At that time, it is said that he buried somewhere within the temple grounds the numerous treasures he had brought as souvenirs for Yoritomo, including gold. They’ve moved, so those kinds of stories are a bit dubious. It is said that this shrine was once the main guardian shrine of Tsuruma County. It must have been quite large in its day. 暮らしと非日常の境界をなぞるように、鶴間という地名の由来を辿って歩きはじめた。上鶴間は相模原市、下鶴間は大和市。その間に横たわる地形と行政のずれが、かつてひとつだった村の名残を静かに浮かび上がらせる。目指したのは、公所と書いて「ぐぞ」と読む地に移された浅間神社。鎌倉時代、源義経がこの地を訪れ、空を飛ぶ鶴を見たという伝承が残る場所だ。頼朝との別離のなか、境内に財宝を埋めたという逸話も語り継がれている。今はこぢんまりとした社に過ぎないが、かつては鶴間郡の総鎮守として地域を守っていた。社を後にし、段丘を下って境川のそばへ。猫の姿を追いながら進むと、水管橋がその先に現れた。明治に敷設された日本初の近代水道の記憶が、無骨な鋼鉄の構造に宿る。祈りと水道、伝説と都市機能。並び立つことのないはずの記憶が、歩く道の上でそっと交わっていた。
