We’re in the worst possible scenario. It’s almost like the worst nightmare since we started thinking about the trip to Europe. We’re spending the night in the Rome airport, and it’s that moment when you keep going because movement creates opportunities, but in reality, you feel like curling up in a ball and hiding in a bed somewhere. At any moment, we’ll be kicked out of Europe. Three weeks earlier, we had flown from Buenos Aires to Spain with a dream: We would start almost from scratch on a new continent so we could continue exploring the world. The first step was to find out what it’s like to navigate a motorhome in Europe and what kind of infrastructure they have for this lifestyle. This research would be key to choosing our next home on wheels, which we’ll buy here in Europe. After that, we would visit some friends and, finally, fly to Italy to apply for citizenship as descendants of Italian emigrants. Just three days before the flight from Seville to Rome, our plan was ruined because an emergency decree issued by the Italian government denied us our blood rights. “The decree-law concretely changes the situation.” We hesitated about how to proceed, but with the ticket already purchased, we decided to travel to Italy anyway to see if we could work something out in person. Although I won’t lie to you, we had little hope. From the moment we began planning this stage, we were very clear that the trip through Europe required different arrangements. So, we flew from Buenos Aires to Spain with a plan, a step-by-step guide on how we were going to proceed. And a few days ago, what happened was they completely changed the rules and issued a sort of decree. It was all over the news worldwide, affecting millions and millions of people of Italian descent. That decree establishes that from now on, the only people of Italian descent who can apply for citizenship are the children or grandchildren of Italians born in Italy, which is not the case in either of our cases. So, we were completely stranded, not knowing what to do. We’re obviously investigating other alternatives. We had already planned the flight, the trip, and the arrangements we had made for the next 15 days in Italy . And although there were many doubts about whether to continue or stay in Spain and miss the flight or continue with this plan, we decided to continue so we could also explore another country, investigate what there is to do here in Italy, and see if we can find a solution. At the same time, while we’re on this trip, we’re going to be investigatingāwe’re already exploringāa ton of possibilities we have to achieve our ultimate goal, which is to have our next home. After five modes of transportation and a terrible night’s sleep at the Rome airport, we managed to get to the rental car as soon as the branch opened at 9 a.m. ” Wait, don’t start. No, no, I didn’t start. I’m here. Pass me the cable. Let’s plug in the phones. Lancia Ypsilon . For the next few days, we won’t be moving around on foot. We rented a vehicle, the cheapest we found, which turned out to be a Lancia Ypsilon, which currently has 9,500 km. Yes, we’re almost new. No, no, no. 27,900 km. Ah, I was reading something, eh, 30,000 km. Well, my phone? We don’t know where we’re going. The first step is to go get the “codice fiscale” in Italy, which was the step we had before the idea of āāprocessing citizenship here in Italy fell through. So we processed the codice fiscale, which is like a tax code, a kind of CUIL would be the most similar in Argentina, so we could have it, to be able to carry out any type of necessary transactions. With that, you can open accounts, buy vehicles. So, it doesn’t hurt to have it. Although the citizenship thing is quite complicated. While it’s not yet something definitive that can’t be done, it’s most likely that it can’t be done. That it can’t be done. Well, let’s open this and the address… For months, we imagined that arriving in Italy would be an extremely happy moment. And despite the fact that we were already here, the joy of knowing the land of our ancestors for the first time was tainted by the bitter taste of anguish. Well, we arrived safely and on time. Guillo has been there waiting for a few minutes to see if they’d help him. It’s difficult because we’re managing in another language. We’ve been here for, I don’t know, months using Duolingo, I mean, mostly practicing English, not so much Italian, but Guillo is really digging his heels in with his Italian. I ask him a ton of questions because he knows more than me, and yet, well, here they speak to you quickly, and also, you’re talking about technical things because you’re asking about a specific procedure. It’s like we’re complete foreigners and can’t speak the language. So that puts another barrier in the way of what we’re doing, right? It’s great. We’re a little sad that it didn’t work out. But