【ホテル探訪】センス抜群!! アートとデザインが交差する「Ace Hotel Kyoto」唯一無二のカルチャーホテル【京都】
Hello everyone, this is architect Okada from Vacation . I’m visiting Kyoto, a city where vestiges of the good old days blend seamlessly with modern sensibilities. In addition to the history and culture passed down as the capital for a thousand years, this city is alive with contemporary art and design, and every visit offers something new. The unique atmosphere, where tradition and modernity coexist comfortably, is one of Kyoto’s greatest charms. Today, I’m exploring the Ace Hotel Kyoto, located in the heart of Kyoto. This hotel , the first in Japan for the Seattle-based Ace Hotel brand, offers a unique experience of culture and design. It ‘s the perfect hotel for an architect’s vacation, so I’m excited to fully enjoy its charms. Let’s take a look inside. Ace Hotel Kyoto opened in 2020 inside Kyoto’s landmark ShinPuhKan. Directly connected to Karasuma-Oike Station, it’s conveniently located for sightseeing. In addition to offering accommodation, it also serves as a hub for spreading new culture to the city of Kyoto through its restaurants, cafes, and galleries. Let’s take a look inside. This building, a renovated version of the former Kyoto Central Telephone Exchange, was designed by Kengo Kuma & Associates and Commune Design of Los Angeles. Comprised of two buildings—a “preserved building” that makes use of the old structure and an “extended building” —its unique architecture allows past and present to coexist. Upon entering the entrance, you’ll find a modern space, characterized by Kuma’s signature use of wood, evoking a sense of warmth amidst the sense of solidity. The reception counter is crafted from hammered copper. The handcrafted texture softly reflects light, adding a unique depth to the space. Fabric art created by Shobu Gakuen, a facility for people with disabilities in Kagoshima Prefecture, graces the wall directly in front of the entrance. To the right of the entrance is the high-ceilinged, open-feeling public lobby space. This space is open to both guests and non-guests, and serves as a cafe and lounge, making it a popular spot for a variety of occasions. The wooden exterior continues into the interior, where light, steel-pipe lighting by Commune Design complements the space. A diverse international community gathers here, working, chatting, reading, relaxing, and more. This space truly embodies the intersection of culture and creativity. Next, we move deeper into the lobby to the gallery space. Ace Hotel Kyoto values art and music culture, regularly hosting events within the hotel. One of the hotel’s greatest draws is its opportunity to experience art and culture, not just stay . Now, let’s head to the guest rooms. The elevator hall, finished with striking deep green Shigaraki ware tiles, exudes a sense of calm yet strength. At the end of the corridor, neon art by Nobuhiko Kitamura, founder of Hysteric Glamour, complements the Ace Hotel’s unique blend of playfulness and culture. The elevator’s interior features vertical lattice wood, subtly incorporating Japanese elements into the modern space. The hotel’s tapestry-style signs, featuring pop colors, shapes, and fonts by dyeing artist Samiro Yunoki, add a charming touch. The hallways, like those in a renovated building, also have high ceilings and a spacious feel. The lush, green courtyard scenery outside the windows is soothing. All rooms at Ace Hotel Kyoto are spacious, measuring over 30 square meters, and offer nine types, from standard rooms to suites. Our choice this time was the Historic Twin, a special room that blends the charm of historic architecture with modern design. Let’s take a look inside. Our room, a 48-square-meter Historic Twin, is designed with the concept of “East Meets West,” incorporating Japanese traditions and craftsmanship throughout, while maintaining a modern and functional design. A separate living space is located at the front of the room, furnished with an L-shaped sofa. The space exudes Ace Hotel’s unique style, with graphic patterns and vibrant fabrics, including cylindrical cushions tied with a seat cushion belt. The walls are decorated with works by dyeing artist Samiro Yunoki, adding a sense of strength and warmth to the space. The subdued ceiling in the living room is reminiscent of a ribbed ceiling. The dark gray washi paper wallpaper adds a calming touch. Opposite the sofa is a work desk and minibar. Their symmetrical layout is striking, beautifully arranged. A record player and a Tivoli Audio radio are placed on the work desk, both of which are available for use. Next to them is the minibar, offering a selection of coffees and teas. Along with snacks, they even offer Ace Hotel-exclusive socks, a surprise! Opening the perforated sliding door reveals a mini-fridge. Next, let’s take a look at the bedroom area. The beds are arranged on either side of the aisle, creating a distinctive layout. Taking advantage of the existing building height, the bedroom area boasts a spacious ceiling height of approximately 3.6 meters. A Pendleton blanket drapes over the bed, and curtains by Minä Perhonen adorn the windows. The exquisite color balance adds a touch of elegance and warmth to the room. Japanese crafts are incorporated throughout, with tatami mats used for the bedside table and a bamboo blind used for the screen separating the living room and bedroom . Blending old and new, the space is styled with the theme of “East Meets West,” evoking the unique character of Ace Hotel Kyoto. Next, let’s take a look at the washroom and bathroom area. The entire bathroom wall is clad in wood, creating a simple yet warm space. The vanity counter, designed like an adapted paulownia chest of drawers, embodies a Japanese aesthetic. The beautiful combination of the black artificial marble countertop and the wood tones creates a refined elegance that brings the entire space together. At the back of the washroom is a spacious bathroom complete with a bathtub. Its black tiles create a tranquil and calming