Hello friends, I’m Xiaolin. Today we are in Menglian County on the China-Myanmar border. This small town has a long history. It was once the chieftain’s capital. Every day, a large number of Burmese people come to the Menglian Port to attend the market. Let’s go to the port and take a look . Going straight along this road, we can see the Menglian Port in front of us. Across the port is the national gate of Myanmar (Northern Myanmar), and the capital of Myanmar’s Wa State – Pangkham . The houses across the river are all from Myanmar . This river is the boundary river. The other side of the boundary river belongs to Myanmar (Northern Myanmar) . Across the river are all Burmese houses. It doesn’t look much different from China’s because many of them were built by Chinese people in the past. I’m on this side of the river now and looking at the barbed wire fence by the river . This is the national border. This place is amazing. The two countries are separated by only A river market is right on the side of this road . In front of it is the port gate. There are a lot of Burmese and Chinese border residents coming and going. Every day, a large number of people pass through the port. Border residents of the two countries do not need passports. They only need to apply for border resident certificates to travel freely between the two countries, enter and exit the country . Generally, Burmese people come to China to buy things in the morning and go back in the afternoon . They carry large and small bags and buy a lot of things . They carry some daily necessities because there is a shortage of daily necessities in northern Myanmar . Many daily necessities can only be bought in China . This is the big trucks pulling goods at the Menglian Port. They usually pull Myanmar fruits to sell in China. Small trucks pull various snacks and drinks to Myanmar to sell various daily necessities, such as pots and pans. Burmese people shop online on Chinese websites. China took the express to the barbed wire. We arrived at the riverside , the Jienan River. Wow, look, barbed wire. Hehe, I went to the riverside path to see a long string of riverside paths . There was a warning sign in front, prohibiting crossing the border, otherwise you will go to jail . This is the border line. Ten years ago, there was no barbed wire. There were often small boats on the river to carry people across the river. For 20 yuan a person, you can take a boat across the border to see Myanmar (Northern Myanmar) on the opposite side. Fraud and crime in Northern Myanmar have been serious in recent years, so barbed wire was built, but there are still criminals who climb over the barbed wire to see what these Burmese people are catching in the river. Fishing in Pangkham, Myanmar. There are quite a lot of Chinese people over there. The market is just in front. It is now eight o’clock in the morning . There are many people going to the market, more than half of them are Burmese, but many of them can speak Chinese. The young man speaks fluent Mandarin. This is a specially built border market, where residents from both China and Myanmar trade daily necessities like fruits, vegetables, and common medicines (primarily for residents in northern Myanmar). It’s especially popular on market days like today. Looking at the steamed buns and fruits, there’s such an abundance of tropical fruit, and they’re so fresh and cheap. There’s a lot of this sour fruit (yellow-skinned fruit) here, very sour but fragrant, and worth trying. Peaches , plums, and lychees. I hear the crowds. The bustling market is just ahead . There’s a small alley . Small corn costs 5 yuan a bag. These are so small. This is thumb corn, right? It’s unique here. It’s the size of a thumb, very sweet and sticky. It’s rare. Look at these . What’s inside? Auntie , different, different , different. Sweet or salty? This one is sweet. This one has sesame seeds. This one has glutinous rice and brown sugar. This one has peanuts. This one has sweet glutinous rice. How much is this one? 10 yuan per pound. Ten yuan per pound. Well, let me try one. Take the biggest one. Auntie, please peel it for me and I’ll pat the inside. Four yuan. Please peel it for me so I can see. This one has glutinous rice, right ? Peel it and let me see. Is this bamboo tube rice? Yes, bamboo tube rice is different from the common bamboo tube rice. This one is cooked, and there is brown sugar glutinous rice cake inside. I saw that it is sticky with brown sugar. I took one to taste it and pulled it. It ‘s quite chewy and soft. Wow, this tastes great, very sweet, very fragrant, and very soft. It’s better than the common bamboo tube rice. Let me take this one. How much is it? One yuan each. Please peel it for me. Hey, this one is white , right? There are sesame seeds