8-Day Southern Germany Tour
Days 1–2: Rüdesheim and the Rhine River Cruise 8-Day Southern Germany Tour
Days 1–2: Cologne 8-Day Southern Germany Tour
Days 1–2: Frankfurt After a 14.5-hour flight from Haneda, we arrived at Frankfurt Airport. It was already past 8 PM local time, but the summer sun still lingered in the sky. We only made a quick stop at a supermarket in the airport. Then we headed straight to a nearby hotel to rest for the next day. The next morning, we left before 7 AM after a light breakfast at the hotel. We took a one-hour bus ride to Rüdesheim, a wine town. Rüdesheim is a picturesque town along the Rhine River. It’s known for its wine, history, and stunning scenery. Especially famous for producing fine white wines. This is Drosselgasse, a charming alley bustling with tourists during the day. Before 9 AM, it’s rare to see it so empty—it feels like a hidden gem. Lined with restaurants and souvenir shops, this is the heart of sightseeing in Rüdesheim. If you love quaint European towns or enjoy wine, this town is highly recommended. The tour included a visit to a local winery afterwards, where we had the opportunity to sample rare regional wines. A friendly cat welcomed us in one of the back alleys. By the riverside, we spotted a greylag goose— a waterfowl not commonly seen in Japan. We boarded a cruise ship from the shore of Rüdesheim to experience the famous Rhine River Cruise. For two relaxing hours, we enjoyed the World Heritage Rhine Gorge scenery. Passing vineyards in the Rheingau region, medieval castles appeared one after another. Unfortunately, it was a cloudy day, but we still enjoyed a unique blend of medieval history and natural beauty. It became a memorable and valuable river journey. This castle was destroyed in 1689 during the War of the Palatinate Succession and left in ruins for some time. It was reconstructed in the 20th century, and now it’s a popular tourist attraction due to its views and historical value. These castles were mainly built around the 12th century not only for military defense, but also to collect tolls from passing river traffic. The Rhine River was one of medieval Europe’s major trade routes, with frequent movement of goods and people. Charging tolls to ships yielded enormous profits. We got off the boat at a town called St. Goar. For lunch, we dined at a restaurant with a view of the famous Lorelei rock. The main dish was fried whitebait. After lunch, we took a 2.5-hour bus ride to Cologne. We had a restroom break at a service area on the way, but using the toilet cost €1 (about ¥170). A McDonald’s burger cost €2.19 (around ¥370), a Coke €3.99 (around ¥670). The high cost of living in Europe was quite surprising. We arrived in Cologne. Cologne, located in western Germany, is the fourth largest city with a population of about 1.1 million. We headed to the main attraction: the World Heritage Cologne Cathedral. It came into view as we turned the corner. Its sheer size makes it hard to grasp its scale. This is the full exterior view of Cologne Cathedral. Compared to the surrounding buildings, its height and scale truly stand out. The cathedral’s overwhelming presence from the front. Its height reaches 157 meters. Cologne Cathedral is a Gothic-style Catholic church, formally known as the Cathedral of Saint Peter. Construction began in 1248 and was completed in 1880—632 years later. Inside the vast cathedral, you’ll find stunning stained glass windows from both the medieval and modern eras. Among them, a mosaic-style piece by Gerhard Richter stands out in particular. His work is considered a significant piece of modern art. During World War II, although the surrounding city was heavily bombed, the cathedral itself miraculously survived without collapsing. Many describe it as solemn, mysterious, and breathtaking with its play of light and shadow. Some visitors even say it feels more like a spiritual sanctuary than a tourist site. Today, it welcomes over six million visitors annually and is one of the most visited tourist destinations in all of Germany. This tour only included the Cologne Cathedral for the Cologne stop, but the cathedral’s overwhelming presence left a lasting impression. I now understand why Cologne was chosen as part of the itinerary. Now we head back to Frankfurt. We arrive at Römer Square, the historic heart of Frankfurt’s old town. In December, this square becomes the main site of the Christmas Market. Frankfurt is Germany’s fifth-largest city and a major financial hub home to institutions like the European Central Bank. We walk across the Iron Bridge that spans the Main River. The bridge is adorned with countless love locks. It also serves as the departure point for river cruises on the Main. The riverbank in the early evening on a weekday offered a wonderfully peaceful atmosphere. We head to a riverside restaurant for dinner. The main dish was sausage—a truly classic German meal. That concludes our sightseeing for Day 2. On Day 3, we’ll visit Heidelberg and Rothenburg. If you enjoyed this video, please give it a thumbs up and subscribe to the channel.
