Shiretoko National Park, located on the remote Shiretoko Peninsula in eastern Hokkaido, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site celebrated for its unspoiled wilderness and rich wildlife.
The park is home to brown bears, deer, foxes, and diverse marine life, including whales and drift ice in winter. Visitors can explore dramatic coastlines, waterfalls, and the scenic Shiretoko Five Lakes, as well as enjoy seasonal activities like hiking, boat tours, and ice walks. With its combination of rugged landscapes and abundant nature, Shiretoko offers one of Japan’s most pristine and awe-inspiring outdoor experiences.
HOW TO GET TO SHIRETOKO NATIONAL PARK
Getting to Shiretoko is easiest by flying into Memanbetsu (for the Utoro side) or Nakashibetsu (for the Rausu side). From either airport, renting a car is your best bet, since attractions are spread out and buses are infrequent, especially outside peak season. Also, with a car you can linger at the Five Lakes (beware of bears), pull over for waterfalls, and follow the coastline at your own pace. If you’re not driving, you can ride trains to Shiretoko-Shari and connect by local bus to Utoro, or use seasonal airport buses. Whatever you choose, it is crucial to plan your transfers ahead.

ADDITIONAL TIPS:
1. It is highly recommended to book a room with breakfast when staying in Shiretoko. The area has very few restaurants (mostly in Utoro Onsen or Rausu). Most open late and close early, making the hotel’s breakfast a convenient and reliable choice.
Regarding dinner (and breakfast in some hotels), it is essential to arrive at your hotel’s restaurant on time. If you are significantly late, the hotel may refuse to serve you, even if you have already paid for the meal.
2. As with many other destinations in Japan, most public onsens do not permit tattoos. If you wish to enjoy a hot spring experience, it’s best to book accommodations that offer private onsens for a more comfortable and relaxing soak.
3. When booking accommodation in Shiretoko National Park, it’s important to note that some traditional Japanese rooms feature futon bedding laid directly on tatami mats. While this can be a unique and authentic experience, futons may not be suitable for elderly guests or those with mobility issues, as getting up from the floor can be challenging.
For greater comfort and convenience, it is recommended that travelers in these groups choose a room with Western-style beds. Many hotels and ryokans offer both options, so be sure to check room details before making a reservation.
