Hi everyone, I’m A-Han. Today’s episode is about a trip to Taichung. What route will I take you on ? It’s Taichung’s Zhongxing Expressway Route 200. Along the way, I’ll introduce the history of Dali and Wufeng, explore Wufeng Old Street, and finally, visit the platform on the Wangyue Peak hiking trail for panoramic views of Taichung . It’s truly exciting! Right? Before we begin, please like, subscribe, and activate the bell. If you want to keep watching , follow A-Han on your journey . Everyone, A-Han is clearly at Asia University right now , with lush green rice paddies behind him. You can probably guess what route I’m going to introduce today : Taichung’s Route 200. Let’s get started! Speaking of Route 200, we have to start with the earlier Route 100 [from Tanzi to the Provincial Council]. That’s not the current Fuxing Expressway Route 100. I’m sure Taichung veterans will know which Route 100 I’m talking about, right? Before the merger of Taichung County and Taichung City, competition for passenger transportation along Wufeng, Dali Zhongxing Road, and Tanzi was fierce. Route 100 was already the golden provincial highway for Taichung passenger transportation in the 1980s. After the implementation of the 4-digit numbering system for passenger transportation, it was once changed to 6100. After the merger of Taichung County and Taichung City , this line was transferred to the management of the Taichung City Government, and the route number was changed back to 100. It was first extended to Asia University and then to Fengyuan at the end of Tanzi . On August 24, 2017, the Taichung City Transportation Bureau decided to cut Route 100 into three lines . Route 01, Route 901 and the 901 branch line will be opened on July 1, 2022, in conjunction with the opening of the main bus line. Route 201 will be renamed the Zhongxing Main Route 200. Many people have asked why the Provincial Council was located in Wufeng. In fact, after World War II , the Nationalist government first established the “Taiwan Provincial Council” on Nanhai Road in Taipei City in 1946. Later, the Executive Yuan promulgated the “Organizational Regulations of the Taiwan Provincial Provisional Provincial Council” and the Taiwan Provincial Council was dissolved and replaced by the Taiwan Provincial Provisional Provincial Council . Due to political factors, the political environment at that time was a state of confrontation between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait . The central government The air raid evacuation policy was promoted , so in 1958 the temporary provincial council was moved to the meeting building in Wufeng. The provincial council was officially established the following year. After the Taiwan Provincial Council was officially abolished in 1998, the park was renamed the “Taiwan Provincial Council Memorial Park”. The Taiwan Provincial Council Meeting Building, Chaoqin Hall, and Councillors’ Hall in the park were listed as historical sites in 2008. On December 16, 2019, the park was renamed the Legislative Yuan Democratic Political Affairs Park, but the name “Taiwan Provincial Council Memorial Park” was still retained. When you mention the place name Caohu, does everyone think of Xiao I often hear the fortune car playing Dali Caohu Taro Ice downstairs at home. Caohu Taro Ice is back! There really is a place called Caohu . It’s located in the area around Zhongxing Road in Dali City . The old name of Caohu was Caoao. It is located in the southern part of Dali District, Taichung City. It is roughly west of today’s Zhongxing Road Section 1, south of Dali River, and north of Caohu River. Hundreds of years ago, this place was a depression with gathered grass, so it was called Caoao. Later, because Caoao and Caohu have similar pronunciations in Taiwanese , it was changed to Caohu. Why is Caohu’s taro ice so famous? In fact, it was because Chiang Ching-kuo had eaten taro ice at “Meifang Taro Ice City” in the 1980s , but he always came and went in a hurry. However, Chiang Ching-kuo praised it every time after eating it. Gradually, the famous reputation of “Dali Caohu Taro Ice” could be heard in major cities. Dali’s Zhongxing Business District is located in the area of Zhongxing Road Section 2. This area has always been a major transportation route to Taichung’s old city and Nantou. It is a must-go place every day. The Neixin Market next to it also attracts