駅前の雑踏に紛れるように、ひとつの寺が静かに佇んでいた。町田駅すぐの繁華街、そのにぎやかな通りの途中にある浄運寺は、気づかなければ通り過ぎてしまうほど自然に街に溶け込んでいる。1577年創建の日蓮宗の寺。境内に入ると、風鈴が風に揺れ、石碑には江戸時代に起きた盗賊との抗争の記録が刻まれていた。通りの喧騒とは対照的に、そこには時間の層が静かに重なっていた。再建から百年近い本堂の前に立つ日蓮像が見つめる先には、昼と夜で表情を変えるこの町の、もうひとつの顔がある。戦後の闇市の名残を感じさせる仲見世商店街、開いたり閉じたりを繰り返すシャッター、そのすぐ奥に、変わらず続く祈りの場があるということ。そのことに気づいたとき、騒がしさに囲まれたこの街にも、深く静かな記憶の芯があるのだと知る。にぎわいのすぐ隣にある静けさに、今回はそっと足を踏み入れました。
