Paria River Ranch – Rescues, Camping & Horse Trails (Harvest Hosts)
are we ret-ta-go? we are are are we all ret-ta-go back there? Yep. okay! Ugh! who’s back there? oh your friend mhm it’s Thursday evening and after a full workday we’re headed back on the road again tonight we’re heading straight to St george Utah 2 hours later we pull into a Cracker Barrel
parking lot to settle in for the night the next morning we grab breakfast to go thank you put in another full workday and then drive two more hours leading us to one of the most memorable Harvest Host stays we’ve ever experienced nestled between Kanab Utah and Paige Arizona along the quiet curves of Route 89 is
a place unlike any we’ve seen where you can meet rescued animals camp with
or without hookups bring your own horses to ride breathtaking worldclass trails or stay
in one of their Airstreams or rustic cabins this is Paria River Ranch when we arrived last night uh the batteries were
fully charged so we’re not sure how soon they became 100% charged but at least when we got here
they were 100% charged so again we started at 60% we drove exactly 2 hours and uh they were charged
to 100% in that 2 hours time so that’s pretty good it makes it so nice that we can just go anywhere
we want and uh and not have to worry about being you know hooking up something we need to point out
is you don’t have to be a part of Harvest Host to stay here now we are affiliates with Harvest
Host but still need to tell you the truth so sorry Harvest Host but you know at their defense
Harvest Host makes it easy for you to find these places because there’s I mean they’ve already did
the leg work and found a lot of these places so that’s kind of what really makes the membership
worthwhile cuz a lot of places you don’t really need to be a member to stay but we wouldn’t have
never found this place without it right we would not probably not because you know when you stop a
second because when you’re on Harvest Host website you look at these places and it gives you a lot
of information and you have a lot of reviews uh from other people but they have a lot of camping
sites here all right here’s their little store he blends in with the wood he cute mhm wow that’s
really cute too did you see that yeah right there look at that i don’t even know what he call it but
my uh handyman he’s like raises snakes he knows what they’re all called yeah this guy’s cool yeah
he’s uh that’s one of the ones you don’t see all the time really i forget what they’re called um
and then there’s these other ones that are spotted and then there’s the other ones that my cats just
slaughter and are everywhere that are little ones so these were part of uh 32 um baby Mustangs that
were rescued from uh the callulling program uh they they call a lot of the horses um you know
I don’t want to get into the politics of it but um Hey stop buddy but anyway they were they were
set to be called they’d been separated from their mothers and fathers rounded up and then uh buddy
stop and then we got two of them because a bunch of they were distributed to different rescues
throughout the West and I think even the East Coast so Leo was like skin and bones when we got
them like I can’t even believe he survived steph was going to take two girls but when she saw
Leo and the hauler showed up she was like he’s not going to make it so we took Leo and he’s great
and this is Luna and they’re both like so sweet so they were basically separated from their mothers
and now they live here and uh they’re super happy and Leo’s fattened up and Lun Luna she’s the
darling of the r i mean she’s really pretty too you can see she’s a real looker and uh she’s just
an angel they both are um he’s going to be ged uh probably next month so he’s still intact but
he’s he’s already trying with her so we we got to nip that in the bud um but yeah these these are
part of So we also have a 501c3 that we started up so these guys are really part of they’re they’re
kind of the first couple horses that are part of that um 501c3 um so we’re going to you know
rescue some more of the mustangs and work with the Navajo and try to get them not to you know
euthanize them and instead you know distribute because they’re beautiful horses and they can be
trained and then there’s a lot of groups that are training them there’s actually a group of uh uh
they were from England and New Zealand and they just I don’t know how they found us they showed
up they had all these baby mustangs that they had trained and they had a 3-month program and they
were just taking them all over the West and then they were going to give them to people after
training them so there’s other alternatives to kind of euthanizing them and separating them and
selling them you know there’s all sorts of stuff i’m I’m not familiar with exactly how all of it
works but we just try to get the ones that are you know close to us that are in need and then we’ll
house them here and if we they become this could become their forever home or we’ll find a new
home for them where where someone wants them for you know their kid or to train them cuz they’re
they’re just horses they’re just wild they grew up differently than you know a horse that was bred
in captivity and they tend to be really healthy they’re kind of like the muts you know they’re
like they’re just like solid horses this is Goose and Meadow so Meadow is the spotted one and she’s
missing an eye so I can’t remember how Steph found these two but I guess it was a sheep guy i don’t
think he breeds them for meat but she’s got one eye and he didn’t want her breeding with you know
it was kind of like a genetic um aberration so she he didn’t want her breeding with the rest of his
herd so he was going to put her down and I guess Steph got in touch with them was like “We’ll take