atmosphere, evoking a sense of Japanese tranquility. And here is the toilet. Here, too, a design combining wood and black tiles creates a serene atmosphere. Finally, let’s take a look at the wardrobe next to the entrance. Opening the door, accented with a light, perforated board, reveals storage for loungewear and a security box . A mirrored door leads to a clothes rack, where bathrobes are also provided. Next to it is a luggage rack, and a uniquely shaped coat hanger is attached to the wall. So, we’ll wrap up the room tour here for now. Since we’re here, we’ll relax in our room listening to some records . Next, let’s explore the building. Our first stop was the fitness gym on the same floor. Facing the courtyard, the space is filled with natural light, creating a bright and comfortable atmosphere. There’s also a wide variety of training equipment, including treadmills and dumbbells. It looks like you can enjoy a pleasant workout while looking out at the greenery in the courtyard. The pale boule flooring adds a refreshing touch. Next, let’s take a look at Mr. Maurice’s Italian, an Italian restaurant on the third floor with a rooftop bar. This iconic dining spot at Ace Hotel Kyoto is popular with both guests and locals. The first thing you’ll notice upon entering is the tiled floor and partition design. Artist Alexander Girard’s simple yet bold graphics create a striking effect. The partitions are sliding, reminiscent of a modern reinterpretation of a sliding door. The bar counter is also fitted out, with tiles running from the lower-back wall to the wall behind the counter, creating a striking, unified design. Further inside, you’ll find a space surrounded by walls in muted wood tones that harmonize with the floor pattern. Lovely wooden furniture adds a soft, warm touch. Stepping outside, you’ll find the rooftop bar, offering a panoramic view of the ShinPuhkan courtyard. The sofa space, taking advantage of the stepped tiers, is perfect for relaxing. One of the unique charms of this bar is the different atmospheres you can experience depending on the time of day: enjoying the bright light and greenery during the day, and gazing at the illuminated courtyard at night . Next, let’s take a stroll outside the hotel and into ShinPuhKan. Direct access to the courtyard is available from the lobby entrance on the first floor. The courtyard, brimming with greenery, was designed by landscape design firm Place Media. Furthermore, artwork by sculptor Kohei Nawa is placed here, creating a soothing space where nature and art blend in harmony. Proceeding further into the courtyard, we find a commercial area lined with various shops. The expansive wooden-beamed space is flanked on both sides by glass-walled stores, bustling with people, from restaurants to retailers. Before we knew it, it was time for dinner, so we headed back to the hotel to enjoy it. Tonight’s dinner will be at PIOPIKO, a bar and taco lounge located on the mezzanine and second floors. Enjoy Southern California Mexican cuisine, including tacos and tostadas, created by a popular LA chef . Upon entering through the second-floor entrance, the first thing you see is the bar counter. The ceiling is clad in copper plates, creating a unique look that intricately reflects the scenery. The ceiling’s wooden framework and steel pipes continue from the first-floor lobby, creating a sense of unity throughout the building. Further down the stairs beside it is the mezzanine seating area, which is apparently used not only for seating but also as an event space. The copper-clad DJ booth exudes the Ace Hotel Kyoto’s commitment to music and culture. You can choose from a set menu or à la carte. For drinks, I ordered a mojito, a vacation staple for architects, and PIOPIKO’s signature cocktail, the PIOPIKO Margarita. Enjoying a drink in this unique space is truly exceptional. The vibrant aroma of spices, typical of Mexican cuisine, combined with the unique design made for a truly satisfying dinner experience. I’ll take a stroll around Kyoto at night before retiring. Breakfast will be served at KOSA, the hotel’s restaurant on the third floor. Based on the concept of “Farm to Table,” the restaurant offers dishes made with an abundance of seasonal vegetables, meat, fish, and grains sourced directly from producers. The restaurant’s name, “KOSA,” comes from the name of a plant, and expresses the restaurant’s desire to be a place where people can mingle and create excitement and interaction . Enjoy a relaxing time in the spacious, seven-meter-high rooftop garden, a stunning third-floor space. A unique worldview that weaves together Ace Hotel’s American culture and Kyoto’s traditional crafts, offering a special dining experience you can only find here. Diners can choose from six options, including egg dishes like omelets, avocado toast, and Japanese cuisine. I was thoroughly satisfied with the refreshing breakfast and the comfortable space. Thank you for the meal. After dinner, I took a short stroll around the rooftop garden. The lush green space, surprising even the third-floor space, allowed for a relaxing post-dinner moment. So, what did you think of Ace Hotel Kyoto? This hotel, themed “East Meets West,” offers a pleasant interplay between traditional Japanese materials and crafts and contemporary design. The playful design, meticulously crafted down to the smallest detail, transforms your stay into a creative experience. Not only do diverse people gather here, but the lobby and restaurant also foster cultural exchange. I truly believe I was able to experience Ace Hotel’s unique style in Kyoto. If you have the opportunity, I highly recommend visiting. And as a bonus, I’ll also be showing you the Kyocera Museum of Art, where beautiful architecture and art come together. This historic building, originally built in 1933, was renovated in 2020 under the design of architects Jun Aoki and Tetsuo Nishizawa. It offers a comfortable blend of past and present, truly a fascinating place where the old and the new intersect. Be sure to stop by.
