【ミートパッキング】 タイタニック号が目指した場所、最悪のホテル、消えゆく文化を巡る ニューヨーク旅行ガイド! ファッションディストリクトとか興味ないし、チェルシーマーケットも紛らわしいんだよ(笑)

Behind me is Chelsea Market, located in Meatpacking. Back in the day, Meatpacking was always mentioned
as a questionable spot in Manhattan. Now, even though it’s become a fashionable neighborhood,
there are still some questionable spots. Today, I’ll be introducing some spots
you probably haven’t heard of, as well as some newer spots. My final destination is a hotel I’d like you to stay at
if you’re brave enough. Let’s get started! Today’s starting point is Chelsea Market!
That’s it! It’s confusing, but it’s not in Chelsea.
Chelsea Market is in Meatpacking! This is 11th Avenue and West 15th. I’ll be walking south from this intersection.
As soon as I start walking, I see this noisy place in Manhattan, right?
Can you see it? Is it a little hard to see?
Little Island is on the right. Do you know it? This building was designed by
the famous architect Heatherwick, and his work includes Bethel at Hudson Yards
and Azabudai Hills in Japan. He’s such a popular architect that
there are people who tour just his work, but for fans of the mysterious Meatpacking,
this probably won’t interest you at all. This building is actually quite famous, but I won’t explain it here today. I’ll explain more about it in the High Line episode.
A very close friend of mine was stationed in New York around 2000,
and he often talks about the past.
He always reminisces about the Meatpacking, or rather, or rather, the mysterious overpass (the High Line).
I actually filmed this area once at the end of last year, based on a conversation with a senior colleague, but a strong wind made it difficult to hear my voice,
so I deleted the footage.
Today, I’m filming again. The place that he remembers most is the hotel
under the Meatpacking overpass (on the other side of the High Line)!
I wonder if it’s still there? The hotel doesn’t show up in Google searches, but I walked there and found it
myself at the end of last year. This is it! My senior colleague said it was the Liberty Hotel,
but I didn’t look it up. But when I got here and saw the website, I checked and it’s the Liberty Inn! This is Manhattan’s only love hotel. It’s basically a hotel that you rent by the hour. I’m in the middle of introducing you to the Liberty Inn, but there’s another thing essential to today’s story,
right here. It’s right there. By the way, this is where I’ll be introducing you
to Genesis House later. If you walk in this direction,
you’ll find yourself at Little Island. Little Island is the work of Thomas Heatherwick,
who is currently the most popular artist. However, if you’re interested in old-fashioned meatpacking, I don’t think you’ll be interested in Thomas Heatherwick this time,
so instead of Little Island, I’d like to introduce this rusty gate, which is another place I need to introduce.
It’s quite hard to see. Can you see it? It says Cunard here. Cunard! Is the other one white? You can see the faint words “Cunard White Star Line”
written on it, and this place, this pier, is actually where the Titanic was scheduled to arrive.
Cunard is a British shipping company,
and it still exists under the umbrella of Carnival. The Queen Elizabeth is owned by Cunard, and it’s the luxury liner Queen Elizabeth. At the time,
there were two shipping companies in the UK,
Cunard and White Star, and it was White Star that owned the Titanic.
White Star was later absorbed by Cunard, but the pier where the Titanic was scheduled to arrive
on its maiden voyage from England to New York was where Little Island is now. However, as you all know,
it struck an iceberg and sank. After that, the survivors and sailors were taken in, which is our final destination for today, so I’d like to introduce this part first
and then return to our original route. I checked the website and found
that you can stay for up to 10 hours, or you can stay overnight. This hotel was featured on Instagram on April 15th as Historic US!
An old photo was also posted on the site. It’s a hotel known only to those in the know. Looking around, you’ll see Rivian,
a car showroom rumored to be the next Tesla. Right across the street is Genesis!
Genesis is Hyundai’s luxury car brand. On the other side, if you take another look, you’ll see Little Island,
the place we just walked through. Surrounded by these cutting-edge spots,
the Liberty Inn is still in business. This was 25 years ago, so my senior colleague told me
that companies weren’t very lenient in many ways back then.
For example, he met a woman at a bar and decided to stay at this hotel.
He said he experienced a major culture shock from hearing every sound from the next room.
He could hear voices, of course, but also the sounds of someone hitting
the wall or two people wrestling. He said he has fond memories of
those kinds of places. Basically, when he thinks back to New York, he’s filled with memories of bad places and scary times. And here’s Genesis House.
Can I get in? I turn off my camera and head in. Now, I’m allowed inside and I’m allowed to
take photos of the exhibition in the basement. I’ll take photos of all the cars first
before heading out to see the show. Hyundai is really investing a lot of money
into Genesis. Including its subsidiary Kia,
I believe they’ve produced around 7 to 7.5 million units. My dream didn’t come true,
but I really wanted to work for an automobile company. Genesis used to be just a Hyundai model, but now it’s a brand.
It looks like this! Now, let’s go down to the basement. Luckily, we’re able to enter this interactive exhibit in the basement with almost no wait.
Talking is strictly prohibited, but photography is allowed. Since we’re here, let’s go inside. It costs a lot of money. These kinds of exhibits are on the rise these days. Now, after looking around,
I’m heading out. People are arriving one after another. When this exhibit first opened, everyone said
they had to wait more than 20 minutes. I was lucky today! There’s also this new spot. Frankly, it doesn’t look like the old Meatpacking.