anyway, the question is going to be finding a way around it, right? For the “Codice Fiscale” you need a “Permiso de Soggiorno.” And for the “Permiso de Soggiorno” you need a rental agreement. But you can’t certify the rental contract until you have a “codice fiscale.” And I’m not fluent enough in Italian to question the gentleman. Yeah, I know, I know. So, no, huh? And he said no, he sent me away. Are we going to buy something before we… before we pass out in the vault? We haven’t been eating for two days. (laughs) Because we’ve been drinking almost nothing for two days. I mean, we digest it with something in our stomach. Up. Tangerine, tangerine. We did a simple shopping trip because we don’t have a refrigerator, we don’t have cutlery. In fact, we bought a yogurt and we have no way to eat it. We don’t even have a spoon, I don’t even eat with my hand. It gets very challenging these days of traveling, but one thing we did notice is that prices, at least here since we’re close to Rome, we’re on the outskirts of Rome, are cheaper than what we’d been seeing in Spain. A little touch, things have gotten a little cheaper. And look how nice. We were tired and hadn’t slept well, but we kept going and headed for the coast to find a little spot where we could rest for a while. I’m starting to panic a little because I can see we’re going to be spending the planned 14 days here in the car, because what we didn’t plan were the hotels and all that. The original plan was to tour small towns with very few inhabitants to find the place where we were going to settle while we processed our citizenship. But what happened? Today they wouldn’t even let us do the “codice fiscale” because you need something else, and then it practically makes no sense for us to go through the communes. Welcome to our Motor Home. You can see it at a glance. Right here. It’s the shortest vantour in history. We’re doing it cheap, aren’t we? We’re planning to get to know a little bit of Italy, to explore, we’re looking at the map where that’s going to be. I mean, we don’t know. I was really sleepy. So, with so much sleep, I couldn’t think. And we took a two-and-a-half-hour nap. Hey, that’s all the sleep we got, right? Wait. We didn’t sleep at all last night. We decided something: We’re going to hit the water because we’re 71 km south of Rome’s Fiu… Fiu… Fi… airport. Rome. And then we’re going to go find one of those landscapes that give us introspection, okay? To figure out what we’re going to do with our lives. Yeah, doggy. Maybe you see us smiling and going for it, but inside we were too worried to say it out loud. On this walk along the beach, we recalculated, as our grandmothers advised, took off our shoes to release the heavy energies, and the Tyrrhenian Sea offered us its tranquility. It wasn’t time to give up yet, and on this little piece of Italian coast, we were able to talk and decide on our next steps. That’s how we gained a bit of clarity in these chaotic days, because nature will always be our grounding wire and the last refuge to return to. [Music] The sun shines above us on this beautiful Italian morning. We’re done, we’re starting the day. Villeta Barrea. Wow. A beautiful thing. A medieval village located in the middle of the mountains. Spectacular. All the little stone things. I don’t know why they like to live so crowded, but it’s nice. Nice. Little pills. Like the historical weight that one also carries. You know how to appreciate and admire it while walking, and also the location, right? Because it had the snowy mountain in the background, and we had breakfast next to a river, but it was completely and utterly crystal-clear. So we started the morning peacefully. We promised to see deer and bears, but we didn’t see them. Well, we didn’t leave the town center either, let’s say, the village. I was walking there by the stream in the morning, and that did surprise us. This is land of bears, land of deer, and land of wolves. I had no idea, at least at that time, that in Italy, in Spain there’s also a very significant area of wolf land, that there would be wild animals. It’s kind of surprising me. We haven’t seen any yet, but we haven’t gone on an adventure either. Let’s move on because we discovered a drawback in this business of having to bring little luggage to Europe and little luggage to these days that we’re going to be in Italy. We didn’t bring much warmth, and at the same time, we decided to sleep in the coldest place in Italy, sometimes at 0 degrees at night, so we were a little cold, don’t worry, so down the coast, please. Let’s go find a little more warmth so we don’t have such a bad time, because sometimes we don’t. I mean, we’re getting a couple of comments saying we’re passing places too quickly and so on, but understand that this part, this chapter of our lives, these episodes of our journey that we also share with