inside . It’s also glutinous rice . This one is glutinous rice. This one is perilla. Let me try it. This one is white glutinous rice with perilla seeds. Well, this one is better. This perilla seed is very fragrant and very long. It ‘s very sweet, delicious, and soft. The longest one I saw was one meter long, enough for one person to eat for a day. What are these things here? Pig skin , this one is cowhide , cowhide , this one is also cowhide, all cowhide , a lot of cowhide, this one is fried well. Here are some chicken feet. Look at the chicken feet. There are a lot of delicious foods here. Let’s take a look at these small doughs here. How much is this one? One yuan. Take this, then this , and then two of these. This white one is enough. This one is enough. Auntie, how much is enough for sweet potatoes ? What is this? A kind of pea flour is a very sour and spicy seasoning. The way to eat this pea flour is very unique. It is not eaten like this in other places. This is a simple earth stove burned with firewood . It is very primitive. Hahaha, look at this pot, fried glutinous rice balls, a very common local snack. Purple glutinous rice and brown sugar. A large amount of sugarcane is grown locally, and the brown sugar production is very high. Brown sugar is added to all foods, like glutinous rice balls. It is actually very simple. Just pinch one. It is very interesting. This stove, this wood stove, is great. The city uses natural gas. The Wa people (Wa The lady at the Dai Nationality restaurant makes a glutinous rice ball . Purple and white glutinous rice are a better mix. Common Dai nationality pilaf. The spicy pickles here are completely different from those in Xishuangbanna. These wild vegetables are spicier and stronger. This is pork . Give me one. What is this? Fish ball . Okay, enough glutinous rice . That’s enough. Let’s eat it. And then there’s this thing . What is this? How much is this ? Auntie, take one . Can you open it for me so I can see what’s inside ? Can I eat it directly? Yes , it ‘s called white ginseng. White ginseng, I don’t know what it is. This one also has glutinous rice in it . Yes, it’s also made of glutinous rice. Let’s try it . It’s spicy, very spicy! Very fragrant and spicy , with a strong flavor of chili, ginger, millet, chili mushrooms, and some meat, like hot and sour curry. Monks can be seen everywhere here, begging for alms . This is cut. This is dried rice, right? This is the dried rice. It was originally cut from a large piece. Look at this whole dried rice, cut into this shape. These are all Just like the rice noodle rolls in Guangxi and Guangdong, I’ll go to the front and cook a bowl of dried rice to eat . Over here is the famous jumping meat and beef. Because the beef is fresh, it was just killed in the morning. If you come early, you can see the meat is still jumping . The beef is sold before dawn and is almost sold out. I’ll go to this big pig’s head . The local soil is fertile, the beef and mutton are delicious, and the meat is very cheap. Look at such a big machete . Wow, this knife is so big, so big, so powerful . Then, you can buy meat and cook it here, cook it with rice noodles, cook it with soup, and eat it in various ways. You can process it at will. Look at this grandma smiling happily, hahaha. Everyone eats rice noodles, I’ll have a bowl too. How much is a bowl of rice noodles in a small pot ? 8 yuan for a bowl . I want dried rice and meat soup. Look at this big bone meat soup, it’s still hot from the earthen stove It’s very good, a very big fire. Mine is ready. Let’s add some condiments, chili powder , oil, chili, coriander , and some lemongrass in it. Local spices and wild vegetables, some chopped green onions, some pickled vegetables, shredded radish, minced garlic, and the seasoning is quite rich. The rice dried rice cooked with firewood is fragrant and smooth and delicious. After coming here, I like rice dried rice more and more. The taste is very fragrant. Look at the old man’s chimney , hahaha, handsome. This big chimney is made of iron. The old man is Burmese and doesn’t speak Chinese very well. There is jumping meat. I heard that it is a delicious food here. Jumping meat . Oh my god, what is this old man doing? Why is he naked? Hahaha, super cowhide. The weather is over 30 degrees, and it’s even hotter by the stove. Thank you, thank you, old man, for being so polite. He gave me such a big piece to eat. Hmm, very crispy and fragrant! Roasted cowhide is delicious. This is a big oven. The cowhide has been fried once . The wood is used to dry it. The old man said that drying it tastes better. That one is raw . This is the unfried cowhide, which has been boiled and dried in advance. This one is not fried. Later, I learned from chatting that the old man is the inheritor of the Dai ethnic group’s intangible cultural heritage of fried cowhide. There are many processes for making this cowhide . It’s interesting to look at this scale. Hahaha. The old man said that his weight was lost, but he found a replacement. This scale is really fun. Hahaha . The weight is gone, so use this as a weight. Use this battery as a weight. 