days. He said sometimes, He has to edit a very short video himself. At first, he thought it was fun to come up with ideas. But then, When it’s really time to shoot, it suddenly feels like it’s not that fun. And then, sometimes I edit, sometimes I don’t. Then, I have to go record audio, recording it myself. It’s pretty tough. Yeah, everything is not easy. Talking with the boss about video editing is full of ups and downs. Walking slowly along the way, about nine minutes. The familiar red brick wall has appeared. We have arrived at the Bopiliao Historic Block. Right now, we are here. It is the historical district of Bopiliao It is located at Lane 173, Kangding Road, Taipei City. Right here. Actually, most of it retains buildings made of red bricks. There are also features like arched arcades, and also carved window frames. These are part of the neighborhood’s style. So this place also showcases the local history and culture here. I think the photos turn out pretty nice especially at this time of day where the sunlight falls is really good Let’s go inside and take a look to see what special features it has The atmosphere of the buildings here is often chosen as a filming location for movies and wedding photos The old street buildings have now become a cultural and arts hub You often find exhibitions or performances when you come in It’s a place where you can stroll and take your time to enjoy Just a three-minute ride on an Ubike to the night market to walk around and digest a bit Evening is the perfect time to explore Huaxi Street Night Market for delicious food. The night market entrance features traditional Chinese paifang architecture. Huaxi Street Night Market is Taiwan’s first tourist night market. It’s recommended on the Tourism Bureau’s map. This place is called Xiao Wang Zhu Gua. It is also a Michelin Bib Gourmand recommendation. Here, the signature dish is braised pork rice with shiitake mushrooms. They use pork paired with plenty of mushrooms. And the shiitake mushrooms are fresh. So the texture is quite rich. The most famous is the clear soup with pickled melon and pork. The broth is fragrant with tender chunks of meat. The meat has a nice chew to it. That’s why it has received for years in a row the Michelin Bib Gourmand recommendation. This is also a place our family often eats at. The flavor really suits our family’s taste. Honestly, the first time I tried it, I didn’t quite get the flavor. But the more I ate it, because of this flavor, it actually feels pretty unique. It’s quite appealing. And it definitely has to have shiitake mushrooms. For those who don’t like mushrooms, I don’t like this one. Its regular braised pork rice, Have we tried it before? The regular braised pork rice, has enough saltiness. But I think it gets tiring if you eat it for too long. But if you add shiitake mushrooms, it takes away that greasy feeling and adds more layers of flavor. Is it the mushrooms that attract you, or is it the sauce, or is it the rice that draws you in? Probably all of them. It’s the combination that makes it special. A brilliant complement to each other. Every time I come, I see it sleeping. From a kitten to a big cat. Yuan Fang Gua Bao is also a long-standing night market stall. It has been open since 1955. Right next to Xiao Wang’s Melon Soup. The place we’re going to now, is also recommended by the Tourism Bureau. And then there is also the Michelin Bib Gourmand commitment Recommended for several years in a row. I think it looks absolutely stunning. The plating is so neat and elegant. It feels like there’s a good amount of pickled vegetables inside. Actually, there’s quite a lot. Let’s give it a try. Delicate gua bao This one, its gua bao bun is also handmade by the shop. The bun itself is quite soft. Compared to the one we had earlier, the ‘Yi Jia Zi’ from this morning, it’s different. Different styles. This gua bao bun is softer, with a tender texture. Overall, the ingredients are quite rich. But the flavor is more A refreshing feeling It’s also quite tasty This place Actually Before we came to film We already liked eating here Yeah They use really solid ingredients And it feels fresh We’ve been eating and drinking all day Let’s have a cold juice to cool off Colorful fruits that catch your eye just by looking “Light the Night” was also filmed here It’s also the last ice dessert shop on Huaxi Street An old-school sweet soup shop, open since 1953 An elderly couple runs it, cooking everything by hand daily. I just saw someone introduce it saying It’s mochi soaked in sugar water. Then they scoop it out and sprinkle powdered sugar on it. The making process actually looks simple. But the flavor is quite rich. It’s also very wholesome. I think it tastes pretty good. I feel like I’m tasting an emotion. I’m tasting a story. You said how long you’ve been open? 72 years. You’ve been open for 72 years? Yes. Since 1953 until now. It’s already the 42nd year of the Republic. You’re 90 years old. You can’t tell (Mr. Yang’s Taiwanese isn’t good). You really can’t tell. That’s right. (Mr. Yang means you don’t look 90.) You look very young. What do you usually eat? I always eat mochi. You always eat mochi? So how old are you now? What do you eat to stay healthy? 88. You’re 88? You can’t tell at all. Yeah. What do you eat to stay healthy? The owner shared lots of memories with us. I asked grandma how she takes care of herself. She said she always eats sweets. I think it’s because she’s in a good mood. Eating sweets. Eating healthy. Thank you, Wanhua. For a day filled with happy eating and satisfying strolling. Also, thank you for spending the day with us. Remember to subscribe, like, comment, and share with us. Wishing you all to be surrounded by happiness every day. Which district should we explore next episode? Give us some inspiration.