you are atypical. They’re going to be out of the ordinary until we have our own house. Yeah, we’re going to be like we were denied. Yes. Yeah, we’re going to be like homeless, wandering around, trying to figure out why that’s what keeps us motivated, keeps us facing adversity and looking for solutions, but it’s not the Rolling Around That We’re used to, or, well, we’re also used to you. So let’s enjoy these strange shapes. It’s part of the nomadic life we chose, and the idea of sharing it with you is to see the different ways of traveling and what happens when your plans get complicated and you have to improvise. And also, I mean, this is something you’re also grateful for in life, right? Flexibility, right? We can do this today, do that tomorrow, and when it’s time, we have to do paperwork too, and when we have to be homeless, we take advantage of it. We take advantage of it and enjoy it. We weren’t going to give up just like that, so in addition to adding many kilometers through these beautiful lands, we tried every town hall we could to see if they would accept our citizenship paperwork. Every rejection hurt, but it would have hurt much more not to have tried to change our luck. The possibilities of finding solutions here in Italy have definitely been exhausted; doors are closed for the moment, and well, it also forces us to rethink what this plan we had for 14 days of traveling around Italy was all about. The truth is, we’re not finding any solutions for the moment until the decree is analyzed, which limited the possibility of generations of Italian descendants from accessing citizenship. Until the decree is analyzed, which is a month and a half away, a long time, we have to start evaluating other alternatives. So we’ve been investigating and already have at least three possibilities to consider. It’s like, in some way, we’re discovering amazing medieval towns, we’re traveling spectacular routes, we’re seeing beautiful landscapes, and while one appreciates it, recognizes it, enjoys it, there’s something underlying all the time that doesn’t allow you to truly connect with what we’re experiencing, with exploring a new country, with being on a new continent. There are some aspects that we value in this critical situation that we are going through and it is, on the one hand, being more aware of all the previous experiences that we have had in our life, in the traveling life, which make this situation in which we find ourselves without a home, basically in a completely new continent, now in a country where we practically do not speak any of the language, we are able to maintain ourselves with quite positive energy, and not succumb to the crisis of, “Oh, what the [ __ ] am I going to do? Because the truth is there’s no other way to explain it. We decided that the initial 14 days we had planned to travel through Italy, we’re going to cut it short and we’re going to return to Spain. We’re returning to Spain because we found that the solutions there, the bureaucracy and the way of handling things, are much more flexible. We speak the language. So, we’re going to be able to communicate with the officials and in that way we can really start to draw up a plan. Once we have the advice from the immigration lawyer and we already have the flight ahead to Spain, we go back and get to work. We were very lucky because we were already running out of fuel. The thing is, we’re passing by several gas stations. Today is Sunday, so there are no gas station attendants, there are no assistants to help you fill up with fuel and here it’s all self-service. So, what happens? Uh, we wanted to fill up at a station about 20 km further up, but the card It was rejecting, I don’t know why. It’s like they have a kind of mini ATM and from there you go to charge it at the pump. It rejects the card. Hey, we put in ā¬20 and as soon as the ā¬20 came in… Bye. The machine restarted. So we lost them. We made it. After losing a lot of euros, we lost ā¬20 on a machine that wasn’t working. I managed to get someone to help me, but they charge you more because they help you. Oh, really? Yes. They charge you like 20 euro cents more per liter. Per liter? I think 25 cents more per liter, but we still traveled about 500 km. Yeah, like for 30 L. How was the Lansia? Yeah, but anyway, it hurt. What can I say? Yeah, I know. And that’s how one day these two kids who left Buenos Aires are walking through none other than Rome, the eternal city. So in the next chapter, don’t You can lose yourself in the Rolling Around gaze of this city that still captivates millions of people from all over the world today . Rome began as a lost city in Lazio and ended up as the capital of an empire that spanned three continents. We’ll walk through its ancient streets and discover together what makes the so-called capital of the world so special that it’s so beloved by so many.