her.” And he’s like “We’ll take this guy too.” So she’s got a mate so now they’re this is their
little they’re separate from our other goats just cuz they’re they’re still pretty young oh but they
actually the other goats come up and hang out with them cuz the other goats just wander around we
should have brought Billy to introduce him he just ran around the the fence for like 20 minutes yeah
and I just put him back in waiting for something oh wow yeah really go to town on that this is the
love bubble and that uh we rent that out to guests and uh it’s just a cute little Yeah 20footer it’s
a It’s really nice it’s the 2007 it’s the 50th anniversary edition so it’s got some It’s got
the retro uh back if you’re into Airstream and they do well out here in the desert they tend
to hold you know anything that’s like that old uh keystone there so we have like ranch hands
that we’ll do like a 3-month contract with or they’ll come and donate their time the rescue in
in you know trade to stay and you know whatever um but these things tend to get kind of fried in the
desert so the Airstreams cuz they’re uh stainless steel and aluminum they just hold up i mean this
thing’s been out here for four years and it really hasn’t faded at all cabin over there and then the
store the Paneolo Palace which is like a Hawaiian cowboy theme cuz Steph’s mom grew up on Aahu so
the Paneolos are the Hawaiian cowboys okay and um I mean it’s got some surfboards and it’s kind of
rustic it’s not there’s no like hoola dancers or anything it’s very western and then the cowgirl
cabin we’re remodeling over there and then we’ve got the bunk house which we’ll walk by okay and
then we got the hookups and hey the western party room which we’re gonna be remarking hey we’ve
got like the Nautilus which is this sea shell shaped kind of like rock formation so a lot of
people ride over there then there’s Moon Canyon toad stools there’s all sorts of wild you know
red rock and this is our like little place that we’re still working on we have so many cats that
have showed up on the ranch a lot of them feral so my buddy and I were like “Oh we could put a hot
tub here and have a real outdoor.” But Steph’s like “No let’s make it a catio.” So we put cedar
trees in there and basically built all this you know like stuff for them to crawl on so I don’t
even know how many cats are here cuz the feral cats keep trying to break in cuz they want to be
they want to live here and not have to worry but here’s one of them tunnel where they can go in
for air conditioning they got AC in the summer and heat in the winter they can go in there in
the winter you enjoying some air conditioning in there chilling how cool is that have a little
tunnel there where they can go in this little room and get some air conditioning do they keep
the mice down i would think we don’t have any mice i mean we’ll we’ll step will rescue some if
they capture them because they’ll torture them for hours but they kill the lizards they love to
eat the lizards and just slaughter them you know they’re ninjas they’re cats that’s kind of the
border so it’s basically a big rectangle we have 26 acres so it goes all along where that fence
line is all the way to the end where the Long Valley Road is and then you can see where the kind
of the old restaurant is right there in the road that’s the edge of our property what’s that big
circle thing like an old pool so we’re going to turn it into a fire pit and like a kind of like a
pow-wow okay uh uh area but it is a fountain oh so when the well was working we’re we’re repairing
the well right now that was a running fountain oh okay and um there was also a zip line the guy
had went from here to there but I think someone got hurt um liability and this was before our
time because I think it was I don’t know how he had it but I think he had it up on the but up on
that little messa i don’t know how he did it the owner who did that this place was like back in I
think it was the ‘9s he built the little western town his father had like inherited or uh made a
bunch of money on the stock market and he gave each kid a bunch of money and I think Eastston
came out here and just lived out here and kind of had his dream to have a ranch but supposedly
this place was pretty crazy he used to be full of uh I guess he had some deal with all the with
European tourists so bus loads of tourists would show up and they had like the naked bad mitten
court we heard and like whenever we go into Paige they like oh you guys bought the ranch and they
start telling us stories like we’re like all right oh yeah I remember being there you know and there
was a party in that western party room and there were some Hell’s Angels and I mean I’m just like
what wonder if anybody ever hit the wrong birdie then the ranch kind of passed over to a couple
different people and it’s always been a horse ranch And do you guys do horse tours yourselves
no we don’t because it’s just a whole another ball game and to be honest I don’t have the patience
and the time to do it and we’d have to Oh yeah it’s like you become like you become like a
amusement park and everybody wants a picture and put their kid in i I don’t want the liability
to be honest i don’t I don’t blame you and I you know Steph did she trail guided for years so
all right so you’ll meet the resident pig oh my gosh so every everybody’s got a story burke was
raised for 4 up the road one of our uh neighbors um raised him as a piglet to be you know auctioned
as a meat pig for 4 and uh she called us uh two days before the auction in Flagstaff and said
“We love Burke we don’t want Burke to die will your rescue save him?” So Steph raised 2500
bucks went to the auction had to bid with the I guess he got up she wound up going for 2500