This is it ! This building!
Oh, this noise is great! This is the standard!
The Standard Hotel! If you continue south, you might see it. Directly ahead is the Whitney Museum of American Art.
The Whitney Museum is probably the best in Manhattan for modern art,
with artists like Andy Warhol. It’s also famous for Jackson Pollock,
but it’s probably the Meatpacking Museum.
Fans of the old Meatpacking won’t be interested, and I don’t think
this area had that kind of culture. Meatpacking… This is it, it says Gansevoort street , and it’s in a small area! Do you see this slightly dirty brick building? This is the only one! There are still butchers, only five in total, and apparently there used to be over 250. Now, This is really the only Meatpacking spot that still exists. It says London Meat, right? And on the other side, too! My eyesight’s so poor I can’t read it, but it says Beef! And across the street is the long-standing Brass Monkey! I think it’s a typical Meatpacking bar. Each floor has a slightly different layout, and it even has a rooftop. The High Line is right here, so you could walk there and go to a trendy place, but why not stop by Brass Monkey? It’d be nice in the evening. I’ll keep walking. Right now, I’m walking east with my back to 11Av. There are still some dingy places like this . Looking up above the dingy places, I see The Standard Hotel. The contrast is interesting, isn’t it? This cafe right below the High Line! It says Diner. This is Hector, an American diner that miraculously survives to this day. I like the dingy feel, don’t I? This place is open from 5am on some days. I recommend having bacon, eggs, and pancakes here. Aren’t you tired of all the trendy restaurants? I also like the more laid back atmosphere, without the flashy, modern stores. I highly recommend this place! This is the intersection of W12th and Washington Street. I’m walking south on Washington Street. Here, I’ll find a clothing store called Vince, and next is the French store Zadik & Volder. This area is now called the Fashion District, but it doesn’t feel like Meatpacking, does it? Shake Shack is on this side. There are surprisingly stylish stores, and some high-end stores, too. For example, this isn’t high-end, but this is Warby Parker. This is a showroom-style eyewear store where you can try on items and then purchase online. Here, the High Line ends. This is the southern starting point of the High Line. The name of this street is Gansevoord! If you take a look around this intersection,
you’ll see Saint Laurent here!
Saint Laurent has nothing to do with Meatpacking, and it’s hard to see across the street,
but maybe Zegna? But you don’t need such high-end items, right? This is Golden Goose! This is also very high-end, isn’t it?
There are stores like this lined up, and I’ll keep walking. For example, this is Christian Louboutin! This shop is Louboutin, a famous heel brand.
It’s known for the red leather soles on the back. It’s a shop completely unrelated to Meatpacking.
And this, I think, is Herno? There are a lot of fashionable people!
No, I’m sure this town wasn’t like this. The clientele is great, but it’s Maman! I recommend
this place because the restrooms are clean. Maman is popular,
so you have to line in. I’ll continue walking south. Why not stop by this area before starting
your walk along the High Line? I’ve barely stopped taking photos, so you can see that it’s a very small area.
As I’m showing you around today, you can see that it’s different from
the impression of Meatpacking back then. It has an atmosphere
where fashionable people gather. I’m sure the people who were stationed
there nearly 30 years ago would be surprised. It’s probably because the weather is nice today, but it’s become a really nice place.
This is the intersection of Washington Street and Jane.
Turn right here. Huh? Is there construction going on ? Could the hotel be gone? It’s right there. It’s a little noisy,
so I’ll turn off the camera for a moment. There are no trucks around now.
The construction is happening across from Jane. There’s construction happening across from the Jane Hotel. This hotel might not be the most popular in Manhattan, but it seems to
have a pretty bad reputation on Google. You can book a room on Booking.com,
but if you check the reviews, you’ll see a lot of negative things about it,
like it’s dirty and cramped. This hotel is actually under construction, and the reception is
in a different location from the original reception. There’s an arrow here, right?
You enter through here now. They were bringing in something.
The original reception was here. Now, let’s take a photo from the front. Now we’re at the front. This is the whole picture!
I’ll use a wide-angle camera to capture the whole picture.
Looking at the exterior, it looks like a ship’s bridge, and it was apparently built with
that ship in mind, so don’t you get that vibe? What makes this hotel special? First of all,
the rooms are incredibly small. They were modeled after ship cabins, with one room containing a bunk bed
and the other a small single bed. Apparently, the Seamen’s Friends Society commissioned the famous architect who was involved in the founding of Ellis Island to design this building.
I think it was completed around 1900, so it’s very old.
And there’s another famous story behind it: this hotel temporarily housed
the Titanic’s survivors when it sank. It’s a place with such a rich history. There are plenty of stylish and expensive hotels
around the world, not just in New York. But if you’re just planning on staying in New York and only needing to sleep…
I’d encourage anyone with the courage to try one. For example, if I said I’d stayed at a nice hotel like
the Four Seasons, I don’t think many people would be interested in that.
The same goes for the Ritz. But what would most people think if I said
I’d stayed at the Jane? I think you’ll probably ask, I asked the receptionist last time, and they said
that there are only shared bathrooms at the moment, so I’d like you to be prepared for that. I think they’ll be renovating it in a few years,
but I think it’s a good idea to experience this history now. I’m hoping to make a detailed
New York guide on my channel, so if you find it interesting,
please subscribe. Thank you for watching.
