We’re off the beaten path and visiting Koh Raet, a tiny, secret island village just a ferry ride away from Koh Samui. This peaceful village is home to descendants of Thai Chinese, many of whom trace their roots back to Hainan and have lived here for over two centuries. We took the ferry from Koh Samui to the mainland and headed straight to Koh Raet to escape the crowds and enjoy island life at its most relaxed. We walked the whole island, had an unforgettable seafood feast right by the water and woke up the next morning to go dolphin watching!

btw, at 24:00, that dish isn’t moo nâo (หมูเน่า, rotten pork) 😅 but actually moo nǎao (หมูหนาว, cold pork). It’s called that because when you keep it for the next day, the broth and pork belly collagen solidify into a kind of chilled jelly. It’s probably because of the southern local accent, where the tones are pronounced differently from the Bangkok accent.