so she got bid uh got Burke back and now Burke lives here awesome and he’s like a dog he knows
how to sit and Oh my god he’s a real sweetheart look at this little cow can you sit can you sit
maybe for a treat you got to have a treat first you want a horse treat so Burke will eat
anything right now it’s horse treats sit sit burke sit sit that’s sort of sitting
burke sit sit sit i don’t want to sit oh he was almost ready i don’t have a treat
though i sw Oh my gosh sit you’re almost st that’s it that was close enough he’s a real
sweetheart some of our uh volunteers like Marian who comes and works with him he’ll get in there i
don’t get in there with him anymore because I’ve known him since he was a piglet and he kind of
thinks he’s still a piglet and he if he steps on your foot it’s it’s not good but Marion will go
in there with him and she’s got him on his back and he loves belly rubs i mean pigs are smart
he does like pirouetses whenever the ATV comes because he knows he’s getting food you know he
loves pizza and spaghetti he loves macaroni and cheese i mean he’s he’s just a sweetheart and now
he’s part of the rescue he’ll he’ll you know this is his like forever home and he said they they
can’t slaughter them after if they wait oh the machines they have I guess they they skin them
and their skin’s so thick that after their you know 6 months 7 months after that they this they
can’t the machine can’t can’t skin them i mean he is hardy and you know he’s basically what happens
too is their tusks start to come out you know he’s like a he’s like a wild pig now but he’s a tame
pig you know he’s he’s he’s never bit anybody and um you know because we hand raised him from a
little baby and I’ve known him you know when he was a little baby I would go in there and just
rub them and you know and that’s why they fell in love with them because every other pig at at
the um Flagstaff um what at the auction wound up becoming bacon except for it’s almost like a dog
whining yeah and he got his teeth stuck in the hogwire the other day and we had to cut them
out he was crying so we had to get down here with these clippers and he had gotten them
stuck here and he didn’t he kept pulling you know and he didn’t know to go like forward and
then unhook them and he was crying and Steph’s freaking out so I went up there and I got these
big old cutters and you know still he was stuck for like 5 minutes going crazy so and then he did
it again so I’m hoping he’s figured out cuz this hogwire is supposed to be thick so that they don’t
get their teeth stuck on it but now his teeth are so big but I think he’s smart he hasn’t done it
cuz I think he’s so used to coming through here to get treats you know sit oh you keep wanting
to sit sit sit but dad I don’t want to fit in yeah we were feeding him cucumbers the other day
one of the guests brought like 20 cucumbers and he was just like feeding and he they were gone
and like Yeah Burks you know he’s a real popular member of the rescue um see why yeah he’s Are
you saying Burke burke yeah he’s a Bergkshire pig that’s what Burke from Burkshire he’s a Bergkshire
pig the killpen is essentially an it’s it’s it’s two things when a horse winds up um at its end
it’s old maybe it was on an Amish farm or maybe someone died and the horse was had no one to take
care of it they wind up at auction and there’s a couple auctions uh down in Louisiana Texas area
and a lot of the horses especially the larger ones they go to the meat trade and you can’t slaughter
horses in the US but you can take them across the border to Canada Mexico so basically what happens
is they buy the horses for meat take them across the border they wind up being dog food or
this that and the other anyway Masel was in that situation she was a really pretty uh quarter
horse we saw her online and you basically then we hired a hauler to go pick her up her along with a
couple others and we didn’t know she was pregnant so that’s her baby and uh that’s Starbucks so we
came down we we kind of knew we kind of looked at our vets said I think she might be pregnant and
literally two weeks later we came down and she was here and she was this big and so she’s got a
little deformity though you can see her back see how it kind of has a ridge in it there she’s got
a short skin she’s got a short back so basically what that is is she’s missing like a vertebrae
so it doesn’t seem to be bothering her but she you know there’s a lot you can look it up there’s
short back horses and she’s basically just kind of compact and she has this little ridge so can’t
put a normal saddle on her but it doesn’t seem to affect her she’s in great shape she’s super
athletic super happy um she’s just you know a little different probably a kid could ride her or
you could ride her bare back with a special saddle but because of the way her back is like you can
see how short she is um but you know she’s with her mom and she’s never been separated from her
mom hannah was given to us by Best Friends because we lost one of our drafts and she’s a Clydesdale
and I forget she was donated to Best Friends and they kind of gave her to us what’s the um cover
on for that’s a fly mask oh okay yep so it keeps the flies off you said you had a giraffe we don’t
have a giraffe oh I thought you said when we lost our giraffe giraff oh draft yeah draft horse um
he was a Belgian belgian draft yep he was Spven he was part of the hall that rescued from the
We took We had Spven Rio who you’ll meet he’s probably you know the most traumatized oh really
you know but he’s come a long way hi hi she’s like a teenager though so keep an eye on her ears
like you can always tell where a horse is coming from by their ears when their ears go back it’s
usually like “Hey I don’t know who you are.” Or “You’re going near my food.” Or “What’s the deal?”
