泥だらけの山道に閉じ込められてしまった – ガードレールもなければ引き返すこともできない!

after leaving the rugged beauty
of Monument Valley behind, we set our sights on a place we’ve
never been before, Telleluride, Colorado. But what began as a simple drive
quickly took a turn we didn’t see coming. Passing through the quiet town of Dolores, our GPS rerouted spotted us down County Road 38. A detour due to an accident up ahead on
Highway 145. Seemed harmless enough. It started out as a beautiful drive that looked
like a normal highway. But what we didn’t realize was that we were about to drive straight
into one of the most downright terrifying roads we’ve ever encountered. In fact, I’m
not even sure you could call it a road. [music: “Woah… Woah…” Is it just us? or does it tick you off, as well… when GPS takes
you down a highway and all of a sudden it turns into a pretty much one lane. There comes a
car. Got to get over to the side. gravel road. I don’t know. But we just saw a sign. And it says
entering travel restricted area. And this is the road that the GPS took us to get to Telluride. County
Road 38. So we were on State Road Highway 145. And for some reason, not sure if it was originally
this route or it rerouted us onto this county road 38 for at least what are we doing? 20 miles
worth here. We’ve only been driving for 30 miles since we’ve gotten on it and we have 30 miles left
and it says it’s taking going to take us an hour and 6 minutes. But you’re not helping Billy.
It says in 9.2 mi we’re going to get back on Highway 145. Hopefully we can get there in 9.2.
Hopefully we can get there in one piece. Yeah. We cannot believe this. We just met somebody
filling a fifth wheel coming the opposite way. So, that’s good news for us. Let’s stop them.
And hi. Our GPS sent us back. Same. Well, when you get up there, it says not suitable
for trailers or anything like that. So, we’ve made a U-turn and have to go all the
way back. You may be able to do it in yours. Don’t it’s all but but it does say on the sign
not suitable for truck trailer or trailer. Double box. Yeah. Yeah. So you originally did come this
way, huh? Yeah. We just made a Uturn. Oh gosh, this is crazy. Two hours back. I can’t believe
that it took and we’re only like 20 something miles from our RV park. Oh my gosh. You got to go
all the way. Oh no. Yeah. I just We just wanted RV. Thank you. What’s that? Oh, cuz you’ve
seen the movie RV. Yeah. This is the way it was taking us to Tellide off of 145 highway.
Like it told us to take this. Yeah. Well, there was an accident, too. So, I wonder if it was
because of that. I don’t know. But Oh, boy. Well, good luck. Good luck for you. Safe travels. That’s
a Oh, you already been this way, so you know what’s to come. Yeah. At least we know we can get
out of here. Yeah. Yeah. Be careful. All right. The snow began to fall as we climbed higher
into the mountains. We paused, briefly, considering turning around and heading
back to Highway 145, hoping the accident would clear soon. But instead, we said a few
prayers, took a deep breath, and pressed on. I mean, it can’t get any worse, right? Oh my
god. No, because I’m pretty sure that’s pain. The onelane road finally gave us a break,
at least for a moment, leveling out with no drop off in sight. We were really hoping it
would stay that way all the way to Highway 145, but that wasn’t the case. In fact, the road
got so bad in places we didn’t even get any footage. Partly because we were too nervous to
even think about it. And honestly, I don’t think I could have taken one hand off the wheel even
if I wanted to. We’re talking about a muddy, rudded path, just barely wide enough to keep our
right side wheels on solid ground. And the whole time we were praying it wouldn’t start raining
because one slip and things could have gone from bad to worse. There was no music playing, no
talking, just the sound of everything in the van rumbling as we were riding out the rough
roadway and prayers whispered under our breath. Moments like this is when we wish we still had
our dash cam to capture these unexpected moments. Finally, the trail met the pavement. A stop
sign stood ahead like a finish line. And then it happened. Out of nowhere, a hummingbird
flew straight towards the windshield and quickly flew to the stop sign to our right. It
hovered at the stop sign, dancing up and down as if pointing at it. Then it turned and flew
straight to Michelle’s window. Oh my goodness. out in the middle of nowhere right here. We
just had a hummingbird come up to our window and like look in and like and go off like it was
uh telling us telling us it’s okay. I watched you probably I watched you the whole way. That was
funny as heck. Thanks for the show. Yeah, Brian has changed his shorts. He said I have to go to
the restroom. But oh my gosh, that was the worst ever that we have ever traveled on. Oh my. It it
started out as be just being frustration. Okay, we’re on this gravel road which turned into dirt
