コリウール、マティスが愛した南フランスの港町。フランス人が好きな街2024年 / 可愛い猫 / 花が美しすぎる旧市街 / おいしすぎる料理 / Collioure, South of France
Hello everyone! This is Sayaka from quatre saisons. In June, my husband Matthieu and I went to Collioure, a town in France near the Spanish border. We stayed at this hotel for two nights. (Hôtel Princes de Catalogne.) The room was more spacious than I had expected, and since it was a hot day, I was happy to find that the air conditioner was already on. It’s quite big room! There is also a desk! There is a bathtub! There is also a place to hang clothes. It’s more spacious than I expected and very nice. The view from the window isn’t of the sea, but I like this room so it’s totally fine. We’ll be staying in this room for two nights. When we went out for dinner, we immediately spotted a delicious-looking ice cream shop! The ice cream looked very tasty. We talked about how nice it would be to go there during our stay and headed to the restaurant. The hotel has a very beautiful exterior! Collioure was part of Spanish Catalonia until the 1659 Treaty of the Pyrenees, so it still has a strong Spanish feel, and you can still see the Catalan flag here and there. We arrived at the restaurant. We can also eat mussels here. We didn’t make a reservation, but they were able to seat us! Our drinks arrived! Cheers! Matthieu ordered Estrella, a beer from Barcelona. It had a strong barley flavour and was quite bitter, but I liked it. What should we order? The walls of this restaurant are decorated with thousands of artworks, and it is famous as a place where famous artists such as Picasso gathered. This time, we ordered four tapas, which we will share between the two of us. Inside a large tomato are pieces of burrata cheese and tomato, topped with a genovese sauce. It’s so good ! You have to be careful not to get the tomato sauce on your clothes, Matthieu! Next, we’ll try the anchovy dish called ‘Collioure.’ This red thing is paprika. It’s good! A pigeon is eyeing our meal. Next, we’ll try the croquettes. They’re made with Iberian pork! They come with two types of sauce. The texture of the Iberian pork was great, and it was a bit salty but very delicious! Matthieu imagined the croquette would be so hot it would burn his tongue, but it wasn’t that bad. Fried squid. We eat it with mayonnaise. I forgot what sauce we used to eat it with when I was in Japan… It’s good ! Matthieu, who is from Alsace, didn’t used to like seafood much, but he said he had the opportunity to eat fried squid with his family when he was a child. Matthieu ordered his coffee as well. The interior is decorated with many paintings like this. This space, which is like an art museum, is so beautiful that I want to visit every day. It’s still bright, so we want to take a walk and eat ice cream somewhere. We visited this castle the next day, so I will introduce it later. There is a windmill where the arrow points. Is this boat returning and preparing to disembark? This is a really wonderful place. Le petit cafe is really small and cute! This building is currently a church bell tower, but it used to be a lighthouse. We were able to take a walk at this time because we stayed in this town. It was a really happy time. Our hotel is close by, so it’s great to be able to take a leisurely stroll without worrying about the time. There were lots of birds in the trees. I was a little worried that they might poop on us… The other side is also beautiful. We can go up here, so we decided to go there later. This church is under construction, so we couldn’t go inside. What a pity. The next day, we decided to visit the chapel we could see in the distance. The music being played nearby adds to the atmosphere. I couldn’t resist so we decided to go halfway there. I was happy to hear the church bells ringing from here. We went to buy some ice cream. Is there any ice cream made with local specialties? Matthieu chose crema catalana (a kind of crème brûlée) and amarena cherry. I chose pear sorbet. After eating ice cream, we walked back to the hotel while strolling around the old town a bit. This street is also lovely. The hotel is in this direction. It was getting dark, so we decided to go back to the hotel and visit again the next day during the brighter daytime. It’s such a pleasure to stay in this beautiful town. It’s still hot. Yeah, of course. The lights look nice at night. Perhaps because it’s a residential area, it’s less crowded than I expected. This street is like a maze. There are many signs for galleries and studios, so I guess many artists live here. It’s a little cool outside at night, but it looks hot inside the houses. This is a school. It’s in a nice location! Before visiting Collioure, we also went to Castelnou and walked a lot, so I will sleep well this night. (Please also check out the video from our visit to Castelnou.) I’m glad it didn’t rain. I discovered a really nice restaurant. I’d like to go there if I can the next day… It was very lucky that the hotel was so close to the city centre. Even at this time, the parking lot is so crowded. We returned safely to the hotel and had a comfortable night’s rest. It’s the morning of the second day, but it’s already close to noon. We were so tired from the previous day that we couldn’t get up at all. I came to a café near the hotel for a light meal. It’s bread topped with egg, onion, and cheddar cheese. It’s delicious. The other one has avocado, smoked