Or see like right there she’s But you’ll see it’ll be more pronounced it’s like if another horse
like if her mom comes over Starbucks will her ears will go back towards her mom and go get out
of here cuz she wants the attention and she’s you know obviously been raised here since she was a
little baby and she everybody’s oo and awe over her so she’s a little She has the same back thing
yes so she has this is her back that’s her short back that little ridge there and if you look at
like her mom’s back it’s longer and flat that’s the baby that’s her mama and she was the one born
with the deformity yeah so if you push up in here there’s no way they can bite you okay so you can
push it into her mouth yep see good girl and our horses really sweet feeder like I’ve met some
horses that can you know you can feel the the teeth but they have been trained so well to take
treats that they’re going to give you like 3 in of lip right i think Steph got a call about through
her contacts there’s a mini horse they don’t want her anymore um can you come meet her and take her
and so Minnie’s I think Minnie’s only nine 10 and then so we took Minnie and then Harry was there
and he’s a pony you’ll see him he’s over here he’s a gypsy pony oh yeah this is Harry this is He’s
beautiful so Harry they were going to put him down cuz he’s old he I guess he used to do pony rides
with kids and stuff and he was 27 when we got him he’s almost 30 now he’s 29 this one in here yeah
so that’s Harry so they were going to put him down so Steph took them both she showed up with Minnie
and Harry and they’re buds and he’s just a old you know gypsy pony but Minnie’s got quite the
personality she’s should have called him cousin it yeah he’s pretty funny and that’s River he’s a
gypsy vanner which is kind of a it’s a draft mixed with I forget the other horse but it’s kind of a
mini draft and they’ve got the feathers on their legs which is the long hair and you’ll see he’s
got a mustache too he’s got a little He’s got a little mustache and a beard that’s Yeah they’re
very elegant never seen him yeah gypsy banner and I there Steph loves them for equin therapy because
of their um temperament they’re really mellow super um easy to work with because she does ecquin
therapy basically working with people who have um you know PTSD autism uh different you know
stuff where she’ll work with the horse to kind of you know help them he’s her personal horse
what’s his name again uh he’s Forest he’s got his fly mask on he’s been having some issues with
the gnats and so his he rubbed his tail off too he’s usually much more elegant but he’s a big
baby and he’s kind of see I just put my hand in his mouth there he won’t even bite but Forest is
he’s just a treat monkey like he’s so spoiled but he’s kind of the he’s kind of the silent leader
you know everybody love all the other horses love Forest and um he’s just a big baby i think he’s
almost 20 19 so he could live another I mean we had a our neighbor’s mule was almost 40 when she
went which is kind of amazing no idea what causes the gross growth on his leg there um that’s just
like a almost like a what do you call Hey babe we call the gross on their leg the little Oh chestnut
so like really really long long time ago they were um Oh they’re going that way they were um toes
like basically it was like a thumb so like I’m talking like ancient ancient like a like a dclaw
on a dog really i I made a cookie for you cookie i’m staffed by the way he was a stud for years and
then he was geled gosh couple years ago when was King Gilded three years ago two years ago so he’s
he’s quite a prize and he uh world grand champion back in his day yeah he’s world grand champion
Gypsy Vanner and he was imported when he was a baby and then used for breeding and he was just
passed around for a bre for a breeding that’s not a bad job though i mean Yeah and then oh he’s
got quite the mustache going he does he has a good look he’s older river’s a baby he’s How old’s King
15 16 um King is going to be 18 no I think King I think his birthday’s Oh my god i think he just
had his birthday i think it’s the 24th or the 23rd 21st and Starbucks about to be You can see
his mustache you need like mustache wax on that i know so and River has like a curly mustache
which is really funny are we going to name him Mustachio wasn’t that thrown around for a while
i don’t know but yeah he’s got this and then he’s he’s kind of dirty right now but he cleans up real
