Hop aboard the Vivid Express, inspired by the Collared Bush Robin (the welcoming bird of Alishan). With a design drawn from nature, this train brings the spirit of the forest to life. Each carriage features a guided eco-tour. As the train gently moves forward, feel the allure of the Alishan mountain range. And witness the legendary “train against the cliff.” Take a walk along the Shui-Shan Healing Trail, sit quietly in the tranquil forest, and release your worries. Experience the healing power of the forest. Put on your rain boots, hop on a 4WD truck, and go off-road, deep into the Tefuye Tribe. Discover the hidden Noyoca sacred trees. Feel the warmth and peace of nature. Get up close to the trains at Zhaoping Station. Visit the “Kuba”—a sacred place only men are allowed to enter. The parking lot has become a playground for macaques. Oh my gosh! What’s the monkey king’s next move? A bold and shameless “robbery”! Feed the sika deer, and feel the gentleness in their eyes. Marvel at the vibrant colors of the lichens. It’s said that the lucky ones may even see the Rattan Vine in bloom. Hello, everyone! I’m Emily. This time, I joined a tour co-hosted by Lion Travel and Roots—

“Forest Journey on the Vivid Express + Shui-Shan Healing Walk + Tefuye Tsou Tribe Tour | High-Speed Rail 3-Day Trip.” On this journey, I finally got to ride the Vivid Express I’ve dreamed of for so long. It winds through century-old mountain railways, bringing a sense of peace and healing from nature. Are you also a fan of train travel? Come along and travel with me, Emily! Let’s hop on the Vivid Express Eco Train together on the Alishan Forest Railway. and have a deep conversation with the forest. If you enjoyed today’s video, please like, subscribe, and share! Your support is what motivates us to keep creating great content. (Day 1) I couldn’t sleep last night. I was way too excited. Today, I finally get to board the dreamy Vivid Express ! This storytelling-style tourist train was transformed from old Alishan train carriages. It’s Taiwan’s first eco-tour guided sightseeing train. To me, Emily, it’s incredibly charming— absolutely irresistible! This trip, I’m traveling with one companion. It’s a 3-day, 2-night tour. The cost per person was NT$17,499. Honestly, I was super nervous this morning— worried I might miss the train. But once I boarded the HSR and found our group leader, Kuba, I finally relaxed. 8:54 AM — We arrived at Chiayi HSR Station. We met at Exit 2. After Kuba finished roll call, we got on the tour bus and kicked off this long-awaited trip. On this journey, each participant also received an exclusive Roots Taiwan Day T-shirt, plus a NT$500 Roots voucher. Such a great deal! 😘 Our first stop—Welcome to the Zhuloo Tribe! Where are our friends visiting from? Taipei~ Welcome, friends from Taipei! So this area might be unfamiliar to you. We’re in Alishan Township, Chiayi County. This is home to the Tsou indigenous people. And we’re the only Tsou community located in Fanlu Township. Our tribe is called Zhuloo. After the Typhoon Morakot disaster in 2009, eight Tsou villages from the Alishan mountain area relocated and built this new community at the foot of the mountain. According to legend, this land was once a Tsou hunting ground for Formosan sika deer. To honor the footsteps of our ancestors, we named it “Zhuloo,” meaning “deer chase.” When the deer walk toward you, hold out a leaf and face them. Extend your arm high like this. When the deer see this gesture, they’ll nod at you. As soon as they nibble your finger, they’ll quickly pull back and go for the leaf. So don’t panic! Relax and enjoy it. Ahh—A-jia! It bit me! Who’s lying? Which deer bit you? Sika deer don’t bite people! After feeding them, you can gently pet their bodies, necks, or heads. Just be gentle and natural. They won’t run away. They won’t be scared. Just don’t touch their butts! And whether you’re a kid or an adult— once you’re familiar with the park, please don’t chase the deer. And don’t trap them just for photos. These adorable sika deer are totally unafraid of people. So healing and calming~ Remember to wash your hands after feeding them! Take care of yourself—and protect them too! Next, we’re heading to the “Yoguo Washu Theater.” Enjoy traditional Tsou songs, dances, and storytelling performances here. Alishan girls are as beautiful as water— Alishan boys are strong as mountains! Clap along with the rhythm! Don’t stop! Ah—ah~~ Ah—ah~~ Ah—ah~~~~ After the performance, I’m sure everyone must be hungry! Let me take you to “Omafi Restaurant” in the park. They serve creative Tsou-style cuisine full of tribal flavor. My favorite? The grilled sausages seasoned with Maqaw spice! Pickled mustard with bamboo shoots—savory and perfect with rice! And for dessert: winter melon & Maqaw tapioca—refreshing and light. I couldn’t resist and had two bowls! 😆 After lunch, I explored the shops in the park selling cypress wood crafts and fragrant essential oils. If you love the scent of wood or enjoy natural wellness products, be sure to take a look around! You might stumble upon a delightful surprise! The highlight of the trip is about to begin! We took the tour bus to Fenqihu Station. Ready to board the long-awaited Vivid Express to Alishan. As soon as we got off the bus, it started to rain. Everyone quickly opened their umbrellas. But Emily didn’t feel disappointed at all. After all, the weather is usually sunny on her trips. So this was actually a rare opportunity. I wanted to experience riding a train in the rain. To feel a different kind of Alishan — romantic and serene. Today’s journey starts from Fenqihu Station. We’ll pass through Shizilu Station and Erwanping Station. And finally arrive at Alishan Station. In the heavy rain and dense fog, The Vivid Express was already quietly waiting for us. So exciting! It was Emily’s romantic first meeting with the Vivid Express — in the rain. Though we almost ended up soaking wet! The exterior of the Vivid Express features deep blue and orange tones, The design is inspired by the vibrant plumage of the male Collared Bush Robin.