a lot of people , thus gradually forming a business district. The Neixin Market next to the business district has a history of more than 50 years. It was the first pilot market in Dali and it was also the most prosperous area in Dali from the 1960s to the 1980s. This market witnessed the transformation of Dali . The entrance of the market used to be at the intersection of Lane 85, Defang Road Section 1 and Zhongxing Road Section 2. There was also an archway standing at the entrance of the lane, but unfortunately, it was demolished in 2022. Neixin Market is divided into morning market and evening market. The morning market is currently located at the intersection of Xinren Road Section 3 and Zhongxing Road Section 2 , while the evening market is close to Zhongxing Road Section 2 and At the intersection of Dongrong Road, the entrance is just above Section 2 of Zhongxing Road. The dusk market has many delicious local delicacies such as braised food , scallion pancakes, and wonton noodles, which are well worth a try. Taichung’s Third Market originated in 1922 during the Japanese era. At the beginning, it was established in Sakura-cho (located behind today’s Taichung Station) and was called the “Sakura-cho Consumer Market.” As the surrounding areas developed, the Sakura-cho Consumer Market was insufficient to meet the population demand , so a market was established in Shikishima-cho on the southwest side. Later, in May 1932, it moved to its current location and was renamed Shikishima-cho Market (it was renamed the Third Market only after the war). Like the Second Market, the Third Market also has a temple that protects the market vendors and surrounding residents. It is the Yusheng Temple , which was founded in 1947 and mainly deifies Mazu. The Mazu of the Yusheng Temple was transferred from the Yuzun Temple in Caohu, Yilan. This temple has a history of nearly 80 years. Taichung’s First and Second Markets both have a long history. The Second Market was established in 1917 during the Japanese era. The exterior building adopts a three-wing radial structure with a hexagonal main building as the core. When the Second Market was first established, it served the Japanese with fine goods and higher prices. Therefore, it is also called the Japanese market and the rich market. There is a Wude Temple in the market, which mainly worships Guan Yu and Mazu, and is the center of faith for the vendors in the Second Market. There are many time-honored and affordable delicacies in the market, such as Lao Lai Soy Milk and Black Tea, Shanhe Braised Pork Rice, Wang Family Turnip Cake, etc. These stalls are representative of time- honored vendors. Speaking of Taichung’s larger and more time-honored department stores , in addition to the closed Lai Lai Department Store, Kuangsan SOGO and Far Eastern Department Store on Taichung Boulevard, there is another one, which is the Zhongyou Department Store on Sanmin Road in the Yizhong Business District. Zhongyou Department Store opened on April 30, 1992 and was known as the largest department store in Taiwan. At that time, it also had a children’s playground, a cinema, a bowling alley, a nightclub, and other places. The parent company of Zhongyou Department Store is Zhongwu Group. In 1997, Zhongyou Department Store was incorporated into the department store of Zhongyou Construction and applied for listing and listing under the name of Zhongyou Department Store. However, the company’s turnover has not improved. After the 1999 financial crisis, the department store suffered repeated losses, only turning a profit in 2010. Currently, Chung You Department Store plans to open a Changhua store in 2026 and will adopt the adjacent 2,000-ping Chenggong Park to transform it into Changhua’s Civic Plaza. The Wangyue Peak Trail is located on Chenggong Road in Dali, Taichung. If you’re taking a bus here , get off at the Ministry of Education’s National Education Department stop. Walk along Chenggong Road and you’ll see the basketball court next to the fitness center. Across from it is the entrance to the Wangyue Peak Xiantang Trail. Today, we’ll take you on a simple hike up this trail to see the beauty of Greater Taichung. We actually recommend visiting at dusk for even more stunning views. The climb up the trail is about 300 meters, a very easy one. It’s perfect for beginners who don’t want to climb a difficult hill. This is a great