nice yeah so they call these feathers on his legs i mean he looks like he should be in like you know
an Arthuran well you know kind of Robin Hood if he didn’t rub all of his mane off and everything
and he’s much more uh majestic when he’s still majestic he’s still majestic we love you buddy but
he’s a big They’re I mean he’s These guys are all So he was imported so he’s considered a gypsy cobb
because that’s from Yeah so that’s from uh England and then if they’re born here like River he’s a
gypsy Vanner which they started the Gypsy Vanner breed in 1996 the year I graduated high school
um so he technically even though they’re the same breed like from the same they actually have a a
similar parent down like a grandpa or something um you do you have a cookie in there smells of liver
treats oh yeah don’t eat those liver treats for uh Buddy for Buddy but um yeah so Gypsy Club and
Gypsy Banner however I usually just say they’re both gyps i just say gypsies when we bought the
ranch the owner had sold the trail business and Gretchen is actually she’s got papers she’s got a
really good lineage and everything but she’s older now and she has some arthritis she lost an eye one
of our um ranch hands horses bit her on the eye so she still has the eye but it’s you know she can’t
see out of it and then um it was crazy she cut the other eye we don’t know how and then Steph like
somehow saved her eyes she had to do all these treatments she had like a plastic thing going
into her eye and she had to like inject her it was crazy but she has partial vision so she can’t
see out of that one eye and thank God because she would have been blind we were still going to keep
her but then her and her and Rio so Rio is one of our other rescues he is a paint we we rescued
him you know along with the rest of them back uh about four years ago when we first started the
ranch up but he’s probably got the most trauma we don’t know his story um but you know he’s come
a long way and sometimes if they weren’t feeding right now he’d come over he’s just you you know
he’s hard to put a lead rope on and yeah he’s had something happen to him this one was rough with
him he’s the paint the black and white one okay and then the other one’s uh Gretchen but he’s
really pretty horse i mean he’s gorgeous but we have some people working with him and we’ve
never ridden him you know he’s just he’s just very skittish and he’s kind of better with women
so we think some someone was rough with them and you know you just don’t know what happened before
they got here what an amazing couple huh oh they are very genuine and doing such a good job for
just helping out people and animals well they have a dump station here and um so we’re going
to utilize that it comes with your uh with your fee so they ask for like just a donation of
course with Harvest Host they always recommend $30 donation any place you go with Harvest Host
um but they have like 12 electric sites they’re going to do five more camping sites uh down here
and then the rest are all boondocking areas i’m not sure how many boondocking but this just
scattered all over and then freshwater also so but if you’re going to be close to this
area coming through please make a stop here don’t forget to subscribe to our channel

Such a wonderful video! Thank you!❤
That's awesome with what they're doing. So many times all you hear is the cruelty of animals. Nice to see people who care.
Now you're in my neck of the woods, for horses I mean. I've had horses for most of my life and rescued many of them. The outside of a horse is golden for the inside of a human. Horses teach people so many things, to love and be kind, to name a couple. I'm lost without horses.
Great video!
Hey there ???? If you find yourself in Brenda, Arizona ( the western terminus)or any spot along the way on US Route 60, Kindly snap a highway marker photo. We live on that roadway in Midlothian, Va near Richmond
Thanx !
I
Love your channel ! A lot is going on . We lost our husband but we get thru the funeral mtg on Monday . I’m going to be fine
Good to spend a day just horseing around once in a while. Stay safe🥸😎🤓
Such a heartwarming video!
I am not a horse person but have the utmost respect for anyone that finds the goodness in rescuing animals and protecting them. Glad you highlighted these great people
What an amazing journey you’ve taken us on! ! ❤❤❤