salmon, and egg. We shared these two. Both were very tasty. I recommend this place for breakfast or brunch! Hello, there ! On the second day, we’re heading to the castle. It’s cool in the shade. There are a lot of seagulls. The seagulls are very large and aggressive, so the pigeons look cute. The seagulls were targeting the lunch box that lady was eating. That’s too scary. That’s why I’m afraid to eat sandwiches outside. It will become a war over sandwiches. It seems less crowded than I expected. This is the Château Royal in Collioure. This ticket office also sells souvenirs related to the castle and Collioure. The admission fee is 9 euros per person. Perhaps because we visited the castle around noon, it was quite empty. You could see the sea from various parts of the castle. This cool room looked like an old-fashioned washroom. We entered the castle through the gate. It looked like preparations were being made for an event in the square. We are now going to see the exhibition being held in this 17th-century chapel. Movie posters were displayed. I thought it would be a lot of work to clean such a large castle. From here, you can see the mountains on one side and the sea on the other—what a luxury to be able to enjoy both! There were French explanations about the castle and the history of Collioure. The view is stunning, and the sea is crystal clear. That dog a swimming. The structure visible in the distance is Fort Saint Elme, originally built in the 9th century to defend against Moorish attacks. In 1172, it became a watchtower, and at the end of the 13th century, it was rebuilt to strengthen surveillance of enemies. In the 15th century, Emperor Charles V had the tower surrounded by walls, transforming it into a fortress. This notice is written in French and Catalan, as you can see from the illustration. Indeed, this place is dangerous if you don’t walk carefully. The castle was built in the 13th century and was used as the summer palace of the King of Majorca from 1276 to 1344. In 1642, France and Spain went to war, and in 1659, the Treaty of the Pyrenees made Collioure part of France. After Spain withdrew in the 17th century, Vauban, a military officer and architect who served Louis XIV, carried out major renovations, including raising the outer walls. In 1922, it was designated a historic building and underwent further renovations. In 1939, the fortress was converted into a prison. It was used as a prison, and the first inmates were Spanish Republican exiles. There was a small beautiful garden. The hydrangeas were in full bloom. We’ll go through this underground passage to the exit. It’s narrow, so be careful not to hit your head. They must have fought here during the war. Did they use this window to spot enemies and launch attacks? This underground passage is very cool. They probably stored food here in the past. They must have hidden here or attacked through small gaps. You can go further down. It might extend all the way to the sea! Pigeons have made nests here. We went to the brasserie to take a break. First, let’s toast with some cold sparkling water! Matthieu chose cassis and a Spanish nougat ice cream called turrón. I chose lemon and raspberry ice cream (it was so hot that I can’t remember what I ordered). Next, we’re heading to the Museum of Modern Art. From here, we can go to the windmill I introduced on the first day. And we arrived at the museum. We can enjoy coffee and other drinks in this garden. There were books about various painters here. There was also a shop right inside the entrance. It has been 120 years since Henri Matisse first stayed in Collioure, and the museum invited contemporary artists to create works that commemorate Matisse and interpret his legacy. There were paintings inspired by Matisse’s works on display. It started to get cloudy. I happened to find a lovely street, so I decided to check it out. No one else was walking down this beautiful street, so it felt like we had it all to ourselves—a truly luxurious moment. There was a cat taking a break. There was a another cat. Did this cat get stuck and can’t get down? This cat is apparently named Capucine. I wasn’t expecting to see cats in Collioure, so I was delighted! This area is beautiful too. This area looks like a village. Let’s go right. Where does this road lead to? Maybe to the sea? The birds by the window are fake crows to keep pigeons away. I want one too. This street is very nice. Let’s go explore. We returned to the brasserie where we had just eaten ice cream. We’re heading to the chapel we couldn’t visit the day before. The Saint-Vincent Chapel was built in 1701 on a bedrock of slate at the tip of the Collioure inlet. Unfortunately, we couldn’t enter the chapel, but we enjoyed the view from here. Walking along the pier behind the Saint-Vincent Chapel, you’ll arrive at the green lighthouse, completed in 1886. There were many keys attached to the side of the lighthouse. The view of the town of Collioure from here was also beautiful. We decided to return to the street we had visited the previous night. This area is called Le Mouré, and the colourful buildings are very impressive. This is apparently leftover paint from Catalan fishing boats used in the fishing industry, which has been reused on the exterior walls of houses. This area is also hilly, so there were many uphill slopes. We decided to go to the street we didn’t visit the previous day. There is a photo of the painter André Derain here. André Derain, along with Matisse, created over 100 works in the summer of 1905, giving birth to Fauvism. It’s easy to see why Collioure is such an inspiring place for artists. As you stroll around the Mouré district, you’ll find many reproductions of paintings created by the two artists that summer. These places are known as the ‘Fauvism Trail.’ It’s very beautiful. We went for dinner at a restaurant we found on our way back from the previous day’s walk. This ham was a bit spicy, like chorizo, and very delicious! We also ordered a gratin-style dish with scallops and mussels, with the surface slightly charred. Matthieu finished his first sangria in no time and ordered a beer. The beer he ordered was Mil.Lenari. The font is very stylish! Delicious! It’s a summery beer. A lemon-flavoured blonde beer. A very fruity citrus beer! It’s easy to drink, so I have to be careful not to get drunk. This is anchovies and paprika baked on baguette. I’ll have some too. It’s delicious. Spanish red paprika is used a lot in cooking, so it’s produced in large quantities and is inexpensive! You can also buy Spanish paprika at a good price in France. (which is really nice🙏) We also ordered some tortillas. The red stuff on top is probably tomato sauce? It’s delicious. Tortillas are made with eggs and potatoes, aren’t they? The stuff on top might be cheese. For dessert, we ordered crema catalana. It’s very similar to crème brûlée. Crema catalana contains cinnamon and lemon and is made with milk, while crème brûlée contains vanilla and is made with cream. This was also very delicious! I want to eat it again. This restaurant doesn’t take reservations, so if you’re interested, I recommend going early! The day before, we had talked about going to an ice cream shop, so we went there. There were so many flavours of ice cream that it was hard to decide. Matthieu ordered black vanilla ice cream and cinnamon ice cream. I chose mandarin orange. There was a concert in front of the castle in the evening, so we decided to listen for a little while. It was a wonderful concert, but we were quite tired from walking around all day, so we listened for a little while and then returned to the hotel. It’s the final morning in Collioure. I was tired and couldn’t get up early, so I ended up waking up late. This is our breakfast. We ate a lot the night before, so we couldn’t eat as much as we thought we would. Morning. We are going to Spain, but before that, we are lucky that the market is open, so we would like to stop by. It feels a little different from Provence, where I live. I found a shop selling Pokémon goods! They had my favorite Psyduck tote bag! This is nice. I want to put it at Matthieu’s parents’ house. There are many events in Collioure in the summer, so the city hall and tourist information centre staff must be very busy preparing for them. They were selling skincare products made with donkey milk, which I’ve seen quite a bit in the south of France. The market is pretty big! This area had a lot of clothes and accessories. The food was in another area, so I’ll check that out later! There were a lot of elementary school students. It’s still before summer break at the end of June, so maybe they were on a field trip from nearby schools. I’ve been going up and down a lot of hills and stairs over the past few days, so my legs and knees are a bit sore. I will burn the image of the seaside of Collioure, which I truly loved, into my memory. Next, we came to the market where a lot of food is sold. They were selling wine from this region called Banyuls. There are cherries. The apricots looked very delicious. The cherries were from Spain. The market was quite large and surprising! The children’s pouches were very cute! I really liked these cherries and debated whether to buy them. I debated whether to buy honey but ended up not buying it. I should have bought it. Fougasse is famous in Provence where I live, but it’s also found in Catalonia. There was a sweet called Bunyete. It is eaten around Easter. The plate with a cat on it was very cute! The ham looked very delicious. I looked to see where the melons sold around here were from, but it only said France. This looks like the plate used for Crema Catalana, which I had for dinner the previous day. I couldn’t forget the pouch from earlier, so I came back. I thought I’d like to use it when I go shopping by car. This shop had other nice items, and I wish I had more time to look around! I was so happy I bought it! I was very satisfied. It was fun going to this market! Matthieu, who loves cheese, was curious about what kinds of cheese were sold. Next to the cheese shop was a bakery. When I see bread I’ve never seen before, I want to try them! They also sell a snack called ‘Bunyete’ here, which I saw at other places too. I knew about these kinds of cars from TV, but this was my first time seeing one in person! They can make spare keys and replace watch batteries too! The fish shop must have a hard time carrying all the ice on hot days. They also sell paella here. There are chairs, so you can sit down and eat there too! That’s all for this trip to Collioure! It was lucky that the market was close to the hotel, so we could go there on short notice. We’re heading to Spain next! The video will be posted on sayalog soon. Thank you for watching the video all the way through. See you in the next video!