Inside, the cabin changes to the soft, warm yellow of the female bird. Creating a cozy and welcoming atmosphere. The most eye-catching part is its 360° panoramic driver’s cabin, Allowing passengers to enjoy the front view of the train directly. The “Observation Seats” come with 360-degree rotating chairs, So you get great views in every direction. The “Private Booths” are perfect for families or groups, offering a semi-private space. Each cabin is equipped with 8-channel surround sound so you can enjoy the sounds of the forest. It’s a real treat for your ears! The large glass windows in each car make sure that wherever you sit, You’ll have a beautiful view of the forest outside. Even more thoughtful — each car has a professional guide and onboard staff. They also provide audio guide headsets So passengers can learn more about Alishan’s ecology and cultural stories. Don’t forget the bonus: afternoon tea! Red bean scones, Alishan tea soft bread, Purple rice mochi, Plus a bottle of Alishan small-leaf black tea And a commemorative bracelet. So healing and comforting! This time, Emily’s determined to protect these treats. Not like last time on the “Formosensis”… When everything became “on the ground” delicacies, the moment the train moved! We’ve arrived at Shizilu Station. Shizilu is a transport and trade hub for the surrounding Indigenous communities. It’s the village closest and most connected to nearby tribes. After the Alishan Highway opened, Rail passengers declined. But when cruise-style trains began stopping at Shizilu again, visitors returned— Bringing fresh hope and opportunity for the community. Our guide in this car told us about a place called “Shizilu Heartbeat Café.” He says their coffee is amazing! If you ever visit, You should definitely give it a try! There’s also a hidden viewpoint here— A second-floor deck right next to Shizilu Station. You can look out over the entire Alishan valley, And even get a full view of the Vivid Express from above. Encouraged by the group’s enthusiasm, Our guide performed an impromptu harmonica solo! Let’s give him a big round of applause! 👏 Time to head for Erwanping Station! Here comes an iconic moment— The famous “Alishan Train Hits the Bumper!” It was such an emotional moment! This was Emily’s first time seeing it live. Totally breathtaking! How about you? Next, we arrived at Erwanping Station. “Erwanping” means “a wide and flat place” — fitting for this scenic spot. It’s one of the key transit stations on the Alishan Forest Railway. Right in front of the station is a popular spot for watching sunsets and sea of clouds. Especially in autumn and winter, the sea of clouds is truly breathtaking. It rolls through the valleys like giant ocean waves. Absolutely stunning. We came today especially to catch the sunset, but unfortunately, the weather didn’t cooperate. The entire valley was covered in white clouds. No sunset today— but lots of mist instead, which added a touch of poetry to our journey. Our train guide for this section led us on a short walk along the Erwanping Trail. It’s also known as the “Black Forest Trail.” Towering cedar trees line the path, so dense they block out the sunlight. Even at noon, only tiny rays of light make it through the canopy to the forest floor. No wonder it’s called the mysterious “Black Forest.” We stayed less than an hour, before the clouds completely swallowed the train. In the mist, the forest trail felt even more magical— like stepping into a time-frozen fairytale forest. Hidden near Erwanping Station is a little-known railway feature called the Triangle Line. This special track layout is used to reverse the train’s direction. Along the Alishan Forest Railway, only Zhuchi and Erwanping stations have this kind of triangle line. Up next, our Joy Ride Train took us to Sacred Tree Station. Sadly, the sacred tree was damaged by lightning in 1956, and further weakened by storms in 1997. It became a falling hazard. So in 1998, the Forestry Bureau decided to safely bring it down. Visitors can now admire up close this majestic natural relic. Around 5 PM, we returned to Alishan Station. And said goodbye to the Vivid Express in the evening mist.