which turned into narrow wet dirt which turned into incredibly rough and it’s like an outback
type road that only ATVs would go on. That’s what we went on. I want to say it was like maybe
about at least 25 miles from the time we actually got on the counter. It was 30. I don’t know. But
my eyes like the strain uh in my head right now. It was a little bit of reassurance when we met
that couple with the fifth wheel. Their GPS also routed them through that county road. So it wasn’t
just us. Well, it was not reassuring knowing that that they had to turn around and we didn’t know
what was to come. They just turned around. Yeah, this being extremely narrow and extremely rough
and very muddy. And then on the last mile of it, it started to rain lightly. And we’re like,
please do not start pouring rain. That’s all we need is for this to be become a lead sled
and go off one of those cliffs cuz there, as you saw, there’s no guardrails. Wow. But how
beautiful this whole drive was. What? You didn’t think this drive was beautiful? Beautiful.
Yeah. But I’ I’d prefer just miss it. Well, the first part on the concrete was gorgeous
cuz we got to see a lot more of it because ever since then we were like what a relief when
we saw this last corner and saw this highway. We’re like I heard you heard you take a deep
breath. The last part I was like over like this because I mean I’m like I don’t want the van. I
don’t know. Oh, what a what a story to tell. Oh, and all that wilderness. Did we see a bear? No.
One deer and about a couple marmets. How’s it? All right. Maybe I should go to the restroom,
too. Oh, yeah. You can clean your skin. And I feel funny that we’re in shorts and it’s 43°. But
we’re in here, though. All right. And this is the highway that we take to Tellide, I think. Isn’t
it at this point? Right. 21 miles to Tellide. I’ll tell you what. I’ll tell you what. Never
doing that again. You got that right, sister. After the white knuckle journey along County
Road 38, Highway 145 felt like a welcome breath of fresh air. And just up ahead, nestled in
a box canyon surrounded by towering peaks, was a place we’d always heard about but
had never seen with our own eyes. Tellide, a town born from silver and shaped by
the rugged dreams of miners, pioneers, and adventurers. We had to pull in
here. We just saw a bunch of elk. We’re just chilling. We had to pull over again. There’s a whole
bunch of elk just along this whole road here. Tons of them. I’m pretty sure we have
not been through Tellide. There’s a there’s a elk running down there on the other
other side of that little camper. See, he’s coming this way. Oh, yeah. Wait, is
that an elk or a deer? That’s an elk. Yeah, there’s another guy in shorts. Yeah, let’s see.
There’s people in shorts. We’ve seen two people, two men in shorts. My people. In the
late 1800s, Telleluride boomed with promise. Its mountains rich with ore, and its
streets bustling with saloons, stage coaches, and the hum of new beginnings. But as the
mining faded, the mountains remained, and so did the magic. Today, Telleluride is known for
something different. Its stunning alpine beauty. its worldclass skiing, its festivals, and that
unmistakable small town charm that clings to every street corner and building. As we made
our way in, surrounded by peaks that stretch over 13,000 ft into the sky, it wasn’t just a
beautiful view. It was like stepping into a living postcard where the past still lingers in the air
and the mountains always have something to say. Well, we finally found a place to park.
We just wanted to stop and tell you ride today and just kind of check the town out
a little bit before we keep going. We’re not going to do anything too special here, but
pretty special just to come here. Oh my gosh, smell the pine. Yeah, love it. Don’t love
this cold weather though. See a guy in shorts. What do we have here? My people Oh, it’s funny. No, look ahead, my people. They got pizza. Oh my. That is a huge slice of pizza. Uh, can you help
me eat this? No. I Oh my goodness. You might have leftovers. Gluten-free pizza. That’s pretty
good size. Gluten-free pizza was a gluten-free pizza. And I’ll just say that. Yeah. Nothing
special really. Sad. I hate to give bad reviews, but it wasn’t bad either. No. Um I
wish we could spend more time here, but we were just uh while we were eating,
we’re looking at the map and decided to change our plans again and go a little
further. But stay tuned. We may change again. We’ll have to come back here again
sometime, spend more time. We saw online that this chop house. If you like a good steak
place and wine, this is really highly rated. Now, once again, it’s that time of the year
when we turn the van east and make our way back to Iowa to reconnect with family, catch
up with old friends, and soak in those moments that matter most. The roadway always calls,
but back in Iowa is where the heart resets. Don’t forget to subscribe to our