10 yuan is equal to two batteries. This big battery is 25 yuan, too much. Smart, hahaha, grandpa is so smart. Grandpa doesn’t understand the dangers of batteries. If I can buy weights, I will definitely give them to him. They are all served on a large plate with some rice, which is enough for two people to eat. You can also use large bowls. Look at these big beefs , they are so red and fresh. Auntie wants to make jumping meat. The beef here is very fresh, and they are all killed and eaten immediately. If you come early, you can see the meat jumping and the meat is very delicious, because there are a large number of cattle raised in the Wa State in northern Myanmar. The Wa people like to raise cattle, and cattle are their national totem. The mountains in northern Myanmar are green and tender, and there are abundant rivers, which are very suitable for raising cattle . The Wa Nationality accounts for the majority of the population in Menglian, followed by the Dai Nationality. The Dai people in this area also love to eat beef. Now the fire is very big . Add some mint. The local mint is very, very fragrant! There’s chili peppers and some green onions in this huge pot on the earthen stove . Wow, the fire’s so intense! It’s like a real stir-fry of roast beef . It’s ready so quickly, hahaha. It’s done in seconds. If the fire’s too intense and you cook it for too long, it’ll become overcooked. Okay , this is stir- fried beef with spring rolls. It’s delicious ! This beef goes really well with rice. It’s tender , slightly spicy, with a hint of mint . It’s so refreshing and fragrant, the original flavor , and spring rolls again . This is a large portion. Look at the intense fire ! It’s quickly served on a plate. Such a large portion is only 20 yuan . It’s delicious! This is spring rolls . This market is so lively ! This is raw pork. How do you eat it? Do you eat it directly? Stall owner: Yeah, try it. This is sour meat, right? This is called Dai (Dai) sour meat. Dip it in chili powder and try it. This thing has a very unique taste. It has a slightly sour taste and the aroma of meat. It is wrapped in leaves (Donjin leaves). Sour meat is made by mixing raw pork and raw beef with glutinous rice and salt, wrapped in Donjin leaves and marinated. Hahaha, eat, eat, dip it in this chili powder. Hahaha, good stuff, the more you eat, the more delicious it is, you’re addicted. Hahaha, very appetizing. Sour meat is really a magical delicacy. During the Water-Splashing Festival, every Dai family will make a lot of sour meat. Your stuff is good. How long can it be kept ? This stuff can be kept for a week. If you put more salt, it can even be kept for half a year. Let me see what’s inside. I’ll see what it looks like. I’ll go to this meat, the sour smell hits you in the face, very sour and refreshing. Fermentation . Bye, uncle , it’s raining, a little rain. There are too many things in Myanmar and Thailand. Cosmetics, look at this Thai centipede plaster . Sister is so beautiful, sister, are you from China or Myanmar? From Myanmar. The Burmese sister is very beautiful. Thank you. Beautiful, beautiful. Hahaha , look at these small wooden stools here . What kind of wood is this? Look at this kind of wood . I don’t understand. It should be a very precious wood. Look, this is a wine stall . Cheers, one small glass of wine , okay, okay, such a fragrant wine. More, enough, enough, it smells so good, such fragrant rice wine . A glass of wine here costs 3 yuan, but the stall owner didn’t charge me. He treated me to a drink. He is so hospitable. Haha. The uncle who toasted with me is from Myanmar and doesn’t speak Chinese very well . Oh, there are a lot of fruits and vegetables here. This seems to be the thing used to make soup yesterday. A kind of spice , banana flower . What is this called and how do you eat it? I didn’t understand. Can it be eaten raw? Stall owner: You can’t order stir-fried dishes . This thing is so strange, I don’t understand what it is . There are so many fruits. Look at these tilapia and big catfish. Wow, it’s so lively here, there are too many people . Let’s take a look at this . Oh, this mushroom, look at this big red mushroom. This is the big red mushroom. What kind of mushroom is this ? This is the milk mushroom. There are more and more wild mushrooms in Yunnan now. You see, this red mushroom looks scary, but it is very delicious . Little bee, so small. This little bee pupa . What is this