Tomorrow, we head deep into the forest, using our feet and hearts to soak in nature’s healing energy. Tonight, we’re having a shared set meal at Shinxing Guang Restaurant. In this chilly rain, a hot meal is just what we need— comforting and delicious. After dinner, we strolled slowly through the mist to our lodging for the night—Gaofeng Hotel. We stayed in a cozy suite full of cypress wood touches. So warm and comfortable. (Day 2) Good morning, everyone! Did you sleep well? To start today’s journey, we’ll take the park shuttle bus to Zhaoping Station, then walk to the “Shuishan Healing Trail.” On the way, we also visited the historic Alishan Guest House, full of vintage charm. Built during the Japanese era, this guest house once hosted royal family members and top officials visiting Alishan. After WWII, President Chiang Kai-shek stayed here every summer for three years in a row from 1949 to 1951. After visiting the Alishan VIP Lodge, we arrived at the 860-meter-long Shuishan Healing Trail. “Close” — close your eyes and listen to the sounds of nature around you. “Exhale” — as you walk downhill, face the sky and release the stale air from your body. “Release” — tell your worries and stress to a tree hollow, and let it quietly hold them for you. “Lie down” — gaze up at the sky as you lie down, letting go of your inner burdens. This trail blends the culture of the old Alishan railway with a journey to see the giant red cypress tree at Shuishan. Walking here feels like stepping into a forest time tunnel. It’s incredibly calming for both body and mind. Here stands the largest tree in the area — the Shuishan Giant. It’s about 1,080 years old and towers 30 meters high with a majestic presence. Since it grows near Alishan’s main water source, it’s also known as the “Water Source Giant Tree.” After walking past this thousand-year-old tree, we continued on the 1.6 km-long Shuishan Trail. This trail was once part of the Shuishan branch of the Alishan Forest Railway. After service stopped, it was converted into a forest path. It still features the simple platform and vintage-style timber truss bridge. The trail is flat and easy to walk, making it perfect for all ages. Walking through these old railway relics feels like more than just hiking— it’s like strolling through time. You can quietly soak in the rich history of the forest railway. We made our way back to Zhaoping Station, a great spot to watch the trains come and go. For train lovers, it’s perfect for taking photos or just enjoying the scene. You’ll definitely capture some amazing shots here. After wrapping up the morning trip, we took the tour bus from Alishan Station to Tataka Visitor Center for lunch. That way we’d be fueled up and ready for our afternoon hike at the Linzhi Mountain Trail. Wow—so many macaques in the parking lot! Oh—really! Yeah, tons of monkeys! If you feel too tired to walk, just eat some “foxglove”—maybe Haha—instant power boost! But seriously, don’t try it for real! (Seriously, don’t eat it!) It feels really soft to the touch! Yeah—I’m a bit scared to touch it though. For lunch, we enjoyed a piping hot set meal. Dish after dish came out, filling the air with delicious smells. But my mind was already drifting outside— the rain was only getting heavier. I started to worry about our plans for the afternoon… But surprise—the rain stopped! We seized the moment and got ready quickly. Packed up and headed out. We boarded the tour bus and headed to the Shangdongpu Parking Area. We were on our way to the Yushan Trailhead to begin our afternoon hike. This giant Taiwan hemlock stands tall right at the 1.4 km mark of the Nanxi Trail where it meets the Yushan Trail. It’s about 2,740 meters above sea level. Roughly 600 years old. Towering into the sky. It’s one of the key landmarks along the Tataka Trail. Notice anything? Its bark has peeled off. That’s because from May to October—during antler-growing season— Sambar deer chew the bark off in large amounts. We’re still not sure exactly why they do it. Poor tree! When the weather isn’t great, you can take the Nanxi Trail to reach the Yushan trailhead. It’s a more direct hiking route. But if the weather is nice, you can take a different path— hike over Linzi Mountain. That’ll also get you to the Yushan trailhead. Since it started raining today, we decided to go with the Nanxi Trail route. It’s an easier and more level trail. There’s such rich plant life here. Even this wall— look how beautiful it is. Just gazing at it is amazing. Looks like an aquarium, right? So many different species here! When you zoom in this close, you can see an entire world. See that? It’s like a painting. Watch out here—be careful. Don’t touch that. But it’s actually edible! We usually say— you can blanch it in boiling