place to stroll and enjoy the scenery. Afterwards, we’ll continue along the trail to connect to the Zhongxinlong Trail, where even more expansive views lie ahead. Speaking of Wufeng, we can’t help but mention the history of the Lin family. Just how large was the Wufeng Lin family’s territory? In 1746, during the Hongli reign of the Qing Dynasty, Lin Shi crossed the sea to settle in Taiwan. However, because Lin Shi was believed by the Qing government to be involved in the Lin Shuangwen Incident , in order to avoid his family from being affected , Lin Shi’s eldest daughter-in-law Lin Huangduanniang took her child Lin Jiayin from Dalizhu to Azhaowu (slip of the tongue) to revive the family. Lin Jiayin’s eldest son Lin Dingbang and second son Lin Dianguo were divided into two systems, Xiacuo and Dingcuo. Lin Dingbang ‘s son Lin Wencha later joined the army. Lin Wencha rose all the way to the rank of land admiral. He quelled the rebellion of the Keelung Small Knife Society and swept through southern Fujian and Zhejiang to eliminate the remnants of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom. After returning to Taiwan, he resolved the Dai Chaochun Rebellion . Lin Wencha began to acquire a large amount of land everywhere , which doubled the Lin family’s real estate. In addition, after quelling the Dai Chaochun Incident, Therefore, the Qing government granted the Lin family the camphor monopoly rights in Fujian Province (including Taiwan at the time). The Lin family transformed into the largest family in central Taiwan. Entering the Japanese era , the Wufeng Lin family relied on the camphor monopoly rights, farmland reputation, and power to reach the peak and became one of the five largest families in Taiwan. At this time, the patriarch had been replaced by Lin Xiantang, and the family had become an artistic family. Lin Xiantang and his father Lin Wenqin were very fond of literature, drama, and art , so they promoted local education and established a middle school for Taiwanese children. They also co-founded Taichung No. 1 Middle School with local people. After Taiwan’s restoration, Lin Xiantang continued to promote education. They believed that the country Public education is the most fundamental thing for a country. Thus, Taichung County Wufeng Elementary School, Private Laiyuan Middle School, and Lin Lietang of Yanping University were successively established. Taichung Prefecture Private Taichung Commercial College was also established. The Laiyuan Middle School we just mentioned is today’s Mingtai High School . The Wufeng Lin family is listed as one of the “Five Great Families of Taiwan” along with the Yan family of Keelung, the Lin family of Banqiao, the Gu family of Lukang, and the Chen family of Kaohsiung. From 1746 to the present , the Wufeng Lin family has been in Taiwan for nearly 280 years . From their initial business ventures to the promotion of cultural education, many descendants have carried forward their legacy, continuing to influence Taiwan’s history. As we leave Mingtai High School and Laiyuan, Walk down Wenhua Lane and turn right onto Minsheng Road to arrive at the Wufeng Lin Family Gongbao Residence Park. The Gongbao Residence Park at Wufeng Lin Family currently has three buildings open to the public: Gongbao Residence, Dahua Hall, and Caocuo, which originally belonged to the lower house. However, we won’t be going into Gongbao Residence or Dahua Hall today, so we’ll just give you a brief tour of Caocuo . If you want to visit Gongbao Residence and Dahua Hall, you’ll need to buy a separate ticket. The full ticket is NT$250 per person, and the price for Taichung residents is NT$200. Opening hours are Monday to Sunday, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM, with tickets sold out until 4:00 PM. Please note the time. Wufeng, Taichung, was first developed around Minzhu Street and Minquan Road. Early development of Wufeng centered around this area, with the township office, market, and theater all located there. After the 1980s, the city center began to develop outward, and the original old street gradually declined . Due to its age, dilapidation, and mess , it was renovated in 2018 and renamed Azhaowu Old Street. Okay, we’ve covered the landscape and attractions along Route 200. That’s all for today’s episode. I’m Ah Han. If you like our channel, please like, subscribe, and turn on the bell. Bye Bye!