bee called? This is a gourd bee . Hahaha, it can sting people. This bee is a little small, but very poisonous . It is much smaller than what we have seen before. But these are the real wild delicacies. It moves and has a frequency. I don’t know why it has a rhythm, jumping up and down, as if each bee can count. Let’s take a look at the eel here. What is this? What a strange fish. This is the first time I’ve seen such a small catfish. It ‘s so weird. Look at the quail, is it ? Hey, this is a quail (actually, it’s not. It’s a wild bird, a protected animal, and its name cannot be directly stated). Little sparrow (actually, it’s not. There are no sparrows in tropical areas). Everyone, look, snails are the most delicious. This is a river snail , and it smells quite smelly . Let me go, this pineapple, not this gourd. This is a gourd, right? Let me see, it’s too big, I ‘ve never seen one this big. This is that leeks , right? Pineapple, broad beans, and konjac, I can guess because only konjac can be made into that shape. There are chili peppers in it . Spicy konjac. Try it directly, it’s quite delicious, but it is indeed spicy. Hmm , this one is ok . I’ll just take this piece of konjac noodles, it’s enough. This one is delicious and has a fragrance. Let me take a look at this later. This fog lotus is so big. Why is it sold for 5 yuan? 5 yuan per catty . It’s so cheap. This is the first time I’ve seen such a big fog lotus. It looks good, right? It ‘s too big. The two varieties are different. There is a small one and a big one like this. Hahahaha Let me see these various fruits. I’ll try one. Grandma gave me one to try . What’s it called? It’s yellow peel fruit. What’s the simple name, hahaha . It’s like lychee . Wow, it’s too sour, very sour . There are such sour things. It’s too sour. This thing looks like lychee , but it’s actually very sour . Um, too sour. The big machete, the kind used to chop meat just now , this knife is fierce. It was used to chop people in wars in the past. This market is so lively. There are actually not many villages around. They are all border residents who come to the market from all directions. I went and saw this thing again. Big leather belt , pea flour, rice flour. Look at the pea flour, it’s a bit different from the pickled vegetables. It turns out the name of this is sea boat. What a magical thing , it’s so big. How to eat a sea boat? Sister, stir-fry it . You can’t eat it raw. I really want to try it. I want half of this one because I can’t eat so much. I’ll taste one flavor and then half of this one is enough. Is this the rice flour? This one is banana leaves. Hey, banana leaves , um, that one is banana leaves . It’s made of banana leaves. I’m curious how it is made? Please have a little bit of each. This transparent one is banana powder. Are banana leaves made of banana leaves? Yes, this one is made of banana leaves . It’s amazing. It ‘s like jelly, slightly sweet, and tastes very cool. How do you eat such a big plate of this? It’s delicious . It’s the dregs of tofu . I thought it was made of rice. What are you making with this cowhide ? Hahaha, grandma said that cowhide is pickled and eaten . It is eaten with sauerkraut. The sauerkraut just now was mixed with that. There are so many ways to eat cowhide here , just like eating it pickled . The finished product is right here. Let’s take a look at this . This is the cowhide just now. This is the cowhide. This is pig skin. That is cowhide. This is pig skin. But the ways of eating are similar. They are all pickled and eaten cold. Hehehe, grandma is so cute, hahaha, this is what was mixed just now. What is this sweet water? Sweet water? Add all of these. I tried a small piece and it tasted sour, sweet, and spicy, a very complex flavor. Hmm, how can I describe this flavor? It’s fragrant, rich, and strange . Spicy with a hint of sweet, salty , and fragrant . Hahaha, these things are quite interesting. These aunties all came to buy vegetables with baskets on their backs. I don’t know if they are Dai or Wa. There is a lot of glutinous rice wrapped in rice . There is no rice. Oh, business is good , there is no rice. Look, such a big basket is all sold out. Business is good. Rice noodles , this sour meat, can be preserved longer. Let’s look at this pork . Fried pea flour here. Look at the dough. Wow, look, then you use leaves to fill the big pot and make the pea cakes here. Small snacks , hmm, not bad. Rice noodles, rice noodles, small corn. Let’s look at these . These grandmas are selling this . This thing is 5 yuan for four. Hmm, come on, four of this. Four of this. Is this made of glutinous rice ? Hmm , open it and let me see. Let me taste it. Can you help me open it ? It’s difficult to do it with one hand. Haha, let me try one. Hmm, this tastes very