water and eat it. But be careful—this plant is toxic. It belongs to the Urticaceae family— commonly known as “stinging cat” or stinging nettle. Look at the hemlock leaves— they look really cute. Yep, that’s what the leaves look like. That’s the hemlock tree. A monkey just showed up! Really—a monkey! A big one, too! Yep! That’s the alpha male. Whoa! The monkey king! The regal stance of the monkey king. Totally the monkey king’s stance. You watch him long enough, you’ll get it… That Monkey King has sharp eyes To our shock, he actually leaped onto one of the girls and tried to snatch her raincoat! Everyone screamed! Luckily, he didn’t succeed. (Was the King of Monkes planning to make her his unwilling mountain bride?! 😱) Even with the rain, we kept moving while listening to the guide. And before we knew it, we had arrived at the Yushan Trailhead. There are actually quite a few hikers attempting Yushan today! Rain or shine—these folks are true pros. We’re not exactly expert hikers, so we stopped at the trailhead and lined up for the shuttle bus. Time to head back! Tonight we’re staying at the scenic Meiyuan View Hotel. As soon as we arrived, the kind owner served us a warm bowl of taro and red bean soup. So comforting—heart and soul! Dinner was rich and delicious too. All the fatigue from the day simply melted away. (Day 3) Hi, good morning everyone! This is the view right outside our hotel. The rain’s been coming and going these past two days. And now it’s raining again. Today we’re riding in a 9-seater van to explore the mysterious Tefuye Tribe. The Tsou people are known for being agile. Even 200-300 years ago, they were fast runners. Legend says if you’ve been to Sun Moon Lake, you might know the story of the white deer. They chased it— and ended up at Sun Moon Lake. They discovered its beauty— lush mountains and crystal-clear water— and moved their people there. After a few centuries, they could no longer understand each other. They became different. That’s how the Thao tribe came to be… Alright, this is the ride we’re taking today— an open-top forest path vehicle. ”Lamborghini”— giving you a real taste of how our elders hiked back in the day. The struggle was real… (A prayer ritual—for safe travels, guided by ancestral spirits) As you walked this path, aside from a few water pipes we need for daily life, you’ve seen almost nothing modern. This is exactly how we want to show you our home. Unlike other places that install boardwalks to make it easier for tourists to walk— we prefer to keep it authentic. This is how the ancient trail truly looked. In fact, it’s more of an animal trail than a human one. Along the way, our Tsou guide pointed out that this wasn’t really an ancient trail. It was more like a game path carved out by wild animals. a hunter’s bento box— a bamboo-wrapped snack called “Wild Boar Ear Rice Dumpling.” Smoky, firm, and full of flavor— a true taste of indigenous culture. Such a thoughtful touch! Super heartwarming. The guide said if we went deeper into the forest, we’d see even larger ancient trees. But due to the rain today, the trail is quite slippery. So for everyone’s safety, this is as far as we’ll go today. Even though the weather slightly changed our plans, walking through this untouched forest and seeing the legendary trees in person was an unforgettable experience. On our way back, we had lunch at Lalaks Fire Pit Cuisine Restaurant. After lunch, you thought we were heading home? No, no, no— we haven’t visited the Kuba yet! The Kuba is the Tsou tribe’s men’s gathering house. It’s the center of tribal politics, economy, religion, and culture. It’s also where young men learn traditions, build strength, and take part in important rituals. It even has a sacred space where deities descend. Only adult men of the tribe can enter through the front entrance. Women are not allowed to touch it or go inside. In the afternoon, we visited the Wanglai Mountain Love Prairie. This wide grassland features unique and creative art installations. It’s a romantic spot for couples to revisit sweet memories— and snap some Instagram-worthy photos. Inside the shop, you’re welcomed by cool A/C and the fresh aroma of pineapple. Free AC, free pineapple cakes and juice tasting— what a sweet deal! Just like that, three days flew by— and this journey is coming to an end. What left the deepest impression on you? For me, it was during the Shuishan Healing Trail— when the character “藏” (meaning “to hide”) really stood out to me. It felt as if the forest was whispering: “Let your thoughts be held by nature.” Those silent secrets, gently hidden in the embrace of the woods. If you love nature— the maple season is coming soon! Hop on with Emily Aboard the Vivid Express — a forest train that breathes with life.