We’re Trapped on a Muddy Mountain Trail – No Guardrails, No Turning Back!
(EP 357)

ℹ️ About the Episode:
What was supposed to be a scenic detour turned into THE scariest drive we’ve ever faced. After a GPS reroute near Dolores, Colorado, we ended up on a road that started out with a nice paved two lane road with beautiful views to a narrow, muddy mountain trail with no guardrails, no room to turn around, and a steep drop-off.
Snow started falling. The trail grew rougher. Our nerves were shot.
But just as we reached the end… something happened that gave us chills, in the best way.
This is one drive we’ll never forget… and one we’d never take again!

  1. Holy smokes what a road!! The scenery was really beautiful , at least you can watch the playback and not be scared and be holding your breath !! Never trust the GPS again !! LOL

  2. Been on a lot worse road in a Jeep, but the scenery is beautiful in the back country. The chair lift there is awesome. It is nice to watch the planes come in at the airport. Colorado is really a place for great scenery. Have fun on the cruise. GO HAWKS 🏈🤓😎🥸

  3. Pucker time‼️ Gezz, do I know that feeling. Worst mountain road I’ve been on was going up to Mt. Washington in a 3500 diesel long bed. Paved but no rail and drop off about 3-4 in. from the pavement, the switchbacks so sharp we almost had to do a 2 pt turn. Had to close the mirrors so the downhill traffic could pass. Mountain roads don’t bother me, but this one—I’ll never do again. PS. The charge to go up was $65.00! Glad you got to the other side safely. Whew…

  4. Lived there. So many roads no shoulder, no guard rails, 1000 ft drops (hwy 550 between Durango and silverton). Not for the faint of heart or anyone with vertigo.

  5. GPS gave you that route because you washed the Gretch.😂 moral of the story? Don't wash the van first. Scary but beautiful route that nobody else got to see. The Gretch did it. Another reason Gretch is a great choice. Stay safe friends!

  6. BTDT! Used to RV 550 to Ridgeway, over to Telluride, down the Mancos and Cortez, back to Durango. Back roads, Ophir pass, etc. I get a Rocky Mountain High just watching. 🥰

  7. BTDT! Used to RV 550 to Ridgeway, over to Telluride, down the Mancos and Cortez, back to Durango. Back roads, Ophir pass, etc. I get a Rocky Mountain High just watching. 🥰

  8. THAT was a frightening road 🫣 Yes it’s ticks us off when g-mapping routes us onto precarious roads especially when we tow the rv. Have needed to back out of gps predicaments 😬 We now have a Garmin gps that can be programmed with our height and length but it’s not fool proof. We take a road atlas along and usually run a second gps for additional info.

  9. I think I was holding my breath watching this. I loved the look Michelle gave you when you said it was a beautiful drive😂 We were on a road like that on our way to Mt Pisgah Campground along the Blue Ridge Parkway. We have a 25ft Lance, we couldn’t see the road on many tight, hairpin curves. God was watching over us! Thankfully, no one was coming the opposite way, we wouldn’t have made it. You have to make a plan to go back to Telluride! It’s so beautiful! We camped at Matterhorn Campground. It was so pretty & peaceful! Have you considered adding the dates you are traveling to your videos? It would be nice to know, especially how the weather & crowds are at that time. Thanks so much! We love your videos ❤️

  10. I loved living in Colorado 🥰,but we had Subaru’s with AWD and truck’s with4X4. If the road says you need chains in the snow, or has chain mesh on the cliff side…..it is not for you. There are rock slides, and fairly unsafe. It is beautiful though! Just hang close to the mountain. 🏔️

  11. Ha! That road feels like every road we took to go skiing. Every. Single. Time. When we’d get to the lodge I’d have to go potty too!! But, I was a kid (mom was a ski instructor/patrol) and that’s what the roads were like in the 70s/80s. Ahh, memories 😂😂

  12. Nothing 'better' than being on the drop off cliff side of the vehicle with absolutely no control of your destiny.
It happened for us many times in our 28' airstream motorhome. I am positive it took years off of my life. In the back roads of Oregon and Washington. But. What an adventure!
    Great stories to tell.
    We 'lived'. 😅