delicious. The flavors of corn and glutinous rice are perfectly blended. The small cake is ready in 5 minutes. This rice paste rice cake is a rare Han Chinese delicacy. Haha, there are still a few minutes. This is the 7-minute rice. There is very little rice here. Small sesame seeds are 10 yuan for 5 jins. Dragon fruit is 5 yuan per jin . Okay, do you want to eat it? This big dragon fruit is especially abundant here. There are all kinds of ducks and chickens. What are they selling here? Brooms, bananas, and big plantains . The aunt is carefully picking brooms. Wow, this dry rice noodle is a little dry. It’s such a big plate, it can soak a lot . Let’s take a look at these vegetables. This aunt is picking up big fungus. It’s 10:30 now. There are fewer people in the market. Not as many as before. The market here usually closes at 12 o’clock. We are going out now. It is raining, but it is very cool because the temperature is too hot. These are daily necessities from Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam , and South Korea. They are all messed up . They are grandma’s hats . The hats protect grandma from the rain. Hahaha, it’s rare. Look at grandma’s bamboo hat, the waterproof effect is very good. Let’s take a look at these things here. Are they from Vietnam or Thailand? I don’t quite understand , or from Myanmar . Look at this thing that looks like tobacco. I ’m not sure what it is . I think it should be from Myanmar, right? It ’s from Thailand. Some locals like to buy Thai products instead of Chinese ones. I don’t know why. Wow , grandma, let me take a look at your hat . Wow, it has beautiful patterns and a handmade conical hat. It’s so delicate. It’s great for keeping out the rain . Grandma’s hat is great. Look at this small bag. There’s also a colorful little flower bag here. How beautiful it is. It’s raining. These grandmas all wear their bamboo hats and conical hats covered with plastic cloth. Grandma’s little flower bag is pretty. Hahaha, okay, okay , hahaha. There are many young people from Myanmar here . There are especially many Burmese sisters and grandmothers. They like to come to China for shopping because this is where their ancestors have lived since ancient times. National borders are artificially divided, but ethnic distribution is continuous. People on the border have relatives and friends on both sides of the border, but their exchanges will not be reduced because of this . Look at how beautiful these little bags are. I don’t know what language is written on them. Wow, these little bags are Dai bags, and there is also this one. Look at this These are all Dai people. There are quite a lot of Dai people in Myanmar. Look at this black fermented black bean cake. It’s been drizzling. I went out now . The watch repairman is from Hunan. He has been here for 40 years . It’s been raining continuously. On the left is a big pharmacy. Many Burmese people buy medicine inside. These small yellow cars pick people up to go to Myanmar. Burmese cars are everywhere here. Look at the Burmese license plates. After the market, the Burmese people go there and go back to Myanmar. Every morning I come here early to buy things, and then I have to go back quickly after buying them. You see many Burmese people, carrying large and small bags of daily necessities , fruits, vegetables , and clothes bought at the market , and they are busy walking over there. Every day is so busy, and many young people are working in China. Look at the queues of people. This side is entering, this side is coming , these are all Burmese , and this side is leaving. You see, everyone is buying things and leaving. The life of the people over there is really not easy, and many things are not available. It is crowded . Some take buses to visit relatives in more distant towns. The border will be closed at 12 o’clock, so they have to go quickly. The border opens twice a day, from 2 pm to 6 pm, and then opens again. Wow, this port is really interesting. This interesting port is full of people. These young Burmese people don’t seem to be any different from the Chinese. They can’t stay in China for too long because of time limits, so now they are walking over here and back to Myanmar. There are many of them. Holding a courier package, what is this thing ? It’s made of dried rice leaves. There’s dried rice inside. This kind of leaf wrapper is also dried rice. You see, it’s a little hot . Well, there are many things at various express delivery points . They buy online on Chinese websites and then come to China to pick up the express delivery. Many of them buy mobile phones and other things. The phone cards are also Chinese, so there is still signal in Myanmar because the power grid and other infrastructure in Wa State were also built with Chinese aid.
